a good saturday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm matt keller. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argent. hi, leaisa. >> high clouds and low clouds. another 50 minutes to sunrise. we have a combination out there. we'll call it partly cloudy, but low clouds here in san francisco making it a little of an obscured sky here. the deck is not too low, so no problems over the golden gate. it's 50 in oakland and the clouds are in argos. san francisco bay low clouds, and we're looking at numbers all around the bay. warmer this morning. we'll look for another warm afternoon, but despite that, the sea breeze kicks up throughout the day and we will see numbers hopefully shy of 100 degrees inland, upper 80s to the upper 90s. san francisco, look for about 72 today.

mid-60s pacifica and oakland upper 70s, the rest of the bay in the upper 80s. this is a warmer day of the weekend. we'll forecast a cooler day tomorrow, pinpointing your afternoon temperatures and a cooler week coming up. matt? thanks, lisa. investigators are searching for a possible arsonist after two fires were set in narvado. katie marzullo has the story. >> we hike up here all the time. it's our favorite. it's so close to our house. >> reporter: they're saddenned to see this chunk of land, smoke still heavy in the air. they were careful to keep the flames to an eighth of an acre. >> there is definitely a lot of fuel to -- if they didn't put it out in time, this whole area could be lit up. >> reporter: not six minutes later, firefighters had a second fire on their hands at nearby

o'hare park. police say both fires are suspicious, possibly the work of an arsonist. only a few months ago, someone was intentionally starting fires in the north bay, and that person is still on the loose. in june 16 acres burned. in terra linda, 50 homes had to be evacuated. in may, someone started 11 separate grass fires, two more in homes in nevado. now nevado has been hit twice. police have added extra patrols in the area and neighbors have to do more to do their part. >> we have to be more watchful. maybe someone has seen something and will come forward. >> if you know anything about these fires, you're asked to call the nevado police department. developing news out of southern california where dozens of homes had to be evacuated due to a rapidly moving brush fire. the silverado fire started in the cleveland national forest in orange county at 10:30 yesterday morning. it has charred more than 1600

acres. fires being fueled by dry brush and steep, hard-to-reach terrain. a state trooper is dead and another injured after a shooting at a police barracks in northeastern pennsylvania. the shooting happened late last night in blooming grove township in pike county. helicopters, swat teams and state police from new jersey and new york are aiding in the search for the suspect. investigators say the shooting happened during a shift change and it appears targeted at state police. new details this morning about a police shooting in san francisco earlier this year. the san francisco medical examiner's office has released a full autopsy report for alex nieto. it says nieto suffered as many as 15 gunshot wounds from 10 bullets. nieto had brandished and fired a taser at them. his body did not any signs of any prescription antibiotics prescribed to him.

he had odd behavior, including a psychiatric hold three years ago for attempting to burn his parents' house down. friends are calling for justice, beginning with a federal investigation. a strange story on the peninsula. someone is posing as a cop and hassling teenagers. here's a sketch from the real police of the guy they're looking for. he has a car with flashing lights and a fake badge. abc 7 news reporter sergio cantano has details. >> reporter: police say this man pulled up on two teenage bicyclists and started shouting at them through a vehicle loud speaker. >> they split ways and the car continued following one of the kids around a corner. and eventually the kid pulled over thinking maybe this is an undercover police officer. >> reporter: according to police, the unmarked car had what looked like blinking police lights installed, and the driver showed the teenage rider what looked like a police badge. >> it had silver, some kind of

coloration to it. and then the subject pulled what appeared to be a black stun gun or a handgun. >> reporter: one parent who didn't want us to use her name says she's concerned about the trust that might be violated. >> kids are pretty rule-oriented, so if somebody of authority stops them on the street, they're not going to know this is not an official cop. >> reporter: i talked tie residere -- to a resident who said she saw a car with blinking lights right outside her house where the detective said this went down. she said she will tell her kids exactly what police are advising. >> if you're at all concerned or not sure, don't stop. tell them you want to be with an adult. >> reporter: palo alto police are looking to see if this man might work for them. a new scare for residents on the peninsula, another mountain lion sighting just north of where a six-year-old boy was mauled by a big cat on sunday. take a look. the latest mountain lion was

seen on devonshire boulevard last night. what you don't see in this photo is how close the mountain lion is to homes. sightings are not rare, but it's leaving residents uneasy. >> i knew there were mountain lions over here, but i saw one and it was kind of scary. >> since the attack in cupertino last sunday, there have been two more sightings on the west peninsula. wildlifo fishlz have also confirmed that the mountain lion they caught and killed this week is the one that attacked the six-year-old. the open space preserve will reopen today. they've been closed since the attack. authorities are searching the california coast for a sailboat that may have carried a boy believed to be abducted by his father. they left a port in seattle on august 28. billy was expected to return to his mother in pennsylvania on september 4, but neither he nor his father, jeffrey hansen, have

