attacked. game ward travis jarrett was with the dogs all night. >> feels very comfortable in that specific area. we have cut tracks going up the hill, back down the hill, and then also a few tracks that are fairly fresh. >> reporter: the 6-year-old boy was with his family and friends yesterday afternoon on a hiking trail just off the winery grounds, walking about ten feet ahead of the group when the lion grabbed and dragged him through the brush. authorities say his father and another man were able to get the lion to release the boy by shouting and scaring it away. tonight, the searchers will bring in fresh dogs and traps with road kill carcasses. the traps would enable the wardens to catch the animal alive and test its dna against that which was left on the child. >> we could conclusively demonstrate this was the animal that attacked this young child, it would very likely be euthanized. if not, of course we would let it go. >> reporter: the trappers say they prefer dogs which are

trained to sniff out the mountain lions' tracks, as seen in this video, by turning them loose they can go at their own pace. they found one and chased it up a tree. meantime, visitors to the winery had mixed feelings about going hiking here. >> i mean, i'm not too worried. i feel like it's pretty safe as long as you follow the safety standards. >> we have to cancel our plans to take a hike in the woods today. >> reporter: that's a good idea. game wardens say the lion was so aggressive it even followed the boy and his family as they were running back to the parking lot. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> from mountain lions to snakes, authorities trying to figure out how a 7 foot long burmese python ended up under a car outside an elementary school on friday. the humane society has the snake in custody and says it's very aggressive and they want to know who owns it. its future is not certain. a walnut creek police officer suspected of attacking a woman with a baseball bat in

richmond pleaded no contest today. 53-year-old gregory thompson appeared in court today. on august 16th prosecutors say he attacked a woman walking down the street with a bat. he was there keeping an eye on his father's vacant home which had been vandalized. the woman says she ran out of gas and was looking for help. thompson, a 30-year veteran with the walnut creek police department, is now on paid administrative leave. he faces one year in prison and will be back in court next month. a big step forward today for victims of domestic violence. the baltimore ravens have terminated the contract of running back ray rice. it happened hours after this video surfaced showing the nfl star punching his then fiancee in february. the nfl's decision reached all the way to the white house. >> one of the most important things that we can do to try to end the scourge of violence against women is for men to band together and to send a very clear signal that it is unacceptable for men to

perpetrate acts of violence against women. >> the league says they never saw that y larry beil is here with more. >> once you see the exterior video of rice dragging his fiancee off the elevator, the obvious question is okay, what happened inside. it's a very big stretch to imagine that with all of its resources, that the nfl could not get access to the second video and that tmz could get it first? so either the nfl covered this thing up, which i think everybody would agree was risky and ill-advised, either that's what they did, or they were simply negligent in pursuing this. you have prosecutors in atlantic city, they have subpoena power, certainly they must have seen the video or we assume they did. they felt a third degree aggravated assault charge was

sufficient in this case. the ravens also claim they had not seen the video until this morning and they acted quickly to cut rice once they became aware of it. now, from a local perspective, the next question here is how does all of this affect ray mcdonald of the 49ers, who was arrested on domestic violence charges two weeks ago but did play yesterday for the niners. the update on this situation comes from the sacramento bee which reports that police were called to mcdonald's home back in may on what was described as a disturbance call. it is not clear exactly what the circumstances were in that situation. after the backlash over rice, the first time and now the second time, the nfl has instituted harsher penalties for domestic violence so mcdonald will be suspended for six games if he is found guilty. he is due in court on may 15th. so we have two rices, ray and mcdonald, and two harbaughs, john and jim, the brothers, both dealing with very ugly situations. >> and this issue now that has

dom a head in the nfl and of course nationally and around the country as a result of it. >> the nfl does not look good in any way, shape or form. >> that video is awful. >> yeah, it does. a bizarre chain reaction crash in san francisco today. the driver of a taxi van had some sort of medical emergency. he plowed through a stop sign, hitting a bicyclist. a muni bus swerved to avoid the crash and hit four other cars. the bicyclist and driver of the mini van were taken to the hospital and they are expected to be okay. in the north bay, frantic parents are trying to figure out what to do after the sudden closure of a preschool in novato. some of the teachers and staff are left without jobs. wayne freedman joins us frompoint academy. >> reporter: all sorts of rumors going on about what's happening here. one rumor, the owner of the school has sold the school to another school that will reopen. yet another, she sold it to a land developer who plans to put apartment complexes in here. the only thing we know for sure,

