>> good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. it's 6:00 a.m. on a saturday. so glad you are up and so glad you are with us. let's check in first with meteorologist lisa argen and see how the long labor day weekend is shaping up weather-wise. good morning, lisa. >> good morning. here's doppler 7hd. you can continue to see some stream overhead the next couple hours make not only for pretty sun sets but very nice sunrise and a few low clouds in san francisco. the sutro tower camera temperatures. because we haven't had that many in the way of low clouds forming this morning, we've been mild.

62 in san jose. as the temperatures drop we could get more of an inversion. that you that's now along the central coast. we are reaping the benefits and a milder morning from concord to fairfield. in the north bay it's chilly, in the mid-50s with 4 degrees of cooling for napa, san rafael and santa rosa. the plan for the rest of the day, we will scour out the clouds, making for a sun my and mild afternoon in the beaches. mid-and upper 60s, maybe 70 in some spots and near 90 inland. >> lisa, thank you. >> we start with our ting coverage of the napa earthquake. and this is newly released video from the train yard. you see it hit, and then moments later after the earthquake hits the lights go out. same thing happens across the valley. the wine train did not run sunday and monday while crews check the train cars tracks and trestles to make sure they are safe. they got the all clear to run

the popular tourist attraction again on tuesday. shaken, but not silenced, families gathered for an outdoor concert for friday night fun. it's one of the many ways the community is healing. tiffany wilson has the story. >> like outdoor shows all around the country, families camped out on lawn chairs and blankets. at napa's amphitheater, simply attending the concert made them -- >> napa strong. >> at the first united methodist church, cookies and hot dogs piled high on plates. last sunday should have been their picnic but the earth rattled and the facade suffered severe damage. services resume sunday. >> napa strong! >> downtown this salon suffered major water damage. the owner didn't want her stylists to go without work so she called her contacts in los angeles. >> i rented a trailer. >> napa

>> this business borrowed an oven and sold pizza. >> napa strong. >> every window shattered in this fine art gallery. damage to the art inside even worse. customers turned this piece of cardboard into a love letter. >> it's really overwhelming. >> on "go fund me," offers up financial support. >> napa strong! >> handmade signs do more than tell people stores are open. they she community and they show that we together, we are napa strong. tiffany wilson. abc7 news. a major roadway in napa will be closed to due to quake damage. the 1st street overpass at highway 29 will be closed in both directions from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for pavement repairs to the eastbound approach. the city of vallejo will hold an informational session today for people recovering from sunday's earthquake.

representatives from the solano volunteer organization will be on hand to direct businesses and residents to resource that will help them recover. today's informational session is at the central permit center on santa clara street at 10:00. the usgs said hundreds of sensors on the golden gate bridge and the richmond san rafael bridge did their job during the earthquake. they recorded data about the shaking and how the bridges react today it. the sensors were installed loma prietta so this was the first test. after. >> we received an e-mail asking why the city of napa did not activate the emergency alert system. we brought the question to the emergency manager, and he said i'm play because it's outdated.

usually rivals. the coach said last night's game and a warm welcome is helping players get back to normal. other news now, an off-duty police officer is accused of put on a mask and beating a woman with a baseball bat. he was arrested and is on leave from his patrol duties. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has details from the richmond police headquarters. >> shattered glass marks where richmond investigators say an off-duty walnut creek officer attacked a female driver with a bat. news that officer gregory thompson was arrested is a shock to this man. >> it doesn't seem like its him. it surprised me by him, especially laying a hand on a woman. >> he said thompson's parents used to live in this house next door, and he's been clearing it out to get it ready for sale. the neighbor heard the commotion that night and says richmond police arrived fast. >> just moments later the woman ran up the street yelling that

he had attacked and chased her and the other woman. >> richmond police never found a second victim, but they did find thompson in his car. >> a witness described a male with a mask and a baseball bat walking to that vehicle and they later discovered the mask on the floorboard of the vehicle and the bat in the trunk of the car. >> walnut creek police say tom -- thompson is currently on paid administrative leave while they conduct an internal investigation. richmond police say he posted bond and was released. it's not yet clear why he attacked. a neighbor said it may have something to do with recent vandalism at the house. >> maybe three weeks ago there was a break-in on the side of his house. i guess there was a break-in there. >> by according to richmond investigators, the victim was parked in the street because she ran out of gas and she's never met thompson. in richmond, abc7 news. >> a pilot's extensive experience in the cockpit may have saved his life. yesterday afternoon sky 7hd was over the field in concord with