been seen since. this is the 1976 sailboat they're believed to be on. it's called the drako and has a six-inch red stripe on its side. this morning nfl running back adrian peterson is out on bail after turning himself in to texas authorities last night. peterson was indicted by a grand jury yesterday on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child. he posted $15,000 bail after being booked in a montgomery county jail and was released about 30 minutes later. peterson told police he spanked his six-year-old son with what he called a switch, which is a tree branch. his attorney says peterson is a loving father who uses discipline with his son. peterson says he uses the same discipline with his son that he experienced as a child growing up. he says he never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury. the vikings have deactivated

peterson for tomorrow's game. the arraignment for ray mcdonald was postponed for monday. the san jose district attorney's office said mcdonald's arraignment is delayed because police haven't finished their investigation. he played in last week's game against dallas and is expected to play in tomorrow's home opener. happening today, the san francisco 49ers will have the opportunity to test the field at levi's stadium since it's been resodded. sky 7 hd was overhead yesterday as workers put the finishing touches on the field. it has been resodded twice since coach jim harbaugh was forced to cancel practice after players slipped on grass during the pre-season. the 49ers will host the chicago bears tomorrow night. it will be the first time the stadium is used for an nfl regular season game. the 49ers have an elaborate pre-game ceremony planned for tomorrow. the team says the facility, grass and traffic plan have all been improved and are ready to

go. people who live in neighborhoods near the stadium say they're ready and hope things don't get out of hand. those attending the games aren't supposed to park in the neighborhoods, but during the pre-season events, they still found their way in, littering and urinating along the way. >> we just want people to be more conscious about our residential areas and just being courteous. >> those thousands of fans who will flood santa clara tomorrow will drop some serious cash, be part of 49ers history. at the box office yesterday, standing room only tickets in the end zone sold for $400. we went on line and the cheapest ticket we found was $430 in the very top row. it looks like the weather will be pretty nice. maybe a little warm for the game tomorrow night. >> everybody is realizing how warm it gets there, especially in an afternoon where temperatures are above average. another hot one on the way. changes are arriving today. right now our clouds have moved across the bay entering berkeley this morning. still 58 downtown, so they are in and around the bay with high

about a bloody brawl involving former vice presidential candidate sarah palin and her family at a large house party last weekend. the family attended the event in anchorage are husband todd, kids bristol, willow and track. the family was asked to leave the party after track palin allegedly attacked another guest who had previously dated his younger sister willow. a witness who saw the fight said bristol palin joined in and punched the party's host several times. >> i heard sarah palin scream out, you know who we are, don't you? it was like we were on a jerry springer episode. >> reporter: sarah palin confirmed they were at the party but stopped short of saying what role they had in the incident. a teen had a bear island vacation. here's the story of how her vacation changed an island.

>> reporter: 16-year-old hannah richardson has traveled the world. she has options in life. but when she ventured to nicaragua's koran island, her view has changed. >> i found out a little girl had drowned there in the ocean. >> reporter: hannah also found out few children on this impoverished island don't know how to swim. >> parents don't know how to swim, so they're not going to teach their kids. they're all afraid of it. >> reporter: the next year hannah collected 120 swimsuits, created a program and went back to the island to teach children how to swim. >> i was expecting 20 or 30, and when i got there, there was something like 80 kids there. >> reporter: for ten days straight, hannah, who is a certified lifeguard, taught and tested each child. all of them passed. hannah was showered with love

and thanks. >> i don't need to be paid in order to be satisfied. it was great to have people come up to me and say that to me, and it just warmed my heart. >> i've always tried to teach my children that it's not about going to church and sitting there every sunday. it's about living a good life, helping people, being kind to people. >> reporter: hannah's kindness has caught on. other vacationers have decided to continue their swim lessons on koran island and hannah will return there in december to teach again. in brentwood, alan wong, abc 7 news. apple says it had record demand for its new iphone and some of those people who tried to preorder it yesterday morning found it extremely frustrating. laura anthony has more. >> reporter: the frustration for iphone 6 buyers showed up early on twitter. jeremy horowitz wrote, it's 12:00 a.m. pacific. which means the guy who is supposed to open the apple store has a dead apple watch battery.

