but this is the fourth major event to be held here at levi's stadium, and a lot of the traffic wrinkles fans encountered at the past events seemed to have been ironed out for today's event. traffic heading into the stadium was uneventful. plenty of fans showed up early to pack into the dream lot, the amusement park is closed this game day. this is where a sprawling tailgating village spouted up hours before the game. >> this is way better than the blue aisle. last time it was crazy. this is perfect. the way it's going, it's awesome. reporter: in this area, in this sea of red jerseys, everyone is excited about the start of the season, but does come as the 49ers and nfl are embroiled in an ongoing controversy over domestic violence. ray mcdonald was arrested for felony domestic violence against

his pregnant fiancee. >> do you think mcdonald should be playing, given what we know about the case? >> i don't think so, no. >> that's a tough question. you know, i don't know that would say about that. >> and despite the controversy, you can see that the stadium is packed. the rafters, all the way up. it is a huge sea of red jerseys, kickoff here is in just a little bit -- less than half an hour and you can bate lot of people are trying to find their seats right about now. reporting live, abc7 news. >> a new demand today to sideline ray mcdonald. the lieutenant governor, and his filmmaker wife released a statement today say, quote, we strongly urge the 49ers organization we grew up revering to do the right thing, right now, and bench ray mcdonald pending the outcome of his

felony domestic violence investigation. ray mcdonald is not the only player dealing with issues. the carolina panthers placed greg hardy on the inactive list. he was convicted in july of assaulting and threatening his then-ex-girlfriend. the baltimore ravens released ray rice and the nfl suspended him indifferent enough after a video showed him punching his now-wife in february. adrian peterson of the minnesota vikings is on the bench and out of jail after being charged with child abuse. >> our game day coverage continues with larry beil. the image problem seems to be growing. >> this has been a very rough week for the nfl in the news, with the names you just mentioned. these are star player in some case, with ray rice, adrian peterson and greg hardy, and ray mcdonald will play tonight for the 49ers, though he remains

under investigation for domestic violence. the 49ers maintaining their stance that ray macdonald deserves to right to due process, and until the legal system decided his fate he is going to play. each team in the league has the discretion to decide how they want to handle these situations. while the nfl -- with the nfl launching an investigation into the rice scandal, some think perhaps the league should institute a standard procedure so a misdemeanor charge would be run specific type of discipline and felonies have harsher discipline so on and so forth. before this week the perfect man to address these kinds of issues would be the commissioner, roger goodell. but goodell is at the center of the ray rice controversy, and con -- conspicuous by his absence help was scheduled to appear at the opening ceremony but today came the word that goodell would not be coming to

kicked off this morning at 8:30, five hours before kickoff and the game. hundreds of the raider faithful showed off their black and silver pride. the event featured fun events for the kids. now to developing news. a richmond police officer shot and killed a man. this is the first deadly officer-involved shooting in the city. it happened this morning at uncle sam's liquors. we spoke with the man's family members. reporter: family members of 24-year-old petey perez are very upset. they say he was unarmed and wonder why a taser wasn't used instead. police say he assaulted the officer and reached for his gun. >> in shock. i still don't believe it. reporter: the grandparents of 24-year-old richards perez, known as petey, are struggling

to understand why a police officer shot and killed their grandson. >> petey didn't have a gun. a knife. nothing. >> perez was outside uncle sam's liquors when just after midnight, a police officer arrived to do a routine check. police say perez was intoxicated, acting aggressive and would not sit down when ordered. >> turned into a physical fight that went on for almost a minute, where the officer felt the suspect grabbing his gun trying to pull his holster. reporter: the officer shot him three times. part of the incident was on a surveillance camera. >> nobody going to look at a cop the same way, trying to protect and serve. everybody look at them like they taking advantage of their badge. >> the officer, six--year veteran, is now on paid administrative leave. a different officer arrived perez for dui the night before. something his grandfather discussed with him during their final conversation.

>> we were talking about his behavior, why he drinks. >> the contra costa county district attorney's office is investigating the shooting. >> fire investigators in santa rosa believe a house fire that killed a woman was accidental. firefighters say they had difficulty getting into the home last night due large amount of testimonies blocking doors and -- items blocking doors and windows. firefightersed that crawl over the top of stored items to fight the flames. a deck collapsed at a home in the oakland hills, injuring ten people. it happened last night on outlook avenue. three of the victims suffered serious injuries, including broken legs. officials are treating the case as an accident. ahead, roadwork that could throw the morning commute nor a curve. the bay area facing a possible public transit strike as well.

a coughing fit. chp officers say shifting of the crates caused the driver to lose control, spilling the grapes on the highway. >> just that the grapes are very quiet, when they get run over by a car, they turn sticky and have to use water. >> caltrans planned to come out and dry-sweep the area as well as a precaution. no one was hurt. a construction project on the golden gate bridge could cause problems for commuters tomorrow morning. crews are re-aligning the southbound lanes near the toll plaza. you can see in this illustration from the presidio parkway the former lane configuration is in red. the lanes are being moved slightly toward the center of the roadway to give construction crews more space to build a shoulder. the last time caltrans changed the bridge approach there was a lot of confusion.

we'll have a report tomorrow morning at 4:30. the golden gate bridge labor coalition says it will strike next week if no agreement is reached with the golden gate highway and transportation district tomorrow. a strike would mean all golden gate transit, ferry, and bus service's shut down, leavings thousands of commuters to find alternate transportation. unions are opposing a district proposal that would increase employees' healthcare premiums. >> another mountain lion sighting in the bay area. the two-fold fight for fire crews battling a fire in southern california. >> looking outside, the view here from the sutro tower camera, some weather changes coming this week. the

san mateo county sheriff's deputies are investigating a mountain lion sighting in portola valley last night. residents spotted a cat in their backyard around 11:00 p.m. authorities killed a 65-pound male cat on wednesday in santa clara county. days earlier the animal attacked a six-year-old boy who was hiking with his family. >> southern california firefighterrers dealing with extremely rugged terrain and a hot day as they battle a wildfire near cleveland national forest. the fire broke out friday in orange county's silverado canyon. more than 200 homes remain evacuated. more than 1,000 firefighters are on the job there. six suffered minor injuries. many of them heat-related with
