live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. 13 years after a small and hateful minds conspired to break us, america stands tall and america stands proud. >> and this morning, thousands of americans who lost their lives in the september 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks are being honored and remembered. thanks for joining us. >> it was the worst terror attack ever on u.s. soil. this year, americans are remembering the victims as the nation faces threats from another terrorist group, abc news reporter reports now from ground zero in new york.

>> reporter: pictures in their hands -- >> linda m. cologne. >> reporter: their names on their lips. >> kenneth george grazola. >> reporter: the people who lost their lives on 9/11 honored today on the 137th anniversary -- 13th anniversary of the attacks. quiet, piercing through an ever emotional morning. moments of silence marking when the plane struck the twin towers. crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania, and hit the pentagon. >> 13 years after a small and hateful minds con spierd to break us -- conspired to break us, america stand tall and america stands proud. >> reporter: standing proud, but on alert. security, especially tight at this year's ceremonies. >> unless it's an every day situation, but the increased concern about isis is now adding to the work we're doing.

>> reporter: officers keeping quiet watch as farmers reflect on the pain that time hasn't healed. >> 13 years and it still feels like yesterday. >> reporter: and keep the promise made on september 11th, 2001. ♪ for the land of the free >> reporter: to never forget. marcie gonzalez, abc news, new york. united airlines flight 93 was on its way to san francisco when it crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania, on september 11th, 2001, and those were honored at the site of the crash. >> captain jason m. doll. nicole carroll miller.

>> nicole miller and jason doll were two natives on board. every year the passengers are remembered their their heroism. a group of passengers rushed the cockpit and overwhelmed the hijackers. that caused the plane to crash in a field before it could reach the intended target. believed to be either the white house or the u.s. capitol. union city also held a ceremony today honoring 9/11 victims. this ceremony took place about an hour ago at the flight 93 memorial at sugar mill landing park. it included pag pipes and a bell ringing. the union city memorial was deck dated in 2007. the 40 granite stones bearing the names of the pass jers and crew members. tributes are taking place all over the bay area in memory of those who died when terrorists attacked america 13 years ago.

abc 7 news reporter joining us in san francisco with our story, amy. >> reporter: hi sheryl, one firefighter said he can't help but think about what the firefighters went through. the call coming in, the adrenaline. it brings a lump to his throat every year. san francisco firefighters stopped what they were doing and stood at attention this morning at 6:59, the exact moment 13 years ago, that the south tower of the world trade center collapsed. after frfrlts had rush -- firefighters rushed in to help. they then reach name of firefighters who died that day. those who spoke the names of the dead say it was an emotional responsibility. >> it's an honor, and you feel privileged that you're here to share in honoring those that have passed us. >> reporter: the fire chief made sure to include her fire recruits in this ceremony, many of whom were teenagers or

younger when the terrorists attacked. >> really important for them to know how close the fire service is, how serious our work is, and our mission is. and to incorporate them early into the fact that what their oath means. >> reporter: although it focuses on the firefighters, mayor ed lee also wanted to honor kpo san francisco residents who are considered heros from that day. betty ong and mark bingum from flight 93. >> i bet he made that call to let people know the attack was on and kept with it, and so did mark when he rushed to make sure that they steerd the plane away and did everything they could. i felt it was important to add those names to people that we suggest are heroes and ones that i will recall for the city. >> reporter: every fire station in san francisco has hild the ceremony every -- held the ceremony every year since the attacks. and joann white says they'll do so as long as she is chief. reporting live in san francisco,

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. buses and light rail came to a stop in the south bay this morning to mark the somber anniversary. but it was more than a gesture. there was an important message to riders about vigilance and security. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose, matt. vta took a moment tout. and they also used the anniversary as a reminder to remain vigilant. in the quiet hours before the sunrise in downtown san jose, a vta light rail train stops at 5:46 a.m. far little longer than usual. it's the same time the first plane hit the north tower of the world trade center in 2001. the conductor prepared the train for a moment of silence. >> and so honor the men and women of the armed forces, thank you to preserve the safety and freedom vta will increase operations, decrease operations for one minute. >> reporter: security is on the mind of the santa clara valley

transportation authority. they were doing a fair sting at the north street station in japan town. workers were hoping to spread a message from the department of homeland security on this anniversary of 9/11. see something, say something kman is an effort to the raise awareness, a potential threats to transportation systems. >> it's not something they need to be worried about and concerned about every time they get on a bus or a train, but it's something that, you know, just as a general practice is part of your every day life. it's good to be alert and to be aware of a suspicious package just like at an airport. report anything that's going on. >> it's easier to report suspicious activity on the vta system thanks to a mobile app called vta alert. it came in april last year. since then, about 600 reports of vandalism, suspicious activity, unattended bag, thefts, assaults, and other crimes were maid to law enforcement while terrorist threat makes the headlines, daily crime is more of a concern today. >> this is way more of a viable threat than a package.

