i'm larry diehl. >> and i'm sharon jennings. pg&e pled not guilty to new charges that came out of the san bruno pipeline explosion. the utility faces record fines if convicted. >> vic lee joins us in the newsroom with the dwementd developed today. >> about three weeks ago, the

u.s. attorney issued a superseding or new indictment against pg&e which more than doubled the criminal charges. none of the executives showed up for the arraign mentd, but after prosecutors read the indictment, an attorney for pg&e responded not guilty to all charges. >> pg skn e faces one count of obstructed the federal investigation into the pipeline explosion and 23 counts of violating the safety act. it killed eight people and injured 66 others. 38 homes were destroyed, 17 others badly damaged. if federal prosecutors have their way, the giant utility could be slapped with a $1.3 billion fine. pg&e maintains it did nothing wrong. >> no pg&e employee intentionally violated any laws. when any errors are made, employees are acting in good faith. >> some disagree.

>> we believe it's high time pg&e cleaned up its act, that it understood and took responsibility, took full responsibility for the negligence, for the inappropriate operations. >> jackson wrote this letter to u.s. attorney melinda haag supporting the federal prosecution. she's also asking that the penalties include imposing an independent monitor to make sure they're doing their jobs without collusion. >> they have failed and they continue to fail to do so, and that they continue to perpetrate an inappropriate too cozy relationship with the utility they are tasked with regulating. >> san bruno city officials charged that e-mails covered between pg&e officials and pg&e have a close relationship. the latest is inviting an

official to a safety symposium that was almost identical to a draft written by a pg&e staffer. they issued a statement saying in part the agency's president directed staff to cancel it immediately to eliminate any possible public concern over the fairness of the cpuc's process. now, the city of san brown brun also asking the u.s. attorney do you summon the money from the fines to set up a trust which would advocate for safer pipeline lines on fop of the possible fines the state cpuc is considering fining them as much as $5 billion for the san bruno explosion and fire. vic lee, abc news. >> abc 7 news confirms a motorcyclist who dies after crashing into an suv was coming from a rolling side show. it began last night at the port of loakland.

nearly 500 vehicles took part in the side show, traveling to the bay bridge toll plaza. it stopped traffic, shut down part of the freeway. this is video from a previous side show, a neighbor who did not want to be identified says he saw last night's side show and couldn't believe what was happening. >> it's crazy because everybody was doing whatever they want to do, and it's not okay. i don't understand. like i said, i have been here, what, two months now, and that's not -- that's not okay. >> the chp says it initiated two pursuits and then called them off because of the dangers to other drivers. no arrests were made, but officers are hoping to identify some of the drivers in that sideshow from traffic cameras. >> a bicyclist is treated for head injuries this afternoon after being hit by a light rail train near the giants ballpark. you can see what happened to his bicycle wheel. this happened after noon on k and third street. that cyclist is a 30 yeert man.

it appears he ran a red light and is to blame for the accident, but his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. >> san jose police are looking for the driver of a fatal hit and run near a golf course. this happened before 10:00 last night. right near the los lagos golf course. the man was crossing the street, possibly on a bicycle, when he was hit by a black sedan. the man who was hit was taken to the hospital and died this morning. >> a concord intersection remains closed at this hour after an accident this morning involving a pg&e truck. you can see that truck crashed into a power pole at the corner of concord and haynes drive. the force of the crash caused the truck to flip on its side and it brought down several power wires. the driver was not hurt. no other vehicles were involved. pg&e restored power to most of the customers this morning. >> this is cell phone video of a man with a knife inside a muni bus this morning. police say the man stabbed a

glide memorial staff member moments earlier and took running to the bus at market and sixth. he was detained. police did recover the knife. the glide worker was stabbed in the shoulder with a kitchen knife. the victim was taken to the hospital. he's expected to survive. glide serves free meals to those living in poverty. >> in oakland, firefighters had to deal with complications after dealing with a massive fire in a warehouse. the battle was made worse by electrical and gas lines. >> the fwier was huge, it lit up the night sky and jumped from building to building. oakland firefighters trying to get aggressive but struggled out of the gate when 8 or 9 engines all tried to get water from the same water main. >> we did have problems with the pressure. we had numerous engine companies trying to get water out of the hidrbts at the same time.