felix boston of concord said he was forced to put down his plane when the fuel pump stopped working. he said he managed to get over a hill in the area when he realized he wouldn't be able to make it to buchanan field airport. he saw a field nearby and said the key to the save landing was to make sure you don't slow down. >> the most important thing is you keep your airspeed. more people are killed falling out of the sky than landing like i just did. if i would have lost it and stalled it and just hit the ground, then i wouldn't be talking in this conversation now, would i? >> as you can see, boston is just fine. the damage to his plane appears to be minimal, as well. this morning a san jose coach is accused of having sex with a minor. police arrested francisco lopez yesterday. he's a track coach and a campus aid at san jose high school. investigators are not saying where the alleged victim is a student. santa cruz police are looking for a man who robbed a convenience store last week.

the suspect walked into the 7 11 on mission. , on mission and swift just before 3:30 in the morning. police say he asked the clerk for cigarettes, pulled out an automatic handgun and then ran off. >> a teachers tweet is being looked into. she tweeted she wanted to stab some kids and wished two students would get hit by a car. the officials say they want to talk to the teacher at the newark high school and find out what she was thinking. they will present their findings to the district attorney's office to determine if the comments can be considered criminal threats. the teacher said she received a written reprimand from district leaders, but has kept her job. the 49ers will have to play most of the regular season without one of their best defensive players. yesterday nfl commissioner roger goodell suspended aldon smith for nine games. smith violated the league's policy on personal conduct and

>> this is abc7 news. >> #* giants fans had a tough time getting to the ballpark last night. and happening now, northbound 280 between 101 and king street in san francisco, it's closed. last night a major slow-down in traffic for fans coming up the peninsula. it is the route they normally take to get right to at&t park. last night there was a late crowd coming in for the 7:00 game as many fans had to look for a new route. >> going forward i wouldn't take any of my own vehicles or transportation with my own vehicle. i would take public transportation because it's more convenient. i don't want to deal with the parking. >> i use caltrain. that's the best option you can use. >> two more giants games this

holiday weekend so fans are advised to plan accordingly. caltran is on schedule to reopen 280 tuesday morning at 5:00. to help navigate around traffic problems, get waze on your smartphone. you can download it for free on apple's app store or from google play. >> an east bay teenager is happy to be in a jail cell this morning. he spent two weeks in a psyche ward, despite not having mental illness. param sharma was convicted of cell a stolen i-phone, a misdemeanor. he was sentenced to three months in jail. he wound up in santa rosa rita jail lock f, where his lawyer

said someone tried to kill him. the judge said he only sentenced him to jail, not to the psyche ward. the sheriff's office told the attorney the court this to authorize the move and when the lawyer went to the judge this week asking that sharma be move, he got an unpleasant surprise, the case files were missing. >> the judge confirmed on the record on august 27th the file, indeed, has disappeared. >> it wasn't until late yesterday that sharma was moved to a regular jail cell. court staff tells abc7 news the district attorney's office had the files the whole time. >> a california state parks ranger caught taking a nap is now facing dui charges. here's why. the ranger tyson young was spotted parked on the side of the road on humble state park on august 15th. a passerby tried to wake him and noticed a beer can between his legs. the man snapped this picture and called 911, but before police arrived young woke up k drove off. the chp pulled him over. he was arrested and is on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

there was a nightmare for an east bay couple. it happened had their hotel lost their car key, leaving them stranded in yosemite with two small children. michael finney stepped up to help. >> every year this family spends a long weekend here at the lodge in yosemite. >> they have sleigh rides during the snow and a swimming pool. >> amber has been coming here since she was a child. now she and her child are keeping the tradition going with their two small children. >> it's the perfect family place. >> their visit in february was the perfect family trip, that is until the problem at the end. >> we come to check out, and the valet couldn't find our keys. >> the valet had parked the car the night before. now nobody could find the keys and the couple didn't have a spare. >> really we didn't feel a sense of urgency right away. we were kind of like, okay, no problem, easy going. we like being here. >> hours later still no key. the family missed their breakfast reservation at the famous owani hotel. >> as the morning went along, we realized how are we going to go home? >> the day wore on.

