nah, i'm still sad about the popcorn. live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> by air and on the ground, police are searching for a missing 6-year-old boy in san jose. he's autistic and can't talk, making the search that much more desperate. good evening. hours after the sun goes down, a little boy is still missing in san jose. this is 6-year-old sergio zepeda. in addition to searching for him, san jose police are talking to his mother and her boyfriend. alyssa, you spoke with them, as well. >> reporter: i did. and they were very worried, especially as it kept getting later and later in the day.

sergio has been missing from his home for 14 hours. and the search does continue into the night. in fact, search and rescue teams were just called back to the staging area. they're heading back up the hill to look. there's also the flyers have been printed. search dogs, a helicopter and a community looking for this little boy. 6-year-old sergio zepeda was last seen at his house on san jose's rorty drive. he was watching tv and jumping around. when they started to cook breakfast, he was gone. >> everybody's worried. it's like, too much time. >> i don't know where he is. i wish i would know. >> reporter: sergio's mom and her boyfriend have been talking to investigators all day. that's why they're in a police car. but they're not considered suspects. and police say there's no reason to believe foul play was involved. they think sergio got out of the house, through the garage door. >> we put a latch on the door. and that way, he don't go into

the garage. but he open it. >> he figured out how to open it. >> reporter: sergio is autistic and does not communicate verbally. he may only be wearing a diaper, no shirt or pants. police and search rescue teams are scouring a three-mile radius around his home. >> there's a quarry. creeks. >> reporter: family members gathered together. some in tears. a few neighbors showed up to help look. >> it's an opportunity to try to give back to the community and help. to find a child. i asked them, what would you do? where would you go? >> reporter: a helicopter kept watch overhead, even as it got dark. police say sergio has been known to run off and hide. they're asking the public to keep an eye out and to call them if you think you see him. >> police in oakland are looking for a hit-and-run driver who injured a toddler. just after 11:00 this morning,

officers responded to 35th and international avenue on a report that a 1-year-old or 2-year-old child had been hit by a car. the driver did not stop. the child reportedly has minor injuries. police have not released a description of the driver or the car. emergency crews had to rescue three family members tonight after high tide trapped them on the rocks in half moon day. cal fire says it happened about a mile and a half south of the ritz carlton hotel around 6:45 tonight. once crews located the man, woman and 8-year-old child, a rescue boat from the san mateo county harbor master was on to the scene. they were not hurt. a chp helicopter assisted in the rescue. new at 11:00, a family of a half moon bay woman shot and killed by a deputy this summer, is protesting the district attorney's decision not to press charges against the deputy. this group of family and friends demonstrated today in half moon

day. she was shot and killed on the night of june 3rd. she was developmentally disabled and refused to take her medication. they called 911 when she grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened her parents. >> i don't know if it was negligence from the officer, negligence from the 911 dispatcher, but this shouldn't have happened. it could have been handle -- he could have handled the situation in a different way. >> the district attorney's report says she charged at the deputy with a knife. the family plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the county. one person is dead after a bizarre early morning crash on highway 101 in san jose. a green honda lost control just before 2:00 and crashed into the retaining wall. two women got out of the car and were standing by the vehicle, when another car slammed into theirs. the impact was so hard, one of the women fell over the retaining wall on to the king

road off-ramp. according to the chp, drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. police are looking for a man accused of causing a wreck that ended with a bus crashing into a richmond home. police say 24-year-old richard contreras was driving a stolen vehicle that collided with a transit bus. the bus slammed into a house, narrowly missing a 3-month-old baby in the living room. eight people on the bus, including the driver, had minor injuries. police caught a juvenile who was a passenger in the car. but the driver, the passenger's older brother, ran away from the scene. tonight was the first-ever international soccer game at the new levi stadium in santa clara. we go live outside levi stadium with more. and, lisa, good times inside. but how about outside? people unhappy with the driving and the parking? >> reporter: yeah, very true. there are a lot of unhappy people right now. we are at the yellow lot.

it took us an hour to get here, after we exited 101. and that was two hours before the game. and take a look at the traffic. it is kind of stop and go right now. right now, it's a good stretch. as you can see, they are stopped. now, this is what it looked like once the game ended around 9:00. it was gridlocked. but soccer fans heading to 101 will hit more traffic since the keith urban concert is letting out around now from shoreline. just about everyone was excited to watch tonight's match-up. soccer fans couldn't wait to get into the new levi stadium. they came equipped with flags, face paint and full-fledged pride. the mexico versus chile soccer game sold out fast. but getting here, and to the designated parking lots, wasn't easy. >> we had to ask a bunch of people until someone pointed us in the right direction. >> reporter: are you frustrated?

