he has prior felony convictions in santa cruz county, but none of those involve arson. in the meantime, the king fire has grown to 71,000 acres, and has spread from el dorado to placer county. >> fires are spotting over a mile ahead of the main fire. that means that the embers that come out of these fires, the smoke column, they are lofted and go way out into the unburned area, land and start a fire. >> reporter: while hand crews work on the ground, cal fire said they've dropped more than 400,000 gallons of retardant in the past two days. and the fire is still just 5% contained. it's a reality that those who live near the fire lines are well aware of. >> people keep saying, why don't you just get out and go someplace else. but you have to know, you know. >> reporter: and those folks still don't know really what's going on with their homes. haven't been allowed back in

yet. i can tell you, though, that the fire's moving away from poly pines threatened earlier in the week. but there are miles and miles of terrain like this, very rugged terrain. the fire traveled 15 miles, we're told, just yesterday. as for huntsman, he will be arraigned in placerville tomorrow afternoon. in el dorado county, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> thank you, laura. investigators in the derrick county have identified a juvenile suspect they believe set as many as 13 fires around oak crest in recent months. they announced they have a suspect in a fire still burning and already destroyed 30 homes and several other buildings in the county. the courtney fire has burned 320 acres since sunday. it's 70% contained. the flames moved quickly. one forester blames that on very dry conditions in the forest. four people have been hurt. neither of the suspects have been identified. and both arson cases are now

headed to the district attorney. cal fire is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the cause of the fire in the town of weed. the fire is now 65% contained. it's destroyed 150 homes, and is threatening 1,000 others. the fire forced nearly 3,000 people to evacuate. major news from washington. more developing news, congress approved funds to help syrian rebels fight terrorists. the bipartisan bill passed the senate late this afternoon. the money will go to a and train moderate syrian rebels. american forces will not fight on the ground. less than an hour ago, president obama addressed the nation saying, that we will not be intimidated. >> their barbaric murder of two americans, these terrorists thought they could intimidate us or cause us to shrink from the world, but today they're learned the same hard lessons as terrorists have gone before, as americans we do not give in to fear. when you harm our citizens, when you threaten the united states,

when you threaten our allies, it doesn't divide us, it unites us. >> more than 40 other countries have now joined the coalition to battle terrorists in syria and iraq. we have new details on an incident at the how many of san francisco 49ers defensive tackle ray mcdonald. mcdonald is being investigated on accusations he hit his pregnant fiancee last month. police were called to mcdonald's home on bentley ridge drive just after 8:00 p.m. it says an engaged couple were in an argument when the woman grabbed a firearm registered to her fiance and held it at her side. when he threatened to call 911, she put the firearm away and fled. she did not make any threats or point the gun. larry ellison is retiring from his role as the chief executive of oracle. he is the only ceo the company has ever had. he is also the highest paid in the country. and in an unusual move, ellison is being replaced by two senior

executives. abc 7 news reporter david louie has the story. >> reporter: one thing is very clear, larry ellison is not sailing off into the sunset. he will continue to wield considerable power here at oracle. but by giving up his ceo title, he's showing he has confidence in two successors, and their ability to chart the future course of the company. larry ellison is the longest running ceo of a tech company. he's been oracle's ceo for 37 years since he started the company in 1977. it also made him wealthy. forbes said he's the world's fifth richest man worth over $51 billion. at age 70 he's relinquishing the ceo title but not the power to keep running or arc will his way. he will become chairman and chief technology officer. that leaves him in charge of the software company's engineering. two others will succeed him as ceo. katz will focus on legal matters, while hurd, a former hewlett-packard ceo, will leave

the company's marketing and sales. both have been highly visible at the annual world coverage, at a gathering for the worldwide customers. ellison as chairman and hurd and katz as ceos will run oracle. some say it may lead to confusion over who is charting the company. >> at the end of the day, the sail can sail best with one captain. and you don't tend to give that up in the midst of something of a storm. >> reporter: the ellison announcement was made on the quarterly earnings day. oracle has dominated its mark over decades but facing challenges selling servers and soft wears as the competitors in the u.s. and competitors have moved to the cloud. ellison made his mark in many other endeavors, including sailing. last year his racing team won second america's cup. the billionaire persuaded san francisco government and business leaders to host the sailing competition in san francisco bay.

his wealth has enabled ellison to collect aircraft and acquire several mansions. he also owns most of the oiled of le nye in hawaii. not bad for a college dropout. in redwood city, david louie, abc 7 news. within minutes of learning about larry ellison came word that the ceo of oakland based clorox is stepping down. he earned $10 million a year. he will stay on as chairman. he'll be re placed by the company's executive vice president and chief operating officer. pg&e restored power to thousands of customers in the east bay. almost 12,000 homes and businesses lost power. pg&e crews say dust and dirt buildup during the dry season, heavy rains usually wash off the buildup right away. but rain turned it into mud. drivers encountered slick roads for the first time in months. at least three vehicles slammed into each other at tennessee and tu wal a my streets in vallejo.

