girls allegedly kidnapped from their family farm stand. police tracking down the suspects, a man and his girlfriend, and abc's gio benitez has been on this story from the jump and has an exclusive interview with the people who helped rescue the girls. gio, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, good morning to you. we are at the county jail q)e those alleged kidnappers are being held right now. that drama unfolding overnight. >> got anything to say? >> reporter: overnight a dramatic end to a kidnapping ordeal. investigators zeroing in on a house confiscating cars, and police now say 39-year-old stephen howells ii, a nurse, and his girlfriend, 25-year-old nicole vaisey, abducted those two little amish girls selling vegetables wednesday night. girls there. things that they saw, things that they remember wq)e very influential and getting us to this point so quickly. >> reporter: authorities rushing the pair into a late night arraignment. each charged with two counts of kidnapping. >> any comment? >> reporter: wednesday night

police say 7-year-old delila and her 12-year-old sister fannie were working their family's vegetable stand near oswegatchie. police say a vehicle pulled up and took the girls, then a shocker, more than 24 hours later, authorities say the alleged captors set the girls free 30 miles away from home on rain. starving, the children knocked on the first door they could find. jeff and pam simpson opened up that door. >> they were really scared. >> i knew instantly it had to be the ones that were missing. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with abc news, they say they helped care for the girls feeding them. >> they ate that watermelon in 30 seconds. >> he says immediately they all jumped into the car and went straight home. >> the girls just ran right in the house straight to their parents and then their father came out and shook our hands. >> reporter: this morning charging documents allege howells and vaisey planned to inflict physical injury. your team was able to interview the children and the defendants.
7:08 am
>> the defendants gave us a voluntary interview. the children were interviewed and between the two, we were able to come up with this set of charges. >> reporter: this morning, relief in this small town. and back out here at the county jail, those alleged kidnappers are being held without bond. they have not yet entered any plea. if convicted, they could face 25 years to life in prison, paula. >> wow, gio benitez in upstate new york. thank you very much. now to what could be a devastating blow to notre dame's upcoming football season and some past ones. four of the team's key players including one big star have been suspended while the school looks into charges that they cheated in class. ron is here with the story and, ron, this coming on -- their season kicks off in just two weeks. >> it really does, paula.
7:09 am
as any sports fan can tell you they are a perennial football powerhouse named as the top team in the country and four committing serious academic violations allegedly which could sideline them perhaps permanently. when the fighting irish practiced this week, there was no indication that the school whose name is practically synonymous with big-time college football was about to be rocked. four of its best players under investigation for suspected academic cheating. >> integrity is at the heart of our mission as a university. academic dishonesty strikes at that heart. >> reporter: yahoo! sports first reported that the four players would be benched pending the investigation by the school. on friday notre dame said it uncovered what it called evidence that the players had someone else do their schoolwork for them. >> if this turns out to be just a group of players on their own trying to get by in a class or two to stay eligible as opposed to some sort of systemic cheating, then it's much more of an institutional issue than an ncaa issue. >> reporter: suspensions would
7:10 am
not just affect the four players but the entire football program, which just two years ago went undefeated in the regular season and to the national championship game. notre dame now says it will voluntarily forfeit all of the games it won with the four players on the field if ultimately they are found to have cheated. >> academics will come first for notre dame, and they won't be afraid, i don't believe, to bite the bullet and take a significant hit on this. >> reporter: although the college's internal investigation is continuing, no one has been suspended yet. >> obviously notre dame fans would love to have this resolved by the first game, august 30th against rice. i don't think that's very likely. >> and the irony here is that notre dame has a stellar reputation for academic achievement, academic achievement by its football team boasting one of the highest graduation rates of any college in the country. that threatened by potentially the biggest cheating involving notre dame athletes in its very storied history. we'll see how this plays out in coming days and weeks. >> yeah, so much pride in their
7:11 am
academic program. >> really. >> they seem intense on maintaining it. ron, thank you. now to the once and potentially future presidential candidate embroiled in what could be the fight of his life this morning. rick perry, the powerful governor of texas, has just been indicted overnight. will this case mar his legacy and spoil a potential run for the white house in 2016? abc's jeff zeleny is on the story in washington this morning. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. governor rick perry has made recent headlines with his tough talk on immigration, but it's the hardball politics of texas now at the center of a felony case against him. rick perry's second act was well under way. another white house bid believed to be just around the corner. but this morning he's charged with two felony counts in texas. >> the grand jury today returned a two-count indictment against james richard "rick" perry. >> reporter: count one, abuse of power. count two, coercing a public official. the charges stem from his decision to veto funding for the state's public integrity unit which investigates public corruption.
7:12 am
a district attorney in the unit was arrested for drunken driving and belligerent conduct. he wanted her out, but she refused to step down, but prosecutors say his conduct amounted to intimidation. >> i took into account the fact that we're talking about a governor, but when it gets down to it, the law is the law. >> reporter: overnight his attorney called the charges outrageous and appalling saying "this clearly represents political abuse of the court system, and there's no legal basis in this decision." it may be a difficult legal case to prove, lawyers tell abc news, but the indictment presents fresh political trouble. his rehabilitation tour was going strong. it's been nearly three years since this. >> commerce and, let's see -- i can't -- the third one i can't, sorry. oops. >> when we caught up with him in iowa, he was looking ahead with optimism. how tough is it, do you think, to make a second impression on these republican voters? >> oh, i think second chances
7:13 am
are what america has always been about much. >> reporter: but now perry may be asking for a third chance. he was scheduled to visit new hampshire next week but now faces arraignment at the county courthouse in austin just blocks from the governor's mansion. democrats are calling for him to resign. republicans, though, say it's a partisan witch hunt. dan and paula. >> extraordinary turn of events. jeffrey, thank you. and for all the top stories, we head back to ron. >> hey, paula and dan. we're going to begin overseas where there is breaking news this morning. u.s. warplanes carrying out air strikes in northern iraq near a strategic dam controlled by the islamic militant faction known as isis. the concern has been that isis would open the floodgates of the mosul dam, which could, could send a wall of water rushing as far south as baghdad, more than 200 miles away. and back here in this country, a raging fire in north hollywood in california. flames bursting through the roof of this restaurant supply building. this was friday night. 118 firefighters battling the massive blaze. one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. the cause of that fire is under