>> very frustrated. >> reporter: traffic crawled through the streets of santa clara. lanes were closed, cones were up and police were out. but there was still a lot of confusion. >> i was in a line. and i was in the wrong line in my car. so, that took me like 45 minutes. and then, when i went, i make it finally, oh, you're in the wrong line. you need to be that way. >> reporter: adding to the congestion, great america traffic. stadium management, meantime, is keeping a close eye on things tonight. not just on traffic flow. but also on the new turf. the 49ers installed the same type of turf it used at candlestick park. the team hopes this sod will cut down on my problems. tonight's match was the first test on the new field. aside from the traffic, women were upset about the purse policy here at the stadium. only clear bags and wallets are allowed.

in fact, my wallet would be considered too big to take in. that's why women should check their bags or leave them in their cars. live in santa clara, abc 7 news. >> good tip. thank you, lisa. crews are tearing down the san francisco building that was gutted by a huge fire this week. they're starting with the facade of the retail business on mission street, between 22nd and 23rd. the building was destroyed thursday afternoon by a five-alarm fire. building inspectors say it has to come down because the structure is too compromised. it was home to a wholesale shop. the cause of the fire has not been determined. evacuation orders have been lifted, tonight, for hundreds of homes and businesses near a wildfire burning near yosemite national park. the fire broke out yesterday near mariposa. so far, no structures have burned. but firefighters say the dry conditions are making it tough to fight the fire. the fire has burned 300 acres

police officers have across california and the world are in the bay area this weekend for "operation urban shield." it's an intense training of real-life scenarios. but critics of the event don't like what they call the increased militarization of police. >> reporter: san francisco's

hall of justice was swarming with police saturday, all responding to reports of an active shooter inside the building. but this was only a drill. part of "operation urban shield" one of the training events across the bay area. castro valley, pellet weapons were used by police, in a scenario where a gunman takes hostages inside this church. >> all of the teams that have come through so far, have found this scenario will be very real. it doesn't give them a lot of time to practice or think about what they're going to do. >> reporter: bill guile is a church member, playing the part of a hostage. >> there are people that like to take over churches. >> reporter: some believe "operation urban shield" should not be happening right now inside the bay area. they're having a meeting about it inside this berkeley restaurant. >> there's a lot of the ongoing militarization and increasing

militarization of the police. >> reporter: many here are from the alameda county police and freedom party. they say after the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager last month. >> i think police need training. but not how to use more weapons. they need training in how to assess the situation and see if it's dangerous. >> reporter: a protest was held in oakland friday. mayor jean quan wants the event out of oakland next year. >> for us not to train would be really silly. for us to be on the ready would be very important. >> reporter: "operation urban shield" continues through monday. donations pouring in to help napa pets displaced by the earthquake. ruby and mackenzie raised almost $700 at her lemonade stand today. and pet food express matched the

that pulls back from the coast. we turn to sunnier skies across the bay area. a gorgeous day to wrap up the weekend around here, with temperatures a bit warmer than we were today. we'll notice hurricane norbert is weakening. look at that. winds, 80 miles per hour, down to a category 1 storm. west-northwest, at 8 miles per hour. as you go through the next couple of days, will weaken to a tropical storm. brings a wide swath of moisture to southern california and parts of nevada. a flash flood watch from two to four inches of rain that could bring flooding sunday into monday. thunderstorms with torrential downpours that could lead to flash flooding. along with that, we have waves that are above average. south-facing beaches around san diego, four to eight feet, creates dangerous swimming conditions and coastal flooding is possible. overnight lows in the bay area, mid-50s along the coast. as you go about your day, we

good evening. in tonight's headlines, the search is still on for a missing 6-year-old from san jose. sergio zepeda disappeared this morning. police interviewed the boy's mother and boyfriend all day, but they are not considered suspects. sergio is autistic and does not communicate verbally. he might only be wearing a diaper, no shirt or pants. a rescue crew pulled three people from the rocks near half moon bay tonight. a man, woman and child were walking along the rocks when high tide trapped them. another big test for levi stadium parking and traffic tonight. an international soccer match between mexico and chile ended around 9:00. drivers were still trying to get out of the parking lot two hours

