took down. right now crews are clearing debris, but the amount is staggering. it could actually take months to move it all out of the way. good evening. i'm dan ashley. let's start with the latest as earthquake recovery efforts move forward in napa. the injury total has now reached 209. a person suffered a head injury and did not go to the hospital until last night. 103 buildings are now red tagged. there are 60 building inspectors at work evaluating so many structures to wine country. 29 of the 30 schools in napa will re-open tomorrow. only stone bridge charter school will remain closed because of possible structural damage. now cornell bernard is live in napa to begin our live team coverage. cornell? >> dan, it is amazing how much

trash has been generated by sunday's quake. this is one of several new public dumpsites in napa that is growing by the hour. meantime, others are just trying to pick up the pieces in their lives and trying to get water back in their homes. finding a plumber, almost impossible. >> try to help each other. >> joe could be the busiest plumber in america. he has had little sleep since the quake fixing broken pipes and water heaters all over napa county. >> he said, russ, i will come out as soon as i can, but we have some people with no water at all right now. i said by all means, take care of them first. >> it is so busy and you feel bad for a lot of people that this need you and you are trying your best to get there. >> across town this mountain of earthquake debris in front of napa high school is being cleared because school reopens on wednesday. people are being detoured to the new dumpsite on the west

side. >> we are dumping off our pool table because the chimney from our roof fell off on to the pull table. >> and the trash is piling up. >> every aftershock they open up wider. >> nancy jordan is principal at jaipt son the -- saint john the baptist school, now yellow tagged because mortar is falling off the building. the nearby church is red tagged due to falling roof tiles. the school is a big mess inside, but she hopes to welcome her schools back next tuesday. >> it is going to be a lot of work, but we believe we will get it safe, and i will tell the kids, it is a remodel. >> we happen to be doing it before back to school. >> surprise. bernard reporting. the city of napa provided an interactive map showing how many buildings were red tagged. you can see they are in the

designated area. we put a map on our website, abc7news.com. emergency repairs forced the closure of highway 29 near the george butler bridge. the chp says the asphalt separated along the bridge's approach. the lane reopened about 5:00 this afternoon. a stretch of road in napa that started sinking is now a full blown sinkhole. this is craigy court. the crews blamed this on a broken watermain that has left neighbors without water since sunday. the quake cracked walls and toppled statues at the house of prayer. the religious retreat and 1920s era money gnaw stare has been closed until a safety inspection is complete. they have a lot of work and they are upset about the damage that was done there. you know, in any natural disaster, victims are targets. and in napa tonight, scammers and unlicensed contractors are

preying on the vulnerable. that's why a warning went out to some of of those living in the hardest hit areas. lisa amin gulezian is where fire destroyed several homes. lisa? >> as you can see the lights are finally back on. that means just about everyone in the park has power, water, gas and phone service restored. and now the inspectors are coming in. tonight the management of the moble home park gave the residents a list of contractors and volunteers who they say are honest and legit. >> some are unscrupulous. perhaps you paid your money up front or they will try to. >> more than a hundred residents of the napa mobile home park packed the hall to find out what to do next. the damage from sunday's quake still lives with them. the quake burst gas lines that likely caused the fires that burned four homes and damaged so many others.

>> i lost everything. a lot of old stuff i couldn't replace. >> these lawn signs went up and the state fraud investigators warned the mostly elderly residents to beware of scammers. most admit trusting anyone is hard right now jie. am i to call my contractor. >> the manager promised to not only give everyone a break on next month's rent, but to be here for them. >> i am here for you guys. i will go the extra mile. i will lose a night's sleep. i will make sure you are taken care of. >> this 82-year-old is feeling overwhelmed by it all. >> i cringe every time i think about it right now. i'm alive. >> amazingly no one was seriously hurt here. 234* napa, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 muse. >> and that's the most important point. the fire was pretty bad. students from uc davis are using the quake as an opportunity to map the fault. the department of earth and

planet terry sciences is mapping the tracks the quake left behind. these are the fissures that opened up south of napa. taking measurements as you can see along with measurements this helps scientists figure out how much the ground moved when the quake struck. good information to have. early warning technology paid off for vallejo firefighters. *9 detection of the first benign shock wave prevented their garage doors from jamming which could have made it impossible from responding quickly. some of the same technology can be used else where. >> the seismic warning system at five vallejo fire systems activated the garage doors three seconds before the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck. >> it is done so the doors don't twist and buckle in the earthquake and we can't get the fire trucks out of the station. >> it was a crucial three seconds for an understaffed

fire department. >> in the first hour the city responded to 350 calls. >> so far 87 homes and buildings in vallejo were damaged. 12 were tagged as unsafe including the first baptist church where they were canceled because of a damaged bell tower. >> i had five offers from churches to help out and we will have service someplace. >> officials are looking at the extent of the damage city wide. governor brown is encouraging the use of seismic warning systems across the state. >> it is in hospitals and it brings elevators to the next floor and locks them so they don't get jammed and people get stuck in them. you can turn off gas mains and turn on anything you want to help start the procedures to save precious resources. >> eventually one system can warn others via the internet adding an extra two seconds ahead of the first shock wave. in vallejo, alan wang, abc7 news. >> more to bring you on the quake. crushed by hundreds of pounds

critically injured in the earthquake is sharing his story for the first time. 13-year-old nicholas dillon was crushed by a pile of bricks when a chimney collapsed in the shaking. one reporter paid a visit to his hospital bed. >> from his hospital bed 13-year-old nick dillon remembers every little detail. >> i couldn't feel my legs and i couldn't feel my back. >> from the minute the earthquake hit his home to the minute he was covered with fireplace bricks. >> i remember crawling. i thought i was paralyzed. >> he was playing video games with his buddy he invited to spend the night. his head is facing the fireplace. >> if i didn't move it would have collapsed on my face.

