>> good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. it's 5:00 a.m. on saturday. happy you are up and joining us starting your morning with us. we will start off with a quick check of the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the marine layer is back with us at about 1500 feet. we are starting out with gray skies. right here in emeryville looking at temperatures fairly typical, except check out napa. really sticks out at 49 degrees. six degrees cooler than it was yesterday at this time. feeling like a little bit of fall in the air newspaper the north bay. 60 in livermore. the forecast for today calls for plenty of low clouds and fog to start out. then we will look for increasing sunshine. it should be a very nice afternoon with high temperatures into the 80s in our east bay

don't agree with the president. chase got one too. >> it's definitely offensive. make all these accusations about what type of person i am, what type of person anybody who flies the flag is. >> we don't know much about the sender except the letters are postmarked oust san francisco and on each envelope what do you know, a stamp with the american flag. neighbors are just as puzzled. >> i think it's ridiculous. >> they call this a close-knit community and many put out flags to show solidarity. >> we didn't want to be intimidate bid that kind of behavior. in fact, we wanted to show a strong statement, send a statement. >> even though morris and pending done think sending the note was a bizarre thing to conk the flag stands for your freedom. they have a freedom to send that letter out. >> their flags are staying up. in san rafael, alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> the american right to protest was on display in oakland and berkeley where demonstrators

rallied over the police shooting of an unarmed fine ager in missouri. >> hands up, don't shoot. hands up, don't shoot! >> the anti-police rally began last night at 14th and broadway in oakland t started with chanting, as you heard there. that is? support of 18-year-old michael brown who witnesses say had his hands up when a officer shot him. the tone was different in berkeley at van kroft and telegraph. at least five store windows were broken along telegraph, including at a bakery and a bank. police in riot gear began moving the protesters after warning they would be arrested if they did not disperse. some were pepper sprayed by demonstrators. in ferguson, missouri, police and about 200 protesters clashed again after another tense day. several people congress grated on a busy ferguson street as protests continued. this is nearly a week after brown was shot and killed by the officers.

it remained peaceful until later. some people threw rocks and other objects at police. police used tier goose disburse the crowd, but no arrests were made. yesterday police finally released the name of the officer who killed brown. marcy gonzales has the latest. >> the revelation from police. >> the officer that was involved in the shooting of michael brown was darren wilson. >> far from enough to ease their anger over what else police shared. releasing these surveil earns images they claim show michael brown in the middle of what police call an alleged strong arm robbery, just 15 minutes before officer darren wilson shot him to death. the video showed when wilson opened four he didn't know brown and his friend were suspects. adding that wilson initially stopped them because they were walking in the middle of the street. >> i know his initial contact was not related to the robbery. >> so whatever that took place there had nothing to do with an

individual getting down on his hands and knees, raising his hands in the air, and saying don't shoot. >> we want to hear about the killing itself and how did that come about? >> and while the tension is high, the police presence remains low. the highway patrol captain now in charge of security here taking on a one-on-one approach. >> we thank you for being here to protect. >> urging people to keep these protests peaceful. >> police tell us officer wilson and his family have been relocated for their own safety. ferguson, missouri. >> a sonoma county deputy who shot and killed a 13-year-old boy in santa rosa will return to patrol duties next week. he said he thought andy's pellet gun was a real ak-47. since the shooting there have been many protests. another one is set to begin this afternoon. the officer returned to desk

duty in december. embe assigned to patrol unincorporated areas of sonoma county. this morning the european unit said the return to the status quo in gaza is not an option and it is offering to do something about it. the e. u. is offering to take charge of border crossings in and out of gaza and to work to prevent illegal arm shipments. and residents take advantage of an extended cease-fire with israel to do some shopping. main stumbling block in making theocracy fire last beyond monday is gaza. they have been part of a longstanding block aid from israel and egypt. happening today to protest the blockade, pro palestinian demonstrators will try to shop a ship from unloading at the port of oakland. it is supposed to happen at 8:00 this morning. hundreds of people will picket, they say, to protest israel's latest attack on gaza and it's on going occupation of the area.

>> we have new details about the shooting of a german elementary school teacher on vacation in san francisco. the four men originally charged with murder plead guilty to lesser charges yesterday. they will spend five to ten years in prison. in 2010 mechthild schrer was killed in union square in a shootout. the d. a. said unreliable witnesses and a chaotic crime scene made it hard to prosecute. two other suspects could still face charges >> a bay area business executive suspected of posing as a tsa agent at sfo and groping two women will not face charges. officers believe 353-year-old eric slighten was drunk when they say he lured two women, one at a time, into a private room and groped them on july 15th. the san mateo district attorney's office announced yesterday they will in the press charges because they have not been able to speak the women. he is listed as a director and

partner of hong kong-based actus capitol singapore. four people had to be rescued by helicopterrer from a north bay cliff yesterday. this is video showing one being lifted from the rock face just south of muir beach. they hiked about a third of the way up the slope but reached a spot they couldn't go up anymore and they couldn't go back down. all four were safely rescued. sad tales continue to come in from people who never made it to the ball mccartney concert at the stick thursday because of the crowds of traffic. many watched from inside but so many others were forced to listen outside. frustrate bid a lack of answers what went wrong. some pond at oracle hope they will be compensated for the expensive tickets. >> michelle took pictures of the concert last night at candlestick. unfortunately they are all from really far away because she and her dad never made it into the stick. >> we winded up sitting in the car and we couldn't move.

