store that caught fire. at one point, this tree was on fire and hillary thought for sure she'd lose her home. a neighbor felt the same way. >> i just feel so fortunate. i felt fortunate that the firefighters were able to keep the fire from getting to us. >> reporter: fire hoses still snake through the garden and firefighters remain on scene. jessica thompson doesn't live here. she happens to be cat sitting for her friend that's on vacation. she came running when she heard about the fire. >> i didn't have the key on me. it was just a matter of the firefighters said it wasn't smokey, but i hadn't seen the cat. until i see they are alive, i'm nervous. >> reporter: a lot of people on bartlett were nervous with flames so close to home. they didn't think they would have to stay away. >> we did not stay here last night. i have asthma and a toddler. i did not want him breathing the smoke. we're not going to stay here tonight either.

i just came out here today to open the windows and air the place out. >> reporter: she says she might not stay for a couple of nights. now meanwhile the business is actually here on mission street with only a few exceptions that are open as if nothing happened. i'll have the stories for you coming up at 6:00. live in san francisco, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> we'll see you then. happening now, a large protest is underway right now in downtown oakland against the militarization of the police. more than 250 people have gathered outside the open convention center. they are upset about urban shield. that's a four-day conference going on inside the convention center. it features training exercises and the latest in police equipment. that includes armored vehicles and military grade weapons. >> the sorts of equipment that may be needed to fight a war in another country, but it's

counterproductive for creating safe environments in a city like oakland. >> the sheriffs department is hosting the event and says police need to be prepared for the worst. >> it's a shame that the law enforcement has to do this. it's a shame we have to wear bullet proof vests every day. that shouldn't happen. i don't think there's anybody that says we shouldn't go out with them. >> at least two mayoral candidates say they would prohibit oakland from hosting urban shield in the future. an unlicensed contractor who has been ripping off customers since 2004 was sentenced today to two years in state prison and ordered to pay $26,000 in restitution. it's a case that michael finney has been following for six years. some of the victims were on hand today to see justice served. >> reporter: work had to be redone after the project was abandoned. she saw him face to face in

court. >> he looked at me for a long time. >> they didn't complete the work that's supposed to be completed. >> reporter: we first reported on wilson in 2008 when nearly a dozen people filed complaints against him. he was e eventually arrested and sentenced to eight months in prison and ordered to pay $23,000 in restitution. he served his time but repeated the crime after his release. joe narone prosecuted the second case. >> he's a repeat offender. he goes in without a license and does a lot of damage to people's houses and makes them feel victimized. >> reporter: wilson has been on the contractor state license board most wanted list since 2012. authorities finally caught up with him this year. an attorney was asked by a minister to defend wilson. he's confident wilson will repay victims. >> i didn't get into this

business just because i want to be a lawyer. i did it because i'm trying to help my community. part of it is having my clients that are responsible to hold up their part of what we call restorative justice. >>. gloria is skeptical she will get her money back, but happy nonetheless. >> i'm satisfy ied because he wl serve time. >> wilson was ordered to serve five years probation after he gets out of prison. he will appear in court in november to update the court on the progress he's made paying his restitution. a special honor today for a california highway patrolman killed in the line of duty. officer kenyan youngstrum was shot and killed two years ago today during a traffic stop on interstate 680. today the chp renamed the 680/24 interchange in walnut creek after the officer it's the highest honor an officer can receive. his widow and three of his four

children attended the dedication ceremony held not far from the freeway. >> it's kind of surreal to know that, but at the same time, we appreciate it because we know he will never be forgotten. >> he will not. chp officials attending the event applauded his courage and dedication. his life and service will always be remembered. cal state says it is investigating a data breach that compromised the personal information of 6,000 people. they said the server was hacked on august 23rd and files and names were downloaded. if your information was compromised, you will be getting a letter from the school which will provide free credit monitoring service. news that a chinese tech company is expected to have a record first public offering. the company filed documents to price its stock between $60 and $66 a share.

that would raise the tech ipo record. yahoo! owns a quarter of the company. they will sell 121 million shares for $7.5 billion. the 49ers are kicking off the 2014 season in dallas this sunday, and when they do, defensive tackle ray mcdonald will take the field with the rest of his team. mcdonald was arrested last weekend on suspicion of domestic abuse involving his pregnant fiance. he's not been charged with a crime. the 49ers and nfl have both said there will be severe consequences for anyone involved in domestic violence, but also stressed he's entitled to due process so he will be allowed to play. the 49ers have installed new turf again. it's designed to last the rest of the season. the true test will be at tomorrow's soccer match between mexico and chily. lillian kim joins us with the

latest. >> reporter: the 49ers have made a few tweaks and say they are confident they got it right this time. sky 7 was overhead when team mexico wrapped up soccer practice. they are the first to test out the new turf installed last weekend. some of the seams are visible. the goal keeper for team mexico talks about the field. >> it's a little hard. it's not that bad. it's supposed to be a a little softer to get a better feel in the ball and the game. >> reporter: mexico will be playing against chile. >> i'm just going to see how they make their cuts. the soccer players, if they create difts or not and stuff like that. if they are falling down or not. >> reporter: the turf of began falling apart after the preseason game. the field was ripped out and replaced with temporary sod. the team says the problem was

the sand base underneath the grass. the field is now in its third incarnation. the team adjusted the composition of the base and switched to a different type of grass for the bermuda grass to the same kind that was used at candlestick. fans are keeping their fingers crossed. >> you don't want to have something where a knee blows out and it being costly to your t m team's welfare. also mostly just for the integrity of having the new inaugural season for the levi stadium not be marred by injuries. i don't want it to develop a bad rep. >> reporter: an organization hoping to put the turf saga behind them. lillian kim, abc 7 news. >> one more sports note. former coach of the oakland a's has resigned as manager of the texas rangers. he says he needs to devote his full attention to an off the field personal matter.