he shot his wife. he is expected back in court on september the 17th. and a moving tribute for the king of rock 'n' roll. we all know who that is. here's a hint, it happened in graceland. hundreds of elvis presley fans took part in a candlelight vigil friday night to mark the 37th anniversary of the icon's death. the vigil took place in the garden there at graceland, his longtime memphis home. the home now a museum that attracts 500,000 fans a year. and finally a dan harris alert or sara haines too. a clever kitten, could have used it it in "pop news." i got to it first. he can open doors. his maim is mulder. he is a 7-month-old kitten and he keeps popping up after the owners would close him in the room and caught the little guy in -- >> is that like mulder from "the x files"? >> a very clever cat. >> do your cats have power? >> my cats are incapable of doing anything but cleaning and eating. they do a lot of sleeping.
7:16 am
i'm really happy they do not have that power. thank you, ron. >> maybe they do. >> maybe they do, exactly. that would explain a lot. moving on now to the girl with the golden arm and the steely eyes making mincemeat of the boys at the little league world series. >> you said the boys. well, i'm quite sure that neither ron nor dan could handle this. and sara has more on her debut in williamsport. good morning. >> good morning, paula. two words actually sum this little girl up. girl power. here's a girl that's just not holding her own among the boy, but dominating the field. >> everyone including those on the hill on their feet. it's over. complete game for mo'ne davis. >> reporter: 13-year-old ace mo'ne davis is officially the first girl to pitch a shutout in the 68-year history of the little league world series. >> 3-2 fastball. money gone. >> reporter: but despite her recent triumphs on the field, the girl with the furious fastball says she had a case of the nerves before towing the