>> that wasn't even the biggest challenge. then they had to deal with the dangers of a live wire falling to the ground. >> the frames at one point were as high as the power line, and it caught the power line on fire which stacaused the power line fall. >> one man who was trying to save his dog from the yard next door saw the power line fall. >> i was only in danger when the wire came down, because it did hit the fire -- one of the firemen. and i was pretty close to him. but they got us out of there pretty quickly. >> he also managed to save his guard dog. firefighters say this fire st t started in an abandoned camper shell in oakland. it spread to an abandoned carpet retailer and then to another warehouse, and then to a home. the red cross helped relocate the four adult residents. a dog in that home died in the fire. firefighters are still trying to figure out the fire's cause. >> there was reported that there

were squatters in the area, but the original cause was an outside camper shell. >> one firefighter was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. because of the damage to the power line at one point 5700 customers did not have power. by 8:00 in the morning, only 29 customers didn't have power, and they'll probably be without electricity for the rest of the day. in oakland, amy hollyfield. >> cloudy skies there. cloudy skies still this afternoon. >> yeah, and clearly, much cooler than we have been used to the past few weeks. kristen joins us now with the look at the forecast. >> it's been cloudy today, most of the day. we had drizzle in the early morning hours and it is, as you pointed out, cooler than average. i'll show you what's going on right now. we have extensive cloud cover, certainly near the coast, and in the inland areas are not completely cloud free, and as for the drizzle, well, we had pretty impressive rainfall totals overnight.

80s. a complete look at the week ahead in a moment. >> spencer, thank you. a new profile of who is hungry in america indicates the rebound in the economy is making it very difficult for some people to feed their families. >> the situation in silicon valley is even more troubling. david louie live at san jose's second harvest food bank which crunched all the numbers, david. >> well, larry and sheryl, this may surprise you. in an area where some people drive teslas or work as software engineers, 250,000 people rely on food every month from second harvest food bank. some families are having a difficult choice on whether to spend money on food or other necessities. the majority of people coming to food pantries are making less than $20,000 a year. this woman has two daughters ages 12 and 8 and her local food bank helps to stretch the family

budget. >> i want to make sure they're eating healthy for them to grow up and be strong and their brains functioning. to me, you have to eat right to make sure everything functions. >> it reflects tough choices they make. 68% have to chose between buying food and paying for transportation. 63% say they have to choose between buying food and paying utilities and 67% say they buy inexpensive unhealthy foods to stretch the budget. 2 thirds of clients have high blood pressure, more than a third have diabetes. the typical food bank client is coming monthly versus every other month in other parts of the country. the executive director of sake sacred heart community service in san jose. >> we're seeing folks coming with increased frequency and asking for additional help. we're doing things like utility assi assistance. >> in order to feed their families, some are moving if they can find cheaper rent so they can keep food on the table. >> there are a large number of

ill. even so, it took crews more than 45 minutes to convince the man to get into the rescue boat. reports say the man purchased the boat only a few hours before he set off. he had only a few supplies, and a life jacket was not among them. >> very bad planning. >> yeah. >> back to school time for kids all over the bay area. >> one school in the east bay trying to figure out how to replace thousands of dollars of school supplies stolen from their campus. >> alyssa harrington is live with that story. >> that's right, the burglaries happened over summer break. the alameda sheriff's department has not made any arrests. now the school is hoping to raise enough money to replace the items that were stolen. >> why take things from children who have -- whose families are just barely making it? >> the principal says thieves targeted colonial acres elementary school not once but twice over the summer. the first time, july 31st.

they broke into a storage closet outside a classroom. before the thieves busted in, boxes of supplies were stacked this high with glue sticks, c n cranncra crayons and pencil. >> we store our cameras, projectors, a new computer in there, some computer monitors. >> the second brglerry happens just weeks later. this time two storage sheds were hit, one filled with pe equipment, the other belongs to the boys and girls club. >> it puts a damper on things. >> this man teaches bilingual kindergarten. he said many families who come here are low income, and the burglar or burglars took more than they might have realized. >> you're hurting the children, their families, the people that come to school as a safe space. >> parents and students are equally frustrated. >> i'm so sad because it's

really important for the students. >> i don't like people taking all our things from other people. >> since the break-in, the school replaced the locks and installed security panels on some doors. the first day of class is next monday. if you want to help out, the principal has set up a go fund me page, called colonial acres supplies. they're still looking for their first donor. if goal is to raise $10,000. liven alameda county, abc 7 news. >> thank you. >> the family of 2-year-old mi'yana gregory skilled in a hit and run accident is pleading with the driver to come forward. mi'yana was in a cross walk with her aunt and twin brother when she was hit about 10:30 friday night. the three were leaving a movie theater. last night, the family held a vigil at the accident site. security cameras caught this picture of the car. it's a white sedan, possibly a toyota, lexus, or honda.

