and a very good tuesday morning, everyone, i'm dan kloeffler. >> and i'm reena ninan. we begin with the raging infernos in california. a dozen major wildfires tearing across state this morning, fueled by powerful winds and stifling heat. >> the newest fire broke out near the oregon border, forcing half of one town to evacuate and torching every home in its path. but from there, a little farther south, the big worry, rain. and lots of it. all from the remnants of hurricane odile. >> since slamming into cabo san lucas sunday night, it's weakened into a tropical storm and heading towards the southwestern u.s. >> it's cut a path of destruction across baja, california, the 125 mile an hour winds leveling just about everything in its path. the authorities are overwhelmed with overflowing emergency shelters and now looting.

there are no reports of deaths or serious injuries. >> but odile is still packing a punch as it takes direct aim on flood-ravaged arizona. in phoenix, residents are stacking sandbags. by the time odile hits the u.s., it's expected to have winds of 40 miles an hour and dump up to a foot of rain in its path. >> even ahead of odile's arrival, the south can expect more heavy rain. >> accuweather's jim dickey joins us now. >> good morning. hot on the southwest, many spots with records on monday, and running at them once again here today. 101 in fresno, 98 in phoenix. slightly cooler. that's the continued cloud cover as odile weakness heading to the baja, california, peninsula, but spreading deep moisture in. heavy rain much like with norberg just a week or two ago.

against an i.s.i.s. target south of baghdad, aiding security forces that have come under attack. and the first time that the military acted under president obama's new ordered expanding air strikes. before it was only to protect u.s. facilities and support humanitarian efforts. the strike comes as i.s.i.s. continues its reign of terror. the militants have selected their next victim, 47-year-old british aid worker allen henning. one of at least five western hostages still being held. >> we have neither the intelligence nor the access to these hostages to be able to rescue them. >> reporter: the u.s. is trying to build international support. one nation that won't be part of the coalition, iran. their leader rejected the u.s. request to join the fight saying america has dirty intentions in the region. the white house is waiting for congress to authorize president obama's plan to arm and train moderate syrian rebels. republican lawmakers appear to be on board.

statement last night responding to a report from a tv station in houston. that report claimed peterson allegedly injured a second son of his while disciplining him last june. peterson's attorney called that, quote, simply not true. the vikings reinstated peterson yesterday as the legal process in the original child abuse case plays out in court. one company waiting for the process to play out is the radisson hotel chain. it's suspended its sponsorship of the vikings in response so the case. radisson will look at the facts and circumstances of the situation. and the vikings organization says it will respectfully honor their wishes. and the nfl has appointed three women to serve as senior advisers. one is a former top sex crimes prosecutor in new york city. nfl commissioner roger goodell says they will help lead and shape the nfl's policies. president obama has bestowed two vietnam veterans with the

. welcome back on this tuesday morning, everyone. apple says its iphone 6 preorders set a record. it sold 4 million in just 24 hours. that is double the preorders for the iphone 5 two years ago. that's more of the new models than apple has ready to ship. some of those rushed to websites to get the 6 will get them friday, but many others won't see them until october. macy's and bloomingdales are testing same day delivery. using 50 stores as fulfillment centers, the drivers pick up the merchandise at the stores and deliver within 14 miles. macy's hasn't decided how much the service will cost, but says it will be competitive.

the olive garden is defending the unlimited bread sticks policy. it didn't come from the group of health, but it's coming from investors who say it's worried about how it runs. they say it's just, quote, italian generosity. there was a surge in soft drink sales yesterday, and then it was over. and there were a limited number of surge cans on amazon and then gone. surge was the answer to pepsi's mountain due, but discontinued in 2001. fans have been calling for the return. and a free cup of coffee for mcdonalds during the breakfast, and no purchase is necessary. although they have the lion's share of the breakfast market, they are facing competition from that cobell. >> that's a nice perk,

a hunting rifle, killing one and injuring the other. he might have formal firearms training and an ongoing issue with laumt. and a man lost at sea for 31 hours is home. 37-year-old joey trevino was fishing with two other men when their boat took on water. they threw on their life jackets, abandoned ship, but trevino was separated from his uncle and friends who were rescued. he describes in detail the time alone in the water. >> you're looking at the clouds, looking at whatever to try to keep you focused. talking to my wife, my kids. hopefully they felt me talking to them, talking to my sisters. >> fishermen spotted him. and when he was losing faith, two poor poiss nudged him.

>> they have the fire knocked out but there is a lot smoke at the lumber yesterday. firefighters will be here for a while to make sure all fire is out. this was a very big fire. check out the pictures, huge flames engulf will wood pallets. first call was before 2:00 a.m. and then a second alarm. firefighters say the number yard next door was not impacted but they do not know the name of the yard that was burned. several people were in the auto body shot neck door and the cars were exposed to the flights but they were able to stop the fire from causing any real damage. the san jose police have blocked off this area including the overpass of 101. firefighters expect to be here