we rolled down our window so we could hear the music from candlestick and basically listened to the whole concert in our car outside of the parking lot. >> they knew they would hit rush-hour traffic when they left san francisco for the concert around 6:00, but they thought they would make it on time. sadly, like so many others, she and her father never got into the parking lot. >> i feel like something should be done and we should be common stated. we paid so much money for each ticket and we didn't even get to enjoy it. >> the san francisco police chief greg suhr said he had the same number of officers out as on any 49er game day and traffic c that's little console lays to those who couldn't get in, including a woman who flu in for philadelphia just for the concert and never made it inside even though her friend lives close by. >> she only lives about 20 minutes from candlestick so we gave two hours to get there and four hours later we still aren't in the parking lot. >> traffic after the concert was just as brutal for some people.

1500 feet. it is filling into the bay and looking at the cloudy skies along the coast at oakland this morning and half moon bay. it's 57 half moon bay. 63 in san jose. you look at the numbers and you think, okay, kind of typical, upper 50s, a few low 60s. but up in the north bay numbers have dropped significantly. here's a shot at emeryville. napa 49 degrees. 59 by the delta with the winds up to 25 miles an hour. 60 livermore and 56 in santa rosa and finally the golden gate bridge. the deck of low clouds not too low. we aren't running into mist and drizzle this morning but nonetheless, we have the fog and low clouds around the bay and the coast this morning. mild to warm over the weekend. i said earlier it's very quiet out there. we are going to keep the steady pattern into next week. here's a hook at our radar and satellite imagery. we have high pressure situated off the coast and the area of low pressure as well. that's allowing for a steady sea breeze this afternoon. 10 to 20 miles an hour.

and overall it is a very quiet pattern. so if you like this weather, it should be with us for the next several days. one of the warmer locations is in livermore today with highs near 90. a couple degrees above average, but notice in the days to come, we will see a little bit of a drop-off over the second half of the weekend. then by the middle of next week into the mid-80s. really just a couple degrees here and there coming down over the next few days. but in the south bay today, nice afternoon with 82. san jose 88 and los gatos and on the peninsula you will see the low clouds and fog staying put along the shoreline. but that won't keep the numbers from riding through the upper 07as here at menlo park. look for 68 downtown. in the sunset the typical gray there. mid-60s. 64 daly city. south of the city 70 degrees. newspaper the north bay look for upper 70s from petaluma. 83 calistoga. you have to go way up toward

ukiah for the low 90s. 75 in san leandro today. as you head down toward fremont or toward castro valley look for a high of 80. ling inland, pretty warm afternoon but what you would expect. very pleasant from pleasanton, 88 degrees. 92 brent radioed. looking at more low 90s out by fairfield. the accuweather seven day forecast shows today to be 90s in the valleys, 670s by -- 60s by the bay. monday and tuesday slightly cooler. looks like we will get into the subtropical moisture by friday. maybe a cloudier skies with perhaps a shower or so lingering into next week. we will wait and see. it is a long way out. we will let you know how warm it's going in your community by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter another live doppler 7hd. so very, very quiet out there. >> we will take it. thank you, loosa. up next, what may be the most

it went through a roof after home. that and five other rocks has been under study ever since by a consortium of 50 researchers. they have concluded the rocks of probably 470 million years old. fragments from a meteor that dates back to before the moon was formed. they also think the fragments came from a rock that was 14 inches long and weighed 176 pounds when it first entered the earth's atmosphere. this weekend you can see a unique social program that helps fight homelessness through soccer. homeless teens from across the country are competing for the street soccer usa national cup in san francisco. it's a nonprofit that helps homeless people in 60 u.s. cities. street soccer's founders say affordable housing and living wages help fight homelessness, but there are other factors just as important. >> there's also other things to address beyond just putting people in homes. soft skilled deficits that people have, learning to show up on time, learning to work well

