good morning. monday at 4:00. we're beginning early to continue our coverage of yesterday's earthquake. thank you for joining us. >> i'm e rick thomas. the 6.0 magnitude earthquake there have been a lot of aftershocks, and we're going to take a look at the weather forecast and get some of that information. >> thank you very much. good morning to everybody. welcome to a morning that has a little bit of drizzle out there. watch out for that. not very wide spread pamainly along the coast. any commute all the way from the east bay was pretty quiet. here is a look at the road cam. you can see the entire picture there and the low clouds hanging around. they will slowly fade away today

because of that we're going to be cooler. 78 to 83. 63 to 69 along the coast in san francisco. the rest of us will be around 78 to 77 degrees. >> as we were reporting yesterday, of course, we had did have some of street closures early on after the earthquake hit. those road closures have reopened. this was including i 80 the transition road to 37. the good news they reopened things quite early because the damage wasn't as bad as they thought. any roads that experienced any buckling along highways 121 and 29 are still in use. not a problem there. unfortunately, we have this a pedestrian was hit by a bus. at the intersection of jerry and li lions. we have streets blocked off there. we have more details in a few minutes. >> thank you so much. right now we have the latest development on the 6.0 earthquake. 17 people had to be admitted to

the medical center in napa. most were broken glass. >> 1300 customers are still without power. 33 buildings have been red tagged. the damage makes it unsafe to live in or use. water stations in napa have been set up on pearl street west of main. >> abc 7 news reporters are spread out to bring you the latest now. let's begin with abc 7 news reporter matt keller in downtown napa which saw some of the most severe damage. >> reporter: when you head to downtown napa, you'll see a lot of this. yellow tape blocking off buildings. you'll see a few of these. a red tag right here on the building. that means you can't go inside. a group of 20 to 30 inspectors are heading out this morning to inspect the remaining areas and buildings that haven't been checked. 33 red tags like along with

several yellow tags. the and the most visual damage is downtown. the red means too dangerous to be inside. yellow means you can go in for a limited amount of time. we saw broken windows and the doors that came off the hinges. >> broken glass, bolts, wine, just stuff. >> reporter: and water is another big issue. this was second and franklin street. flooding the courtyard. public works department said 600 homes have their water turned off. they're hoping to have all repairs to the water lines by thursday. some businesses did open up last night including a restaurant. they did run into issues like running out of food, red tags means people cannot go into their buildings. we saw some people out this morning. they're in their buildings and they're awaiting on the inspectors to arrive this

morning. reporting live in downtown napa matt keller. >> this video posted on youtube shows the moment the earthquake struck at 3:20 yesterday morning. security cameras captured the strong jolt on tennessee street. books, papers, other items flying off the walls. what appears to be small pieces of paper or debris flying everywhere. here is a look at the shaking from consumer music. it knocked over some instruments. no word on the total cost of damage. for the most part, injuries from the quake have been minor. a surprise given the size of the quake. a 13-year-old who was hurt when a piece of chimney fell on him was air lifted to another facility in serious condition. another patient is critical. doctors say they do not believe the death of a 30-year-old woman was earthquake-related. nine families set the night

in a shelter sed up by the american red cross. a total of 200 people have registered for assistance. many were unable to cook after the quake knocked out their electric and natural gas. they headed home after getting food. they are offering breakfast starting at 8:00 a.m. >> schools in the district will be closed today. the districts said superintendent said faculty and staff will meet at the school and they will decide by 1:00 p.m., if any, schools will be closed tomorrow. napa valley college is open today. the command center located a the airport took a big hit itself in damage. david louis is live at the airport. >> reporter: good morning from the massive pga command center. they have all kind of mobile command trucks here, satellite

equipped and ground crews ready to pan out. napa airport was damaged yesterday. we'll show you an example. the large glaz window on the control tower shattered leaving froerl and their instruments exposed to the elements. this general aviation airport remaining operating under visual flight rules. pilots communicate on shared frequency. using a see and be seen proto l protocol. replacement glass won't be available for several weeks. they told us the airport is a perfect repair staging area. >> it's going to be most likely unusable until we're able to replace the windows, which involves, you know, getting the manufacturer to install it. >> this is the staging area. we bring together the crews that are getting additional informations about what site they need to report to make

restorati restorations. >> pge are taking care of the gas line and power service. as a major event of the sort, they pulled on resources from all over their service area including the central and northern california area. there are also crews available today from the u.s. agree logical survey they're going to be looking trying to pinpoint the exact location of the fault that triggered the big event. we're live at the napa county airport. >> david, thank you. city crews are still working to repair burst water pipes like this one on white cliff drive in napa. the water flowed into a crack in the street created by the earthquake. on twin oaks drive, some dramatic evidence of the power of the quake. look at that. a cracked street and segments of the sidewalk were propped up against each other. that popped one piece on top top