later. tonight's match was the first big test for the newer turf at levi stadium, since it was replaced last month. president obama is taking heavy criticism tonight from some of his core supporters. immigration activists are blasting him for what they thought was a promise to take quick action on reform. now, the president says it will have to wait until after the midterm election. >> reporter: president obama is beating a tactical retreat from this speech delivered june 30th. >> i'm beginning a new effort to fix as much of our immigration system as i can on my own. without congress. >> reporter: even as late as friday, at the nato summit in wales, the president seemed to deny suggestions that he would postpone taking the lead. >> in the absence of congressional action, i intend to take action. and i'll be making an announcement soon. >> reporter: on the flight home, aboard air force one, mr. obama

plane that crashed off the coast of jamaica yesterday. this debris sank or floated away. lawrence and jane glazer took off from rochester, new york, heading for miami. air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the plane and dispatched two fighter jets to track it. the fighter pilots say they saw two people in the cockpit slumped over. the plane crashed in water. a cease-fire in ukraine was broken tonight. they each told reporters they were satisfied up to that point. in cities where troops fought earlier this week, some residents expected the cease-fire to fail. >> translator: there is so much confusion, he says. we don't know what will happen. when people say we must live in a united ukraine and we see

ukrainian forces in retreat, what should we think? >> despite agreeing with ukraine about the cease-fire's early success, russian expressed its anger, after the european union announced more sanctions last night. joan rivers family will hold a private service for the comedienne, despite joking she wanted a big sendoff, the funeral is invitation only. it will be in manhattan. and many of rivers' celebrity friends are expected to attend. rivers died thursday, after complications from throat surgery a week earlier. she was 81 years old. one of the most famous or infamous presidential campaign ads of american politics turned 50 today. >> eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. >> president lyndon b. johnson's

daisy ad helped him win his presidential bid against barry goldwater. it only ran once and shocked viewers who tuned in. it shows a little girl picking daisies before the scene turns into a mushroom cloud. volunteers came out to install solar panels in san francisco. the panels were installed on eight homes in san francisco's ocean view neighborhood. the money for the panels came from grid alternative, which not only provides panels but training. >> grid alternative does all of our work with volunteers. and job trainees. so, we're getting people that are interested in solar, maybe people that work with it all day for their job but never actually gotten to touch a panel. >> crews made up of all-women are working out on two out of the eight houses to get women

over the past 150 years, more than 85% of the wetlands along san francisco bay have been drained. but a partnership of nonprofit and government agencies is undertaking the largest coastal wet la wetlands coastal effort in the country. dan ashley has the story. >> reporter: from sky 7 h.d., you can see the big piece of land that was almost the site of a new indian casino. instead, it's being put back the way nature intended. >> we're restoring 1,000 acres of tidal marsh in the land awe you see around you. >> reporter: crews are moving 1 million cubic yards of dirt, enough to fill a line of dump trucks stretching from san

francisco to los angeles. it is led by the land trust, for what is the largest tidal restoration on the west coast. >> we're going to cut a 300-foot hole, a large breach in this levee. >> reporter: the wetlands are being brought to life south of highway 37, near mere island. another big wetlands restoration is taking shape. that project is led by the u.s. fish and wildlife service. price tag, $15 million to restore 1,500 acres that will be part of the san pablo bay national wildlife refuge. >> the area out here was farmed for oats and hay. >> reporter: craig garner is with ducks unlimit, a partner in both projects. >> we expect to do a lot more. >> reporter: you may know that wetlands are vit rall for wildlife. but it turns out they're critical for people, too.

the marshes provide a buffer zone to prevent flooding of nearby communities. and they filter out pollution before it gets into the bay. >> they turn out to be one of the greatest types of habitats to store carbon out of the air. >> reporter: both projects connect to other marsh restorations. and both face big construction challenges. it requires digging channel, building wide, gradual slopes and creating 500 smile islands, all to support habitat. reinforcing a levee, so it won't be compromised when bay water comes rushing in. these blocks are part of that process. >> this is a similar product you see in styrofoam coolers. it's more compressed. >> reporter: the foam is placed in a trench next to the highway. then, wrapped in huge plastic

sheets before covered with dirt. levee breaches for both projects are scheduled for next year. but it will take several decades for nature to fully complete the restoration. >> both projects will include a lot of public access to the wetlands. to keep up with the progress, look for the links we posted at abc7news.com. a wild catch by fishermen out of florida. an 18-inch giant shrimp was reeled in. a shrimp. scientists think it might be a manties shrimp. officials are reviewing the photo to identify the exact species. delicious. on monday, abc 7 will be the new home of celebrity chef, rachael ray. on friday, rachael spent the day here, posing for pictures. these are a few of the pictures we tweeted and posted of our time with rachael. she chatted with us about her upcoming show. and dropped a hint that despite
