we had to take just a little bit for the kitchen. ranked highest in customer satisfaction. ikea kitchens. live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> this is very meaningful, meaningful for this community in that we're coming back and we're back in business. >> downtown napa is back in business tonight, and they're doing it in style, raising money for the community affected by sunday's earthquake. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. sonoma county has declared a local emergency after last sunday's 6.0 earthquake center new year's day napa. the proclamation clears the way for residents and business owners to seek state and federal emergency funds. officials say sonoma county suffered more than $4.5 million in damages. the quake caused these $362 million in napa county. lots of people are lending a hand to help rebuild tonight in napa. abc 7 news reporter is live in

downtown napa where business is booming and some are the fundraisers. sergio? >> reporter: there are quite a few businesses that are still shut down because entire buildings are still offlimits. you can see that one encircled by a chain-link fence. across the way that building is red tagged. but if you take a look at this square, this corner right here, this building may have wood on its windows. but yesterday they got a green tag. and right now there is a party going on. on the first saturday since the napa earthquake, it was a celebration for naked wines and their customers. >> we're allowed to reopen yesterday. and the first that came to mind is to throw a party. >> reporter: this building was red tagged after the quake, but yesterday an inspector posted a green tag. so they're back in business. loss lots of their stock was damaged and destroyed so now they're having a sale. >> we're selling them at $5 donation minimum. so people are coming in and

restocking their wine cellars. >> the labels may be stained by the wine inside is fine. all proceeds go to the napa valley relief fund. a few blocks away at the westin resort, crews were hard at work there and there was a line of people out the door. >> i can't wait to get up there, give it a kiss and rub it for good luck. >> she is one of the hundreds of people who got to sidle up to the stanley cup. this is an event that had been planned before the quake. but it turned into a reopening for the property. >> we're asking people to donate a minimum of $5 and put into it the cup to get their picture taken. and at the end of the evening, the l.a. kings have agreed to match all donations. >> reporter: the l.a. kings general manager lives in the area. so he offered up the cup to help. westin had to evacuate all their guests last weekend, and only portions of the hotel have reopened. they expect to be fully operational in a few weeks. downtown napa had been experiencing a renaissance in the last few years, and the hopes are to keep that going despite the quake.

in napa, sergio quintana, abc 7 news. one of the biggest tasks people are dealing with now is cleaning up. in an effort to help, free cleaning supplies were given out in the parking lot of a napa bank. so many people turned out, everything was gone by noon. >> from here to see they're getting more supplies. >> building inspectors are still at work, and more than a thousand buildings have been either yellow or red tagged. the good news is cleanup is progressing and the debris drop-off pile is getting smaller. oakland miss say man is in critical condition after he was hit by a patrol car. it happened around 1:30 this afternoon near lake merritt. these pictures were sent by a viewer. police was responding to a call when the officer hit a pedestrian. the officer was driving at a slow speed, but the 58-year-old pedestrian had to be hospitalized. another accident involving a pedestrian is under investigation in san francisco. police say the victim was hit by a big rig around 4:30 at fifth

and folsom streets. you can see the big rig appears to have stopped in the intersection. police say the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. police are looking for a man who exposed himself to a young girl in scots valley. police say the girl was walking near scots valley drive and beans creek road when a man in a truck made noises to get her attention. she turned around and he exposed himself. the truck is described as a smaller two-door dark green toyota truck. firefighters in san jose were busy battling two fires today. they're hoping things slow down this holiday weekend, which has already proven to be a very hot and windy one. lisa amin gulezian has more. >> reporter: the thick black smoke could be seen for miles. on the ground, it was worse. crick was one of two people inside one of the buildings when

the fire started. >> i've never been into a fire like this before where it was huge. there was black smoke. you couldn't even see behind there. it was terrible. >> reporter: two buildings went up in flames. they're used for storing old cars, parts, and tools. the fire started in that far corner and rushed down that direction of the building. at the same time a witness said he saw someone looking pretty suspicious running down the train tracks that way. investigators say they still haven't decided what the cause is. but that doesn't matter to the business owner. >> my body okay. i'm happy. >> reporter: unfortunately, he also didn't have insurance. but just as firefighters got control of one fire, another broke out a few miles away in kelly park off center road. the grass fire burned half an acre. it was a tough fight. and now san jose firefighters will be watched closely. to make sure exhaustion doesn't set in. >> any time you get higher heat, it starts causing problems

