good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, hi, everyone. as we wake up this morning, we have low clouds and fog at the coast. live doppler 7 will pick up higher clouds throughout the morning and afternoon hours, but we are looking at the cooling trend slowly getting underway. we trimmed a few degrees yesterday. a few more today in san jose. it's clear at 60. most of the low clouds along the shoreli shoreline. half-moon bay is cloudy at 57 degrees.

it will be warm inland with more 90s arriving. we'll look for temperatures to remain in a range from the 60s where it's been comfortable at the coast to the 90s inland. a suspect has died in an officer-involved shooting. police responded to uncle sam's liquor store on cutting boulevard. officers are not saying what happened, but an altercation occurred leaving the suspect dead. the officer was not injured. as protocol he has been placed on administrative leave while that incident is being investigated by the richmond police and the district attorney's office. the extremist group isis is escalating its acts of violence

to include political leaders. the video of a third western citizen includes a threat to david cameron. sergio quintana has more on this developing story. >> reporter: this still image of the moments before david haynes' execution looks familiar. the british voice is similar to that of that who killed james foley and steven sotloff. haynes is a british citizen who worked for a french agency. he was abducted in syria in march of 2013. his brother released a statement saying his joy and anticipation for the work he did in syria is for myself and family the most important element of this whole sad affair. he was and is loved by all his family and will be missed

terribly. haynes had two children, a 4-year-old girl and teenage daughter. in his wedding pictures he wore a kilt proudly displaying his scottish heritage. president obama spoke about his strategy to counter isis. >> what's needed now is a targeted, relentless counterterrorism campaign that includes american air power, contributions from allies and partners, and more support to forces fighting these terrorists on the ground. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of state john kerry traveled to the middle east and spoke in egypt trying to build regional support for the strategy. >> it's only a matter of time before the threat of terrorism anywhere becomes a threat of terrorism everywhere. that is certainly been proven true in the case of isil. >> in the video the terrorist threatens uk prime minister james cameron saying haynes' execution was retaliation for military coordination between the united kingdom and united states. prime minister cameron quickly issued a statement saying, the

murder of david haynes is an act of pure evil. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. slain journalist james foley's parents never knew what the government was doing. they say they were told they could be prosecuted for raising money to pay a ransom for his safe return. foley's family announced the james w. foley legacy fund to support families of american hostages and aid american journalists reporting from conflict zones. on this week isis will dominate the discussions. white house chief of staff will talk about the latest on the administration's strategy against the extremist group. you can see this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 here on abc 7. sheriffs deputies are investigating the shooting death of a woman at her glen allen home. they say it was just before 7:00 last night when a man called 911. he reported his wife had attacked him with a knife and that he shot her.

deputies discovered the victim's body and said the husband was bedridden and not able to walk. they have not said if he's been taken into custody. san jose police tried to look at surveillance footage to see if they can link anyone to a suspicious device near a hotel. it was around 10:30 yesterday morning. patrol officers asked explosive experts to try to determine what that device was. >> they examined it visually, did a canvas for witnesses, evidence. we basically took it as far as we could take it without touching it it. finally, we made the decision to open it up and often times that renders safe, which is what it did today. >> the bomb squad still doesn't know what it was. they say it was harmless.

most of the hotel remained open for the six hours it took to give the all clear. the first and second floors were the only ones that were closed. developing news from southern california, an e vaxuation order remains for 200 homes in orange county as a wildfire continues to burn in the cleveland national forest. flames have charred 1,500 acres. the fire is 10% contained. it broke out friday morning in the middle of a heat wave. triple digit temperatures are expected there again today. that plus the rugged terrain makes it really tough for the more than 800 firefighters battling the flames. a brush fire in mend see know county has destroyed seven homes. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon. the cause is unknown. a viewer provided this video of smoke from that fire. so far the flames have burned at

