wong, abc 7 news. allen, thank you so much. a livermore golf instructor pleaded guilty to seven felony counts for sexually abusing three boys and trying to solicit someone to murder them. he was arrested last december and charged with 75 counts of abusing boys between the ages of 12 and 17. he faces 27 years in prison when he's sentenced next month. he taught at the golf course in livermore. one person is dead and another seriously injured after an overnight crash. a car driving the wrong way on interstate 280 crashed into another vehicle. it happened just before 1:00 a.m. near page mill road. there was just one person in each car. the chp is still trying to figure out which vehicle was driving the wrong way and if drugs or alcohol was a factor. meantime, a brentwood police officer is recovering after his patrol car was hit by a suspected drunk driver in oakley this morning. police say the driver ignored a stop sign and plowed right into

the officer's car on brentwood boulevard and delta road. that driver was arrested. there are several new developments tonight over the video of baltimore ravens football player ray rice punching his then fiancee and now wife in an elevator. 16 female senators, including barbara boxer and diane feinstein, sent a letter today to roger goodell. they are shocked and disgusted by the video, and want a zero tolerance policy against domestic violence in the nfl. jackie sears said she has successful pushed for an oversight committee involving ray rice and the domestic violence policy. the 49ers have suspended veteran broadcaster ted robinson for two games for comments about the ray rice incident. robinson said rice's wife is partly to blame for not speaking up. he's since apologized for his remarks. robert mueller has been asked to investigate the league's

handling of rice. if they found roger goodell lied or involved in a cover-up, the owners are ready to fire him. here at home, domestic violence was the main topic of discussion at santa clara university today. >> abc 7 news reporter lillian kim joins us at levi stadium with more on that. lillian? >> reporter: dan and cheryl, experts from all corners of the sports world converged on the santa clara university campus today, including the president of the 49ers. >> given a lot of the ongoing situations with the domestic violence, i'm not going to take questions on that. >> reporter: he quickly set the ground rules after his key note address at santa clara university. while he wouldn't talk about the domestic violence troubles of ray rice, or the 49ers' ray mcdonald, he did answer a question on whether moral values play a role when selecting players. >> you do the best you can to figure who would be a positive influence on a club. sometimes you're right and sometimes you're wrong. >> reporter: a panel following

him did not shy away from the domestic violence issue. former nfl player ryan nese said seeing the video of rice striking his then fiancee was disappointing to say the least. >> i have a lot of women in my life who i care deeply about. so when i saw that video, it struck a nerve. >> reporter: rice has been suspended indefinitely from the nfl. prior to the release of the latest video, he had only been suspended for two games. no one on the panel is calling on roger goodell to resign, but many say the power to discipline players should not rest solely with him. >> this should be influence in the composition selection of the investigation machinery by the nfl players association, by women's organizations. >> reporter: in the case of mcdonald who was arrested last month, no one here criticized his decision for allowing him to play. >> there hasn't been a plea or conviction. >> reporter: a topic that everybody seems to have an opinion about, and many hope

will bring about serious changes in the nfl. lillian kim, abc 7 news. four ex-san jose police chiefs are talking about the police force suffering because of massive budget cuts. vic lee is live in san jose with that story. vic? >> reporter: well, the chiefs did endorse santa clara county supervisor dave kortasy for mayor. i don't think i've seen four former police chiefs in one room unless it's a retirement party. it is a show of strength. they wanted to send a message to the public that the police department is broken. and they want it fixed. it was unprecedented. four former chiefs in one room. but they had enough of the turmoil in their beloved police department. >> i love this city, i love the department. and it's time for me to speak out. >> to watch it be taken away and destroyed, it's difficult for me

personally. >> there are gaping wounds here and it's hard to watch it. that's our baby. that's our police department. >> you care about the job, you care about the place. >> reporter: hess former police chiefs have more than a century of experience behind them. what grade did they give the department now? >> when it comes to support from city hall, it's quite frankly an "f." >> reporter: they base it almost entirely on b. it attempted to rein in growing costs. hundreds of cops have since quit, and the exodus continues. the chiefs agree there needs to be fiscal reform. but at what cost. >> it's a matter of priorities. it's where you put the money. it's what you say is most important. public safety is most important. >> reporter: the officers the chiefs say have become the unwitting victims of measure b. >> they've been demonized and they're leaving in droves. and nothing is going to change if we don't change the leadership at city hall. >> reporter: with that said, they endorsed county supervisor dave kortasy for mayor.

his opponent is sam lacordo, who was not available for comment. >> this is an election year, it's obviously an election stunt. >> reporter: chuck reed worked closely on pension reform with lacardo. he supports him for mayor. >> we've been able to stabilize the city. we're restoring services for a third year in a row and able to increase the staffing in the police department. >> reporter: they're vying against each other in a runoff election in november. meantime, parts of measure b are in litigation. vic lee, abc 7 news. as you well know, today is september 11th. it's been 13 years since the terror attacks that rocked the nation. a ceremony was held in union city. this ceremony was held at the flight 93 memorial at sugar mill landing park. 40 granite stones bear the names of the passengers and crew members, including a flight attendant who grew up in oakland. wanda green flew with united for nearly 30 years.

her family says they miss her every day. >> she was very warm and friendly. >> it brings us old memories. in the end we get ourselves together and we have to pick up and keep going. we just want to honor her. every time we get a chance. that's what this ultimately is about is honoring her memory. >> the san francisco, one firefighter said that today is rough. he can't help but get emotional thinking about what firefighters in new york city went through 13 years ago today. san francisco firefighters stopped what they were doing and stood at attention this morning at 6:59. the exact moment 13 years ago that the south tower of the world trade center collapsed. after firefighters had rushed in to help. they then read each name of the 343 firefighters who died that day. those who actually spoke the names of the dead say it was an emotional responsibility. >> it's an honor.

