good morning, everyone, thanks for joining us at 8:00 a.m. on this saturday, we're going to start off with a look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> high clouds still drifting over the peninsula and the south bay. temperatures cool in the north bay, low 50s there, mid 60s elsewhere with partly cloudy skies, a look from our exploratorium camera. we're still looking at the high clouds visiting us through the morning hours. 64 in oakland and san jose, with half moon bay at 59 degrees. another shot for you from our east bay hills camera you can see low clouds and fog, but that soon will be giving way to mostly sunny conditions. mid 60s in fairfield. with santa rosa, sunny skies and 57 degrees, so for the afternoon

we'll be looking at low 90s inland, mid 70s east bay. low 80s south bay. we'll talk about particulars and how warm it gets through labor day coming up. thank you, we begin with breaking news out of the east bay -- all lanes of highway 4 in antioch are blocked due to an overturned tractor-trailer. the vehicle overturned just after 7:30 this morning on westbound highway 4, at l street, no word on when lanes will reopen. now to our continuing coverage of the napa earthquake. and this newly released surveillance video from the napa valley wine train commissary and train yard. you can see the train violently shaking when the quake hits. moments later the lights in the yard go out and then you see flashes of light on the horizon as the same thing happens across the valley. the wine train did not run on sunday or monday while crews checked the train cars, tracks and trestles to make sure they were safe. they got the all-clear and started running the popular tourist attraction on tuesday. shaken, but not silenced.

families from across napa gathered at an outdoor concert by old-fashioned friday night fun. one of the many ways the community is healing, abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story. >> like outdoor shows around the country, families camp out on lawn chairs and blankets, only in napa an amphitheater made them -- >> napa strong. >> food piled high on plates, last sunday should have been their church picnic. but the earth rattled and the facade suffered severe damage. >> the real church is standing out here and they're in great shape. >> services sunday. >> napa strong. >> downtown solid salon suffered major water damage. the owner didn't want her stylist to go without work, so she called herw co angeles. >> i'm renting a hair-styling trailer. >> he opened this store two weeks before the quake. the building behind him got

red-tagged. he borrowed an oven and sold pizzas by the side. >> napa strong. >> every window shattered in this art gallery. damage to the sign even worse,ñ customers turned this piece of cardboard into a love letter. >> it's overwhelming. >> on go fund me, offers of financial support. >> napa strong! >> hand-made window signs do more than tell tourists stores are open. they show solidarity, community and illustrate that together we are napa strong. tiffany wilson, abc7 news. a major roadway in napa will be closed today, due to quake damage. the first street overpass at highway 29 will be closed in both directions, from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for pavement repairs to the eastbound approach. the city of vallejo will hold an informational session today for people who recovering from sunday's earthquake. representatives from the solano volunteer organizations active in a disaster will be on hand to

direct residents and businesses to resources that can help them recover. today's session will be held at the central permit center on santa clara street at 10:00. the usgo says hundreds ofñi sensors on the golden gate bridge and the richmond-san rafael bridge did their job during the earthquake. collecting data about the shaking. the sensors were installed after the loma prieta. an abc7 news viewer emailed us after seeing the earthquake coverage on sunday, asking why the city of napa did not activate the emergency elert system or eas. we took the question to city spokesman barry martin. who said simply that the eas is outdated. the city chose to communicate with the public in other, faster ways, nixle, twitter and updating city websites with saturdayer information and phone numbers. >> there are many, many ways to get the word out these days, we're not living in the '50s, we use all of those techniques.

>> if you have a story idea you'd like us to check out, we want to hear it. you oz email us at abc7news.com. the nhl champion los angeles kings are going to use the stanley cup to help raiseñi mon to assist in earthquake recovery efforts. king's general manager lombardi lives in the area and had planned weeks ago to bring the cup to napa to show it off. the team plans to use the cup as a fundraiser. today it will be on display at the napa westin from 5:00 to 8:00. tomorrow you can see it at snoopy's home lights arena in santa rosa. last night the piedmont high school football team honored opposing team, napa's justin siena. a school hit hard by the quake. cheerleaders made a sign welcoming the visitors, who are usually rivals. the coach said last night's game and the warm welcome is helping his players get back toçó norma. other news, an off-duty police officer is accused of putting on a mask and then

