here and firefighters have been protecting a row of homes were flames burned up to the homes the problem is that the grass is very dense, and 7 to 8 feet high in places. it takes a lot of water to douse, and there are no hydrants here, they've been trucking in water. the fire captain tells me this area is a known homeless encampment. >> we make contact with a couple individuals who are exiting. they did say there are homeless still in the camp that couldn't get out. that did not seem to be the case. and it was a negative on this search. >> no official cause of the fire, but they do expect someone in the encampment. so far, no structures have burned and the smoke is not affecting traffic out here. i'm alan wong reporting live in

>> this work is at the top of the to do list for caltrans. what the crews found is a combination of cracks around support braces, sections of rebar, and pieces of the cement support system reduced to piles of rock. caltrans says this is according to plan. >> so in an earthquake, the bridge is made to give a little bit. so it worked the way it's supposed to work. >> this view from sky 7 shows a boat that cell on the side during the quake. other areas of damage were surface levels, extending to maxwell bridge, and beyond. this freshly-patched crack shows you where the road split. >> some of that patch reached

not a lot has been removed because of the scale of things here, the manager of the apartment complex did to tell me these will likely have to stay this way at least a few more days. this man is pointing to the roof of the toyota, still trapped at charter oaks department. in other parts, it isn't as obvious. james martin owns legends and lower gift store the building is structurally sound, but water damage inside is extensive. >> so had a broken sprinkler system. it flooded the back of the store. >> martin hopes to have carpets

replaceed and the store ready to reopen by monday at uptown theater, probably going to take longer. it has been red tagged as unsafe to enter. it's unclear whether it will be ready to host dana carvy next month. the future is cloudy for randy brown his house looks good from the out side, but up close, it's another story. >> brown's 19-year-old house was not completely off it's foundation. >> everybody seems to be in agreement, front third of the house has to come down. and then, the foundation is still in question. >> without earthquake insurance, he doesn't know how much it's going to cost, much less, how he's going to pay for it.

>> a horrendous animal abuse case leaves a family grieving for the death of their dog. police say sparky was beaten during a burglary by two teenagers. >> the brutality of the case is truly disturbing. we're talking about a chihuahua mix. sparky was attacked with a golf club, taken from the garage. 11-year-old sparky has been special to this family. they rescued him at age three and a half. three teenagers broke into the mckenzie home, clubbing sparky,

leaving him for dead for no reason. >> he's been the protector of the house. it's possible that maybe he was trying to defend his home. he's a little dog. i can't even -- at a loss of words. >> two other family dogs were not harmed. police say teenagers broke into several homes but what they did to sparky was unimaginable. police caught up with the two when one resident caught them burglarizing his house. >> my understanding is that one of the children was responsible for killing the dog and according to the police, the other one acted like he didn't realize it. you know? that he had gone upstairs and killed the dog with my golf club, by the way. >> the teenagers have been sent to juvenile hall, one booked for animal cruelty eric mckenzie understands the juvenile system treats teenagers differently but is concerned that the deadly attack on sparky should carry a strong

items from the earthquake that left behind. the valley vitner's association announced launch of a community relive fund. >> we wanted to do something that would be immediate. and help fill that gap until hopefully, other government funding comes through. >> communities coming back from disaster do so with local efforts when they've got funding with locals from within the community. many still trying to tally up logses, fund provides immediate assistance to rebuild. >> people devastated by the quake will be getting something back. oakland raiders hall of famer willie brown presented a check going to the napa valley unified school district and education foundation. it's just part of $50,000 in donations the team made to help in the recovery efforts.
