we begin this thursday morning with the u.s. government's reaction to the execution of american journalist james foley. calling them savages, the director of the fbi says the full force of the united states will be brought to bear against the isis militants who murdered foley. >> abc's susan saulny joins us now from washington with all the latest developments. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, michelle and devin. $100 million, that's how much ransom isis wanted from the u.s. for foley according to a report in "the new york times." a new barrage of american air strikes over iraq targeting the terrorist group isis after its release of a gruesome video showing the execution of american journalist james foley. presidential obama, who was called out by name in the video by an executioner demanding an end to air strikes in iraq, instead vowed relentless pursuit. >> jim was taken from us in an act of violence that shocks the conscience of the entire world. we will be vigilant, and we will be relentless.

when people harm americans anywhere, we do what's necessary to see that justice is done. >> reporter: despite their grief, foley's parents spoke graciously from their home in new hampshire. >> his last words were, "i wish i had more time to see my family. " >> we just pray that jim's death can bring our country together in a stronger way. >> reporter: to topple isis, the president has many options. he could funnel more weapons to iraqis and kurds on the front lines. he could send more u.s. special forces to advise iraqis. the bigger step, he could take the fight to syria by launching air strikes for the first time on isis targets in that country. the white house revealed that a secret rescue mission to save foley and other american captives inside syria had failed earlier this summer. in the video released wednesday, isis threatened to kill yet another american hostage if the

air strikes continue. michelle, devin. >> abc's susan saulny live in washington this morning. thanks, susan. well, next, some breaking news now from the middle east. hamas says three of its top military leaders have been killed in an israeli air strike. that announcement came just hours after the collapse of another round of peace talks and a resumption of rocket fire by hamas militants into israel. israel says it won't call off its gaza operation until all rocket fire out of palestinian territory has stopped. back here at home, a relatively calmer scene overnight in ferguson, missouri. >> yeah, protesters took to the streets again, but last night's demonstrations were markedly smaller and more orderly as the police shooting case that sparked it all is now off to a grand jury. abc's tahman bradley is in ferguson this morning live with us for the latest. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: devin and michelle, good morning. we had rain and thunderstorms here early last night, and that might have helped cooler heads prevail. it was much more peaceful here overnight.

police tell us they only made six arrests. it was a quieter night here in ferguson. >> all: we want justice. >> tonight was a very good night in ferguson. >> reporter: peaceful demonstrators filling the streets while behind closed doors, the wheels of justice are starting to spin. a grand jury is now reviewing evidence in the shooting death of michael brown. >> they will have absolutely everything that there is. >> reporter: but it could take months to decide whether darren wilson, the white officer who shot and killed the unarmed black teen, will face criminal charges. many in this community want the officer arrested. >> arrest darren wilson. >> reporter: the police union says it's too soon to pass judgment. >> he has been vilified in the media and by the politicians. >> reporter: a source close to wilson told abc news that before the shooting, the officer suffered a serious facial injury and supporters of wilson point to this videotape showing brown's body lying in the street and in the background, a witness describes what he saw. >> police got out and ran after

him. the next thing i know he's coming back towards the police. the police had his gun drawn on him. >> reporter: that would conflict with witnesses who said brown was standing still with his hands raised when wilson opened fire. attorney general eric holder visited the area on wednesday. he tried to ease tensions by telling the majority black community about his own encounters with police. holder is promising a thorough investigation. >> my hope is that that will have -- give people some degree of confidence that the appropriate things are being done by their federal government. >> reporter: holder met with michael brown's parents and promised them a fair investigation. devin, michelle. >> tahman bradley live in ferguson, thank you. meantime, police in nearby st. louis have released this video as officers shot and killed a man on tuesday. it happened just miles from the protests in ferguson. they say the man, an alleged shoplifter, had a knife. in the video you can see he refused to back off. after repeated orders, the

officers who shot the man are now on administrative leave. former virginia governor bob mcdonnell has taken the stand for the first time in his public corruption trial. mcdonnell testified yesterday about his sometimes volatile relationship with his wife maureen suggesting the two could not have conspired because they were largely estranged. the couple is accused of accepting more than $165,000 in cash and gifts from a political supporter in exchange for favors. if convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison. breaking news, the american doctor who contracted ebola will be released from the hospital today. dr. kent brantley who was evacuated from liberia earlier this month has been treated at emory university in atlanta. brantley was the first ever ebola patient to be treated in the u.s. he received an experimental serum known as zmapp. still no word if that's why he survived. brantley plans to speak publicly later this morning. a tornado touched down outside detroit causing damage before blowing out of the area.