it appears slick pavement might have led to a pickup running into the ditch. commuters faced delays after these cars crashed into each other. two vehicles overturned along the busy roadway. highway patrol reports one person was hurt. >> look at that picture. i took my dog out in the middle of the night and there was rain outside. we want to check in with abc 7 news reporter vic lee for the situation in marin. >> reporter: well, mill valley gets a real drenching every time it rains. and it rained last night. but not enough. people are happy about it. but they're also disappointed there wasn't more. what's this? if you forgot, it's called rain. >> when did we have the last rain? we had one, right? >> reporter: right. once upon a time. and suddenly, rain again. it was raining in the santa cruz mountains. some people weren't used to driving on wet roads. but the upside made up for it. it made residents of this dry,

flammable region feel a bit more fireproof. >> all the fires going on in northern california, just scary. so, yeah, i'm delighted. >> reporter: in berkeley, it was a downright downpour. >> we're super excited that it's raining. it hasn't rained in so long. we feel like we're just worried that it's never going to rain again. >> reporter: early-morning golfers didn't care about playing on wet links. >> my wife has this beautiful garden and we went out and celebrated this morning. >> what did you do? >> we walked around and looked at the happy plants. >> reporter: all considered, it was really just a drop. >> we had less than .02 of an inch of rain. that's not enough to have an effect on our water supply. >> reporter: this is a hindu deity. >> the obstacle, new beginnings, good luck. >> can he remove the obstacles that are preventing rain from coming here? >> yes, why not. >> reporter: maybe next time it

a an airport in phoenix is under lockdown right now. police say two men shot at a man at a gas station in tempe and drove off. officers gave chase. they lost the suspects. a short time later police learned the suspects were at the airport. one of them was found, the other is still on the loose. right now police aren't allowing anyone in or out of the airport until that suspect is found. a scare for passengers after a jetblue airliner heading to texas had to return to long beach airport. you can see smoke inside the cabin. these photos taken by a passenger. the emergency slides were deployed, and passengers evacuated when the plane landed in long beach. you saw the oxygen masks come down. according to the faa, the plane had a problem with one of its two engines, but the airline is still looking into exactly what happened. there were no serious injuries, but a few passengers were treated at the scene and one passenger was taken to the hospital for observation.

an oakland man faces felony charges for the accidental shooting of his 20-month-old son. the toddler was shot in the shoulder while riding in a stroller on 77th avenue last week. today police announced the bullet came from a semiautomatic pistol belonging to the boy's father. apparently the gun fell out of his pocket and went off when it hit the pavement. he's charged with three felony counts, including child abuse, and carrying a concealed firearm. he pleaded not guilty in court today. enough is enough. the recent fight by high school students outside an antioch taco bell is forcing the restaurant to stop walkup service after school lets out. the community is fed up, and police are now stepping up. >> reporter: in an ant yak shopping mall, a show of force, police, security, staffers from nearby deer valley high school. according to shoppers and merchants their presence has come years too late. >> the kids are just like a zoo.

>> they're punks, not kids. >> reporter: reaction to the video of a fight between high school girls in this mall on september 5th. one fight among many happening so frequently, that at 3:00 p.m. diana, the local taco bell closed the lobby to all walk-ins, and mcdonald's said they would do the same. >> they're not scared. they're not afraid. police need to be here. >> my 12-year-old son got jumped. he's 12-year-olds. got jumped by four deer valley high school for $8. >> reporter: antioch police say the problem with the high school kids has ebbed and flowed for several years, and they have made arrests. >> battery, assault, possession of drugs, those types of violations. >> reporter: today the mall came under a microscope. the kids passed through like little angels except for one resistant girl who police detained for jay walking. the school district is frustrated by what it cannot do

once the kids leave the school gates. >> i wouldn't say we're powerless. our jurisdiction is limited. >> reporter: police have asked the mall owner to take more responsibility for security. >> the property owner has a very huge responsibility to make sure that their customers and people that are on their property are safe. >> is the property owner doing its job? >> i don't believe so. >> reporter: this family did not respond to our inquiries today. wayne friedman, abc 7 news. doctors say a rare and dangerous virus has turned up in california for the first time after sickening children in other states. four children were treated at san diego area hospitals for a respiratory illness. they range in age from 2 to 13. one of them was visiting san diego. sim tols resemble the common cold and flu, fever, running nose, body aches. children with asthma can be especially vulnerable.