and you feel privileged that you're here to share in honoring those that have passed us. >> reporter: although the ceremony focuses on the firefighters, mayor ed lee also wanted to honor two san franciscans who are considered heroes from that day. betty and mark bingham from flight 93. >> betty made that fateful call to let people know the attack was on. and kept with it. so did mark when he rushed to make sure that they steered the plane away and did everything they could. i felt it was important to add those names to people that we suggest are heroes. and ones i'll be called for the city. >> the fire stations have held this ceremony every year since the terrorist attacks. and jo ann hayes said they will continue to do so as long as she is chief. in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. let's show you a live picture of new york city. those two twin beams of light.

more than 1,000 firefighters are in shasta county right now battling a wildfire that has doubled in size to more than 1,200 acres. evacuations have been ordered outside reading. the gulch fire threatens more than 100 homes. the fire is about 15% contained. investigators believe a car fire started it. but the fire crew out of control after it jumped a fire line. yosemite national park will reopen this weekend. park officials closed trails last weekend as the infamous meadow fire was spreading near the little yosemite valley. it burned nearly 5,000 acres. it's almost 23% contained. last week, hikers had to be rescued by helicopters after that fire exploded in size. a bit of a mystery at the state capital tonight. arnold schwarzenegger's official portrait has a bit of a smudge, just on the lapel. what was covered up? reporter walt gray has the story

from sacramento. >> reporter: monday was a star-studded event. the unveiling of the latest ex-governor's official portrait. the capital was jammed with celebs. there's always an extra buzz when it comes to arnold schwarzenegger. upon closer inspection, though, the portrait has a smudge. a blotch on the lapel. i showed capital tourists today a photo of the portrait. does that look a little sloppy to you? >> it is really sloppy. it isn't professional. >> reporter: multiple reports say that the smudge paint is covering a lapel pin with maria shriver's picture on it. the painting was in the works since 2003, when the couple was still together. >> it could have been touched. >> touched up better? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: you can clearly see the smudge? >> absolutely. >> reporter: i contacted schwarzenegger's publicist and asked if the smudge was originally maria shriver's likeness. i was told, quote, i think people have grown tired of the media racing each other to the bottom of every story, end quote. that may be true, but it doesn't

answer the question as to why this official portrait looks like it's been attacked by el marco. >> i think it's interesting that it would be something for people to talk about when they come over. >> that's why we're over here talking to you. >> it will be a nice conversation piece. >> reporter: the official portrait will be hung on the third floor of the capital next week. the other governors will be moved closer together for their new neighbor. and perhaps the final time gray davis will have to move aside for arnold schwarzenegger. in sacramento, walt gray, abc 7 news. doing a selfie thing there. new details on a story you saw only on abc 7 news. a san francisco restaurant with a controversial name is making the change. the restaurant used to be called banditos which is spanish for outlaws. it's also considered a slur by many in the mexican-american community. the owners of that restaurant announced it will be known as etcho. that means made in spanish.

the restaurant is located at market and sanchez in the castro district. more problems tonight for foster farms. the company is accused of widespread health violations, including mold growth and fecal contamination. a new york based advocacy group has released hundreds of pages of usda reports showing a number of problems at two california foster farms plants. the violations are all between last september and march. jonathan caplan with the natural resources defense council said they found a pattern of food safety violations at foster farms plants. >> we're particularly concerned about fecal matter violations at foster farms, because usda says that fecal contamination is the primary pathway for transferring pathogens around, and that does create a health risk for consumers. >> foster farms says food safety is and will continue to be our highest priority and our data as well as that of the usda

verifies our achievements. a new report supports management and labor union saying they should start on new contracts six months before they're up. they discussed the findings of an independent report at its meeting this morning. the report from a company in washington state cited lack of trust between labor and management for recent strikes. one of the recommendations each side negotiate with their own employees rather than outside consultants. >> the way normal bargaining is done, the workers committee and staff from the unions, and management, and their staff, sit down and talk together and try to iron it out. that's not how the district came to the table last time. hopefully we'll never see that approach again. >> the report is based on anonymous interviews of b.a.r.t. employees and managers and board members. don't you hate when you get your tires balanced and hit a pothole the same day. potholes are costing drivers $2,200 a year. a nonprofit transportation research group found that 49% of

roads in the bay area are rated in poor condition, and traffic congestion is causing drivers 61 hours of delays each year. they say that's costing bay area drivers thousands of dollars in lost time, and fuel, wear and tear, and crashes. >> the worst shape roads vehicles are operating under, they're depreciating. obviously anybody when we buy a new car, or any car, we want it to last as long as possible. but there are serious consequences of roads in rough condition. >> experts predict costs will rise even more, and transportation problems will get even worse without a significant funding boost at the local, state and federal levels. speaking of transportation problems, pickup trucks not known for great fuel mileage, but that's changing. >> "consumer reports" is partnering with michael finney here with the story tonight. >> pickups are known for the hard work they do and how well they do it. but they're not known for

getting great gas mileage. "consumer reports" said that's changing. the new ram 1500 echoed the diesel is the first half ton pickup on the market with a diesel engine in decades. "consumer reports" conducted fuel economy tests and found some pretty impressive results. >> it gets 20 miles per gallon. that's the best fuel economy we've ever recorded in a full size truck. >> compare its 20 miles per gallon to the chevrolet siller a silverado's 16. the 1500 with a hem i v-8 also gets 15 miles per gallon. diesel fuel does average 20 cents more per gallon and ram char chargers, $100 for a ram with a hemi v-8. you'll save about 200 gallons with the echo diesel engine. >> it will take you about four