that playground behind us is still full and has a few kids left but only for today. no one is happy, not the staff, not the kids, not the parents. from what we hear, not even the owner. as any parent knows, finding good day care about be difficult. for those cwith kids from the bridgepoint academy, difficult reaches a whole new level. >> i'm in shock. i had no idea. had no idea this was coming. >> we expected to drop them off this morning and we can't. >> reporter: last weekend, this mainstay of marin county day care surprised parents and staff by announcing it is closing effective immediately, that there were financial difficulties surprised no one. that they were this bad, did, even for teachers. >> it's always been kind of like a race to the bank for us. to cash our checks. >> reporter: margaret rowland, the school's director is just as much a victim as the students and parents. >> it hasn't sunken in yet. so i'm in the boat with all the teachers without a paycheck,

without a job. >> reporter: yet she worked today along with debbie watson, just to provide a safety net. after 13 years here, she will be cleaning out her classroom today. >> it's tough. it is really tough. don't make me cry. >> reporter: the school's owner did not go on camera today. in an e-mail, she told abc 7 news that the bridgepoint school had been in a pending sale for months, causing parents to pull their kids which led to financial hardship. quote, it hurts me extremely to close the doors, she said in part. i've assured the teachers they will be getting compensated. as for parents who paid tuition in advance, no help yet. have they said anything to you about how you will get your money back? >> not at all. >> reporter: wayne freedman, abc 7 news. fire crews in yosemite counted on calmer winds today to get the upper hand on a wild fire that is forcing hikers to evacuate. take a look at the smoke as it moved across half dome in this time lapse video from a national park service web camera.

lightning sparked the fire. the four square mile blaze quadrupled in size yesterday with strong winds just fanning the flames. rescue crews used helicopters to reach hikers threatened by the fire. nearly 100 people had to be evacuated. a fire broke out this afternoon on a classic wooden roller coaster near los angeles, part of the colossus collapsed at six flags magic mountain. the amusement park was closed at the time of the fire and had recently shut down the roller coaster which dates back to 1978. crews were converting the ride into a modernized wood and steel coaster when the fire broke out. businesses in san francisco's mission district are still feeling the effects of last week's huge fire. mission street which closed since thursday's blaze finally reopened to traffic this morning between 22nd and 23rd streets. the fire not only destroyed a store in a three-story building that housed it, flames also caused heavy smoke and water damage to nearby businesses. the owner of house of jeans said

premiere today at the state capitol in sacramento. the unveiling of the official portrait of former governor arnold schwarzenegger. laura anthony was there and she is live from sacramento. hi, laura. >> reporter: hi, dan. for some, the portrait unveiling is a quiet affair, maybe just a few people in attendance. not today, though. with the return of california's most famous ex-governor, a man who clearly has his legacy on his mind. former governor arnold schwarzenegger returned to sacramento with two of his sons to unveil his official portrait. one that will hang in the capitol in perpetuity. >> my seven years as governor were the most fulfilling years i have ever had in my life. >> reporter: before the unveiling, schwarzenegger reflected on his legacy as governor. >> i'm very proud of the things that did get done, from investing in our infrastructure to reforming our political system to protecting

spaces available. a ribbon cutting ceremony marked the completion of the new garage. you can start parking there next monday. there is also a residential and retail development going in that will provide 624 new homes with about a fifth of them priced below market rate. an update now to a story we first brought you last week on abc 7 news. a north bay high school band that had more than a dozen musical instruments stolen after they performed the national anthem before a san francisco giants game is able to play again. abc 7 news viewers helped replace 13 of 14 flutes and clarinets that were taken from the anna lee high band after the august 25th game against the colorado rockies. the band believes somebody took a container holding all of the instruments as they were loading them in the stadium parking lot. the original instruments have not been returned. many of them have sentimental value to band members. a shelter in one of san francisco's toughest neighborhoods has received a makeover compliments of students from a trendy design school.

carolyn tyler shows you this redo and how it is brightening the shelter and residents' spirits, too. >> reporter: the fashion institute of design and merchandising is located in san francisco's union square just a few blocks from the tenderloin but worlds apart, until recently. >> first was the paint color. again, make it warm and welcoming. >> reporter: she's one of 17 students who transformed the shelter where 22 families with 32 children live. the before picture shown worn, drab community spaces. then the young designers went to work. they revamped the kids' room, learned how to tile the kitchen by watching youtube videos and painted the sitting room. juan baez lived here with his 17-year-old son and says the makeover has lifted his spirits. >> now that they've redesigned the kitchen, i mean, it just

the fire has a 3d display and scanner that recognizes objects. however, reviews have been lukewarm and some critics say it has poor reception. amazon did not release sales figures. however, ad tracking data suggests only 35,000 fire phones were sold in its first month. do you have to buy expensive sunglasses in order to get full protection from uv rays? that's a good question. here's this. do cheap sunglasses work just as well? a uc berkeley professor has put them to the test. designers say it's costing upwards of $100, giving you full protection from harmful rays. cheap glasses make the same claim. uc berkeley's optometrist tested them both, using this light meter. first the designer glasses, true to their claim, they block all uv rays. the cheaper ones, they worked just as well. so you could save your eyes and your money if you can live without a designer label.