beating a woman with a baseball bat. he was arrested and is on leave from his patrol duties. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has details from richmond police headquarters. >>ñi shattered glass marks wher richmond investigators say an off-duty walnut creek police officer attacked a female driver with a bat. news that officer gregory thompson was arrested is a shock to lui spay chow. >> i'm surprised, laying a hand on a woman. >> he said thompson's parents used to live in this house next door. and he's been clearing it out to get it ready for sale. neighbor clarus culver heard the commotion and said richmond police arrived fast. >> just moments later the woman ran up%$e street yelling that he had been attacking, chased her and the other woman. >> richmond police never found a second çvictim. but they did find thompson in his car. >> a witness described a male with a mask. and a baseball bat.

walking to the vehicle and they later discovered the mask on the floorboard of the vehicle and the bat in the trunk of a car. >> walnut creek police say thompson is currently on paid administrative leave while they conduct an investigation. richmond police say he posted bond and was released. it's not clear why he attacked. the neighbor says it may have something to do with recent vandalism at the house. >> maybe three weeks ago there was a break-in on the side of the house. i guess someone threw a brick in there. >> but according to richmond investigators, the victim was parked in the street because she ran out of gas and she never met thompson. in richmond, sergio quintana, abc7 news. a pilot's extensive experience in the cockpit may have saved his life. yesterday afternoon sky 7 hd was over the field in concord, where felix boston of concord says he was forced to put down his plane when the fuel pump stopped working. boston says he managed to get over a hill in the area, when he realized he would not be able to make it to buchanan field

airport. he saw a field nearby and said he knew the key to a safe landing was making sure he didn't slow down. >> well the important thing is to keep your air speed. more people are killed falling out of the sky than landing. like i just did. if i would have lost it and stalled it and just hit the ground, i wouldn't be talking to you right now. >> as you can see, boston is just fine and the damage to his plane appears to be minimal as well. thisçó morning, a san jose coach is accused of having sex with a minor. police arrested francisco vincente lopez yesterday. he's a track coach and campus aide at san jose high school. investigators are not saying whether the alleged victim is a student. santa cruz police are looking for a man who robbed a convenience store last week. the suspect walked into the 7-eleven onñi mission and swift before 3:30 a.m. police say he asked the clerk for cigarettes, pulled out a gun and then ran off.

newark police are looking into a high school teacher's violent and profanity-laced tweets. krista hodges tweeted she wanted to stab some kids and wished that two students would get hit by a car. police say they want to talk to the teacher at newark memorial high school to find out what she was thinking. they'll present their findings to the alameda county district attorney's office to determine if the comments could be considered criminal threats. hodges said she received a written reprimand from district leaders, but have kept her job. the 49ers will have to play most of the regular season without one of their best defensive players. yesterday, nfl commissioner roger goodell suspended all-pro linebacker aldon smith for nine games. smith violated the league's policy on personal conduct and substance abuse. 49ers general manager trent balky said yesterday afternoon the team was prepared for the suspension. 8:09, your labor day holiday weekend gets under way.

on abc7 news. param sharma was convicted of krelg an iphone that wasn't his, a misdemeanor. he was sentenced to three months in zwral. he wound up in block f where his lawyer said someone tried to kill him. the judge said he only sentenced the teen to jail, not the psych word. his lawyer said the court had to authorize the move and when the lawyer went to the judge this week asking sharma be moved, he got an unpleasant surprise, the case files were missing. >> the judge confirmed on the record on august 27th, it was the file had disappeared. >> it wasn't until late yesterday that sharma was moved to a regular jail cell. court staff tells abc7 news that district attorney's office had the file the whole time. a california state parks ranger caught taking a nap is now facibñ d.u.i. charges. here's why -- ranger tyson young was spotted parked on the side of the road in humbolt redwood state park on august 15th. a passer by tried to awaken him

