and a very good monday morning. i'm dan clear ler alongside reena ninan. we begin with breaking news. weather extremes. wildfires growing over night in california. a powerful hurricane is coming ashore. >> that's right. hurricane odile bearing down on popular tourist areas. could threaten the u.s. within days. hurricane odile made land fall early this morning near the resort area of cabo san lucas. >> no, no, no, whoa! >> reporter: the national hurricane center in miami estimated the winds at 125 miles per hour. odile is churning up deadly surf and torrential rain. it's also triggered mass evacuations. mexican authorities have set up emergency shelters to hold up to

30,000 people. meantime, much further north, wildfires. fueled by blistering heat and drought-stricken brush are burning out of control in parts of california. near yosemite national park, the courtney fire has ripped through more than 300 acres, destroying 21 homes and threatening hundreds of other structures. >> we're see record low fuel mois churs. all the fuels are readily available to burn. as we all know in the valley, we have 100-degree temperatures we have been experiencing all week. they're aiding in the spread of the fire along with the winds we're getting. >> reporter: more than 1,000 people have been evacuated. that fire is only about 20% con tand. meantime, about 150 miles north, the king fire has grown to about 2500 acres in el dorado county. triggering manned doir evacuations. >> scary. we have our trailers hooked up

i am standing on southbound 880. it is shut down. look at the aftermath. there is the shell of a burned out car and all emergency vehicles taking up the lanes as they try to get the people out of the cars and to the hospital. this is what it looks after the crash. a big rig was involved. several other cars then crashed. we don't know how many. alameda fire is reporting nine people were injured and taken to hospitals three in critical. northbound and southbound lanes are shut down in san lenadro. they will not be open for a while. here is a picture of the backup, the impact it is having. this is an area to avoid. this is how it looks. it will be tough to get through. traffic is diverted norbo