of the other. >> took a beating from the quake. especially officer's quarters on the old naval base. we are live along captain's row. >> reporter: yeah. there's a lot of damage along this historic street of homes called captain's row. almost all the chimneys have collapsed on these beautiful old mansions. right now eight of the homes are yellow or red tagged until they can be inspected. in the downtown area, the first united methodist church had a wall of bricks that partially collapsed. you can see how they fell from the top of the church. the tower is fine. we're told it was retrobenefited years ago. also on tennessee street there are five stores with shatdered windows and oddly the quake only hit one side of the street. there was almost no damage to the businesses on the other side. but employees at the grocery store on boulevard had cleaning

i appreciate you recognizing that. i think social media did a lot yesterday. there were people talking to us both at times. we were able to tweet a little bit more than you. you had the continuing coverage. we appreciate it. we don't have electric. we don't know what is going on. so being to be get that information out there via twitter or facebook was really a positive aspect of that social media. i know, some people saying self-fulfilling but on a day like yesterday you see the potential of social media. let's talk about quick. 60 degrees. going to warm about to 77 today. won't be too hot for the cleanup efforts there. it's going to be warm in the sunshine. be careful with debris on the ground. temperatures in the upper 50s to well 60s everywhere in the north bay. you you don't see any 50s. mainly to low to mid 60s.

newark at 63. coming into san francisco at 62. san jose 61. let's break down today. going to be a little bit different than yesterday. we're starting off warmer because the cloud cover up to 5 degrees warmer. the sunshine will roll to the coast about an hour slower. we'll have 50s and 60s through the morn hours. clouds vow to open. you can see we're in the mid to low 0u67 by noon. you see the spread development in the afternoon hours as more sunshine. 70s around the bay. 60s on the coast. we'll have low 60s to around 70 with the clouds starting to roll back in from the coast. let's get another check of the morning commute. >> thank you. good morning, everybody. i hope you're having a good morning. of course, we did also experience a mass transit outages yesterday. a lot of trains didn't want to take the chance in case some tracks may have been altered or

destroyed in the earthquake. of course, we have ace train they tweeted out last night. they said everything is going to run as normal yesterday. they did do their maintenance yesterday. everything turns out everything is in working order. bart is on time. we're waiting to hear about capital corridor. we had cancellation of service there as well. we have one incident in san francisco that's right at the intersection of lions and geri we had an unfortunate pedestrian accident there. why don't we take you to the north bay. i want to show you some of the roadways that were affected. it looks like calltran made quick work. downtown napa we'll have street closures because of the destroyed buildings there. intersections of highway 29 and 121. looks like repairs have been made there.

breaking news overnight. app person died after being hit by a bus in san francisco. it happened in the eastbound lanes of jerry boulevard at lions street near the hospital there. police believe the victim was walking in the roadway when the bus hit them just after 1:00 this morning. it aspippears the bus dragged t victim for a short distance. three incidents of looting and burglary following the quake. the city of napa said it's increasing patrols in the downtown area. members of the guardian angels offered protection as well. this is a photograph tweeted by the abc 7 news iteam. it shows the angels standing in front of the napa first united methodist church. >> this is the damage outside that church on fifth and randolph street. pastors and members of the congregation stood outside to make sure that no one beneathed the massive fa said that could giveaway. plaster from the ceiling fell on

to the pews and piano. the building support structure has massive cracks. the organ pipes are scattered in a mess. >> they have a lot of cleanup to do. i'm glad i wasn't sitting at my desk when it took place. >> the church said the most important thing that no one was hurt or killed with all the damage. the napa quake was the first major earthquake in northern california in 5 years. it may be an omen of things to come. it struck more than six miles beneath the earth's surface somewhere between two fault lines hayward rogers and concord green. there's a 10% chance this quake was merely a foreshock bigger quake that could strike within a week. we'll have more on the fault line on the live report at news at 5:00. >> you were following

everything, including i saw the size moe graph you sent. >> yeah. anywhere from -- there was some other ones out there too. that was the further one i saw was in little rock, arkansas. let's give you ab idea of the good news. let me tell you what is going on. here is the napa in case you didn't get to see the epicenter. it's to the southwest of napa aloing the fault. we went from a 54% chance of having a strong aftershock possibly a 5.0 to 45% chance now we're down to about a 35% chance. the longer we go without the big aftershock the likely we're not going to deal with it. here is the shake map. around. th that napa we felt it the