and noticed the beer can between his legs. before police arrived, young woke up and drove off. the chp pulled him over, he was arrested and is on administrative leave pending results of the investigation. >> a road trip with kids can be challenging enough. but for an east bay couple, it became a nightmare, it happened when their hotel lost their car key leaving them stranded in yosemite with their two small children. 7 on your side's michael finney stepped in to help. >> every year, amber leva and her family spend a long weekend here at taniya lodge in yosem e yosemite. >> sleigh rides and a swimming pool. >> she and her husband are keeping the tradition with their two small children. >> it's the perfect family place. >> their visit in february was the perfect family trip. that is, until the problem at the end. >> we come to check out and the

valet couldn't find our keys. >> the valet had parked the car the night before. now nobody could find the keys. and the couple didn't have a spare. >> really, we didn't feel a sense of urgency right away. we were kind of like, okay, no problem. easy going. we like being here. >> hours later -- still no keys. the family missed their breakfast reservation at the famous awahnee hotel. >> we realized how are we going to get home. >> the day wore on, the kids grew restless, toys and clothes were locked in the car. >> my 5-month-old was barely crawling at the time. my 2-year-old is rambunctious and wild and lively. she was very stir crazy. >> they had a plan. amanda's parents would get the spare key from the ñrleva's hom in newark and fedex it to the hotel. >> we would take walks, touching the snow, counting the stairs as we went up the stairs. >> darkness fell, the key arrived, they drove swiftly

home. the hotel promising to reimburse the cost of a new key. which is not simple. it's a digital device costing nearly $500. a man sent the invoice to the hotel. but never got reimbursed. a month later sh, an assistant manager promised the money was on its way, it wasn't. >> that's when they contacted you guys. >> we contacted tanya lodge and the general manager responded right away. he not only reimbursed the cost of the key and refunded their hotel stay. and offered another two-night stay for free. the spokesperson said the manager handling their case had left her job before providing the refund. telling us, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience to the leva family. wiv we had been made aware of the lapse of any communication sooner and hope that they will return as our guests to continue a wonderful family tradition enjoying yosemite. >> that was always our goal. to continue to make memories, take pictures in the same spots again. enjoy the facilities. >> i'd like to thank tanya lodge

sunny skies, half moon bay and mid 60s ocean beach, san francisco 70 today. you're looking at a few clouds right now. but full sunshine later on. 87 in santa rosa and napa. near east bay look for mid 70s from richmond to newark. 77 in union city, and you head inland. look at the red here, the warmth is not going anywhere. we're going to stay in the upper 80s through pleasanton today. low 90s in breastwontwood. tonight if you're headed into the city. it will be dropping to the mid 60s at sun setting at 742 and low 60s by the end of the gay. very little change, a little more fog tonight into tomorrow morning. with the breeze, though, and slightly warmer inland monday. then we cool back, timing is everything with the mid to upper 80s inland by the middle of next week. we'll let you know how warm it'1 going to be on your community by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter. so warm and dry, red flag warning western nevada.

thank you, lisa. this morning, the san francisco zoo is celebrating and mourning a rare event. the birth of twin giraffes. the "san francisco chronicle" q% reports the calfs were born tuesday to an 11-year-old giraffe.5m játçó weighed in at the other, 75 pounds, unfortunately the smaller calf died on thursday. the zoo says twin births are rare for giraffes, with only 32 out of 8600 normal births worldwide. the zoo has yet to name the surviving newborn. which can be seen at the zoo's african region section. a popular item used at many holiday weekend barbeques is being recalled. kraft recalling we'll get to it in a little bit. you're looking at a piano in the park, an idea by one cityñr to bring music into people's lives, we'll be right back.

welcome back, it's 8:30, starting this half hour with a quick look at the ñiweather, here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, we've been watching more low clouds drift over san francisco. we're beginning to see more of this in the way of some fog along the coast. with three to four-mile visibility. elsewhere sunshine andñi warmer. 64 san jose, and 63 in san carlos, 50s up in the north bay. the high clouds on the peninsula. we've goer got another sunny day on the way and kick-starting the labor day weekend.

