and from the nfl, adrian peterson apologizing after he was charged with child abuse. a lot of fans surprised he will be back on the field this weekend. >> yeah, a lot to talk about there. but now, let's get to the wildfires out west. 18 in three states. california, oregon, and washington. and aditi roy is in california this morning. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, george. i'm standing on the steps of what was once a church in the heart of town. it's barely are ek nizabrecogni. this small town is under siege from the wildfire. this morning, a new fire in northern california, decimated at least 100 homes and a church here in the town of weed. and winds fanning the flames toward even more. this wall of smoke showing just how far and wide it is reaching. the fire breaking out monday afternoon, chewing through at least 350 acres overnight, closing major interstates, forcing 1500 residents to evacuate. >> we packed all of our pictures and anything that we could never get back. >> reporter: this fire near the

border of oregon, just one of 18 roaring across the northwest. two major raging wildfires to the north of weed burning out of control in oregon. crews outside of portland outmatched, helicopters barely visible through heavy smoke, the fire growing to more than 2300 acres. the air quality reaching unhealthful levels. in california, at least 11 fires burning. in el dorado county, emergency shelters being deployed with the flames rushing toward firefighters. planes dropping a half a mile of retardant on the fog to no avail. >> it was -- it was pretty scary. >> reporter: and outside of yosemite, evacuated residents wait and wonder. probably a lot of memories here. >> tons of memories. you know? yeah, tons of memories. >> reporter: the cross and the church bell on its side among the few thinks left in tact here at the church in weed. the fire raced through town,

fueled o by winds of up to 40 miles an hour. the blaze is now 15% contained. >> a long way to go. aditi, thank you very much. now to the severe flooding threatening the southwest. hurricane odile leaving a path of destruction in its wake. and the southwest preparing for the torrential rain. ginger, you're back from that region. you were in the tucson area. >> i was just in tucson. and i'm telling you, these people are very concerned. we just did this last week. it's like deja vu. but look what we're looking at. and cabo san lucas, in a hotel, it's a disaster. along baja. we know that happened. and odile, still a tropical storm, working its way through the gulf of california. and throwing up clouds into parts of the southwest. let me tell you, this is about to be a flash flooding disaster. cabo san lucas is a wreck this morning. odile shredding the peninsula with 125-mile-per-hour winds. >> the storm was intense. it wasn't the greatest way to spend our honeymoon.

>> reporter: that area, lined with resorts where celebrities and so many of us vacation, now sengd post cards of catastrophe. tied for the worst storm to hit cabo ever. many are without power, roads impassable, this hilton hotel, filled with debris. and look at this, people looting. already taking advantage inside the devastation. the surge of moisture from odile is now headed straight for the southwest. >> got to put them somewhere to stop water from coming in. >> reporter: flood-weary folks in phoenix pitching in with sand bags. >> create an emergency contact list of your family, employees, insurance, or other service companies. >> reporter: the worry? a dangerous case of deja vu. remember the flash flooding last week? this frightening scene as the wash swallows this van in a highway. >> that guy just got swept up in the water. >> reporter: all fueled by remnants of norbert. and now we have odile. closer and more powerful. and remember, odile did drop some 20 inches of rain.

and look where it goes, as the track takes it right into arizona in the coming days. the worst of the rain wednesday into thursday, flash flood watches from california to el paso there. phoenix and tucson included. this is a lot of rain, 5 to 7 inches in the green area. anywhere in here could see local flash flooding. and that is the potential for -- let me tell you, if you have this and you're in the southwest right now, and wednesday and thursday you have plans to drive somewhere, take this time and plan ahead. all it takes it just staying home for a couple hours. flash is flash. it's there and gone in a moment. >> all right, thank you, ginger for that. >> good advice there. to the fight against ebola, president obama heading to the centers for disease control in atlanta this afternoon, announcing a dramatic expansion of american aid to help stop the outbreak. calling the effort a national security priority. and dr. richard besser has been on the ground in africa. you were calling for the president to call in the

military. it's exactly what is happening here. >> this is important and hopefully get this under control. the u.s. is setting up a command center in liberia, having a general in charge. sending as many as 3,000 troops over there to work. engineers to help build treatment centers. a training center to train as many as 500 health care workers every week. >> more troops than are in iraq. there's something missing, not american doctors treating patients directly. >> this is what worries me. when this outbreak started, there were only 50 doctors in all of liberia. they're saying they're going train 500 health care workers. where are they coming from if they're not americans? that's the key part. you have to treat patients so that they'll come into the treatment center and get out of the community. >> president obama calling it a national security priority, those are very strong words. explain why it is. >> an unstable west africa is dangerous for the u.s. but the longer this virus is out there circulating, the more chance it has to mutate. right now, it's very hard to pick this up. you have to be in direct contact with a patient. but if the virus changes and can