least 125 acres. the red cross workers have set up a shelter for people who have lost those homes and for those whose homes have been evacuated. you might notice some construction work going on if you're headed across the golden gate bridge today. the work involves realigning the southbound lanes near the toll plaza those lanes are being moved slightly toward the sent of the roadway to give crews more space to finish construction on the southbound side of the roadway to build a shoulder. today is the 49ers anticipated home opener against the bears. it's also a test for the new levi stadium. crews have been working to get everything ready. fans need to be ready for the traffic and the heat. nick smith has the details. >> reporter: the wait is nearly over and the final security pieces are being put in place. levi stadium is welcoming more than 70,000 49ers fans to the

first regular season game in the new stadium. chris francis made the trip from rancho cucamonga. >> we got here earlier today. we'll be here until monday. i expect kaepernick to kick their butts as they did in the debut. >> reporter: the couple plans to head to avoid the traffic troubles that have been association with game day at levi stadium. after four sporting events, attempts to solve the parking and transportation woes have been mixed. long lines for trains, cars backing upside streets, signs warning of parking restrictions and confusing detours have left many frustrated drivers scratching their heads. tom johnson has never missed a home game. he's staying at the nearby hilton to avoid traffic issues. >> we're 25-year candlestick veterans. this is a walk in the park. >> reporter: the hotel put up these signs, but another concern may be the heat. >> tomorrow will be an evening game so i don't think it will be too bad. >> reporter: during the preseason game, there were a

number of heat-related calls. temperatures could reach 81 degrees. >> sunscreen and a baseball cap. a few beers and i won't care. >> reporter: the mayor is hoping that before fans head to the game, they will help children in need by having a bite with him through the pancake breakfast. >> all proceeds go to help our homeless children. it's hard to believe, but there's a lot of underresourced children that need a little bit of help. >> reporter: football and fundraising, what could be better than that. in santa clara, nick smith, abc 7 news. the parking lots at levi stadium will open at 1:30 this afternoon. gates open at 2:30. fans are asked to be in their seats by 5:00 p.m. for a special pregame show and other festivities. tickets are still available on the nfl ticket exchange and other resale websites. they are running between $160 to

a north bay city is homes to find crime fighting tools to its police force. they are encouraging anyone with a security camera to join a new registry. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> reporter: he says it's the best investment he's ever made. four security cameras inside and out watching over his restaurant 24/7.

the database reports everything the camera sees. cameras have come in handy three or four times when stuff behind the bar went missing. >> a couple people tried to steal bottles from the bar. >> he was on board with the plan for a registry of security cameras to help them fight crime faster wherever it happens. >> instead of spending an entire day walking a block, the first person i would go to is someone on this database, knock on their door, they show me evidence. >> reporter: the program is strictly voluntary. anyone with a camera can sign up. free mont and san jose already have similar registries. last january this security camera video identified a suspected serial arsonist in san jose leading to his arrest. but there are privacy concerns and how the information will be used. christine works at this shopping center. she says safety outweighs everything else. >> we have too many invasive things happening in our life.

but there's already cameras everywhere you go. >> reporter: the cameras are on duty. >> this can see who broke a window, did something bad. this can catch them. >> reporter: it's a small, safe city and they'd like to keep it that way. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. as part of his effort to raise money for a permanent korean war memorial in san francisco, korean war veteran wally stewart will make the swim this morning from alkatraz to san francisco. the race starts in the water near the island. it ends at the south end rolling club. in the water with wally where his grandson he made the swim five times back in the '70s and '80s.

