live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. san jose fire investigators are looking into who or what started the roaring fire at a recycling yard this morning. thanks for joining us. >> investigators looked at other businesses, one of which has incredible video the moment the blaze was sparked. matt? as bad as this was, and it was bad, it could have been worse. check out the tans that were dragged across the street by firefighters. next door is a1 lumber, a yard.

the flames came close but did not spread. >> a watery mess remains behind off oakland road in san jose as firefighters spent hours making sure no spark could survive. this was the scene this morning with a video from san jose fire department photographer craig rose. flames shot 35 to 45' high. firefighters surrounded the flames and shooting waters on hundreds of pallets. surveillace camera at the auto body and repair captured the first flames. the clock on the surveillance video is ten minutes fast so before 2:00 a.m. they grew better and an employee starting spraying water but it was too late they were too much for a garden hose. >> it was hard to control the fire. it is wood. it is dry wood.

it goes fast. i was afraid the flame would get into my shot. several shops are near the recycling industry and the cars were exposed to the heat. the owner of the repair shop believes two dozen cars were damaged. payment was bubbled and windows exploded. metal melted. thed if news? no one was injured. firefighters and business owners are dealing with what is left behind. >> we will use a back hoe and pull up the debris. there will be an extensive overhaul operation. >> you will be here a long-term? >> yes. >> they must have just found a hotspot because they turned on the hose and were spraying the pallets again. it could be a week before the recycling company re-opens. a truck loaded with mercedes ready for auction burned this morning and those cars are

destroyed. this is the scene at auction yard along industrial parkway in hair. the driver was in the cab sleeping when the fair starts in the engine compartment before 7:00. the fire spread as you can see to two trucks. he escaped. firefighters put out the flames in 15 minutes but the cars were destroyed. >> residents are grappling with devastation left by a fast- moving fire that ripped through a small town which now is described as "half ripped out." nick? >> we have been watching this all day with the evacuation orders in place damaging 100 homes yesterday in a few hours and 400 are evacuated today. >> the elementary schools are closed with the hallway showing burned doors and charred decks and melted chairs. smoke is still rising from the

well, and is only 40 percent contained. we do not have word on what started the fires. >> and thousands of tourists are stranded in mexico. hurricane odile has been downgraded to tropical storm but not before leaving a trail of destruction through mexico's baja. cabo suffered a correct hit with widespread power outages. 30,000 tour is are stranded and 135 have been treated for minor injuries. east palo alto police are asking for help to find a missing teens 15-year-old who was last seen a week ago. his father took the siblings to school and when he came home the teach was gone and did not show up for school. neither did his friend would left a net including an indication they were running away. if you have seen the young man call the east palo alto police department. a union for workers at the

golden gate bridge is staging a strike over health benefits. they made sure that the public knew ahead of time how it could affect the commute. amy hollyfield joins us from the ferry terminal. eight workers did what they said they were going to do, saying it would not interrupt the ferry or the buses. who are checking it out. transit is still moving. the machinists said though would not show up for work. though did not. they are on strike. >> we on strike. >> they hit the lines before the sun came up with the golden gate bridge as the backdrop. rather than working in the bridge's machine shop, they are protesting the way they are treated. their union representative is happen telling the public speaking while they picket and calling this "a huge sacrifice." >> no one wants to do this. it is a last resort the these issues have been ongoing and it got to the point when the machinist union said "enough is

enough, we are striking." commuters heard about the strike but were not sure what to expect. >> we got text and e-mail if you were signed up for golden gate transit there would be a strike but it would not affect bus or ferry. >> as people waited for the buses they were surprised. other than having to duck through the crowd of those picketing, they did not have a problem. >> it has not impacted the commute that i can see so far. they have an issue and they have a right to strike the ought union and the bridge district negotiations have broken down over health care and no one from the bridge district was on camera but officials say they are disappointed the workers decided to strike and hope they come back to the bargaining table. the union plans to nobody but hopes the strike will chain the conscious. >> that is a great success fed. we have had all the unions on the picket lines at the bridge

lost 80's and temperatures right new 68 in san francisco, and 66 in oakland and 68 in half moon bay and everyone else is in the home 70's but for antioch and 78 and novato at 77. in emeryville it is clear with only a little haze. not too bad as far as visit business. mostly sunny and seasonal temperatures and showers are possible on when night through thursday morning and a dry and warmer weekend is coming at us for the days following the one small chance of rain. we have mid-to-upper 70's in the south bay and 80's around los gatos and morgan hill and gilroy. as we head up the peninsula it is 80 in some areas and mostly mid-to-upper 70's and low 70's in downtown and south san francisco and sausalito and upper 70's to low 80's through most of the north bay. we are seeing a couple places that could get to mid-80's. as far as long the east bay shore, mid-to-upper 70's and law