>> welcome back. 5:30. so glad you are with us. we start off this half-hour with a quick check of the weather. here's lisa. >> good morning. live doppler 7hd not picking up anything in the form of cloud cover. but we do have a marine layer, up to about 15 minute feet. the clouds are lower in parts of the south bay. some visibility problems. from the exploratorium camera numbers range from the upper 50s san francisco, 57 half moon bay, low 50s san carl lease and san jose. in emeryville we are looking at the low clouds and also the cooler numbers in the north bay with 47 in napa. the numbers continue to drop there. livermore at 60. and livermore this afternoon will be one of the warmer locations topping out around 90 degrees. so we will see the 60s at the shoreline. low 80s around the bay. and we will talk about how long this quiet weather pattern lasts

in a few minutes. katie. >> thank you, lisa. health officials are preparing for the worst outbreak of the west nile virus on record. in santa clara county five people have already tested positive for the disease and one person is still in the hospital. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson reports. >> a tiny insect carrying a potent disease. santa clara county health officials say three men and two women all over the age of 50 tested positive for the west nile virus. one person remains in the hospital. >> you will get things like a severe headache, you will have fever, of course, and you may have what we call -- you may not be completely with it. >> they expected a bad summer for west nile after seeing a spike in dead birds. this map shows a location of 700 bird carcasses, all infect bed by west nile. by comparison, last year they found 898. >> based on everything we are seeing this is the record-breaking year of all-time. >> from the location of the dead birds the officials know the

infected mosquitoes are concentrated in these areas. >> slightly concerning because i didn't think it was a big issue here. >> ann miller spends a lot of time outsidewalk dogs. >> five people have been infected so far this year. >> okay. >> it's not panic time, it's awareness time. >> he recommends cleaning out any standing water near your home because the new mosquito colony can hatch in as few as five days. vector control also increased the number of foggings from 11 last year to 16 this year. >> i'm glad they are on top of it. >> as health officials continue to track the disease, they are also trying to establish what caused it to spike. >> we think that it could be because of the drought. and it's concentrating the water sources for the birds and also the mosquitoes. >> he recommends using insect repellant and covering up if you go outside at dusk or dawn.

in mountain view, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> the marin humane society has released new video to track down people who continue to drop off dozens of cats in the middle of the night. so here's the surveillance video from early monday morning in novato. the people in the white s.u.v. left behind 24 cats. a humane society spokesperson said it's the fourth time in the last 18 months this has happened. in all, more than 100 cats have been dropped off. it's not illegal, but a humane society spokesperson said it has to stop. >> our best guess is someone does have quite a lot of cats. they are not spaying and neutering the cats. they are probably kept indoors. maybe their friends and neighbors even know this person has this many cats. clearly they are loved but part of loving them is spaying and neutering so we don't end up with 100 homeless cats that now need homes. >> the extra cats have put a

strain on the humane seat staff and budget. adoption fees of 100 to $125 have been waved for the rest of the month to help find homes. >> contra costa cot officials saved a dog trapped at a water treatment facility in richmond yesterday. he was stuck on a small ledge just a few feet from untreated sewage. they think a female pit bull may have been down there a few days. rescuers used a harness to pull her to safety and she collapsed, exhausted, as soon as she was free. the to dog is being treated for dehydration. starting today residents within the 451 area code can dial 1 and the area code before the call in preparation for next year he's new call rollout. in february, 2015 parts of san francisco and marin counties will be assigned a new 628 area code. when that happens, all local callers, even those within that area code, will have to die alan 11 digit number to make a call.

obama is talking about the increasing costs of college and what his administration is doing to help students not rack up mountains of debt. the president said he and first lady michelle obama only finished paying off their student loans ten years ago. president obama believes everyone should be able to afford higher education, adding he's doing what he can to assist students. >> we reformed the student loan systems so more money goes to students instead of big banks. extended grants and college tax credits for students and families. we took action to offer millions of students a chance to cap their student loan payments at 10% of their income. >> the president also urged colleges to do their part to keep education costs down. his administration has proposed a plan to tie federal financial aid to a college's performance. happening today, bay area schools are just about back in session. in san francisco public defender's office is helping kids hit the ground running. more than 3,000 city children will be given free backpacks

[water flushing] >> the twelve-inch main under grant street burst yesterday afternoon sending water streaming down the street two blocks west of berkeley high school. dave's house was one of about 40 that lost water pressure. he waited for them to fix the break and grabbed a bucket and started watering his plants. >> we are trying to be responsible east bay mud

a little different around here. 58 in concord, 60 in livermore. from the golden gate bridge the deck of low clouds a little taller so we aren't running into the visibility issues here. we will look for the coastal and bay side fog to stay with us through 9:00, 10:00 and clearing by 11:00. then a mild to warm weekend with temperatures just about average, maybe a couple degrees above average today and very little change as we go into what is getting to be the latter half of august. so a steady sea breeze with 10 to 20 miles an hour as high pressure sits offshore. looking at some high surf in southern california. so some rip current action going on there with sunny conditions. but the quiet pattern overall for california with an area of low pressure that will bring up some subtropical moisture by the end of the upcoming work week. but between now and then it should be pretty nice with upper 60s monterey, upper 80s los angeles, 97 in yosemite. so despite our excessive drought, we are enjoying a
