this is abc7 news. good morning, everyone, i'm katie marzulo. it is 8:00 a.m. on saturday. so glad you're with us. we'll start off with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. hope you've been enjoying the sunny, mild afternoons, because more of that is on the way today. first, though, low clouds and fog, even partly cloudy skies out towards concord and livermore this morning. it's sunny by the delta. we're looking at temperatures from the upper 50s, santa rosa, cool spot, napa, 55 with low 60s and the sun beginning to come out with the east bay valleys. we'll look for a comfortable day inland with the warmest numbers near 90 around livermore and fairfield. closer to the bay, low 70s in

oakland. to some 80s out towards castro valley. but san francisco, upper 60s, low to mid 60s coastside and cooling to talk about for the second half of the weekend. katie? >> we begin with developing news out of san francisco -- where police are asking the public to help them identify the driver of a car that hit and killed a 2-year-old girl. offersers have released this picture of a car, described as a white, mid '90s four-door sedan. camry, honda or lexus, a dark-colored mismatched bumper and dark rims. the child was hit after 10:30 last night in the crosswalk on mission street between 4th and 5th streets. several san rafael residents are being called unpatriotic this morning for curious reason -- it's because they're flying the american flag outside their home. abc7 news reporter alyssa harrington says neighbors on rivera drive are putting up even more american flags as a show of

support. >> people have fought and died for this flag. >> dean morris has been flying old glory outside his home on san rafael's rivera drive for more than 20 years. but somebody has a problem with that. and anonymous letter was sent to morris and several of his neighbors. >> show some respect and fly your flags on important holidays, instead of trying to make a moronic statement. >> to sum it up, the letter accuses residents who display an american flag outside their homes of being confused republicans who don't agree with the president. chase pennington got one, too. >> it was definitely offensive. i'm just making all of these accusations about what type of person i am, what type of person anybody who flies a flag is. >> we don't know much about the sender, except the letters are postmarked outside of san francisco and on each energy, what do you know, a stamp with the american flag. neighbors are just as puzzled. >> i think it's ridiculous. >> they call this a close-knit

community and many of them put out flags to show solidarity. >> we didn't want to be intimidated by that kind of behavior. in fact we wanted to show a strong kind of statement, send a statement. >> even though morris and pennington think sending the note was a bizarre thing to do. >> the flag stands for your freedom and they have the freedom to send that letter out. >> their flags are staying up. in san rafael, alyssa hairington, abc7 news. the american right to protest was on display in oakland and berkeley, where demonstrators rallied over the police shooting of an unarmed teenager in missouri. hands up, don't shoot. >> the anti-police rally began last night at 14th and broadway in oakland. it started with the chanting, you heard there. in support of 18-year-old michael brown. who witnesses say had his hands up when an officer shot him. the tone different in berkeley at bancroft and telegraph. five store windows were broken

along telegraph avenue, a bakery and a bank. police in riot gear began moving protesters after warning they would be arrested if they did not disburse. people were arrest and booked into the berkeley jail. developing news, a handful of business owners are standing guard this morning, in ferguson, missouri. they want to prevent a repeat of last night's looting by protesters who were not only angry about the shooting death of the unarmed teenager, but also over information and video released by police. >> reporter: overnight, a shaky calm in ferguson is shattered by more violence and looting. protesters blocking streets, throwing bottles. police in armored vehicles and carrying military-style rifles responding with smoke bombs. this coming hours after the name of the officer that shot and killed unarmed teenager michael brown was revealed. >> the officer that was involved in the shooting of michael brown was darren wilson. >> the ferguson police chief naming officer darren wilson,

after a week of mounting pressure to identify the officer. officer wilson is a six-year veteran of the force. has had no prior disciplinary incidents. at this home in st. louis where neighbors say he lived, no sign of wilson. police confirming wilson has been relocated after a number of threats. authorities friday releasing this liquor store surveillance video. police say this video shows michael brown, 15 minutes before the shooting. allegedly taking a box of cigars without paying. then shoving the manager, who went after him. overnight, that very liquor store becoming the scene of violence and looting. protesters seen exiting the store with lottery tickets. family members calling the surveillance video a distraction. >> it infuriated us and it just added to distrust. >> the issue is when michael brown raised his hands and was kneeling to surrender, why did the police officer continue to fire and kill this young man. >> police also saying the

officer who shot and killed brown didn't know brown was a suspect in a robbery. and had initially stopped brown for blocking traffic. >> because they were walking down the middle of the street. >> hands up, don't shoot. >> and those protesters expected back out here today, authorities of course keeping a close eye on all of this and calling on those demonstrators to remain peaceful. alex perez, abc news, ferguson, who movement. a snoena county sheriffs deputy who shot and killed a a 13-year-old boy in santa rosa will return to work next week. deputies said he thought andy lopez's pellet gun was a real gun. there have been several protests and another one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the sheriffs headquarters. the officer returned to desk duty in december and will be designed to patrol unincorporated areas of sonoma county. the european union says a return to the status quo in gaza is not an option, offering to do something about it. the eu is offering to take