the kids grew restless. clothes and toys were locked in the car. >> my one was barely crawling at the time. my two-year-old is rambunctious and she was stir-crazy and i have a five-year-old. >> finally there was a plan. they would get the spare key from their home in newark and fed ex it to the hotel. it would take 7 hours. the family checked back into the room and waited. >> we would take walks, count the stairs as we went up the stairs. touch the snow. >> darkness fell, the key arrived, they drove swiftly home. the hotel promising to reimburse the cost of a new key, which is not simple. it's a digital device costing nearly $500. amanda sent the invoices to the hotel but never got reimbursed. a month later an assistant manager promised the money was on the way. it wasn't. >> that's when i contacted you guys. >> we contacted the lodge and the general manager responded right away. he not only reimbursed the cost of the key, but also refunded their hotel stay and offered another two-night stay for free.

the spokesperson said the manager handling their case had left her job before providing the refund, telling us we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience to the family. wish we had been made aware of the lapse in any communication sooner and hope this they will return as our guests to continue a wonderful family tradition enjoying yosemite. >> that was always our goal, to continue to make memories, take our children to the same spots again, enjoy the facilities. >> i would like to thank the lodge for really making it up to this family. one lesson in all of this, take a spare key when you go on a road trip. it may come in handy. i'm michael finney, 7 on your side. the magic of the mediterranean comes to the peninsula this weekend. the 44th annual belmont greek festival takes place today through monday at the greek orthodox church in belmont. it features greek cuisine, folk music and dancing, a mythology play and a children's area.

exploratorium camera. 6:38 is the official sunrise. dropping off to 53 degrees this morning in santa rosa. much, much cooler there than it is in fairfield with the 64 degrees. 60 in livermore. many of you probably have plans for the beach for the weekend. today about 80 degrees in santa cruz. we will see more 70s from monterey, all the way up through point reyes and looks like ocean beach should see about 66 today. high clouds this morning, thing out, giving way to sunny skies. mild to warm throughout the day today. a couple degrees warmer throughout the weekend, but those winds are going to kick up, as well, for tomorrow. some of the warming offset by the breezy winds. but it's going to be a very nice day today. notice the high clouds. they have made for very nice sunsets and also the sunrise with the low pressure area ting to drift away to the west. as that does, we will see more in the way of sunshine and high pressure builds in tomorrow.

that's what's going to bring the breeze. so early on a few areas of high clouds and then a mostly sunny afternoon. so some of the events around the bay today in milbrae, temperatures in the low 70s here. you will notice starting out in the upper 60s. so a beautiful day. up in sausalito, it should be a little warmer and the sun will be shining. so make sure you have the hat out there. it will be very sunny with mid-70s. the breeze kicks up in the afternoon. it should be breezier on sunday, as well. and slightly warmer on monday for labor day. back to today, in the south bay, 81 in sunnyvale. 87 los gatos with 83 cupertino. 76 san mateo. 65 pacifica. you have sunshine at the beach. 65 in daly city. a nice switch for you. 85 novato, and into our near east bay shores, 75 oakland and 76 in newark. you head inland and we have warm numbers from 89 in livermore. concord just as warm. 90 in walnut creek and 93 in

here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, katie. 6:38 is the official sunrise. still high clouds around. the sutro tower camera showing how nice it is. 63. and san jose checking in at 62. so not much in the way of low clouds. they are along the central coast. we will be looking at a nice afternoon today with temperatures ranging in the mid-80s to low 90s inland. san francisco should be about 70 today. and ocean beach 66. sunny skies. around the bay look for 75 in oakland with low 80s up towards castro valley. pretty much everyone is covered today in sunshine. lightly warmer, slightly breezier. we will detail the rest of the holiday weekend coming up. katie. >> thank you, lisa. new this morning the worst drought in a generation has pushed state lawmakers to overhaul the state's long-standing pump as you please ground water policy. under a ground-breaking package of bills sent to governor brown, the state would again regulating it's ground water supply for the first time.