rubber in williamsport. >> at first i was scared and nervous because there were so many people. >> reporter: on the mound davis found her sweet spot early. her first pitch, a 68-mile-per-hour fastball right down the pike, and the strikes keep coming. >> and she picks up her first strikeout of the game. >> reporter: and coming. her 70-mile-per-hour fastball seemingly impossible to hit. davis striking out eight players in friday afternoon's victory over nashville, 4-0, and she says her strategy for success is simple. >> i just go out and just throw strikes. >> reporter: it's not surprising mo'ne blew up on social media drawing the attention of even some professional athletes like major leaguer mike trout of the angels. he tweeted, mo'ne davis is straight dominating, fun to watch" and nba star kevin

durant, who is her favorite star tweeting, "this youngster is striking everybody out and she's a girl. i love it." >> i love her strategy. i just go out and throw strikes. >> it's simple enough. >> throwing very hard for a teenager. >> yes. i don't think she realizes she's any different because she's just always been the best player on the field. doesn't matter if she's a girl or boy. >> good for her. >> i know that feeling. >> you do? ron feels that way every morning on the set. by the way, the next big game in the little league world series lynnwood, washington, versus rapid city, south dakota, will be hered right here on abc at 2:00 eastern. "gma" had an absolute blast, meeting the ice bucket challenge. as ginger predicted, there was a sudden ice storm in central park when we got hit with a blast of freezing cold water. well, most of us, but who is m.i.a.? i think dan harris, right? well, i'm still shivering at the thought of all that ice cold water, but the cause behind it is enough to warm anybody's heart, even this guy's. >> yeah. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: the icy dare is simple. douse yourself with a bucket of ice water or pay up to the als

association or both. thanks to a special role, it's spreading like wildfire. now once you accept the challenge, you have to nominate three more people to take the plunge. our big boss, disney ceo bob iger, accepted tim cook's nomination happily sporting a mickey mouse t-shirt for his drenching. >> not only will i have ice water poured over my head, sounds like a lot of fun, i'm also going to donate to the association, and i'm going to pass the challenge along to three, olivia pope, peter quill and tony stark. here we go. ah. >> surely the "scandal" star and marvel superheroes won't be refusing that challenge. a dare that started with a texas deejay went to keith urban then tim mcgraw who challenged aldo perry who challenged even the almighty oprah.
7:20 am
aaagh! >> oh, yeah. >> yesterday it was "gma's" turn when we got the challenge from -- >> i challenge my "gma" team. >> reporter: -- our michael strahan. >> aaagh! >> along with the "gma" team, i got my fair share of the deluge. >> you notice i protected the mike. >> yes, yes. >> so what was your excuse, and, by the way, i'm nominating you. >> well, i did have to anchor a late night show by the name of "nightline." >> whatever, whatever. >> sorry to interrupt. i'm actually hearing that we're getting a little piece of videotape in. can we roll that? do we have that? >> i had the feeling that ron paula and sara would be making fun of me for not taking the ice bucket challenge, so here goes. >> dan. >> dan, we love you! >> oh. >> one word for you guys, one word for you guys, boo-ya. >> wow.
7:21 am
>> i did it twice. we weren't rolling the first time. >> oh, my word. >> oh, my god. >> thank you. thank you. >> dan, i'm so proud of you. so let's turn it over to meteorologist bill kelly from our abc station wsyx in columbus, ohio. are you next?. >> well, yeah. i've been challenged like four or five times. i haven't done it yet but i have jumped into a lake when it was 10 below zero for make-a-wish. so i earned the cold badge. we're starting out into the northeast where temperatures this morning into the 40s and 50s. maybe a light sweatshirt if you're going out for that morning tee time. should be a beautiful day, though. check out this live shot out of wpvi in philadelphia. lots of sunshine. headed down the shore today. make sure you bring the sunscreen and sunglasses. you know where probably sunny weather is desired is down in florida where yesterday in sarasota you guys had an half inch of rain. it was really heavy in spots, but, man, you have had seven days in a row of rainfall. 11 this month.