charge of border crossings in and out of gaza, and to work to prevent illegal arm shipments, gaza residents are taking advantage of extended cease-fire with israel to do some shopping. the main stumbling block in making the cease-fire last beyond monday is the blockage of gaza. gaza has been subject to a çó longstanding economic and financial blockade. praping to protest the blocka blockade, pro palestinian demonstrators are going to block a ship from entering the port of oakland. berth 57 at the port. organizers say hundreds of people will pick it to protest israel's latest attack on gaza and it's ongoing occupation of the gaza strip. >> we have new details about the fatal shooting of a german elementary school teacher on vacation in san francisco. the four men originally charged with murder have pleaded guilty to lesser charges. they'll spend five to nine years

in prison. in 2010, the victim was killed near union square in a shootout between rival gangs. the d.a. agreed to pleas on gun and assault charges, saying unreliable witnesses and a chaotic crime scene made it hard to prosecute. two other suspects could still face charges. a bay area business executive suspected of posing as añr tsa agent at sfo and gropin two women will not face charges. officers believe 53-year-old eric slighten was drunk when they say he lured two women, one at a ñrtime, into a plist room d groped them on july 15th. the san mateo district attorney's office said they won't press charges because they haven't been able to speak with the women. slighten is listed as director and partner of hong kong-based actis capital, singapore. four people were rescued by helicopter from a north bay cliff yesterday. this is video showing the people being lifted from the rock face.

they hiked about a third of the way up the steep slope but reached a spot where they couldn't go up any more and they couldn't get back down, either. all four were rescued safely. sad tales continue to come in from people who never made it to the paul mccartney concert at the stick thursday night because of the traffic nightmare. crowds of people enjoyed watching sir paul inside, but so many others were forced to listen from the outside. or just leave altogether. frustrated by a lack of answers as to what went wrong, some people are hoping they'll be compensated for the expensive tickets. here's abc7 news anchor amma dates with the details. >> michelle took pictures of the concert at candlestick, they're from really far away because she and her dad never made it into the stick. >> we ended up sitting in the car and we couldn't move, so we rolled down our window so we could hear the music from the, from candlestick. and basically listen to the whole concert in our car outside of the parking lot.

>> they knew they would hit rush hour traffic when they left san francisco for the concert around 6:00. thought they would make it on time. sadly, like so many others, she and her father never even got into the parking lot. >> i feel like something should be done and we should be compensated we paid so much money for each ticket and we didn't even get to enjoy it. >> san francisco police chief said he had the same number of officers out as he does on any 49ers game day and the same traffic controls. little consolation to those who couldn't get in. including a woman who flew in from philadelphia just for the concert. but never made it inside, even though her friend lives close by. >> she only lives like 20 minutes from candlestick so we gave two hours to get there. and four hours later, we still aren't in the stadium. or in the parking lot. >> traffic after the concert was just as brutal for some people. chief sursays unlike at 49ers games, everyone stayed until the very end.

tomorrow there will be another traffic test, this one for fans trying to get in and out of levi stadium for the 9 erz/broncos game, the firg nfl game at levi stadium. if you're going to the game. can you check out these live traffic cameras for the city of santa clara. we have a link at abc7news.com along with our own real-time maps with alternative routes on our traffic page. another traffic warning for you -- eastbound bore number 2 of the caldecott tunnel between oakland and or inda is closed from noon for realignment work. the closure will start again tonight at 8:00 and reopen tomorrow at noon. close again sunday night at 8:00 and reopen 7:00 a.m. on monday. the next closure of interstate 280 is scheduled for the afternoon of august 28th, that's a thursday. so caltrans can replace aging bridge hinges. only the northbound lanes will close, it will affect your friday morning commute into the

this is abc7 news. this morning, rick perry, the one-time and potentially future presidential candidate is embroiled in what could be the fight of his life. the powerful republican governor of texas has been indicted overnight. abc news reporter jeff delaney has the latest. >> rick perry's second act was well under way, another white house bid believed to be just around the corner. but this morning he's charged with two felony counts in texas. >> the grand jury returned a two-count indictment against james richard rick perry. >> count one, abuse of power. count two, coercing a public official. the charges stem from his decision to veto funding for the state's public integrity unit. which investigates public corruption. a district attorney in the unit was arrested for drunken driving and belligerent conduct.