it -- i put it over the top of my tiny sink and created a counter space and could position it next to the stove. >> and wood not plastic. >> wood. you need a 6-quart or larger pot. pastas, chilies and need a pot to transfer to the oven so you can use it to roast. then you want a deep stove with a lid. you want it to be shallow enough to cook an egg or steak or bugger, but deep enough to also do a chili. a garbage bowl. any bucket or thing you keep on the counter so when you're cooking, you don't have to run around the kitchen to the garbage, recycling bin, here and there throwing the scraps away. next thing you need in your kitchen is whatever relaxes you. something to put you in a good mood when you're cooking in the kitchen. for me that's music and a nice

italian bread. salt and pepper and then high temperature and cooking oil. a good olive oil that you can use on salads. and then a high temperature olive oil. so your oil. >> i was going to say, is it on the list? >> of course, lucky number seven. that's also good on your skin. you can put warm olive oil on your skin or hair. my mom gave herself pedicures with warm olive oil. >> even if you have a small kitchen, you can utilize the space and have the versatile pots and pans so you don't have to have a ton of things. >> watch rachael ray every weekday at 3:00 p.m. and it starts tomorrow.

i always use a big bowl when i make mine. >> i know you do. >> not. >> we're looking at another warm day. if you're waiting for the cooling trend, you're going to wait a couple more days. really significant cooling isn't going to get underway until the middle or end of the week when we get more potent weather system off the coast. but we have seen the temperatures peel back a little bit day by day. we were out of the triple digits. not showing much in the way of the low clouds, but we have it along the coast. a look if our east bay hills camera from the east bay. you'll notice it's nice and clear. 59 in san francisco. san jose, cloudy skies, 60 for you. morgan hill, typically cool in the 50s. half-moon bay, 57 degrees. five-mile visibility. the camera with temperatures in the upper 50s. at the airport, no delays.

it's clear in napa. by the delta, the wind has picked up. concorde and livermore, you're in the mid-and upper 90s. right now feeling good from 59 to 62. emeriville, cloudy skies. should be a nice day. oakland with low to mid-70s. high clouds, fog at the coast. seasonal at the shoreline with warm numbers returning inland but not as warm. the sea breeze around the bay and we'll look for more cooling tomorrow and by the middle of the week we'll be into the mid-80s inland. it's going to take some time though. it's all due to a system that we're waiting for to drop out of the pacific northwest. 11:00 today, strong risk of rip currents as that southerly swell and the southwest facing beaches from santa cruz getting the act for some difficult surf here. very dangerous here.

this will last right on through monday night. so the national weather service has allowed that to get into effect by later on this morning. so be advised of that. here's the area of low pressure. another one dropping out of the north. that will allow for the cooler weather. as for today, high pressure slowly nudging to the east. not quite out of here. we have another day of warm weather in san jose in the 80s. we'll look for the temperatures to drop off a few degrees tomorrow. stay right around 80 throughout the middle of the week. the computer models not really agrees by the end of the week, but we could see another warm-up into next weekend. so with the warm air, it's been in the 80s here. once again today, even by 5:30, look for a high temperature at levi stadium or a temperature of 82 degrees dropping through the 60s. plenty of sunshine. high clouds throughout the afternoon with 89. 84 in san jose.

on the peninsula, look for 80 today. redwood city, 63. so the numbers have stayed comfortable here in the upper 60s downtown. in the north bay, more mid-90s for you around clear lake today. 74 in oakland. 79 in union city. inland east bay, 93 in pittsburgh. 91 in pleasantton. the seven-day forecast still in the mid-90s today with temperatures dropping back tomorrow. but the dramatic cooldown back to the 80s, the middle of the week, a few extra clouds. that's fairly seasonal. it's just been warm consistently in our inland valleys. >> thank you, lisa. next starting off the school year on the right foot. we'll show you some very happy feet and tell you who made it possible.

meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, good morning. another 20 minutes until sunrise. it's starting out nice and clear in the inland valleys. the fog is just patchy here in the city. it's 60 in san jose. some clouds there. oakland, cloudy this morning at 61. we shaved off a few degrees yesterday. today still warm inland. the low clouds and fog setting up along the coast. a few higher clouds still forecasting some 90s inland. but we won't be in the upper 90s. low 80s in the south bay. and still some 90s well into so know ma. there's a system offshore that will enhance the an shore flow and bring 80s to the valleys. we'll have the details in the outlook coming up. the nfl is scrambling to explain its following what seems to be an epidemic of abusive behavior involving the players.

