crest, a proctor & gamble toothpaste company, was designing pink mouthguards for players but backed out of that promotion today. the nfl will continue with the pink promotion as planned and players will have the option to wear pink mouthguards this year. coming up on world news in half an hour, another bomb shell in the ray rice case. what the ravens knew early on about the video showing ray rice punching his then fiancee. what team executives told the nfl. condolences are flooding in for former san jose police chief joe mcnamara. the former new york beat cop led the department from 1976 until 1991. his policies helped san jose become the safest large city in the country despite having the fewest officers per capita. he was an advocate of community-based policing. he campaigned against assault weapons and was a critic of the war on drugs. after retirement, mcnamara became a fellow at the hoover institution and was also a best-selling author. the san jose police department issued this statement. chief mcnamara is credited with

leading the san jose police department in a time of great modernization, expansion and reorganization. he will be missed. joe mcnamara died after an eight month long battle with pancreatic cancer. he was 79 years old. giants fans are sending get well wishes to hall of famer willie mccovey. mccovey has been in the hospital since last week for complications stemming from an infection. the team says mccovey's recovery is progressing every day. he debuted with the giants in 1959, one year after the club moved to san francisco. fans also call mccovey stretch and willie mac. the giants retired his number 44 in 1980. the 76-year-old depends on crutches to get around after hurting his knees while playing baseball. developing news. san jose police have given the all-clear after a bomb was reported at a high school. a 911 caller said a bomb was on the campus of andrew hill high school around 1:30 this afternoon. the school district described that man as being quote, strange. he also demanded a ransom.

police kept students and staff indoors for a short time. everyone then moved to nearby slovendale middle school, where parents were able to pick up their children. the man accused of starting that massive fire in el dorado county was in court today. wayne huntsman pleaded not guilty to arson in el dorado county superior court. he's being held on $10 million bail. huntsman was arrested wednesday. authorities have not said what led them to him or possible motive. he's charged with arson on forest land with aggravating factors because two firefighters were injured. you're looking at live pictures of that big fire burning in the sierra. it's now burned more than 120 square miles and it's just 10% contained. look at the smoke filling the sky. firefighters say the fire is so extreme, it's pushing through their lines. because of the drought, of course, normal amounts of retardant are not stopping the flames. it's relentless. today, fire officials say multiple structures have been destroyed in the white meadows area east of pollack pines.

12,000 homes are still threatened by the flames. nearly 3,000 people remain under mandatory evacuation orders tonight. and a warning of impact from the fire here in the bay area, too. smoke is expected to move into solano, contra costa, napa and alameda counties which may affect people with breathing difficulties. be aware. two california lawmakers are asking the state attorney general to investigate the relationship between pg & e and the california public utilities commission. this morning, state senator jerry hill and assembly member kevin mullen dropped off a letter asking for kamela harris to investigate the utility. it st stems from e-mails in whi pg & e tried to influence the selection of a judge looking into the san bruno explosion. >> i have to wonder if this type of communication is happening between cpuc and pg & e, could it also be happening between the

cpuc and the other regulated utilities. >> pg & e has since fired three employees who were inappropriately communicating with cpuc staffers. >> we found there was some emphasis where we had areas we needed to work on. we separated those officers and will work to ensure this never happens again. >> hill accused cpuc president michael peevey of being too cozy with pg & e and said he should resign. a major about-face for the city of oakland. the city is giving most of a $1 billion garbage collection deal back to america's largest waste hauler after a tough legal fight. abc 7 news reporter lillian kim is live in oakland to explain what's happening now. >> reporter: a lot of people were rooting for california waste solutions. this is a much smaller company than waste management, but the people here say the new deal is actually a win/win. under the new deal, oakland-based california waste solutions is going from a $1 billion contract to a $300

million contract. so instead of picking up all of oakland's trash, it will only be picking up the city's recycling. a result of hardball tactics by a formidable rival, waste management. >> waste management has a certain posture that's recognized throughout the united states. >> reporter: california waste solutions held a news conference today announcing the new deal and despite the smaller contract, they are not bitter. it was clear houston-based waste management, the country's largest trash hauler, wasn't going to let oakland go without a fight. the company filed a lawsuit and launched a voter referendum drive. the threat of a protracted battle prompted the mayor to broker a compromise. >> it will be some stability. we won't have our garbage literally held up in court and they are going to keep the same low price. >> reporter: while that low price still amounts to a rate hike, city leaders say it was the most affordable option. nevertheless, splitting up the contract between california waste solutions and waste management is drawing mixed reaction from oakland residents.