he wanted her out. but she refused to step down. but prosecutors say, his conduct amounted to intimidation. >> i took into account, the fact that we're talking about a governor, but when it gets down to it the law is the law. >> overnight, his attorney called the charges outrageous and appalling, saying, this clearly represents political abuse of the court system. and there's no legal basis in this decision. it may be a difficult legal case to prove, lawyers tell abc news, but the indictment presents fresh political trouble. his rehabilitation tour was going strong. it's been nearly three years since this -- >> the commerce and -- let's see, i can't, the third one, i can't, sorry.çó >> when we caught up with him in iowa, he was looking ahead with optimism. >> how tough do you think it is to make a second impression on vote sners. >> i think second chances is what america has always been about. >> today perry may be asking for a third chance.

he has an arraignment at the county courthouse in austin. democrats are calling for him to resign. republicans say it's a partisan witch hunt. abc news, washington. 37 years ago today, singer and actor, elvis presley died suddenly at his mansion in tennessee. the anniversary of his death brings elvis fans from around the world to his graceland home in memphis, last night hundreds of people held a candlelight vigil for the man who will forever be known as the king. today, commemorations are planned at his graceland rests place, presley still holds the record for most songs charting in billboard's top 40 and top 100. this week's death of robin williams not only sent shock waves through the world of entertainment, it is shedding light on the battle of millions of people wage against depression. abc news anchor sheryl talked about how many entertainers face

one of his children and that'sñ when he says, his animal instinct kicked in. animal experts say coyotes rarely attack humans, but probably best not to take the chance. you've probably seen the videos all over your facebook feed. some 15 million people posting and commenting about the ice bucket challenge. 49ers coach jim harbaugh took the challenge yesterday, issued by his brother, john harbaugh, of the baltimore ravens. he said he was not accepting the same challenge issued by seahawks coach pete carroll. harbaugh says he has a bigger challenge with carroll, he calls it the big one. last year the 49ers lost to the seahawks in the nfc championship game. the ice bucket challenge is part of an awareness campaign for lou gehrig's disease, or als, which cause as loss of muscle control and ultimately takes away a person's ability to eat, speak and breathe. to call attention to the disease, people everywhere are

there is a link on our website, abc7 news.com. right now runners taking part in the town's half-marathon in oakland. there are major road closures around the city. so if you want to avoid the area, you see in red here on the map. that's the route. 13.1 miles it started at 7:00 a.m. at franco gala plaza. looping around the city and ending back at the plaza. so it's 8:21, an hour and 21 minutes. lisa and i would be long down. >> are you kidding in. >> very fast. >> as we eat our candy here. >> you know, it's going to be a beautiful day with sunshine in oakland later on. right now, lots of clouds, you can see behind us, low clouds and fog. leer in san francisco, the warm spot today, our east bay valleys. it's not going to get too warm out there. just on the edge of your screen. live doppler 7 hd you can see cloud cover and a twist in the clouds. will allow for an area of low pressure to get a little closer

tomorrow and that's going to bring a slight cooldown. from our roof camera, you can see things are quite still we're looking at 58 in gilroy, 57, half moon bay and mild anywhere san carlos, and san jose. still cloudy there. and just off to the right of mount diablo. this view from our east bay hills camera and this beautiful marine layer has stayed anywhere from about 1500 feet to around 2,000 feet the past couple of days. now this morning we're looking at sunshine from fairfield, concord and livermore with the numbers coming up slowly in the north bay. 47 degrees this morning in napa. right now, 55, still laggingç behind. and in the south bay, san jose looking at cloudy skies and with the bay and fog, low clouds will look for them to reveal themselves into mostly sunny conditions around the bay. by 10:00, 11:00, that will lead to a mild to warm afternoon and the steady pattern takes us

through next week which will keep temperatures pretty seasonal. high pressure is off the coast, an area of low pressure that will drop down a little bit further. get a little closer to the coast. that will bring some cooling tomorrow. but the sea breeze keeps bringing the comfortable weather across the bay. the quiet pattern with us all in all, throughout the next several days. in fact the warmest day in livermore, 91 degrees. tomorrow coming down about five degrees for a high of 86 and we stay there all throughout the week. we'll keep temperatures really fairly seasonal. but you know, if you want to get the warmth. you have to go out to the valleys. it's just mild from around the bay. and kind of cool at the coast. so if you're set on going to the beach. 74, the warmest locations for our coastside in santa cruz. 82 in san jose. 79 in milpitas, with upper 70s, menlo park. san francisco coming in at 68