>> theft and violence on the light rail. >> reporter: the vta alerts app is available for iphones and android phones and is free to download. reporting live in campbell, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you so much. this morning we are hearing from one of the 15 san francisco firefighters who left their post 13 years ago to go and help new york city firefighters. kevin salis says he was at home on his day off when he heard about the terrorist attacks. at first he didn't think it was real. he remembers feeling stunned and angry. >> and it came pretty clear right away that a lot of firemen had passed away. so it was a pretty serious atmosphere at the fire house and a lot of guys were quickly thinking of what we could do. how we could help. >> well as soon as flights resumed, he and a team of san francisco firefighters left for new york. they paid for their own tickets, used their personal vacation time and then headed to ground zero. happening right now, the memorial service is just wrapping up for the 14-year-old

san francisco high school freshman stabbed to death by a former classmate. nick smith is live at st. mary's cathedral, nick. >> reporter: kristin, good morning, look behind me, pallbearers are taking him to his final resting place. hundreds pouring in to st. mary's to say good-bye to one of their own, 14-year-old high school freshman rashawn williams. take a look at some of this video. the hearse carrying the body was another reminder that this would be the last time many who knew and loved the teen would have an opportunity to say good-bye. hundreds of friends and family and classmates of the sacred heart students packed mary's for a memorial service honoring the freshman football player. you know, williams was fatally stabbed outside this corner store in the mission district tuesday, september 2nd, police quickly arrested a 14-year-old

classmate and charged him with william's murder. today, the focus was squarely on rashaun and how his untimely death brought so many people together. >> it's overwhelming to me. it leaves me speechless with with pain and with appreciation. >> its been a whirlwind of support and also anxiety, a lot of tears. but an overwhelming sense of community. >> reporter: he was a top student and talented football player who had earned a near full scholarship to sacred heart. the boy made his first court appearance in juvenile court on monday. abc 7 news is not releasing the name of the accused because of his age. back here live, you can see that those classmates, friends, and family have once again lined up outside the hearse, the services just concluded and i can tell you it was indeed a somber moment. i had an opportunity to speak to family members.

south african judge cleared paraolympian oscar pistorius of the two most serious charges against him. murder and premeditated murder. pistorius sobbing, he was sobbing in court this morning. the judge has not read her final verdict. that's expected tomorrow. culpable homicide. it is still on the table. if convicted of killing his model gfrtd, he could face 15 years in prison. the athlete says he mistook reeva steenkamp for an intruder and shot and killed her last year. nine people are under arrest after nearly a thousand law

enforcement officers raided the fashion district in los angeles. they called it operation fashion police. it's part of a larger investigation into money laundering schemes linked to mexican and other international drug cartels. the u.s. attorney's office says officers seized roughly $90 million, mexico tightened financial regulations several years ago. investigators say since then, cartels have turned to international trade such as the fashion industry to launder and smuggle drug money. unusual here, sheriff's deputies say a florida man stopped his own burglary attempt when he fell asleep during the crime. 29-year-old dion davis broke into a home, filled a plastic bag in stolen jewelry and fell asleep on the homeowner's bed. cleaning lady called 911 when she arrived and found davis passed out. turns out he was sleeping so well he didn't wake up with deputies stopped to take his picture. we're guessing when he woke up, you know, he was in handcuffs.

massive solar flare may affect technology here on earth. nasa released this image of the solar flare. it's a bright white spot in the middle of the picture there. the national weather service center says it's likely this flare produced a storm. that can temporarily disrupt power grids, and radio communications on earth for two or it three days after the eruption. >> wow, that's amazing. >> you can use that as an excuse. my gps couldn't find it. >> maybe not. let's look outside right now, meteorologist mike nicco, warming up? >> yes, ma'am, it is. you could use the sun today everywhere to get around. let's go ahead and go to the maps quickly. lots to talk about. look at the fog, lifting everywhere except for half-moon bay where we have a six mile visibility, that is good.

check out the wind, they are light and variable once again as high pressure is dominating our forecast. and that is bringing us the sunshine, the quick sunshine, except for the coast where we'll be spotty. we'll have sun at times, you'll have clouds at time. we'll call partly sunny there. this is the way it looks from emeryville this morning. you can see the haze hanging in the air and heat building. yesterday was hot, tomorrow, tomorrow, three days, that's what we get for a heat wave. spare the air today and likely again tomorrow. then increasing cleaner air and decreasing heat as we head through the weekend and into next week. east bay hills, livermore and san ramone have the worst air quality of anybody in the bay area. and that coincides with our air quality forecast. south bay, you could also have it too, but all of us in the spare the air this morning. this is why i haven't warmed up the coast in san francisco's as much as yesterday. 77's above average. you can see the finger fog pushing through, the sea breeze stronger than yesterday. but 8-12 degrees warmer once you get away from san francisco

compared to average. so we'll start down in the south bay where we have 90s in the a lot of areas except for sunny valley, and santa clara, and gilroy, 100 degrees. mid to upper 80s on the peninsula today until you get to milbray at 80. upper 70s in downtown, south san francisco, look at those mid-90s to even 97 degrees in santa rosa. we'll be in the mid to upper coast. we'll need the air conditioners, mid-90s to 100 degrees. this morning could see the golden gate, now it's clearing out nicely. use it as a backdrop to talk about our day game. warming up to 80. maybe sure you have the sunscreen and it'll be warmer than that if you're sitting in the sun. nice thing about these nights is they're longer and cooler. mid-50s to mid50u6. here's the high pressure. this is going to be semipermanent over the next three months. and that is why as you look at the precipitation forecast, it's going to be equal chances for us

to get an average amount of run which isn't a lot. if we could get that above normal to start the swing northwest from santa barbara, that would be nice. but the likelihood of that is is not really that great. and you could see with the sunshine, the dry air, dry ground, temperatures more than likely above normal. here's your seven day forecast. the pattern holds tomorrow, so i'm thinking we're going to have about the same type of temperatures and probably another spare the air day. notice saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, are the marine layer gets different. it knock twos to four degrees. warmer than average through the weekend. not until tuesday or wednesday when the temperatures fall back to where they should be for this time of year. remember today, spare the air, possibly tomorrow also if you're going to be outside. kristin, sheryl. >> mike, thank you. art, food, and history. certainly a lot of to explore where you live this weekend. abc 7 reporter leila goring has the details. stamping out homeless is a