with numbers this afternoon in the city at about 70. as the[ñ fog burns back to the coast. even the beaches will be sunny. look for low to mid 70s into the east bay. low 80s south bay around san jose. and inland today. upper 80s to low 90s, we've got a bit of a breeze kicking up tomorrow and warmer weather through labor day, inland. we'll detail it coming up. the worst drought in a generation has pushed state lawmakers to overhaul the state's longstanding pump as you please groundwater policy. under a groundbreaking package of bills sent to governor brown, the state would begin regulating its groundwater supply for the first time. groundwater has accounted for 60% of the state's water use during this drought. but it's not as regulated nor closely managed as water from reservoirs, rivers and streams. officials say the pumping has been so great in recent years that wells are running dry. lawmakers are also sending

governor brown a bill to make california the first to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags. the bill would prohibit plastic bags at grocery stores and large pharmacies in 2015 and at convenience stores in 2016. it includes $2 million in loans to help manufacturers shift to producing reusable bags and lets grocers charge 10 cents each for paper and reusable bags. governor brown filed an appeal of a court ruling that struck down tenure and other job protections for the state's teachers. california school chief sought the appeal. among those named in a lawsuit brought by nine students who argued california's hiring and firing rules saddled schools with bad teachers who effectively could not be fired.r new this morning, president obama says he's optimistic about the growing economy and decisions made now will determine whether the recovery will pick up speed. in his weekly radio and internet address, the president says workers and unions fought for

things like social security, medicare, workplace safety laws and the right to organize. and he says, those fights help to build a stronger middle class. >> build a stronger middle class in today's changing economy, we've got to keep fighting. we've got to fight for the right to affordable health insurance for everybody.ñi the right to fair pay, family leave and workplace flexibility. the right to a fair living wage. >> the president adds 13 states have already done their part to strengthen the middle class by raising the minimum wage. after a long week of picking up the pieces, napa is ready for a holiday weekend and hoping tourists won't be put off by last sunday's quake. abc7 news reporter nick smith reports from downtown napa. >> you look at the news and you think all of napa valley is like that, only in a three-block area. talking about the damage from the 6.0 quake that hit the region sunday. parts of downtown are a curious

practices fight songs. >> when we're playing football. we need off the energy of the crowd. >> napa's wide receiver austin aaron and center long snapper and the athletic director aren't only talking about team strategy. today, they're hoping to get the community an opportunity to forget about the pain of last sunday. >> we're a family and these moments, it's really when it comes through. >> a community shaken, but not defeated. in napa, nick smith, abc7 news. çó napa is conducting its ow assessment of the napa earth quake. the space agency sent up a plane equipped with a sophisticated radar system. napa will compare the new information with data from previous missions, and they'll be able to tell how much movement there's been on the faults in the area. they hope to assess the impact of the quakes on the levees in the delta and the impact of the

groundwater on the drought. the need for aid is still urgent in napa. here's how you can give. text the word redcross toçó 909 and a $10 donation will appear on your next cell phone bill. san jose continues to have a fire station construction boom. yesterday afternoon, city officials broke ground on a new fire station on white road. right next to lake cunningham. this is video from our alliance with unavision 14. the station will replace station 21. which is located less than a mile away. the new station will have a community room, more ampleñr sleeping areas, and space for three rigs. plus it can be expanded in the future. >> we can add four more bunk rooms, the kitchen will be expanded. and also the bay will also expand with a larger fire track facility. >> san jose has now built nine new fire stations since 2002. when voters approved a $159

happening today, the sausalito art festival returns for its 62nd year, the festival is held every weekend on labor day. held in marin ship park it features fine art for more than 200 artists, food, wine and live music. proceeds from the event help support educational art programs inñ$sjt(s schools and fund scholarships for college art students. the festival runs until monday, getting under way at 10:00 a.m.

golesian. >> this orphanage in the philippines was once home to krista fala. she was adopted at the ageçó of two. during this return visit when she was six that she saw how happy the children were when she and her parents brought them cake and ice cream. she launched the sweets for the holidays campaign. >> i want them to have a lot of happinessed on their birthdays and on holidays. >> chris started writing letters and organizing fundraisers, in two months, she had enough money to throw a party at another orphanage in the philippines. the idea caught on. here are orphans enjoying treats chris brought in africa, china and romania. and soon the children started writing back. >> i want to thank you for your actions. >> so we and all the children from the campus can enjoy our birthdays. >> this year sweets for the holidays became an official nonprofit. >> mom is a ceo and deals with
