this investigation is still in the early stages. the female victim was found on north 15th street between a burger king and the white way motel. police say officers found her just after 2:20 this morning suffering from apparent blunt force trauma. she died at the scene. police did take some witnesses downtown to interview. an officer on the scene said it's an industrial area with businesses around here. a lot of homeless people come to this area but investigators are still looking in to what the victim was doing here. the street is blocked off between charles and commercial streets. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. breaking news from south offerca where olympic runner oscar pistorius has been found guilty of culpable homicide in the shooting death of his girlfriend. like manslaughter here. pistorius was ordered to stand

by the judge as she read the verdict. he was found guilty of a firearms charge. the sentence can range from a suspended sentence up to 15 years in prison. yesterday the judge ruled pistorius was not guilty in the premeditated murder of reeva steenkamp. a shooting victim is fighting for his life at san francisco general hospital, the victim in his 20s was found near the hospital at 23rd and utah streets around 8:30 last night. around the time the victim was located officers received reports that shots had been fired. a bit earlier in the 500 block of ellsworth street. more gunshots in san francisco last night just after 10:00 shots were fired near the intercontinental hotel near howard street. at least two cars were hit by gunfire. police began escorting guests

into the hotel for their own safety. so far there are no confirmed victims or suspects. a 1-year-old boy is recovering after he was accidentally shot in east oakland. it happened early yesterday afternoon at 77th avenue in the east mott neighborhood. investigators say the boy was outside the home with family members when the gun went off. the child is in the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries and police are still trying to determine who fired the gun and whether it was legally owned. a big story for commuters. b.a.r.t. officials say they discovered flaw in 23 train wheels on 20 cars after checking all its trains following last month's incident where a wheel fell off a moving train. it came off at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station on august 26th shutting off service at the height of the afternoon commute. they immediately grounded 40 cars with suspect wheels. since 13 crews have tested 5,500

wheels. seven trains are still out of service. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield will have a live report at the top of the month. president obama has declared the napa valley earthquake a major disaster. it releases federal aid for napa and solano counties. the white house did not say how much money would be available but a preliminary assessment found $87 million in earthquake costs that could be eligible for federal assessment. federal emergency management agency is still surveying the damage and may recommend even more resources. dna analysis and rabies test results are expected today on the male mountain lion. search dogs picked up a scent and forced the cat up a tree in coukupecupertino not far from t

jerry hill will hold a news conference to urge governor brown to sign a bill that would have the state mediate a resolution to restore public access to martin's beach in half moon bay. the governor has until the end of the month to sign or veto the legislation passed by the state senate last month. it requires the billionaire owner to negotiate to restore access to the beach. he bought oceanfront property there in 2008 and closed the public access. walnut creek's downtown parking system is leaving paying customers with tickets rather than minutes on the meter. the problem is the inground sensors which wirelessly tell sidewalk meters if a car is in the spot or not and the meter responds accordingly. however, some meters have proven to be too sensitive and they can be tripped if a truck rolls by.

diego just three weeks ago. we're continuing to follow this story and we'll have updates on twitter. ohio state highway patrol troopers have found and arrested a notorious convicted teenage killer after he escaped from a state prison. thomas t.j. lane made an unforgettable court appearance after killing three high school students in 2012. he revealed a shirt with the word killer on it and laughed and smiled as the victims' families described him as an animal and a monster. lane climbed a fence to escape but only made it 100 yards before he was captured. another sign of hope in the fight against the deadly ebola virus. a ucsf researchers said they'll need more money and resources to save lives. we've got the story. >> reporter: in sierra leone dr. dan kelly is a teacher and he's taught thousands of health care

an initiative to split california into six separate states could be on its last legs. the initiative has over 207,000 signatures short of qualifying for the 2016 ballot and it must have those signatures by the end of business today. los angeles and four other counties have not reported their numbers to the secretary of state. the initiative, the brainchild of a venture capitalist would divide california into six states each with its own governor and legislature and two senators. more than 1,000 firefighters in shasta county battling a wildfire that doubled in size to more than 1,200 acres. evacuations have been ordered near bella vista.

the gulch fire threatens more than 100 homes and it's 15% contained. investigators believe a car fire started it but it grew out of control when it jumped a fire line. yosemite will open the half dome cables. they were shut down last sunday when a wildfire broke out. the meadow fire has burned almost 5,000 acres and is 23% contained. many trails and campgrounds near the fire remain closed but the park's main entrances and most of its attractions including yosemite valley are open. yesterday was warm and let's see if the weekend is the same way. >> we'll ease a little bit every day. if you are going to the farm tomorrow to watch army and stanford, tough game last week. bounced back. and 81 degrees and dropping down to about 79. not much of a change during the game. uv index is going to be very high just like it was last week. traveling around the state triple digits into the central

co-founder paul allen finds rare and antique vehicles for his museum in washington state. vulcan war birds paid $2.5 million for a german panther tank that was auctioned off in july but the company says the tank was never turned over to it. vulcan is now suing the company which ran the auction and the foundation which sold the tank for a breach of contract. new details this morning on what led honda to issue a massive recall involving air bags. "the new york times" reports an air bag exploded in a honda accord in 2004 in alabama shooting out metal fragments and injuring the car's driver. honda and its japan air bag supplier deemed it an anomaly and they did not issue a recall or seek the involvement of federal safety regulators. "the times" reports that the other automakers were not aware of defects in their vehicles for years putting off their recalls.