even with holes in the walls and books spilled out on the

floor, schools demonstrated how safe they are during an earthquake. public schools in california have to adhere to seismic codes but not private schools. san francisco wants to change that. the cost for some would be huge. lyanne melendez is live to explain what's at stake here. >> reporter: this public school building is perhaps one of the safest buildings if there were to be an earthquake. now the city of san francisco is not sure it can say that about all private schools and it's important that they know because in san francisco 24,000 students attend private schools. that's one-third of all students in the city. here's a public school recently upgraded. a concrete wall has been attached to the bricks. and cross bracing helped reenforce the building structure. >> i'm confident that in an earthquake life safety, which is what earthquake codes are all about, we would fair very well. >> reporter: but private schools have not been required to undergo any kind of seismic

retrofitings. some have done so voluntarily. >> of course, we have children at these schools. we want it to be safe. >> reporter: for some private schools, it would represent a financial burden. that's why the private schools earthquake safety working group decided it would be better to have the buildings undergo seismic evaluations instead of forcing them to e retrofit. >> we're not going to mandate retrofit, but we're going to mandate that people understand the risks. >> reporter: schools would have to undergo the evaluations within the next three years. city officials believe if a private school performs poorly, the school and its community would want to go through the retrofitting process. and the message from the city is we'll work with you. >> so they can loork at capital plaping process and say this is a 5-year fix or a 15-year fix. it's the parents and community that could come up with4eplan.i >> reporter: most of the private school sectors say they will

find a way to make it work,ç it's the communities that we're concerned about that aren't going to be able to do that. >> reporter: lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> research shows california's blue whale population has rebounded to levels not seen in decades. they are the largest animal on earth, but also endangered. university of washington researchers say the population in california is the first to return to the level that existed before the species was nearly wiped out by whaling. there are 2,200 of the creatures on this side of the pacific. we have seen so many consequences of the california drought this summer. brown grass, thirsty crops and historic towns are resurfacing. one old settlement is now attracting unwanted attention as

new -- east of stockton is where this is happening. tim daley has the story. >> reporter: these are pieces of foundations from the town and the business that was here, but we're not the only ones to visit these spots recently. >> medal detectors or digging, we have had some of that going on. that's mainly what we're try ing to prevent. >> reporter: people who think these pieces of metal are valuable or who think there might still be gold in these hills have been digging where the town used to be. these old photos give an idea what the place used to be before it was turned into a huge lake in the '70s. the bureau of reclamation is reminding visitors it's not legal to remove or disturb any artifacts just because that ground might now be reachable. >> it's a piece of history. it's also protected by law. so any cultural resources or

a red flag warning for the so-called happy campfire was extended until 11:00 tonight. the fire has burned 120 square miles. no structures have been burned though. a mandatory evacuation order has been lifted. the fire was started by lightning on august 11th. it's now 19% contained and the cost is $50 million. you want to be clear about that. this fire certainly creating problems in the north bay. meteorologist. >> as you look behind me, visibility looks terrific. in the north bay, i just got off the phone with the public information officer for the bay area air quality management district. the ozone levels are going up, which is why a smoke advisory has been issued. i'll show you those fires from the satellite perspective. right now fog lingering across parts of the coastline there from point raies down to the

golden gate. most areas enjoyed the sun today. take a look at this image. the smoke plume from the fires drifting in our direction. that's why there's a concern. a smoke advisory is in effect. as far as the timing, i was told it's going to be up to what the levels are looking like. there's not been a time issued as far as how long this is going to be in effect. stay inside and avoid the outdoor air if you are particularly sensitive. we're looking across the bay, you can see the marine layer there. temperatures right now 66 in san francisco. 70 s for oakland. beautiful view from our lake tahoe camera. nothing but sunshine. expect sunny skies, low 80s. morning lows will be in the 40s. temperatures right now in the northern bay. low to mid-70s. 81 in livermore. and from our east bay hills camera, a gorgeous view looking

at the low clouds as we'll be seeing that overnight tonight. mild to warm days expected with slightly cooler weather early next week. today's highs have range the 60s to the 80s. if you like the weather, chances are you're going to love the weekend. we're not expecting a lot of change change. a mild to warm weekend on tap. low clouds and fog and some instances along the coast lingering into the afternoon. watching hurricane norbert. it it has strengthened to a category 2 now. winds of 100 miles per hour. it's moving to the northwest at 60 miles per hour. it is expected to weaken, but it will continue to bring rain to the baja, california, area and san diego, southern california, the southeastern portion of the state looking at rainfall, possibly thunderstorms going into the weekend. then that system will fall apart. if you're traveling there, hurricane norbert along with the swell generated near new