it also has a mismatched dark colored bumper and rims. we hope you can help. it's the only lead investigators have. >> the nation's biggest trash holler is suing the city of oakland over a $1 billion contract. waste management solutions is one of two companies that bid on a contract. the city says it chose a smaller, oakland-based company because it promised lower rates. waste management claims that oakland voted for a company with, quote, personal and political connections to kournl members. the suit is asking they award the contract to waste management. no one from the city attorney's office respaunlded to our request for comment. >> let's head outside with spencer christian. >> spencer, i saw a tweet from your colleague, mike, our colleague, actually, saying there was actual measurable drizzle today. >> there was measurable drizzle. we had a few hundredths of an inch around the bay area. nothing to put a dent in the drought, but we're happy to see

kneprecipitation we can get. we might get more tonight. or early tomorrow morning. we see lots of clouds along the coast and some areas inland as well. a cloudy day for much of the bay area, but up north, we have thunderstorms and upper level low up in the eureka area, well north of clear lake, kicking up thunderstorms in the northern most part of the state. that has strtriggers concern ab wildfire. up to mt. shasta and beyond until 11:00 tonight. meanwhile, here's how it looks at the golden gate bridge. lots of clouds hovering there. we'll see areas of brizal near the coast and bay. warmer areas lie ahead. they have been showing that low up there kicking up the thunderstorms. now north is also producing a cooler pattern for us in the bay area. it's counter clockwise circulation sweeping clouds into the area and moisture that may produce drizzle overnight. there may be a few damp spots tomorrow morning during the

commuting hours, but by afternoon tomorrow, we'll see mainly sunny skies except for lingering clouds at the coast and maybe a lingering spot or two of drizzle near the coast tomorrow afternoon. certainly, we expect a sunnier day than today. overnight, with the low temperatures mainly in the mid- to upper 50s, perhaps 60 in oakland, probably the mildest location, and tomorrow, look for mainly sunny skies by afternoon in the south bay with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, around 79 in san jose, 82 in morgan hill. on the peninsula, midto upper 70s. 77 at mountain view, and downtown san francisco, 66, 68 in south san francisco. in the north bay, we'll see high temperatures reaching 78 at santa rosa. 80 at sonoma and napa. east bay high, 72 at oakland, sfe70 at berkeley, 78, castro valley, and the inland east bay will be nice and uniformly low. low 80s in concord, walnut

and fishery measured this gator at 15 feet. weighing more than 1,000 pounds. that's the biggest gator ever. legally killed by a hunter in alabama. it was not easy. the gator destroyed a winch assembly because it was so heavy. it was used to hoist the reptile. >> how do you catch something like that? >> carefully. >> a man in tennessee captured video of these bear cubs wrestling in his backyard. they're going at it. it's rough and tumble. scott says he captured the video around lunch time from the upper deck at his home in gatlin brg in the smoky mountains. he said while the cubs were horsing around, their mom was nearby keeping a close eye on them. you know, hey, here's my brother. going to knock him down. >> smart not to go in the backyard. >> you don't want to be in the middle of that. >> you know, parents, emotional day when parents drop the kids off at college because it's sad and because of all the money that is expended. >> imagine doing that not just for one child but for five.

president obama is sending attorney general eric holder to ferguson, missouri, to meet with federal officials investigating the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager. meanwhile, the state's governor has turned to the national guard for help after another weekend of violent protests. abc news reporter marcie gonzalez with more from ferguson, missouri. >> let me call once again to seek some understanding rather than simply holler at each other. let's seek to heal rather than to wound each other. >> today, the missouri national guard moving in. packing up the state highway patrol and securing the streets of ferguson after another night of this, looting, molotov cocktails and gunshots fired at

police. officers responding with armored trucks and tear gas. today, a stark contrast, only a few protesters out now, compared to the hundreds we have seen lining the streets every day since unarmed teenager michael brown was killed by an officer more than a week ago. police maintain that the officer shot brown after he was physically assaulted by the teen and his friend. today, the county medical examiners handed their autopsy results over to the prosecutor's office, confirming the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head and chest. brown's family ordering their own autopsy, the preliminary results showing brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head. >> there's no gunshot residues on the skin's surface. so that the muzzle of the gun was at least 1 to 2 feet away. the muzzle at the time of discharge. it could have been 30 feet away.

