that breaking news is in san francisco. flames ripped through a commercial building in the city's mission district in afternoon. it burned like this for hours. large plumes of smoke could be seen as far away as the east bay. residents near the area were evacuations the fire still smoldering, there are still a few hotspots. good afternoon, everyone.

>> the fire started inside a retail store on mission street between 22nd and 23rd streets. at least four people were treated for smoke inhalation. katie marzullo is live at the scene. >> the smell of smoke still very strong out here. it's that building with the yellow facade, can you see the hole in the middle, firefighters blew that open with their hoses to try to get fire on scene. >> sky 7 hd was overhead when this fire was raging this afternoon, can you see the dark heavy smoke and flames at times too. the fire erupted at 1:00, just after 1uk :00, it got big very quickly. the top two floors were all storage and there was so much stuff in there they could not get into those areas, they pulled everyone out and then they were able to breakthrough

some windows that had bars on them, and that's when flames shot through the roof. the heavy fire load creating a lot of smoke that is a toxic level out here. >> people shouldn't be standing around here if they don't have to be, but it's all because of that heavy fire load that's burning inside there. >> people who live on bartlett street which is parallel to mission and just behind the store that was on fire, found themselves smoked out, the fire department says no one was officially evacuated, they had crews on bartlett, the homes not directly composed to fire. firefighters were in his backyard fighting the fire. >> this morning someone said fire, fire, i said, where is it? we looked out back and there was all this smoke. we could hear the fire engines coming. it was a relief they were going

to be here soon. i was like, come back to the backyard. >> we know there have been injuries out here, at least two firefighters and two civilians. some of whom were treated on the scene, others taken to the hospital. some incredible news. good news, but almost hard to believe, the fire was contained just to the one store. the stores on either side did not have any fire exposure here. one ember caught an awning on fire. i talked with other shop owners on the side of the street, that fear their merchandise is lost, just because of the smoke damage. also here on the scene, we know from pg&e, they did have to shut off gas and power, to basically this entire area to ensure everyo everyone's safety about. >> thank you, we have a couple photos from the ground. this is the view of the smoke at

mission and 22nd street. another angle here, moving closer to the scene. you can see the fire trucks there as crews work to protect "buildings in the area. >> a lot of people coming in on 101, you could smell the fire. >> the wind has been carrying the smoke across a wide area. winds are pretty steady mainly out of the northwest about 10 to 20 miles an hour in most locations. let's get down to the fire, windses are steadily out of the west-northwest right now at 8 miles an hour, gusting to 22 miles an hour, the gusts have increased a bit over the next hour or so. quick look at smoke levels, they were declining steadily during the late morning hours, they rose sharply between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., up to 29 micro grams per cubic meter, that's not a

live over breaking news in san francisco, crews are still battling a fire in the mission district. it's smoldering at this point. you see the smoke, now we're moving a little bit. you see the firefighters still there, at least four people, two firefighters and two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation. muny lines are being rerouted. we'll bring you any new developments during this newscast, you can get breaking news updates hon twitter any time. >> a memorial is growing in honor of a 14-year-old san francisco boy killed at a corner store earlier this week. >> police have arrested a 14-year-old in the stabbing death of orshon williams. the principle of sacred heart talked about how his classmates are coping. >> as students headed into class this morning. the principles described the

move. >> somber, resilient. you know, we talk about cherishing one another, how the tragic, the unexpected helps us look at our priorities. a memorial to him now decorates the sidewalk. the police have arrested a 14-year-old former classmate. the two went to middle school together in the mission. he has been threatened over social media. >> he has friends from kindergarten to eighth grade. >> reporter: the school will be checking in with his teachers today. >> it's my intention with our director of human resources, and others, together the teachers together who had him in class. to make sure we're supporting

a group of world war ii veterans will take off early tomorrow, they're going on a whirlwind visit to the memorial in washington, d.c.. luke sunday is one of those veterans boarding the honor flight, sunday was a navy core man and served in the south pacific. after the war, he spent almost 30 years living in nepal, working at a medical clinic, he never thought he would see the memorial. >> it will be a pleasure to -- just the fact that we're able to come and see our friends our comrades, that we knew so many of, and were so close to for so many years. who have gone. >> freemont firefighters raised more than $30,000 needed to celebrate a group of veterans to d.c. for the weekend. what a wonderful gesture by them. >> let's go to spencer

christian. >> we have lots of low clouds around. here's live doppler 7 hd. reaching locally out over parts of the bay right now. it's a bit overcast, but not dreary looking, these are our forecast pictures. clouds and fog becoming more extensive overnight. spotty drizzle is possible in the overnight hours. we'll see mild to warm days into next week. let's talk about -- we'll give you a little el nino update. the warming of the waters in the basket which can have a look at our winter weather. minor areas of the surface waters there. this week we see a few more areas of some warming on the surface waters. and here's what could happen. the ocean temps are higher than they were a month ago. a weak el nino condition is likely this fall and winter, and the impact on the california

drought, looks like a weak el nino developing, not a strong one. if it's a strong one, it could have a great impact on our weather. how about this, look at the tropical pacific, we have hurricane norbert lashing the cabo san lucas area right now. it's a hurricane one category hurricane. gusts to 115 miles an hour, the center is 130 miles south-southwest of baja, california. the movement will be northwest ward away from land areas, it could impact southern california weather by producing some rain and perhaps even some flash flooding in the southernmost part of the state. and for the bay area, the affect it could have is it produced the beach hazard already monday. waves at 4 to 8 minutes, dangerous swimming conditions. a risk of rip currents. bear that in mind. meanwhile, back to our overnight weather, we'll see extensive fog and low clouds.