sirens warned the funnel cloud was approaching with winds clocking about 75 miles an hour. it blew branches off trees and flipped a few vehicles over. and severe weather also tore across central tennessee outside knoxville uprooting trees, damaging homes and knocking down power lines. some residents were even trapped inside their homes, but with no wet weather in today's forecast, repairs and cleanup will go much faster. there will be some stormy weather today though. let's take a look at the forecast. showers and thunderstorms will stretch across most of the northern u.s. today from the upper midwest through the ohio valley and into the northeast. thunderstorms will rumble across the southwest into florida. the southeast will be steamy today, and it will be a scorcher all along the gulf coast. >> and the midwest is in for heat today with temperatures in the mid-90s, but it will be much cooler in the northeast and northwest. only in the 70s. well, coming up, big brown hit with a breach. what u.p.s. is saying about a possible theft of customer

11th are at risk but the company says it's not aware of any fraud related to the attack. an outside security firm found the virus in computers at 51 u.p.s. stores nationwide. more fallout from target's massive data breach sinking profits. the retailer's new earnings report says its earnings dropped by nearly 62% from the year before. target also lowered its annual profit outlook for the second time in three months. its shares are down almost 13% over the past year. bank of america is set to announce today that it will pay a record fine of nearly $17 billion over accusations it sold faulty mortgage-backed securities. about 7 billion of that fee will go to consumers in the form of modified home loans and refinanced mortgages. hostess brands says it's closing the original twinkie factory in illinois where twinkies have been baked for 84 years. the company blames a drop in demand for twinkies after a flood of cheaper twinkie knockoffs hit the market. some union workers suspect a different motive.

west coast debut causing a stir in the port of los angeles leading more than a dozen battleships and sailboats in the city's tall ships festival. the duck will stick around through sunday. now for a look at your morning road conditions, drivers will face wet roads again from the upper midwest through the great lakes region and ohio valley and up into the northeast today. showers will also cause some slippery conditions along the gulf coast in florida and throughout the southwest. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in minneapolis, chicago, detroit, d.c. and philly. now a miraculous story. a young man surviving a 100-foot fall from a rock face in colorado. 21-year-old dylan schuetz is hospitalized with several broken bones. his two friends there saw it happen. schuetz is an experienced climber, but he says the gymnastics he's done is what saved his life. he was falling head first but flipped so he would land on his feet.

schuetz was flown to a hospital where he's already undergone several surgeries. we're learning new details this morning about the final resting place of actor robin williams. tmz and radaronline are reporting that the official death certificate for the hollywood legend says he was cremated the day after he died and his ashes were scattered in san francisco bay. williams committed suicide ten days ago. the coroner is still awaiting toxicology results to see if there were any chemicals in his system when he died. an emotional verdict in a murder trial in sacramento, california, triggered brawls both inside and outside the courthouse. two gang members were convicted of murder in the shooting death of a young mother caught in the cross fire of a gunfight. once outside the courthouse, family members on both sides started fighting. here in new york, getting away with another security breach. palestinian supporters unfurled a large flag from the manhattan bridge yesterday evening as about 500 demonstrators marched across the nearby brooklyn bridge. it's the second apparent

security breach on a new york city bridge in a month. in july two german artists climbed the brooklyn bridge and swapped out old glory for two white flags. a high school senior in tennessee this morning received or yesterday rather received an in-school suspension after saying "bless you" to a friend who sneezed in class. school officials claim kendra turner actually shouted bless you from across the classroom disrupting a lesson. turner is defending her actions saying she was standing up for her religious beliefs. the school has not yet commented publicly about the incident. and in ft. myers, florida, a police officer is rejecting the label of hero saying he was just doing his job when he rescued a man in a wheelchair during a dangerous thunderstorm. the dash cam was rolling when officer gill benitez found michael arnold stuck in his nonfunctioning electric wheelchair a block from the arm in the pouring rain. he pushed him home, dried him off and waited for his family to arrive. >> sir, i am very grateful for your help. i didn't even catch your name.

o'clock. a woman lives in one apartment says it sounded like an explosion or car crash. the four started outside behind one of two, two story buildings that burned. here is how it unfolded. >> units arrived and immediately they required additional resources and the mixed use occupancy with commercial on the bottom and residential on top, so the fire turned into a four alarm fire. >> we understand the fire took out power lines and firefighters got the fire under control after 1:00 o'clock this morning. right now 30 people are displaced. no one was hurt. the red cross is there helping anyone would needs it. there is one fire crew on the scene. one lane of international boulevard is closed. in word on what started