amazing. i live about 45 miles down the sandra mown valley. and it woke me up. we laid in bed and road it out like a lot of people did. then that was it. there you go. so let's talk about just how far away it was felt possibly even toward lake they hoe all the way down and north. very impressive there. so 21,500 responded so far have said they have felt it. and they are sending that information into the usgs. 25 miles per hour wind in fairfield. that's a nice onshore breeeeze. all of us are have clouds this morning. at 3:00 we'll have rough surf or waves along the bay from 3:00 to 9:00. it's mainly the evening hours north of the bay bridge all the way through the delta community. this is the way it looks from

the tower. you can see the cloud cover pretty high. not much drizzle. but it's possible as head a little bit deeper into the forecast that we could see a little bit of that start to make its way down to the ground. let's talk about your forecast. what we're seeing out there high pressure that is developing along the coast. it's pushing the sea breeze in today. you can see an that's why highs will be cooler. we're going to be in the 60s along the coast in the san francisco. upper out of to mid 70s around the bay. we'll have some upper 70s to mid 80s inland. check out the warmth coming back tomorrow and going to feel like summer wednesday, thursday, and friday. >> thank you so much. good morning, everybody. at 4:30 we're trying to keep track of any road closures in napa as a result of the earthquake. it looks like everything reopened. we have one way traffic in

control in effect. highway 121. we're going to find out if any road work will be done this morning for the commute to see if it it gets in your bay. the rest of the bay area is shaping up nicely. if you're taking a drive through san jose, it doesn't matter which way you take, everything is moving fine. if cower coming from the central valley east train is operating. they suspended service yesterday because they wanted to check the tracks and make sure everything was in good working order. 580 westbound it's a breeze. 24 minutes. highway 4 to concord 14 minutes. and southbound 101 to san francisco a 17 minute commute. once you come in over the golden gate bridge it looks like traffic nice and clear. the bridge is cause for concern. everything looks like it is fine. >> thank you so much. it's 4:21. you know looking for the bright spot when there's tough news. here it is. one of the bay area's newest

what started out adds a wfrlg day for two new parents quickly turned frightening after the napa earthquake hit yesterday morning. connie and angel sanchez welcomed their newborn son 45 minutes before the shaking started. the happy couple is grateful that nobody was hurt and they're thankful that the hospital checked in on them right after the quake hit. >> we've seen a lot of buckled streets and damage done to highways, abc 7 news reporter wayne freeman found a spot along

highway 121 where the earth opened up during yesterday's quake and it ran for several hundred yards. you see what he did there. he was unable to touch the bottom. it's believed that the depth of the crack is at least 40 to 50 inches. >> it pays to be prepared for natural disasters. emergency kits should have battery operated radios, flashlights with extra batteries, a three-day supply for food and water for everyone in the family and a manual can opener. plans on posted on our website go to abc 7 news.com. >> would you be prepared if a 6.0 quake hit your home? michael will be live in napa today from 4 to 7:00 answer ing questions. and tips on the hidden safety signs you should look for before going back into a structure following an earthquake. he'll be out there from 4:00 to

7:00 p.m. to answer the questions. they're putting together an earthquake kit is one thing but maintaining it is something else. every few years you have to make sure and the water doesn't last forever either. it has to be replaced. >> batteries all that stuff. you want to refresh the stuff. you probably went to bed about 50 some reports of aftershocks we're up to 144. it goes up-and-down that fault. there we go. we only have about a 35 more than chance of a strong aftershock over the next six days or so. rockies in town to take on the giants as life goes on. dropping down to 60s. look for cloud cover. 74 in tahoe with a thunderstorms. 90 in yosemite. upper 70s around san diego los angeles. rough surf tomorrow. we had closures yesterday because of the earthquake.

a lot of road buckling. we had severe damage in downtown napa that was shutting down street because of the rubble that ended up in the street. s especially main street avoid that and second street. that's where old gold rush era buildings collapsed partially. at the intersection of 29 and 121. we one had one way traffic in effect that looks like it reopened. old sonoma highway. we're getting report of a fatal they. a car is overturned near bear creek road along highway 17. possible lane blockages there. we'll have more information in a couple of minutes. >> thank you. it's 4:27. the shaking and the terror now the clean up and the repair. next at 5:00 live team coverage of what is ahead for the neighborhood hit by a powerful 6.0 quake yesterday. >> we're coming back with another full hour of news.