there. and when they start getting multiple fires back-to-back, that takes its toll too. those are all the things we're concerned about going into a weekend that looks like it's going to get relatively warm. >> and windy. conditions fa worry fire crews. they don't expect to get a break for another two months. that's when fire season officially ends. in san jose, abc 7 news. one person suffered smoke inhalation and a firefighter had minor injuries in a two-alarm apartment fire on o'farrell street in san francisco. a witness reported the flames on her cell phone. this is video from our sutro tower camera where you can see the the smoke billowing into the air. several people had to be rescued. 12 people were displaced from their homes. the red cross was called to help those people displaced. two wildfires sparked by lightning weeks ago are now threatening hundreds of homes. the fire near happy camp in the klamath national forest began miles apart on august 11. by this morning they had merged into one big fire. in all 90 square miles have

but that means the store that calls the building home now is going out of business. >> not today, not today. >> sears on broadway in oakland's uptown neighborhood is closing tomorrow. they lane partners bought it. they plan to convert the upper stores into office space to attract tech companies. the first floor will likely be rented out to retail shops. dozens of people gathered tonight to raise money for a morgan hill mom with a long road to recovery still ahead. the hawaiian-themed fundraiser in sunnyvale was packed. 33-year-old heidi is a mother of two and wife of a public safety officer. she suffered a brain aneurysm on july 4th. since then she has had several costly surgeries and is now in speech and physical therapy in san jose hospital. heidi's mom says her daughter was overwhelmed when she learned about all the support from her community. >> we discover that she can read now. she was coming through on her

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening. i'm ama daetz. in tonight's headlines, a man is in critical condition after he was hit by a patrol car in oakland. it happened around 1:30 this afternoon near lake merritt. police say an officer was responding to a call when the opd officer hit a pedestrian. investigators say the officer was driving at a slow speed. a two-alarm fire destroyed two commercial buildings in san jose. it broke out on north 7th and quickly grew. the buildings were used to store old cars, parts and tools. no one was hurt. sonoma county has declared a local emergency after last sunday's 6.0 earthquake centered near napa. meantime, downtown napa marks the first saturday after the quake. some businesses donated their proceeds to disaster relief and hockey fans put their donations in the visiting stanley cup.

one-week ultimatum to scale back its intervention in ukraine or face more sanctions. the european leaders today warned russia it risked being isolated if it continued to escalate the crisis in ukraine. nato estimates these a thousand russian soldiers are in ukraine. russia denies it. a plane crashed into the atlantic ocean today after the pilot lost consciousness. the small plane took off from an airplane in wisconsin, heading to virginia. the pilot stopped responding to radio calls around 1:00. because the plane was so close to washington, d.c., f-16 fighter jets were scrambled to escort the plane. the jets confirmed the pilot was unconscious and stayed alongside until the plane crashed into the ocean. the worst drought in a generation has pushed state lawmakers to overhaul the state's long-standing pump as you please groundwater policy. under a package of bills sent to governor brown this week, the state would begin regulating groundwater for the first time. groundwater has accounted for 60% of the state's water use during the drought. but it's not as regulated or

managed as water from reservoirs, rivers, and streams. several other bills were passed by the legislature before the session ended this morning. one would make california the first state to temporarily take guns away from a person who is at risk of becoming violent. lawmakers have been focused on ethics after three senators, including leland ye were arrested on federal charges. one bill passed is how elected officials could spend cash for personal expenses. and another bill would make california the first state to ban plastic grocery bags statewide. the governor has until the end of september to sign or veto the bills. the als ice bucket challenge has raked in buckets of donation. $94 million and counting. our own dan ashley, sandhya patel, alan wang and i myself got drenched, and we made donations to the als association. so many donations made. they're 34 times higher than this time last year. reporter elizabeth cohen shows

us why this fundraiser has been so successful. >> reporter: superman and lois lane got doused. so did matt damon and martha stewart. this guy did it in an airplane, upside down. in just one month, the ice bucket challenge has generated $100 million. as over friday, the als association says donations are up an astonishing 3,504% from the same time period last year. and while you can say that's #amazing, there is a worrying that these dunkers' expectations might be disappointed because even with all this money, a cure for als is still a long way off. >> progress against these really tough issues takes patience, and it takes time. but we're not going to see results overnight, and nobody should expect that. >> reporter: sylvia buchanan is president for the center for effective policy. he says whether it's an

earthquake in haiti or an attack on the homeland, donors often want to see quick results and they want to know where their money is going right away. >> there will be a temptation to give it all away quickly, but it might be wiser to be more deliberate, see what shows evidence of success, and then and only then fund that in a bigger way. >> reporter: the als association doesn't have a breakdown yet of how all the ice bucket money will be spent and they acknowledge spending pressures this week saying this isn't a matter of spending these dollars quickly, it's a matter of investing these dollars prudently to achieve maximum impact in our quest to help people living with the disease and those yet to be diagnosed. and while a cure might not come overnight, at least for now, more and more money is. with ice bucket challenge donations now averaging a $9 million per day. >> charity als, yay, donate. >> reporter: elizabeth cohen reporting.