groundwater has accounted for 60% of the state's water use during the drought, yet it is not as regulated and closely managed as water from reservoirs, rivers and streams. officials say the pumping has been so great in recent years that wells are running dry. lawmakers are sending governor brown a bill that would make california the first to impose a state-wide ban on single-use plastic bags. the bill would prohibit single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and large pharmacies in 2015 and convenience stores in 2016. includes $2 million in loans to help manufacturers shift to producing reusable bags and let grocers charge ten cents each for paper and reusable bags. governor brown has filed an appeal of a court ruling that struck down tenure and other job protections for the state's teachers. california's schools chief

sought the appeal. he was among those named in a lawsuit brought by nine students that argued that california's hiring and firing rules saddled schools with bad teachers who effectivly could not be fired. new this morning, president obama says he's optimistic about the growing economy and decisions made now will determine where the recovery will pick up speed. in his weekly radio and internet address, the president said workers and unions fought for things like social security, medicare, workplace safety laws and the right to organize. he said those fights helped to build a stronger middle class. >> build a stronger middle class in today's changing economy, we have to keep fighting. we have to fight for the right for affordable health insurance for everybody, the right to fair pay, family leave and workplace flexibility. the right to a fair living wage. the president adds 13 states have already done their part to strengthen the middle class by raising the minimum wage. after a long week of picking up the pieces, napa is getting ready for a holiday weekend and

hoping the tourists won't be put off by last sunday's quake. abc7 news reporter rick smith reports from downtown napa. >> you look at the news and you think all of napa valley is like that. it's only in a three-block area. >> he's talking about the damage from the 6.0 quake that hit the region sunday. parts of downtown are a curious attraction for tourists using their cameras to snap images of broken windows and collapsed buildings. places like napa cigars on first street and naked wines will hope folks know their doors haven't closed. to increase foot traffic both are offering deals and holding special events to attract business through the weekend. >> 95% of the wineries are open. >> michael palmer is the general manager of meritage resort and spa. they have three weddings planned for the weekend but some of the other merchants in this wine making region are taking a hit. >> the number one thing can do is not cancel. come and enjoy napa valley because -- >> because it's the most amazing

n.a.s.a. is. yesterday the space agency sent up a plane equipped with a sophisticated radar system on a five-hour data collection mission. n.a.s.a. will compare the date but a data from previous missions and they will be able to tell exactly how much movement there's been on the faults in the area. they also hope to assess the impact of the quake on levies and the delta and to better understand the impact on ground water and the drought. the need for aid is still urgent in napa and here's one way you can help. give where you live. text the word "red cross" to 90999. a $10 donation will appear on your next cell phone bill. san jose continues to have a fire station construction boom. yesterday afternoon city officials broke ground on a new fire station on white road next to lake cunningham. this is video from our alliance with univision 14. it will replace station 21, which is located less than a mile today. the new station will have a community room, more ample sleeping areas and place for

three rigs, and it can be expanded in the future. >> you can add four more bunkrooms. the kitchen can also be expanded, and also the apparatus bay can expand with a larger facility. >> san jose has now built nine new fire stations since 2002 when voters approved a $159 million bond to improve public safety facilities. happening today, the search is on for undiscovered soccer talent. alliance futball, the largest hispanic sports program of any kind will be at the morgan hill sports park today as part of its 11-city tour. scouts from the grass roots organization will be on hand in search for undiscovered talent. plays are will compete for a chance to be invited to mexico for team tryouts as well as scholarships. today's event gets underway at 8:00 a.m. volunteers move quickly to free a humpback whale caught in

fishing line in monterey bay. a whale watching tour first spotted it thursday. they reported what they saw and a team of volunteers authorized by noaa, the national oceanic and atmospheric administration, was there. they tried to free the animal. luckily the humpback was able to free itself before the team arrived. the team volunteers say they pulled an old crab pot bouey and about 200 or 300 feet of line from the water. 30 or 50% of the humpback whale population in the north pacific has entanglement scars. >> this morning the san francisco zoo is celebrating and mourning a rare event. the birth of twin giraffes. san francisco chronicle reports the calves were born tuesday to an 11-year-old giraffe. one weighed in at 75 pounds and one smaller. the smaller calf diet thursday.

>> happening today, the sausalito art festival returns for it's 62nd year. the festival is held every year on labor day weekend. held in marin chip park. it features fine art from more than 200 artists, food, wine and live music. proceeds help support educational art programs in local schools and fund scholarships for college art students. the festival runs until monday and gets underway at 10:00 a.m. each day. sounds beautiful and wonderful. will the weather be like a work of art? >> yes, good one. you know what? it will be very sunny there. temperatures in the mid-70s today. we've had some high clouds early on and that's made for a very pretty sunrise. here in sierra nevada, 46 degrees. in truckee, tahoe valley airport