>> panic took over. >> i felt the first jolt of the earthquake and i saw my friend and yelled his name four times. >> he tried to get out of the way and while crawling bricks crumbled on on top of him. >> i started crawling to get to the door and just as i put my right knee on the floor the chimney collapsed on my back. >> firefighters arrived shortly after, but the minutes felt like hours. once at the hospital he underwent 10 hours of surgery to repair his broken pelvis. >> i have like three plates and two bolts inside of me. >> he won't be able to walk for six months. a physical challenge he is already embracing. >> i will not let it get to me. i am not. >> abc7 news. a drone could be the key to saving a church damaged by the earthquake. they got permission to use this quad copter to shoot damage including at the first united methodist church. they shared the video with the church's pastor and struck

during the evening commute. now bart is single tracking trains a in both directions between those stations. here is what the platforms looked like at the height of the commute around 5 a:30. the -- around 5:30. they were working to figure out what caused the malfunction. three people sadly are dead after a crash on 680 this afternoon. sky 7hd was over the scene in vaw knee shaw where the -- vaw vaw -- vanecia. the sedan hit a canal before it stopped. all three people inside, two men and a woman were killed. san francisco police are looking for two men who robbed a pair of dutch tourists taking pictures of the city's famous lombard street. it happened 11:fiewrt -- 11:45 on sunday night. one man was a lookout and the other robbed them of their camera equipment at gunpoint. they were not hurt at least. well, she has done it again. serial stowaway was arrested

at sky harbor airport in phoenix. here is her new mug shot. airport employees spotted the 62-year-old in the baggage claim area and called police. she did not have a ticket. she had been warned to stay away from sky harbor after trying to get past security there 10 days ago. hartman has tried to sneak on to planes eight times before several times at sfo and one time she managed to do it from san jose to l.a. where she was arrested. the president of mexico wrapped up his two-day visit to california. president enrique penanito spoke about immigration reform. dozens of people protested his visit demanding the release of a u.s. marine held in mexico for bringing weapons across the border. an off duty chp officer is being called a hero for saving a 5-year-old boy. this is miguel alvarez and his family. officer art monteo was as a grocery store when miguel

started choking on a grape. the officer followed his medical training and was able to get miguel to spit it up and start breathing again. if he looks familiar, well it is because he is a chp spokesman who often does interviews with abc7 news. we put him on the air many, many times. the chp says it is proud of the officer and thankful that miguel is okay. good job to the officer. there is a hurricane churning in the pacific that is producing some major surf. those waves are pounding southern california right now. take a look. this is video of the waves off the coast in malibu. lifeguards told people not to go to the beaches. the powerful swells have broken the pylons on the pier there. sandhya patel is watching the surf of in southern california. high waves. >> yeah, 8-10-foot waves and even some sets 11 feet. some of the highest we have seen in recent years. those die hard surfers are not taking the warning, but they

should. look at the number of storm reports in southern california. coastal flooding one report and four reports of high surf. so far we have seen seal beach getting some flooding due to the heavy waves there pounding the coastline and some high surf has shutdown malibu pier has you just mentioned, dan. that is all in association with the hurricane over 700 miles away. it is uh mising. live -- amazing. live doppler 7hd is showing no fog and no clouds and it is absolutely clear across the bay area tonight. here is the view from our emeryville camera. it is going to remain clear until tomorrow morning. we are expecting a little fog. in the 60s from oakland to san jose. here is the view from our exploratorium camera and the financial district is in the clear. low 60s santa rosa and napa. 67 and 66 in livermore.

sutro tower cam showing san francisco and it is sparkling. patchy coastal fog and even warmer on wednesday and thursday. expecting sun and high clouds for the holiday weekend with a slight dip in the temperatures. here is a look at hurricane marie. it has weakened considerably in the last 24 hours. it is a category 1. we will continue to move over the colder waters and it will continue to send the big waves to southern california. the high surf advisory remains in affect until 6:00 p.m. on friday. if you are heading down there, watch out. dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and could see minor coastal flooding and the wave sets are expected to be on the 10 to 15-foot order. tomorrow is when we are expecting the waves to peak. strong rip currents and long shore currents are possible. south facing beaches, sonoma county, san thank you cruz county, watch -- santa cruz county watch out for that swell. mid50s to low 60s. some kids are returning to school tomorrow during the pledge of allegiance they may need a sweatshirt.