how he managed to escape and how it changed his life forever. that's coming up. but first the speedy verdict in the so-called love triangle murder trial. jurors deciding the fate of pedro bravo, the young man accused of killing his own friend over a girl. >> well, apparently bravo's decision to take the witness stand, it did not help his cause, and abc's matt gutman has the story. >> guilty of first degree murder, felony murder first degree. guilty of false impressment, guilty of poisoning as charged -- >> reporter: and on and on it went. for the jury, there was not much to deliberate taking less than four hours to find pedro bravo guilty of all seven counts he was charged with including the premeditated murder of his friend, christian aguilar in september 2012. bravo unrepentant to the end. >> i did not kill christian aguilar. >> reporter: the judge responding -- >> this is your day of reckoning. you took his past, everything he had been. you took his present, everything he was, and you took his future,
7:32 am
everything that he would have been. >> reporter: until the court stripped him of his life as he knew it. >> i sentence you to natural life in prison with no possibility of parole. >> reporter: aguilar's family stoic throughout. breaking down streaming out of the courtroom and falling into each other's arms. >> how do you feel? >> i don't know if i have words really to describe this. >> reporter: on that soggy september night police say bravo strangled his friend aguilar in a fit of jealousy over this woman, erika friman. she had been bravo's high school sweetheart. but in college she was dating aguilar. bravo then allegedly buried his buddy in a shallow grave an hour from gainesville but refused to tell police or aguilar's family where it was. after the verdict aguilar's father spoke. now in the minutes after the trial and the verdict, are you ready to forgive? >> not yet because pedro bravo didn't show any signs of repent. >> reporter: but he added at

least now his healing can begin. for "good morning america," matt gutman, abc news, gainesville, florida. >> the case is really gruesome and very sad. let's bring in abc news legal analyst ryan smith this morning. ryan, good morning. thanks for coming in. we appreciate it. >> sure. >> were you surprised at how speedy the verdict was? >> i was not. not when you have a mountain of evidence against you like pedro bravo did. they had videotape of him picking up what prosecutors call a murder starter kick, duct tape and shovels and things like that. they had motive which they didn't even have to prove here, this relationship budding between aguilar and his ex-girlfriend, and not only that, dna evidence and blood evidence in that car. that stacked up against him and made it almost impossible for an acquittal. >> bravo took the stand in his own defense. what was the strategy behind that? >> well, he had to, and that's the surprise here. he had to take the stand because he actually gave a police interview beforehand where he explained what happened for hours. typically that's a dream for the defense because there's your story in court, and you're not getting cross-examined, but he had so many inconsistencies, so
7:34 am
many things that didn't match up that he had to get on the stand and explain himself again and offer explanations to those inconsistencies, and he did a terrible job. he laughed. he was uncomfortable, and in so many ways he made it even more confusing. and when that happens, the jury doesn't find you credible. they can't buy your story, and in that way, he stuck with what he says on the stand and in those tapes. >> ryan, we really appreciate your analysis this morning. thank you. >> sure thing. >> important case now wrapped up. a lot of other news overnight and let's get back to ron for another look at the morning headlines. >> hi again dan and paula. good morning, everyone. overnight, the shaky calm in ferguson, missouri, shattered by renewed violence and looting. protesters blocking streets, officers responding with smoke bombs. this coming hours after the identity of the police officer who fatally shot unarmed teenager michael brown was revealed. ferguson's police chief disclosed the identity of officer darren wilson, a veteran officer after a week of mounting pressure to say publicly who shot brown. and serious legal charges lodged against texas governor rick perry.

a grand jury in texas indicted perry late friday night on two felony counts, one count of abuse of power, the other count of coercion of a public servant. the charges stem from a threat by perry, a republican, to veto state funding for democrat district attorney rosemary lehmberg's office for her refusing to resign office over a dwi conviction. perry is expected in court again on tuesday. and car lovers unite in the motor city. fanatics are gathering today, saturday, for the woodward dream cruise in detroit. close to 50,000 -- ever been to that? >> i have not. >> close to 50,000 vehicles old and new models will cruise a 16-mile stretch. this is the 20th anniversary of the event. and finally, check this out. a young surfer hanging ten, at the young tender age of 6. >> what? >> 6 years old. yes. >> like not 5, not 7, but 6. >> i could barely walk. >> she's already capturing the attention of the surfing world. >> oh. >> what a cutie. >> nicknamed the flying squirrel.
