abc7 news begins with breaking news. interstate 880 is shut down after a fiery accidents with more than a dozen cars with helicopters and fires and the commute off to a horrific star. >> nine patients have been taken to local hospitals, three critical. >> this is happening in san lenadro with amy hollyfield talking to first responders and joins us. amy? >> they paying progress and they have towed all of the cars out of here and you can see emergency vehicles and clean up crews. they are aiming to get two southbound lanes open in the next few minutes. >> cars were on fire and people needed help and investigators say an s.u.v. was involved in a

collision on the southbound side of 880 in san lenadro and a big rig approaching tried to avoid the accident and made an evasive action but lost criminal -- control and smashed through a dividing ball. 13 vehicles were involved in the chain reaction collision, a huge accident seen so investigators were forced to shut down 880 in both directions. >> it was a dramatic move but though say this was a huge accident and they had no choice. they have been shut down since the accident happened a little after 3:00 this morning. though had to make way for a helicopter to severely injured victim. no fatalities have been reported but people on the scene have not

heard updates on how the victims are doing only that three were in critical condition. we want to show you a picture of the backup and it is dramatic and people are sitting still on the highway and you are advised to avoid this area altogether. we are southbound marina boulevard where you will be diverted and you will be moved off of 880 and not allowed to go further. northbound you will not get further than washington avenue where they are taking people of 50 of the freeway. they are making progress out here and they are hopping to have all of the southbound lanes open by 6:45 with northbound taking longer and they are aiming for 7:45 and these just is. it could change. there is a lot of debris to sweep up and they kept it in mind for the next day to be safe and cautious and there are a lot

of car pieces and slick spots from the oil so this is an area to be cautious in for the nbc day. that is good advise but had there is another fly in the ointment the link between 238, there is an accident blocking the lanes. this isç a picture from sky 7 over 238 in the northbound direction and you can see the headlights at a standstill and that is because they are trying to bottlenecks remark because of a two-car crash. we now have two or three lanes blocked off and this is main artery, with another parking lot here as a result. so the drive from castro valley is at least five miles of backup approaching 880. that delay is going to be around at least for another several

lenadro. they are not allowing cars to take northbound 880 and are shutting off access. the backup is five miles and probably more. that was a few minutes ago. we have more than five mills headed out castro valley. you are advised strongly to use 580 instead so any traffic that continues northbound 238 to 880 they are forcing you to 9 southbound. no traffic is allowed north 880. that will be shut down until 7:45 while the clean up continues. we will possibly have one lane re-opening southbound in a matter of a few minutes. we are looking at heavy delays pushing out of oakland and into san lenadro so that is the alternate if both directions. >> i will give you the

updates. southbound, where this accident originally took place at 3:00, we have one lane re-opening shortly. we still have all lanes shut down northbound and southbound at the marina boulevard where track is diverted 50 of southbound 880 but we do have a sweeper train coming through to clean up debris. one lane will be re-opened shortly southbound 880 but the northbound lanes will be blocked off until 7:45 traffic is squeezing by out of castro valley. and c.h.p. has shut down the transition road from northbound 238 to northbound 880 and all traffic sent to southbound 880 so use a 80 today and here are live pictures, from sky 7 h.d. we are looking toward the nimitz and we still have emergency

crews on the scene and they toed off the cars involved but people were taken to the hospital. this is no word on fatalities but we have serious injuries. back to our maps i want to show you other problems in the bay area with an accident that just cleared that left us with 11 miles of backup, southbound 680, on the breaks at 33 miles per hour is the top speed. the macarthur maze is slow from berkeley and when you get to the bay bridge we will have a 20-minute delay into the city and coming in from daly city, watch out for northbound highway 101, there is an accident there blocking one lane. good morning, everyone, we will look at our east bay hills camera, with one of the few areas without cloud cover and it is hot and hazy headed into the san ramon valley. to the south, the clouds are

the commute is a huge mess. good morning, thanks for joining us. on 880 in san lenadro we live coverage with leyla gulen monitoring the backup but amy hollyfield is on the scene. amy? yes, we are standing on the northbound side of interstate 880 and they are focusing on the center divider. there is a big hole there they have to repair before they can let all of the traffic come through. they close to were on some lanes of traffic in the next few minutes on the southbound side but they will keep the lanes shut down while it is getting fixed and though want to keep the crews safe. they have come a long way. look what they were dealing with, cars on fire and people needed help.

in was after 3:00 this morning on 880 in san lenadro by the outlet shopping center. a s.u.v. got into a collision although they do not know why. it was going southbound. a big rig saw it in the path and tried to avoid it, swerved and lost criminal. and that crashed through the have divider creating the huge hole. the big rig was in northbound traffic and several cars crashed and investigators give me a different answer when i asked how many cars were involved. they have-to-ed so many -- they have so far, they think, towed away 11 cars. >> it is uncommon to be shut down in both directions there is a lot debris and fuel in the road. if you be traveling 880 the next day, you need to be careful because of the road conditions.

>> they had to get a helicopter here to rescue one of the victims and transport that victim. they took nine people out of the here either by ambulance or helicopter, three in critical condition. it was lick a movie scene with helicopters, and fires and people yelling and screaming and running from the scene. now look at the backup, it is bad. if you headed north bound at washington boulevard you are taken 50 of the freeway and in the southbound detection they taking cars off at marina boulevard. this is an area to avoid. they are making progress but it will take a while to clear out the backup. at 6:40 they estimating they will open all but one of the southbound lanes and it will be a little longer, between 7:00 or possibly 8:00 until though get the nobody lanes opened. we will keep you posted. the best advise is not to come

this is because of a sig-alert on the nimitz that happened at 3:00 this morning and it was when a big rag was traveling southbound and jumped the center divider into north lane. we had 13 vehicles involved and multiple injuries, some very serious and everyone has been taken to an area hospital. we have a complete shut down on the nobody side and it is traffic that is stuck on the freeway unable to get off or turn around. now we have folks that are getting itchy feet and want to stretch their legs. it is not advised if issue in a vehicle next to the center divider. if you are in the right hand lane you are safer but, still, do not get out of the freeway and hang out there. understandably, people are getting restless. >> thank you. all morning it is abc 7 news now with weather and traffic