with big ideas. well, we are about to meet a special entrepreneur. she's only ten and she's helping children all over the world. here's abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian. >> this is where it started. >> this orphanage in the philippines was once home to chris. she was adopted at the age of two. it was during this return visit when chris was six that she saw just how happy the children were when she and her parents brought them cake and ice cream. so she launched the sweets for the holidays campaign. >> i want them to have a lot of happiness on their birthdays and on holidays. >> chris started writing letters and organizing fundraisers. in two months she had enough money to throw a party at another orphanage in the philippines. the idea caught on. here orphans enjoying treats chris brought to africa, china and romania and soon the concern started writing back. >> i want to thank you for your actions so we and all the children from the campus can enjoy our birthdays. >> this year sweets for the holidays became an official

nonprofit. mom is the ceo and deals with logistics so chris can stick with handling fundraising and outreach. >> it's just beyond me what she has started. >> chris is now focusing her efforts on the philippines. she is hoping to build this orphanage. it's a fully functioning orphanage and this is the blueprint for it. she hopes to break ground with she's 13 and have it up and running by the time she's 16. in san jose, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> so incredible. good for her. >> how is the weather. >> some warm temperatures. a few high clouds this morning. but those are certainly going to be few and far between by the time we get into the afternoon. right now still overhead and still making for a pretty sky out there. live doppler 7hd. this is nothing here. we are looking at numbers on the mild side. a bit of low clouds and fog from the sutro tower camera, but not much.

in the mid-60s from here to the airport. 59 gilroy. 57 half moon bay. up in the north bay a mile naviesible with the low clouds from napa. a nice shot from our exploratorium camera. very pretty with 52 in santa rosa. not mild up here. in fact a good 10 to 12 degrees cooler than you are in the east bay with partly cloudy skies. concord and livermore. fairfield at 64 degrees. so definitely wide-ranging numbers with 4 to 6 degrees cooling in the valleys as the cooler air sinks down here. but with less in the way of low clouds and fog. we are milder from fairfield to concord this morning. so as you head out, it should be a fairly pleasant with partly cloudy skies. santa cruz, how about 80 degrees later today? so right now still kind of sleepy out there, in the 50s. more clouds down the road. monterey and salinas with visibility anywhere from a half to a quarter of a mile at the coast. so high clouds giving way to a sunny day today.

even at the beaches it should be very mild. a nice day today. warm inland and it will get slightly warmer through the weekend. but the breeze kicks up at the coast for tomorrow. so we've been talking about marie. it was a mighty hurricane last week. it is fading away. still bringing a few high clouds. the swells coming down along the coast. and the high clouds will be scoured out, drifting away. we will be left with mostly sunny condition and high pressure builds back in over the weekend. those winds could be pretty breezy in the next couple of days. but as for today, partly cloudy in tahoe at 78. western nevada it's a red flag warning. high fire danger here in the higher elevation. very gusty winds in southern california at 85 today. 92 in yosemite. and we've got lots of things going around the day today. it should be very comfortable today over in oakland with mid-70s. 76 at 4:00 this afternoon. just a few high clouds to start out for the pride celebrations at 11:00.

and in pleasanton today, warmer for the scottish hyland games with temperatures starting out in the 70s at 10:00. upper 80s by 2:00. a big difference there. highs ranging from 80 in half moon bay with sunshine to 76 in san mateo. 82 san jose and 87 napa. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. low 90s inland today and tomorrow. a little more fog tomorrow morning. and slightly warmer inland but it will stay breezy around the bay and coast. pleasant over the weekend and then tuesday and wednesday featuring cooler weather with more low clouds and fog and temperatures coming down to where they should be. >> all right. thank you, lisa. in sports this afternoon, cal and stanford kickoff the 2014 college football season. at 12:30 cal plays at northwestern. you can watch the game right here at abc7 at 1:00 p.m. you see davis faces 11th-ranked stanford down on the farm. tonight the a's play the important game of four-game series against the first-place angels in anaheim.

last night jon lester took the mound as oakland tried to rebound from their other loss. here is collin resch with the morning spores. -- morning sports. >> good morning. for a few moments we thought coco crisp made the play of the year for the aids. -- for the a's. by the time we realized he hadn't. we also realized he was injured. a's-angels last night. bottom of the fifth. scoreless game. deep to left center off jon lester. coco tracking, times the leap, crashes into the wall, unable to brace the fall. did he catch it, though? yes, and then no. an amazing effort by coco crisp. he would have to leave with a neck strain. jon lester out after six innings. then in the seventh albert pujols takes him out of the park. a's shutout 4-0. they are now three back of the angels in the west. the pack-man on a tour promoting his november title in china.
