after the animal had attacked his little boy, driven off the attack by the boy's father. that it actually followed them back down the hill. >> the search for a mountain lion after it attacked a 6-year-old boy, on a popular south bay hiking trail, good evening, i'm katie. the attack happened in the open space preserve near the historic pa kety winery. alisa harrington has been following this story tonight. >> this is where the attack happened and wildlife specialists are concerned about how bold the attack was. the boy is in fair condition. the lion has not been found and the search is over for the night

but will continue tomorrow morning. >> the 6-year-old boy hiking in a group of ten people. siblings and another family also with ten kids. the mountain lion attacked when the boy was in the open space. >> he did go after the head and neck. >> lieutenant boy said this happened around 1:00 in the afternoon. boit was walking ahead of the group. >> both of the fathers two of the families lunged at the lion, shouting aggressively as the attack was occurring and managed to scare the lion off. >> they carried the injured child a mile and a halfback to the winery where an am brans was called. open space preserve and connecting trails are closed off while fish and wildlife officials searched for the animal. if they find it -- >> the animal will be euthanized, because it needs to be tested for certain things, including rabies.

>> picking up a scent and lion's tracks have been spotted, at the winery, bag up clothing to look for traces of saliva. >> we get a dna profile on the cat. >> so they can track down the right animal. >> people who live in the area say the open space is a popular spot and kids are seen on the trails all the time. >> that's really frightening. my husband, goes on these trails with my son. >> at the trail head, there a sign that cautions, this is mountain lion territory and they fight back. >> the boy attacked was hiking up a large group. four adults and six other children. mountain lion experts and leslie brinkley, is an unusual scenario but there are more attacks because of the traut. >> a mountain lion pouncing on a human to put it in perspective. >> this is extremely rare. the last time a human was

attacked in the greater bay area was over 100 years ago. >> but there have been 14 attacks elsewhere in california since 1986 with mountain lions actually stalking deer. >> there are lots of deer around here, as we know. generally speaking, there's never an issue where lions are making a living finding food. >> but thissier could be different. because of the drought, according to the animal rescue group. >> animals are pushed to their limits. closer and closer to habitat, seeking out our water sources. >> saying those in spaces should carry a big stick, air horn or whistle over the next month or two. >> look up. mountain lions will climb trees. you have to be extra cautious and aware when you're out in the wild. certainly with children. keep them no further than an arm's length away and fwrup grouped up. not rambunctious and screaming.

that will draw attention of large cats. >> wildlife and game saz the boy was walking 15 foeteet ahead ofs parents. >> if you encounter a mountain lion, do not run. instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms. throw rocks and other objects. if attacked, fight back. people at a homeless camp are get credited for getting an autistic boy back to his family. he went missing 9:00 saturday morning, wearing only a diaper. the boy most likely got away by figuring out how to use the automatic door to the garage. sergio went on the street, up and over communication hill, and ended up at a homeless camp 2 miles away. jose was the first to spot the little boy.

>> he was just naked. i was in shock. he was fine but scared. i made sure he got a blanket, food to eat. that's all. >> he then called police. authorities took sergio, who cannot communicate verbally, to the hospital as precaution. >> a wildfire that erupted early this afternoon in yosemite national park has grover to 700 acres. he is burning in the wilderness. dozens had to be evacuated from the park and in dramatic fashion. a woman received this picture from her daughter today. her daughter was hiking half dome in yosemite park, when a fire changed plans. she has since become 1 of a hundred hikers recused off the famous peak and from other locations. the fire erupted around noon in dry wilderness that hasn't

muni. residents in one san francisco neighborhood say enough is enough. for the past year someone has been stealing plants right from their door steps in the triangle. the latest theft is last woke and caught on surveillance video. you can see two men on the street dig a plant out of a planter and carry it away. plant thieves hit the same neighborhood last january. they stole expensive potted plants and small tree from walter street. those tests were also caught on tape. mer said police arrested a bank robber this weekend. his undoing, they say the man tried to use his pants to carry away the stolen cash. police say 25-year-old shawn canfield robbed the chase bank on g street saturday. getting more than $2700 and police caught him nearby and shoved the money out of his pants and they all fell out of the pant leg. he said he needed money to visit

community resource programs. you can find a link on abcnews.com. we are learning more about the ground water shaken loo by the 6.0 earthquake. we first reported the phenomenon last month. 200 thousand gallons of water a day are now slowing down wild horse creek. the flows were about a tenth of that before the earthquake. water officials say they are hopeful they can capture some of the extra water for you. air b and b partnered with san francisco it help the city respond with emergencies. part of the white house innovation for disaster and response recovery initiative. they work with the city of emergency management to help displaced workers when needed. they have agreed to use technology to notify hosts and guests about hazardous incidents. >> hurricane norbert pounded

this is abc 7 news. >> good evening, welcome back. in tonight's headlines, the search for a mountain lion that attacked a 6-year-old boy in santa clara county will be looked for again tomorrow. the boy is in fair condition tonight at the hospital. a 6-year-old autistic boy who walked away from his san jose home saturday morning is back home safe tonight. thanks to a group of homeless people living in a camp about 2 miles away. a homeless man spotted sergio zapata this morning, clothed him and called police. a park forced the evacuation of some 100 campers and hikers. it is burning between yosemite

valley and half dome. roads are closed, but the park remains open. just days after president obama's fumbling remarks about having no strategy for dealing with isis terrorists, the white house said it does have a plan to defeat them. chuck receiverson has a look ahead at this week. >> reporter: president obama will use the eve of the 13th anniversary of the september 11th attacks to lay out a plan against isis. he will explain a game plan foregoing forward. mr. obama said today that u.s. will be part of an international coalition. carrying out air strikes against isis in support of ground troops. >> we will invade and defeat isil. same way we have gone after al qaeda. >> ted cruz of texas is on the same side. >> what we ought to have is a direct concerted overwhelming air campaign to take them out. >> the u.s. has announced expanded air strikes against isis in iraq to help iraqi

holmes of medicine, he and his colleagues at stanford hospital are being tasked to investigate diseases so miss serious, doctors haven't even been able to diagnose them. these are often patients of families who have sometimes spent years to travel to every physician they can find to try to find an answer to their problem. >> a role the stanford team is uniquely qualified for. they profiled the clinic which dr. ashley helped establish. it is a nerve center where investigators says stab lish dna, trying to pinpoint the disease. julie is hoping to learn whether her heart condition would be passed ton her young daughter. >> it would provide peace of mind for my husband and myself. >> now taking this a step further, becoming part after newly-created off or the set out by the institute of health. their mission is to diagnose diseases.