people who stayed up late to preorder might have been greeted by this, or some other clear indication that the apple site and others associated with the new iphone were overwhelmed. leslie covers apple for san francisco-based cnet. >> it seemed like there was a gigantic amount of demand, and apple and a couple carriers weren't quite drid ready to han the load they got in the middle of the night. >> reporter: young alex wants to get an iphone 6. but when it comes to preordering, he has his limits. >> reporter: so if you had to wait an hour, is that worth it? >> yes. >> reporter: two hours? >> no. >> reporter: an apple spokeswoman was able to say that's why the site was busy short of saying it crashed. she said the response has been incredible with a record number of preorders overnight. the site was processing orders just fine later in the morning. >> i didn't have any trouble.

i woke up at 9:00 a.m. before work and i just went on apple.com and preordered. i didn't have any issues. >> reporter: then there were those who got on line before midnight. >> i think i was actually able to do everything at 11:59 and cash'd out and everything. >> reporter: the apple iphone 6 is still available on line, but preorders for the iphone 6-plus are already sold out. iphone 6 will be in stores september 19. beginning in december, bart will offer overnight bus service between san francisco and its busiest east bay stations. bart is in talks with ac transit to operate the service. bart has said buses are the best they can do for early morning riders. track maintenance won't allow for 24-hour train service like in other cities. google is planning to test prototypes of its self-driving car close to home. our media partner, the san jose

measuri mercury news reports they will turn a track into a test driving program. since moffit field is owned by the federal government, they do not need to worry about regulations that require cars have working brakes just in case the technology fails. organizers of the annual event of the five and a half hour comedy fest plan to hold a tribute to robin williams. robin williams took part in the first comedy day three years ago. some of the headliners include margaret durst and margaret cho. it could affect gps signals, radio communications and more technology through monday. it could also have another effect. some californians may be able to

see the northern lights. accuweather.com says the northern borealis will be visible from california near the oregon border. so if you're up for a drive this weekend, you might want to check that out. normally you have to drive to alaska for that, so that's pretty cool. >> we're nearly a week away from fall, so we have that going for us and another nice day for today. subtle changes allowing for that tomorrow. sun coming up at 6:50, sets at 7:20. that's 12 hours and 30 minutes of daylight. those longer nights in line for cooler numbers in the north bay, in the 50s. elsewhere it's in the 60s particularly over in livermore. some high clouds in the mix. temperatures are well into the 70s. so a little bit of high cloudiness and the sunrise making for a nice dramatic sky here. looking at mt. diablo where

temperatures range to 68 downtown. morgan hill typically one of the cooler locations, and it is this morning at 56 degrees. but overall, everyone is a few degrees warmer than we were yesterday at this time due to all the warmth we had. but even with the longer nights, still retaining that warmth for now and into the afternoon, certainly with hot temperatures inland again. 62 by the delta, partly loud i skies there. livermore the warm spot at 65. clear sky and you see that 52 in napa. high clouds and fog this morning. inland heat eases just a bit but still numbers well above average. about eight degrees above average inland. for more upper 90s, especially out at the delta, a cooler pattern gets under way next week, but it's going to start tomorrow with that sea breeze kicking up. the range was about 43 degrees yesterday from our coast to our inland valleys, and today not quite as dramatic, but high pressure still in control, and that allows for another warm day

today but not quite as warm. the heat extends all the way into southern california, so with the dry conditions, the thicker marine layer could help us out, but it's going to take some time and we will get into a breeze later on today. but for army at stanford, watch out. it's going to be a warm one and a good game with upper 70s at 2:00. 5: 5:30, 82 degrees and taking you over to oakland tomorrow. it will be a very pleasant mid-70s. low 70s at 4:00. plenty of sunshine once again as the texans come to town. in the south bay today, more warmth and some high clouds. 86 san jose, 92 in las gatos. you can see the high clouds but still quite warm on the peninsula. 83 in redmond city. up in north bay it will be a warm one from petaluma to c calistoga at 90.

argent. hi, lease a. >> hi, matt. waking up to high clouds out there and a pretty start to the day. mt. diablo, take a look at those oranges and reds. temperatures are cool in the north bay in the 50s with upper 60s out toward livermore, 59 in san carlos and we'll see those high clouds in the mix throughout the afternoon. but still a warm day. maybe not as warm as yesterday. hoping for not that 103 in vacville. forecasting upper 90s there. but still with the high clouds we'll warm through the low 70s today. san francisco 78 and oakland with 86 in san jose, and those upper 90s inland. but these reds begin to recede and we'll see that sea breeze kick in a little bit today, more dramatically tomorrow and that sets the stage for a cooler week ahead. i'll explain in a few minutes. matt? thank you, lisa. new this morning, president obama is distinguishing the military campaign against islamic state militants from the decade-long wars in iraq and afghanistan. in his weekly address, the

president says this fight must avoid mistakes of the past. he says under u.s. leadership, more nations are joining a coalition against the extremists who control up to a third of the territory in iraq and syria, and as the fight against the islamic state can't be america's alone. >> what's needed now is a targeted, relentless, counterterrorism campaign against isil that combines air power, contributions from allied partners and more support from forces that are fighting these terrorists on the ground. and that's exactly what we're doing. >> the president announced this week a plan to launch airstrikes in iraq and syria and to train and equip moderate syrian opposition fighters. damage from the earthquake in napa is now by presidential decree a presidential disaster area. it's not bringing a lot of money that people were hoping for, at least not yet. wayne friedman reports. >> reporter: here's the good news in napa.