now as the justice department district a third autopsy, brown's mother says all she wants is justice. >> what is justice to you? >> being fair. arresting this man and making him accountable for his actions. >> and we just learned a grand jury could begin hearing evidence in this case on wednesday. that's the same day that attorney general eric holder is scheduled to come here to meet with federal agents investigating brown's death. marcie gonzalez, abc news, ferguson, missouri. and today, the president talked about the progress being made against an aggressive militant group in iraq. the u.s. went on 15 new airstrikes near the mosul dam today. this all helped kurdish and iraqi forces regain control of the dam from isis soldiers. u.s. and iraqi officials were concerned that isis could blow up the dam. they have sent a masage 60-foot wave of water into mosul and even affect baghdad 250 miles away. >> the mosul dam fell under

terrorist control earlier this month and is directly tied to our objective of protecting americans in iraq. if that dam was breached, it could have proven catastrophic. >> the president insisted today the u.s. air strikes will only be used to protect americans and prevent a humanitarian disaster. >> the world health organization is urging ebola affected countries to start screening all passengers leaving international airports, sea ports, and major ground crossings. the who says the risk of the ebola virus transmitted during air travel is low, but anyone with an illness consistent with the virus should not be allowed to travel unless it's part of an appropriate medical evacuation. the agency's also calls on west african countries unaffected by the outbreak to strengthen their own ability to detect and contain new cases. >> the american woman being treated for ebola in atlanta finally got to see her husband. he had been in quarantine, unable to meet with his wife

nancy until yesterday. this photo was taken before she became sick. nancy was brought back to georgia on august 5th. she contracted the disease in liberia, where she and her husband worked in a clinic for obola patients. nancy remains in isolation at emory university hospital. her condition said to be improving. >> we have the latest on tex techgovernor rick perry fighting back as he was indicted on two felony counts of abuse of power. he's calling the prosecution a farce. abc news reporter jeff zelany has that story. >> texas governor rick perry is gearing up for his day in court. his legal team spent the day preparing him to defend against a felony indictment. he's charged with abusish the power of his office. >> let me be clear about this. governor perry will fight this indictment 100%, and at the end of the day, he will prevail. >> but his texas swagger still on full display. >> we don't settle political differences with indictments in this country.

it is outrageous. >> it's shaping up to be a southe southern soap opera. at the have of the case is rosemary lehmberg, the district attorney in austin. he cut funding to her office as accused of trying to force her from her job, leaving a state agency that investigates corruption. he said he had good reason to do it. her drunken driving arrest last year. a jailhouse video of the top prosecutor has gone viral. she's kicking a door, sticking out her dung, and even pretending to fire a gun. >> stopped for dwi with a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit. >> she served 45 days in jail and is seeking treatment, but the elected official refused to resign. prosecutors say ingovernor committed a crime by defunding her office and trying to push her out. >> the grand jury has spoken that there's reason to believe he committed two crimes, two felony crimes. >> these charges come just as

perry's political rebound is getting under way. his legal team said they will fight the charges aggressively while he keeps his presidential ambitions alive. he's headed to new hampshire later this week. and it turns out just before his death, robin williams granted a wish to a dying fan. he reported a video message for a terminaly ill cancer patient. >> hi, vivian. robin williams saying, hey, girl. what's going down there in new zealand. sending my love to you, jack, and sophie. mark this off your bucket list. i say hey, hey, hey, what's going on? it's all right, all right, all right. i'm channeling matthew mcconaughey. much love to you, baby. >> how touching. 21-year-old vivian of new zealand was diagnosed with lung, colon, and liver cancer in january. she included meet robin williams on her bucket list of things to do before she died. when her condition deteriorated and she was too ill to travel, one of her friends contacted williams who agreed to e-mail her that short video message.

has hit nearly $250,000. a new government study finds an average middle income family with a baby born in 2013 will spend $245,000 until their son or daughter turns 18. that does not include the cost of college. the u.s. department of agriculture says the cost of raising a child is up almost 2% from 2012. these figures are based on the cost of housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care, education, and as any of us can attest, many, many, many other expenses. a new survey shows many americans are not preparing themselves for retirement. maybe the two stories are tied together. a survey of 1,000 people shows 36% of them have nothing saved for retirement. this includes 14% of americans 65 and older, and 26% of those 50 to 64. many people realize that they're not on track in saving for their retirement, but most said the cost of living and day to day expenses are the reasons they're

not prepared. >> trying to live check to check. >> turgt is taking a step to help the chain rebound from its recent sales slump. they plan to expand their hours at most of the stores nationwide. until now, the chain's nearly 1800 stores typically stayed open until 10:00 on weekdays and 9:00 on the weekends. but starting next month, the new hours will keep some stores open as late as midnight. analysts say it's 1 way to fight back against online retailers including amazon. >> shopping online is available at the click of a button or a tap on the smartphone. target says they can't be in the business of turning away shoppers at any time of day. >> target also hopes to compete with walmart which keeps 77% of their stores open 24 hours a day. target said it's listening to their guests and customizing the shopping experience. it's a gamble considering just 3% of americans shop after 10:00 p.m. >> now to the mother sparking a