we go back to our breaking news, look at the flames, we've been following this all afternoon, firefighters on the scene of a five alarm fire of the san francisco's mission district. you can see the intense flames that were a little bit earlier from sky 7 hd. the fire began just after 1:00, at a two story commercial building on mission street, between 22nd and 23rd streets was closed down. homes and businesses in the area were also evacuated.

more than 100 firefighters were on the scene. that blaze that burned for about three hours this afternoon, at least two firefighters and civilians have been injured, three of them were treated for smoke inhalation. >> we have a live look at the scene right now, there's still some smoldering there, and a massive firefighting presence in that area. we're told by the fire chief that the business where this fire started has been cited twice in 2009 and 2013 for overcrowded conditions and narrow exit roots. we know that one of the businesses located in this building was big house incorporated, at 2632 mission, they sold toys, luggage, towels. a lot of highly combustible materials that all went up. initially the firefighters went inside to try to battle this blaze, it got too hot. the heat was too much for them. they had to go outside, they started to attack it from above.

but he cancelled a concert in southern california last week. lieutenant pittman suspects the 1.5 million dollar reward for his arrest contributed to the cancellation. >> there are charges being placed against him for kidnapping, false imprisonment, brandishing a firearm, being accused of conducting this criminal activity as a member of a gang. >> mitchy slick grew up in san diego and is rumored to be a member of the lincoln park bloods. he's collaborated with bay area musicians and posted videos of himself in oakland. officials are not releasing any information about the woman allegedly held against her will out of concern for her safety. tuesday mitchy slick turned himself in to marin county jail, and the district attorney's office decided they need more time to investigate. neighbors who called police about activity at his home, just want the chain of fancy cars and trail of women to stop. >> we have kids here and want to make sure that we're all safe.

federal corruption trial of bob mcconnell and his wife. the jury convicted mcdonnell on 11 of 13 charges while finding his wife maureen guilty on 9 of 13 counts. they boughed their heads and wept as a chorus of guilty verdicts were read. he was charged with doing favors for a wealthy vitamin executive in exchange for gifts and loans totaling $177,000. mcdonnell was widely considered a possible running mate for mitt romney in 2012. a georgia father whose 22-month-old son died after he was left in a hot car for seven hours has been charged in that toddler's death. today a grand jury indicted justin harris on murder and child cruelty charges, he's been in jail since june 18th, that is the day his son died. harris has told police he was supposed to drive his son to day care that day, he drove to work instead without realizing his son was still in the car seat in the back of the vehicle.

police say harris was in his office sexting with several women the day his son died. the u.s. attorney general announced a civil rights investigation, into enforcement practices by police in ferguson, missouri, this follows the shooting death of michael brown. brandy hitt has more. >> reporter: michael brown was shot and killed one month ago by ferguson police. >> we need to turn our pain into power. >> reporter: eric holder says the justice department is launching a civil rights investigation into the police department after speaking with residents. >> i heard from them directly about the deep mistrust that has taken hold between law enforcement officials and members of that community. >> reporter: darren wilson shot brown six times after a scuffle, setting off two weeks of violent clashes. this broad federal probe will

we're talking about 43 socks. this is an x-ray taken of the stomach of a 3-year-old great dane in oregon who devoured 43 age a half socks. as you might imagine he got quite sick and his family took him to the vet. a portland vet had to surgically remove the socks. >> we do remove items of clothing from dogs. but this was something. >> that dog is now fine, by the way, the clinic submitted the x-rays to an annual veterinary they ate what contest? and it won third prize.

breaking news in san francisco, fire crews are mopping up after battling a massive building fire on mission street between 22nd and 23rd streets, it's still smoldering, you can see white smoke coming up off the roof, at least four people, two firefighters and two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation. the fire was apparently contained to that building. we will have live team coverage coming up at 5:00, and get breaking news updates on abc 7 news bay area. an albino kobe bra that attacked a dog is no longer slithering the streets. the snake was caught not far from where it bit this dog. the dog is fine, the snake is called a white monday ago elled cob cobra, illegal to own in california. also a permit is required for that snake. officials believe the highly venomous snake got away from its owner, nobody has come forward

still a very real threat that it could reignite. take a look at this video, our photographer was on the ground and closer than anyone else as this fire was really at its peak. so much fire, and water that there is now a danger of collapse on top of the danger of things reigniting. city inspectors ultimately will have to decide if they tear this building down, the chief of the fire department thinks they will have to do that. the fire erupted after 1:00 this afternoon, inside a 3 story building, we understand they had everything inside there from clothes to toys and trinkets, that kind of stuff, the people inside got out by themselves, firefighters didn't have to do any rescues. they tried to battle these flames which were massive, the reason for so much fire and possibly for hindering the firefight, the amount of merchandise inside the store and also in storage, the entire top floor of the store was storage. and the