almost three weeks since the quake and downtown is coming on strong. sure, in places it still looks like a disaster area, but at least the federal government now recognizes that fact. so why isn't linda cordair, who owns an art gallery, thrilled at the prospect of federal assistance? >> i'm disappointed that it's not more clearcut. i think if the aid is there, it just needs to be there across the board. >> reporter: business owners aren't everybody, nor homeowners or renters. this disaster opens furnnds but only for city business owners so far. >> i don't know what's happening with the process back there in washington, d.c. i'm hoping they're quicker with our individual assistance requests that's part of the fema request. >> reporter: just off main street, al showed us where a high-end wine rack fell over, turning into a blend on the floor. he says the disaster cost him a

quarter of a million dollars. >> usually they offer loans with zero interest for businesses. i'm not sure how they'll do it this time, but that would help a lot of us small business on the retail side or the production side. >> reporter: it's a similar refrain. in linda's art gallery, the disaster broke windows and where he could walls. she's tens of thousands of dollars in debt and impatient with a federal government that, in her opinion, should and could have made napa more of a priority. >> we should have heard by now, i think, already. we absolutely need it. everybody needs it. there are people that are homeless, businesses that are closed. i get that the roads need fixed, but it's about more than that. it's about people's lives. >> and they're waiting. in napa, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. on "beyond the headlines" tomorrow morning, a look at the recovery effort of the quake and how the city is coming back. we talk at the mayors of both

cities and look at the support they're getting from the community. >> there's been an amazing amount of recovery. the amount of work these restaurants had to do. everybody lost tens of thousands of dollars of food and glassware. people are saying, i have some old glasses from the quantus fundraiser, do you want to use those? >>. the steel workers have put up the last beam on a massive expansion of the san francisco museum of modern art. only abc 7 news can show you what's going on inside, and what you're about to see can only be summed up as extraordinary. >> reporter: the new addition to the san francisco museum of modern art is taking shape. now rising 20 stories above the street. >> very exciting after years of work and preparation to finally see the building coming up. >> reporter: only abc 7 news was there when museum director checked out the progress on the

$335 million expansion. it is desperately needed. since the current museum opened in 1995, the collection has grown in size and popularity. exploding from 12,000 pieces to roughly 32,000 works of art. that includes 1100 works from don and doris fisher, co-founders of the gap. 22 million people have visited the museum since it was founded in 1995. half of them have come since it moved to market. >> reporter: from sky 7 hd, you can see the building rising from buena gardens. when it's completed, it will be as cutting edge as the art it will hold. >> it houses great works of art, and so as you approach the building from a distance, you should recognize that it has a unique function in the city. >> reporter: the expansion is going up behind the existing

landmark building designed by famed architect mario blota. when completed, it will add 35,000 new feet for exhibitions. >> it's a very calm experience. the rooms are designed to allow the art to move forward in your consciousness, so it has less sculptural identity on the interior. >> reporter: last year crowds lined up outside the museum to get a final look before destruction. they are packing up many of the museum's priceless works now being stored in an undisclosed location. but not everything is tucked away. the museum loaned some of its collection to other museums around the state. at the asian art museum in san francisco, gorgeous takes a look at our perception of what is beautiful over 2,000 years. the exhibit runs until 2014. >> we have an exhibition opening in a couple weeks at the oakland museum of california. >> it will be just a peek of

the forecast, we're just adjust tg a little bit. a little cooler today, huh? >> that's right, about five degrees. and we are running about five degrees below average. so that will bring us to seasonal norms over the weekend. high clouds in the mix today as well as low clouds. plenty of fog near watsonville and salinas this morning. it's partly cloudy to cloudy around the bay. to livermore that observation is clear at 67 degrees, the warm spot. but with the longer nights, we're getting cooler air descending into the valleys and it's cool in the north bay. here's a look at mt. diablo. we've been enjoying high clouds and that sunrise is three minutes from now. 61 in oakland, 60 in san jose. five miles visibility and morgan hill is checking in at 66 degrees. here's emoryville. you can see the low clouds. another day of upper 70s today in oakland. average high about 74 or so around oakland, and we're looking at numbers a little