battles the abuse charge against him. >> i understand this is a very difficult -- difficult thing to handle. but i also -- we feel strongly as an organization that this is disciplining in a child. >> reporter: peterson speaking out for the first time since the scandal began, posting on twitter monday, reading in part, i'm not a perfect parent. but i am, without a doubt, not a child abuser. and no one can understand the hurt that i feel for my son and for the harm i caused him. peterson raises the stakes, saying the discipline he received as a child helped him get to the nfl. i have always believed that the way my parents disciplined me has a great deal to do with the success i have enjoyed as a man. overnight, a houston tv station reporting that he was accused in a separate incident involving a different son, after the boy allegedly suffered a head wound while peterson disciplined him. peterson's attorney telling us

the allegation of another investigation is simply not true. it's not a new allegation, it's one that is unsubstantiated and nothing came from it. peterson, back in minnesota, returns to team practices immediately. monday, the vikings acknowledging they were made aware of an allegation from 2013 in which authorities took no action. and now the league appointing four women, including a vice president of social responsibility, to oversee its domestic violence efforts. and three senior advisers, including a former head of the manhattan sex crimes unit. and in a memo, goodell saying they will help lead and shape the nfl's policies and programs relating to domestic violence and sexual assault. >> all eyes are on roger goodell. and they should be. and he's made a lot of missteps in the past. and he has an opportunity now to try to correct those. >> reporter: and overnight, a major sponsor taking action. the radisson, who's name was featured prominently behind the vikings team official announcing peterson's return, said in a statement they take this matter

very seriously and are suspending, and this is a quote, their sponsorship with the team while they evaluate the facts and circumstances. they are the first sponsor to back way from the nfl since these controversies began. >> interesting to see if there are others that take that same route. thank you very much. we want to know what you think. was adrian peterson's apology enough? tweet us with the hash tag socialsquare. now to amy with more stories. good morning, amy. good morning, robin. breaking news. the taliban claiming responsibility for a suicide car bombing that killed three foreign troops. no word how many may have been americans. the attacker was targeting a nato convoy. 20 other troops and civilians were injured. and in iraq, the u.s. military took first action under president obama's new rules of engagement against the militant group isis. u.s. officials confirming they have launched an air strike against enemy fighters south of baghdad at the request of iraqi forces who had come under attack there.

until now, air strikes were conducted only to protect american facilities and support humanitarian efforts. back here at home, new details in the manhunt for the shooter who ambushed two pennsylvania state troopers. investigators believe the gunman was a calculated killer, finding the right hiding spot after fatally shooting one trooper and critically wounding another. they say he had a grudge against police and likely had military or law enforcement training. the reward has been raised to $75,000. a baltimore police officer is under investigation after being caught on this video repeatedly punching a suspect. the officer says he feared for his safety. charges against the suspect were later dropped. and he is now suing for $5 million. some tense moments on this highway in dallas. construction equipment, look at that, teetering over the edge after a crash. a worker then had to be carefully lowered off the side of the overpass to stabilize the equipment so it would not fall

on to the road below. no one was injured. a stunt at this air show along the pacific coast went horribly wrong. see the pilot fly by the beach, head into the sky and perform a loop. then he appears to lose control, skimming the water, and then crashing in the ocean off the coast of guatemala. he is okay. we're thankful for that, but his plane was destroyed. and another thriller on "monday night football." the eagles mounting a dramatic comeback. rallying from 14 points behind last night against the colts. it all came down to the final seconds. the eagles nailing a 36-yard field goal to win 30-27. and finally, imagine walking out to the backyard swimming pool. it's hot outside. you want to take a dip. and then you realize it's occupied by this guy. yeah, a black bear needed to beat the heat in california. and what better place than a pool conveniently located near trash bins for a snack. it was a poolside getaway for

the sophomore was last heard from around 1:00 a.m. saturday morning when she texted friends that she was on her way to a party. police in charlottesville, virginia, bringing out a blood hound to search a heavily wooded area near the campus. but this morning, there are still no leads in the search. graham's apartment is offcampus. according to police, she and other students were drinking heavily that night. she was at a pizza joint at 11:00 p.m. and then she and a classmate headed to another party. leaving alone at 12:15, appears to be heading home. but she may have changed her mind, texting friends at another party saying she was on her way but was lost. she never made it. >> checking the cell phone records, computer, bank accounts. anything we can possibly do. >> reporter: with more than 21,000 students here just starting the school year, the university's president is calling on the entire campus for help. we are hopeful someone will come forward soon with information. graham's friend, katie, said that graham, a native of

england, was always especially kind to strangers. >> hannah was always good at making friends. she was one of the first to talk to you and so friendly and outgoing. >> reporter: graham's parents are on campus helping authorities in the search. her parents live in suburban d.c. they are very upset about this and not speaking about in this morning. robin? >> that's understandable. thank you. and michael, you have a terrifying story on the highway for us. >> we do, robin. that's right. a wild police chase caught on camera. an intoxicated driver going the wrong way. how one officer risked his life to stop the driver. and what he didn't know was that there were two young kids in the car. an officer's dramatic act of heroism all caught on tape. >> he's in southbound. going north. >> reporter: watch as this apparently intoxicated driver barrels the wrong way down this texas highway with two small children in the car. >> speeds at 100. >> reporter: but before the driver collides with oncoming