later on today. and up in the north bay, notice we have a few oranges here coming into play. and that brings us to sonoma at 81, 83 inñi calistoga. in the east bay, look for 78 union city. 80 in castro valley. warmer inland, 88 in pleasanton. 91 antioch and brentwood, 92. the seven-day forecast will bring temperatures not only seasonal today, but even though we drop a few degrees tomorrow, right on through the weekend. we'll look for numbers to drop a little further by the middle of the week inland. not much change elsewhere. by friday, we'll keep the skies with some sunshine, but more clouds should visit us. ?< very powerful of you. thanks, lisa. >> what next, what may be the most extensively studied meteorite in the history of the universe. wher

and another vantage point from emeryville. pretty gray out there low 70s later on today in oakland. it is sunny and concord, livermore and fairfield. and we'll look for plenty of sun today. within the next two hours or so. this fog continues to burn back. and sunshine will be revealed for almost everyone. if you're at ocean beach or stinson, it will be cool there. but plenty of 70s to near 80 around the bay and even perhaps a few low 90s out towards the valley. katie? >> lisa. health officials are preparing for the worst outbreak of the west nile virus on record. in santa clara county, five people have tested positive for the disease and one is still in the hospital. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson reports. >> a tiny insect carrying a potent disease. santa clara county health officials say three men and two women over the age of 50 tested positive for the west nile virus. one person remains in the hospital. >> you'll get things like a

severe headache, you'll have fever of course. and you may have what we call alternative mental stall us, you may not be with it. >> health officials expected a bad summer for west nile after seeing a spike in dead birds. 700 bird carcasses infected by west nile. by comparison, last year, they found 88. >> this is the record-breaking year of all time. >> from the location of the dead birds, officials know the infected mosquitos are concentrated in sunnyvale, santa clara, cupertino, campbell, parts of san jose and mountain view. >> slightly concerning, i didn't think it was a big issue here. >> ann miller spends a lot of time outside walking dogs. >> i wasn't sure how serious it was. >> five people have been infected so far. >> that's not good. >> it's not panic time. it's awareness time. >> russ palm wer vector control recommends cleaning out any standing water near your home because a new mosquito colony can hatch as few as five days.

vector control also increased the number of foggings from 11 last year to 16 this year. >> i'm glad they're on top of it. >> as health officials continue to track the disease, they're also trying to establish what caused it to spike. >> we think that it could be because of the drought. and it's concentrating the water sources for the birds and also the mosquitos. 1 c1 >> he recommends using insect repellent and covering up if you go outside at dusk or dawn. in mountain view, tiffany wilson, abc7 news. the marin humane society has released new video to help track down people who continue to drop off dozens of cats in the middle of the night. here's the surveillance video from early monday morning in novato. the people in the white suv left behind 24 cats. the humane society spokesperson says it's the fourth time in the last 18 months this has happened. in all, more than 100 cats have been dropped off. >> our best guess is someone does have quite a lot of cats. they are not spag and neutering

the cats, they're probably kept indoors, maybe their friends and neighbors don't even know this person has this many cats. it's clear they were loved. but part of the loving an animal means spaying and neutering them. so we don't end up with 100 homeless cats that now need homes. >> the extra cats have put a strain on the humane society staff and budget. adoption fees of $100 to $125 have been waived the rest of the month to help find the cats homes. rescue crews in contra costa county saved a dog trapped at a a waste treatment facility in richmond. the dog was stuck on a small ledge a few feet from untreated sewage. animal control officers think the female pit bull may have been down there for a few days. rescuers used a harness to pull the dog to safety and she collapsed exhausted as soon as she was freed. the dog is now being treated for dehydration. starting today, residents within the 415 area code can begin dialing 1 and the area

code before their calls in preparation for next year's code rollout in february of 2015, parts of san francisco and marin county will be assigned a new 628 area code. when that happens, all local callers even within the 415 area code will have to dial an 11-digit number to make a call. that's 1 plus the area code, plus the number. officials want customers to practice using area codes over the next six months to make the 628 rollout as smooth as possible. teachers at a san francisco school are heartbroken after thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of classroom technology. it happened at glen parks school on thursday, security footage shows two of the four people school officials believe stole the 18 ipads and a teacher's wallet. because the school had just finished an orientation session, many doors were unlocked. and nobody was suspicious of people walking the halls. >> they completely blended in with our community. they did, they looked like

parents. and their interactions were very appropriate as to what a parent and a teacher would interact about. >> somebody spread joy and love to us and somebody took it from us. >> a departing teacher gifted the ipads to anna fulton's third grade classroom last year. school leaders and parents hope donors will replace what was stolen. new this morning, president obama is talking about the increasing costs of college and what his administration is doing to help students not rack up mountains of debt. the president says he and first lady michelle only finished paying off their student loans ten years ñ)=9ñ president obama believes everyone should be able to afford higherñi education, addi he's doing what he can to assist students. >> we reformed the student loan system so more money goes to students instead of big banks. we expanded grants and college tax credits for students and families. we took action to offer millions of students a chance their