no deaths have been reported. president obama has ordered the federal government to create a national plan to fight antibiotic resistant germs by next year. health experts blame antibiotic resistant infections for killing 23,000 americans each year. the centers for disease control and prevention believes the problem is getting worse. the president's order includes new rules to oversee the use of antibiotics in hospitals. we've all asked ourselves this question when we're out shopping. how can you tell if something is a good value or just cheap. >> we're looking into that. >> at walmart, known for value, of course. a good price is only key if you're getting a good product. so how can you tell if something is a smart pick? "consumer reports" takes us into the labs to get a handle on what to get and what to forget at walmart, based on the latest tests. think shopping at walmart is a bright idea? "consumer reports" tests shows it could be especially if you're in the market for l.e.d. light

bulbs. >> they're typically very expensive. but after 3,000 hours of testing we found several from walmart that are cheap and really good. >> reporter: including this great value, 60-watt equivalent a-19, use it three hours a day and it should last about 22 years. not bad for $10. several great value flood lights are also a good bargain. another good deal is wild oats organic food. todd marks compared prices for pantry staples, like ketchup, beans, marinara sauce and creamy peanut butter. >> walmart's prices for organics were cheaper for local supermarkets for everything we looked at. often 50% cheaper. >> reporter: "consumer reports" regularly includes walmart's brand against big brands and found several winners, including ranch dressing, vanilla ice cream and mozzarella cheese. several walmart's paper products are also good bargains. great value facial tissues with

lotion, ultra-soft. as is the top rated toilet paper, white cloud, three-ply ultra. walmart paper towels are both strong and absorbent. the testers and the laundry labs found not every low price is a great value. the great value national laundry detergent had downright dismal performance in the tests. a low price can also be a washout. get this, you may also want to skip the meat and produce aisle at walmart. although it is america's largest grocer, walmart earned low scores for meat and produce quality. and "consumer reports" most recent survey. we finally got a little bit of rain around here. cloudy skies, too. >> yes. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the latest. >> we did get our much-needed rain here in the bay area. we have another chance in the accuweather forecast. before i get to that, look behind me. it's so bright and sunny. we still have some lingering

clouds. not everyone's enjoying blue skies. we'll check out live doppler 7 hd and see what's happening right now. clouds lingering in the north bay, and even a few showers from geyserville down to the santa rosa area. we take you in closer here and you'll notice around montgomery drive, still seeing some returns here. dew points are running higher compared to what we're used to here. 60s across some parts of the bay area making it feel a little more muggy than normal for summertime. a few clouds right now as we look back to san francisco. 71 right now oakland. 78 in san jose. some buildups from the mount tam cam. you get moisture heating from the sun, and you get the cumulus clouds that you're looking at. napa 80. 79 in livermore. temperatures today came down as we expected two to six degrees. here's what your morning commute might look like.

the golden gate bridge is socked in. look for drizzle tomorrow morning. warmer weather into the weekend. autumn arrives monday at 7:29 p.m. here's our system that we've been watching. that was responsible for the wet morning commute. that system is departing. but with the wind continuing out of the southwest, we're going to see a humid night ahead. and a mild one at that. that same wind direction is taking up the swells. and long period swell will keep the beach hazard going until 9:00 p.m. tonight for south facing beaches in marin and santa cruz counties. there is a risk of strong rip currents tonight. we may see overnight coastal drizzle. as you'll notice for your start of your morning commute. and then it's going to be sunny bay and inland tomorrow afternoon with clouds hanging tough right near the coastline. temperatures will come in close to today, perhaps a little higher. tomorrow morning, don't worry about a jacket or sweater, upper 50s to the low 60s. really a mild, muggy start to

the polls have closed in scotland where the country voted whether or not to end its 307-year-old connection to england. the voting age was lowered to 16 for the first time. final results are expected sometime after 10:00 p.m. our time. we will let you know immediately. in an odd twist of timing, st. andrews golf course in scott land voted to allow women for the first time. it's considered the spiritual home of the sport. the new policy will take effect immediately. the venue regularly hosts the u.s. open and other tournaments. augusta national in georgia admitted women two years ago. so far, only two have become members. former secretary of state condoleezza rice and dar la moore, the first woman to land on the cover of "fortune"

magazine. the oakland a's are severing ties with the santa river cats today. they released a new deal with the san francisco giants. officially ending their agreement with the oakland a's. the a's announced a new deal to team up with the national sound for their aaa team. sacramento has been home to the river cats since 2000. kgo radio host said he has parkinson's disease. he and his wife jan black sat down with our cheryl jennings to talk about ron's battle. ron's doctor, william marks from ucsf, also joined us to talk about symptoms and treatment. turns out depression is part of the illness. >> depression, i have clinical depression. so the parkinson's feeds into that. bill will tell you, i was at 40% or 60% of people who get parkinson's are depressed. >> do you find he's moody? >> yes. >> well, i seriously think he's sort of always been like that.