traffic, sergeant gary sharp steps in, driving his cruiser directly into the speeding vehicle's path. >> knowing that this guy is reckless and a danger that he was, he needed to be stopped. some way or another. >> reporter: sharpen even shouting to other drivers to clear out. >> hey! hey! >> reporter: his game of chicken worked. the wrong-way driver slamming his brakes just feet before impact. >> he turned around. and he's going south. >> reporter: before leading officers on a high-speed pursuit through gas stations and parking lots, even testing fate against traffic again. >> eastbound on the westbound lane. >> reporter: authorities finally are able to stop and arrest the 25-year-old driver. the children in the car, miraculously, uninjured. >> saving the lives of the innocent is what officers do. those people were complete strangers to me. >> reporter: sergeant sharpen's

that's how he started his opening statement in the case against high ly regarded cancer researcher ana maria gonzalez-angulo. >> she became obsessed with him and wanting him. >> reporter: the him is her one-time lover, dr. george blumenschein, also a doctor in houston. prosecutors say last year, dr. gonzalez spiked his coffee with a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze, trying to convince him it was splenda. >> she convinces him to try this special colombian coffee. >> reporter: they say she did it because he chose his long-time girlfriend over her. she pleaded not guilty. and her attorneys say there is no real evidence that blumenschein was even poisoned, much less that gonzalez did it. >> what they are offering you is little more than guesswork. we don't guess people into felony convictions. >> reporter: but there's no

guessing about this. blumenschein's kidneys failed. he's still sick and blamed that coffee concoction. he's expected to be the star witness against his former lover. he taped recordings of her. in recordings he has, she brags that back home she had people assassinated and takes care of things the colombian way. monday, the jury heard from vráh&eading cancer doctors. they were prosecution witnesses but may have helped the defense. beloved by her patients. >> very compassionate. and had great patient relationships. >> reporter: but soon, the jury will decide if this woman who vç dedicated her life to healing people is also capable of poisoning one.,á]&=ióq)ñ2%%hk=có for "goo" ioñ,&l/amjuja1+e-vp'

both sides filing lawsuits about whether "blurred lines" is a ripoff of gay's 1977 hit "got to give it up." ♪ >> one of my favorites of all time is marvin gaye's "gotta give it up." we tried to get a groove going. and we really wrote the whole song in about half an hour. >> reporter: that vh1 interview was a lie, he said under oath.

in his sensational april deposition just released by the gaye clan's lawyers, not only was he high on painkillers and drunk when he recorded "blurred lines" in the studio, he was during interviews like that one. i do generally remember trying to sell the public on the fact that "blurred lines" was my idea in some way. >> he looked like the next big superstar. but the fact he didn't actually write his biggest song. what is he going to point to now? >> reporter: in the deposition, he claimed he was now off the painkillers. and of the song? it became a huge hit, and i wanted credit. the reality is, pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song. in his own deposition, williams claims the song is held together by robin thicke's voice. the dispute over whether "blurred lines" is really a marvin gaye ripoff is due in court february of next year. for "good morning america," nick watt, abc news, los angeles. >> we're going to bring in our

dan abrams right now. i want to read a statement from robin thicke's lawyer. robin's moment of personal vulnerability is being exploited in the hope of diverting the attention from the obvious weakness of their legal claim. that is the claim of marvin gaye's family. >> they had to know this was going to become public. this is a civil lawsuit. they had to know this statement was going to get out. and on the one hand, from a sort of p.r. perspective, it's terrible for robin thicke. he's saying i didn't write my biggest song ever. i'm now admitting that. and yet, as a legal matter, it's really important. he was out there in numerous interviews saying marvin gaye inspired me. pharrell and i sat down. we cranked out this song in half an hour, hour and a half, whatever the amount of time. that's really problematic for his case. so now he's trying to distance himself from that statement. he's trying to say, a, i was on drugs when i said it. and b, i didn't write the song anyway, so ignore what i said.

good morning, i'm kristen sze. many of you may have seen the smoke from a car fire in hayward. that car was still smoking when sky 7 hd came over the scene. this is on industrial parkway. you can see one car was just destroyed. three more were scorched. all the cars were on a trailer that usually carries new vehicles to a dealer. firefighters put out the flames in quick order but the cause is still under investigation. so how's your morning commute looking this morning? a lot better than yesterday. >> yeah, that fire caused some spectators earlier but we're slow on the southbound side of the nimitz. that's where we have tons of congestion as you make it into fremont. northbound side we do have some car parts in lanes. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. that drive slowing down just a bit but it's a beautiful one, nice and clear.
