finding three smoke detectors. >> an overnight fire destroyed two apartment buildings in oakland neighbors say they heard two loud pops before flames sprang up from the back of the buildings. you can see just how intense the fire got. residents had to run, some carrying family members down the stairs to safety. this morning their belongings were scooped into a dump truck. >> now, they burned everything. nothing. no glow, no nothing. >> they lost everything. investigators say they found fire works behind buildings. 33 residents now have to find a new place to live. damage estimated at $900,000. >> another big bank forced many homeowners into foreclosure and contributed to the financial collapse. nick smith joins us with more.

attorney general harris decided to appeal a ruling that declares california death penalty un-constitutional. last month a judge in los angeles decided the death penalty takes too long to carry out making it arbitrary and unfair. harris opposes the death penalty but promised voters she would enforce it and says the decision should be reviewed because it is not supported by the law, and undermines important protections nobody has been executed in california since 2006. >> caltrans tonight says a judge's decision could teal yeah the opening of a controversial freeway project by a year. it's the highway 101 bypass. environmentalists are trying to force caltrans to scale down the project, paving over protected

wetlands they claim there hasn't been environmental review of the dirt for the project. a judge now blocked caltrans from moving the dirt until a hearing on september 8th. >> a billionaire may be forced to negotiate with the state over restoring access to martin's beach in half moon bay. if the governor signs it, it would force him to negotiate with the state lands commission the bill says if the commission cannot reach an agreement, it has to consider buying the access road. multiple organizations have sued him and lobbied for the bill. he blocked a private access road to the beach in 2008. he says he st not need permission to close the road. >> a common travel concern is whether the airline is going to lose your luggage. but travellers can be quite

an american doctor infected with the ebola virus walked out

of an atlanta hospital today saying he is thrilled to be alive and well. the story of his survival. >> a buzz greeted doctor kent brantly. >> today, it's a miraculous day. >> the doctor turned ebola survivor using his time to say thank you. >> through care of the missionary team in liberia, use of an experimental drug and expert ease in resources of the team, god saved my life. >> a direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. >> the director of the infectious disease unit assuring the public brantly is not contagious. >> dr. brantly has recovered. and that he can return to his