the latest incident involves the minnesota vikings adrian peterson. we have an update on his legal troubles. >> he's going to go all the way, touchdown! >> reporter: it may be quite some time before adrian peterson make s it to the end zone again. one of the nfl's top running backs is on the bench, out on bail and under indictment by a grand jury. he traveled from his minnesota home to turn himself in in this texas jail. the vikings star was released on $15,000 bond. his alleged crime, hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch here at his sprawling mansion outside houston causing injuries to butt tox, thigh and join the two doctors called child abuse. >> a grand jury looked at the injuries that were inflicted on the child and determined that that discipline was not reasonable. >> reporter: his lawyer says the incident involves using a switch to spank his son.

the same kind of discipline he experienced as a child growing up in east texas. >> adrian peterson said he was just disciplining his son and trying to give him a good old fashioned whooping at the time. obviously law enforcement differs. >> reporter: it's the latest storm in the season of discontent with the nfl still rocky u from the handling of ray rice's assault. the league has brought in former fbi director to investigate that case. also smoldering the conviction of july of greg hardy. he will play sunday without punishment from the league or the team. and the season is barely two weeks old. abc news, new york. >> former ravens star ray rice appeared in public yesterday, the first time since being suspended for abusing his wife. rice and his family watched a high school football game from the sidelines. in his hometown in new york just north of new york city. rice's wife was with him and their daughter there.

the nfl suspended rice last monday after a video surfaced of him knocking her out in a casino elevator earlier this year. nfl commissioner roger goodell will be the target of banners flying over league games today. they will say goodell must go, it's part of a campaign by a national women's advocacy organization called ultraviolet. members want goodell to resign because of his deceptive behavior in handling the ray rice incident and subsequent penalties. one of the banners will fly over levi stadium today. downtown napa's only grocery store and pharmacy is still closed because of damage done in the earthquake three weeks ago. safeway has not said if or when the store on clay and jefferson

streets will reopen. a company representative says the quake caused extensive damage that must first be evaluated. city inspectors have yellow tagged the building about 50 employees have gone to work at other safeway stores in the area including a second napa location on jefferson street. if you still have debris from the quake that you'd like to get rid of, time is running out. napa's quake debris dropoff site will close tonight at 10:00. the last remaining debris dropoff site at third will stay open for a few more days. the recycling is sorting the debris and materials. they will recycle as much as possible. and this morning on beyond the headlines, the recovery effort after the earthquake and how the cities of napa are coming back.

cheryl jennings talks to the mayors of both cities and looks at the support they are getting from the community. she hosts "beyond the headlines" this morning at 10:00 here on abc 7. some of the most beautiful women in the country will be competing tonight for the title of miss america. you can see it right here on abc 7. abc's tahman bradley reports it's been four days of grueling competition for those young women just to get to tonight's finals. >> reporter: tonight one of them will take the crown. last night the ladies were all smiles marching on the boardwalk even though their heels got wet. four days of competition showcasing their interview skills, talent and their swim suits and evening gowns. in the category of lifestyle and fitness in swim suit, miss florida, oklahoma and maryland emerged from the back. talent, miss ohio, a ventriloquist.

miss kentucky and miss pennsylvania. there was also the heart pounding interview with the judges. >> they asked about isis, foreign policy. it's such a big topic in the news now. it's a difficult question for anybody to answer. >> reporter: this year's pageant comes with stress. casinos are closing. for miss new jersey, it's personal. >> me being the daughter of two casino workers, people realize i'm a tangible person and they are capitalizing on that as a source to look for hope for the future. >> reporter: new this year a behind the scenes preshow on abc that's going to be great. 53 contestants but only one woman can wear the crown. tahman bradley, abc news, atlantic city.

