developing news, mountain lion attacks a child on a popular hiking trail. >> just make it. i was in shock. >> hear from a man who helped save a lost six-year-old boy who walked miles from home and ended up at a homeless encampment. you don't see this often. no cars at all. all westbound lanes of the brain closed to traffic this morning. abc7 news starts now. a mountain lion attacks a little boy is badly injured on a popular hiking trail in the south bay. let's get straight to this developing news in the south bay. the search is on for a mountain lion that attacked a six-year-old boy in cupertino. it happened in the open space

preserve near the winery. we're live with what happened. reporter: officials with the department of fir and wildlife have blocked off the trail and are searching for the mountain lyon. -- the boy suffered bitemarks and is being treated at santa clara val hospital can, he is in serious condition. people with the department of fish and wildlife say his mom and dad fought off the cougar. >> the cat did make contact with the boy, did end up taking him into a brushy area, and his parents did fight the animal off, and the boy is in the hospital. reporter: again, the mountain lion has not been found. the department of fish and wildlife is working with park rangers to try to find the animal. you can see there are signs in front of the trail that do caution this is mountain lion

habitat and gives tips tot what to do if you encounter a mountain lion, the winery is still open but people are being cautioned the animal is still out there. >> a six-year-old san jose boy is back home tonight, safe and sound, after being missing for nearly 24 hours. sergio a zepeda wandered away from his home and end up in a homeless camp. reporter: no doubt little sergio resting up from his big adventure, which started on this very street and ended on the other side of that hill, believe it or not, at a homeless camp. >> he was just naked. i was in shock. reporter: jose never expected to see a six-year-old boy wander into the south san jose homeless camp where he was staying sunday. he says little sergio was plenty tired and very hungry.

>> doing fine, seemed okay. just scared. that's all. i made sure he got a blanket and food to eat. that's all. >> jose called police. authorities took sergio to the hospital as a precaution, then home to his worried parents. today they requested privacy but through friends thanked everyone who helped look for the boy, is autistic and doesn't communicate verbally. he wondered away from the family's home on saturday, wearing only a diaper. got out through the garage. >> it was frantic search on the ground and in the air. neighbors, fanned out, too. >> we were all around, searching over there, and down there, and then we all went up communication hill jurek police believe sergio set awe are off down the street, and then climbed up and over communication hill and then down into the homeless camp. a two-mile trek. >> i couldn't believe it. i was shocked. it can't make that far.

>> sergio is resting up from his adventure. police say no charged will be filed in his disappearance. >> victims of napa's earthquake that shook the area two weeks ago today will soon have a in the resource to help build. the city and county of napa will open a local assistance center. the center will provide people and businesses with information about building permits and financial assistance, food assistance, mental health, and other community resource programs. doors open 1:00 p.m. monday. napa has also launched a web site to assist in recovery efforted and you can find a link on our web site, abc7news.com. scientists now say the earthquake released groundwater that suddenly filled some dams and dry creek beds. people were puzzled by the water, fear the quake may have damaged dams. instead the chronicle reports i unexpectedly forced groundwater to the surface.

water officials are hopeful they can capture some of the extra water for use. happening now, nearly 700 people are gathering for an event to highlight that napa valley is recovering from the earthquake and very much open for business. these are the images we're familiar with from the napa quake. the city is not all ruins. people are having dinner tonight at 6:00 in the center of lincoln streak, the main thoroughfare in calistoga. part of the celebration of the strong will of recovery. three separate crashes involving nine vehicles caused a massive backup for people driving into san francisco from the east bay today. the accidents closed all westbound lanes on the bridge at 9:30 this morning. so take a look. a really eerie site. not a single car on the bridge. minutes later, traffic began flowing, albeit slowly across the bridge, and the backup

right now, redwood city water crews and pg&e are on the scene of a water main break. the area is shut down to traffic. officials say repairs could take several hours. the break has also affected water usage for people in a nearby apartment building. details on the cause of the break have not been released. president obama says he is ready to begin laying out his strategy for defeating the islamic militant group isis in the middle east. >> number one, this is a serious threat. number two, we had the capacity to deal with it. here's how we're going deal with it. i'm going to ask congress to make sure that they understand and support what our plan is. and it's going to require some resources i suspect above what we are currently doing. >> the president told nbc's "meet the press" he'll meet with

another nba owner is losing his franchise over racist remarks. atlanta hawks owner bruce levinson says he will sell his controlling stake in the team because of an e-mail he sent in 2012. he admitted it contained inappropriate and insensitive comments like, quote, my theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and also wrote the kiss cam is too black.