police now say a man who was rescued from under a b.a.r.t. train last night had been sleeping under the platform and was most likely intoxicated. the incident happened at the concord martinez b.a.r.t. station. a train operator spotted the man as the train arrived. amazingly, he wasn't hit by the train and was unhurt. he was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and could face trespassing charges. suspected chinatown crime boss raymond shrimp boy chou is suing san francisco and mayor ed

lee. he wants records turned over. he claims those documents show mayor lee took a $20,000 bribe. that bribe came from the same undercover federal agent who claimed state senator leland yi took a similar payment. one of the criminal defense attorneys spoke about the civil lawsuit filed by a separate team of lawyers. >> for us, in the criminal defense case, look what it says. the real criminals could well be the corrupt politicians. they don't touch them. then the prosecution seeks a gag order so we can't reveal anything that we know through discovery. >> chou and yi both face multiple charges, including money laundering and gun trafficking. mayor lee denies the accusations. union city police are trying to track down a thief who stole between $8,000 and $10,000 from a church. it happened at st. ann's church sometime tuesday morning. the pastor says someone snuck in through a side window, walked into the church office and

grabbed a box with cash and checks inside. a surveillance camera has a picture but the pastor says looks like a woman. police are investigating and did recover fingerprints from the scene. >> very disturbing. i'm very sad by it. if you have done this, please return the money. i will forgive you but you have to pay the price, justice. >> the pastor also told us cars at the church are broken into almost every week. protesters hit the streets of san pablo today hoping to prevent the sale of doctors hospital to a nearby casino. the hospital operates one of the few emergency rooms in western contra costa county but it's running out of money. last month, it stopped accepting ambulances. according to an internal memo released by the california nurses association, the hospital is now exploring options to sell medical offices and potentially the entire facility to the

nearby san pablo casino. >> they're taking away our only hospital. i'm frightened now that i'm getting older, my husband's getting older, where are we going to go in case of an emergency? >> doctors medical center officials say they are mystified about the allegations. the hospital has already leased a parking lot to the casino. in a statement to abc 7 news, they say hospital leadership will continue to look for ways to save money and keep revenue coming in the door as well as look for solutions to our current fiscal crisis. a mixed day on the stock market despite the largest ipo ever. chinese e-commerce giant alibaba made its debut on the new york stock exchange this morning. traders wore raincoats to symbolize how the ipo will rain cash on investors. shares soared 36% from their initial pricing, a jump that even surprised investors. as an early investor in alibaba, yahoo! is in line to make big

bucks. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live in the newsroom with more. >> they certainly did make those big bucks. yahoo! owned about 22% of alibaba going into trading today. they sold a portion of their sthar shares, netting them more than $8 billion before taxes. the seo ceo of yahoo! released a statement thank you alibaba's founder for the quote, wise investments. the largest ipo in american history comes on the shoulders of a chinese company. a company many san francisco residents still don't know. have you ever heard of alibaba? >> no. >> i don't even know what that is. >> reporter: when you hear alibaba, what comes to mind? >> middle eastern something. probably like a sul tan. >> reporter: the site combines online retail, social media and a search engine into one. this woman used alibaba when living in kazahkstan. >> it was very good prices and there is no tax like here in the

its new windfall of cash. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. the wait ended today for people who wanted to get their hands on the latest iphone. some cheered, others high-fived as they picked up their new phones at the apple store in downtown palo alto. apple's ceo tim cook surprised some of them by showing up at the university avenue store in person. two people told abc 7 news reporter matt keller about their experience meeting him. >> yeah, it was nice to see him, i guess. i don't know. we were here since 9:00. at that point, you were just yay. >> i took a selfie. >> reporter: he was fine with that? >> yeah. yeah. totally cool. >> the iphone 6 plus features a 5 1/2 inch screen, that compares to a 4.7 inch screen for the iphone 6, and 4 inches on the older models. the new iphones are also thinner

than previous models. >> apple decided to feature larger screens on the latest generation of iphones after many competitors like samsung offered phones with bigger displays. consumer reports provided this video of engineers putting the new iphone through a series of tests to see if bigger is actually better. >> the iphone 6 strikes a great balance between a large screen size and easy one-handed operation. the 6 plus, however, is a bit hard to handle with one hand. >> funny how phones got smaller and smaller, now bigger and bigger. apple claims the batteries in the iphone 6 last longer than those in earlier models. consumer reports still hasn't completed tests on the batteries. that can take several days and it has to be done on phones using different cellular carriers. >> good point. we all wanted them smaller. all right. well, believe it or not, this is the final weekend of summer. >> feels a little sticky outside still. meteorologist sandhya patel joins us with the accuweather forecast. >> yeah, we still have the dewpoints in the low 60s in some

areas which makes it feel more humid than we're used to. as we hit the weekend, that is going to change. right now, just a gentle breeze, low clouds pushing in from the coast over the bay. it's the marine influence. take a look from the live doppler 7 hd perspective. the coast is socked in which explains why coastal highs came down today. only 64 in pacifica, 66 half moon bay. san francisco managed to get up to 68. some of the warmer locations like antioch, 87 degrees where the sun was shining. keeping an eye on the king fire in el dorado county, there is a reason for this. smoke from that fire, due to the wind direction, already starting to spill towards the sacramento valley area and we may get some of that smoke drifting into our area this upcoming weekend. so the bay area air quality management district has issued a smoke advisory for saturday and sunday, particularly in solano, contra costa, alameda and napa counties, you have to be careful if you do smell or obviously see smoke, limit your outdoor