a shelter in one of san francisco's tough neighborhoods have received a makeover compliments from students of a trendy design school. it's brightening the shelter as well as the residents's spirits. the fashion institute of design and merchandising is located in san francisco's union square just a few blocks from the tenderloin but worlds apart. until recently. >> we thought it was the paint color. we wanted to design the space differently and make it warm and welcoming. >> she's one of 17 students who transformed the family shelter where 22 families live with 32 children live. their before pictures show community spaces and the young designers went to work. they learned how to tile the kitchen by watching youtube

videos and painted the sitting room. he says the makeover has lifted his spirits. >> now that they have redesigned the kitchen, it means more like home. >> family cans stay up to six months. the case manager says a classy setting makes a difference. >> often people isolate during homelessness. people come down here, they talk small talk, share resources and extends our community. >> from the paints on the walls to the toys to for the children, everything was donated. >> it's nice to be able to help people as a way to restart their journey too. >> it took those students just two days over two weeks to make those changes that are going to be long lasting. we have a lingering weather pattern. >> sure with temperatures above average inland and this

afternoon we'll still see some 90s. live doppler 7 this morning with the low clouds and fog at ts coast. and it is starting to enter the bay in some parts. we're looking at clouds around mountain view. it shows a nice picture with the sun up in just a couple more minutes. the official sunrise and it's set for 7:19. that's 12 hours and 28 minutes of daylight. 60 in san jose. half-moon bay has low clouds at 57 degrees. and look at another nice shot over the bridge this morning with numbers in the mid-50s with the clear skies from napa to santa rosa. a pretty good breeze out towards the delta. it's clear in livermore, 62 degrees. so cloudy skies, high clouds and low clouds once again for the afternoon. the rain will be pretty seasonal with numbers in the 60s at the

coast there. but it will be above average inland again with more 90s again. the cooler pattern is slowly coming. we saw the numbers inland yesterday. we do have a beach hazard statement with the risk of strong rip currents today. all the way down to santa cruz as the southwest facing beaches get into a strong southerly flow today. we have been watching the systems cueing up. this will provide the cooling trend tomorrow where numbers come down another 5 to 7 degrees. we have had a breeze around the bay, the sea breeze, that will continue throughout the day today. keeping temperatures still in the upper 60s as well as monterey. you head inland and you're at 100 degrees in sacramento. heat advisory once again for san diego, los angeles, with humid air and temperatures well into the 80s and 90s at the beaches

here. and they are fighting that fire down in southern california. so a concern there of the dry conditions continue. there's that system offshore that will bring extra cloud cover for the north coast. maybe some rain there. but for the bay area, we continue our dry stretch. a nice day today nonetheless at at&t park. temperatures in the mid-60s at 1:00. we'll take you across the bay into oakland. numbers in the low to mid-70s through the afternoon. so throughout the day today with the few high clouds, upper 70s. 83 in napa. morgan hill, 90. the seven-day forecast with numbers in the 90s again today. still above average, but slightly cooler and tomorrow with one of the sea breeze, we'll see the temperatures just at 90 inland. 80 around the bay. partly cloudy by the middle of

the week. that's that incoming system that could bring some rain to the far north coast. it will bring. cooler temperatures midweek. we could have a warm-up next weekend. >> so we'll see. things are changing. autumn is on the horizon. we have that to look forward to. let's check out sports. another big day around the bay area today. the raiders kick off their home opener against the texans at 1:25. and the giants will send them to the mound against kershaw at at&t park. the first pitch, 1:05. last night the dodgers routed the giants with first place on the line. here's our sports anchor with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, the giant hs a chance to lock up the dodgers in

a tie in the national league west. instead they gave up a season-high 17 runs. benjamin brat welcomed the giants. matt kemp up and down to the corner for a double. gave up six runs on eight hits. 3-0, dodgers. the second, faired no better. down the line to left. another double for the dodgers slugger. 6-0 dodgers. now 9-0 in the fourth. crushes another change-up deep into the seats in left. made it 10-0. the dodgers route the giants 17-0. they go up two games on the gmen in the west. the a's are in a free fall clinging to a half a game lead, but facing the mariners in seattle.
