the latest. >> reporter: the car is still here, cheryl. they say the man behind the wheel was desperate. he led police on a chase for hours and crashed here. it appears he was going to take down whoever he could with him, even police and good samaritans. >> when people first saw this car accident in downtown san francisco just after 600 this morning, they figured it was because of the rain slicked roads. they had no idea that the man inside had a gun or that he would shoot at them. >> as the suspect was attempting to get himself out of the car and good samaritans were going to his aide, he fired at the good samaritans. several rounds. at least one piece of something struck a samaritan in the chest, it is nonlife threatening, he

will be fine. >> a man forced a woman out of herre escalade at gunpoint. he went through rich monday, across the golden gate bridge. >> you could hear them saying "get your hands in the air." >> workers ran outside to see what happened. >> they were standing there watching do the whole spectator thing and heard the shots so we all ran back there and sat and it was crazy. >> she says the gunshots were rapid like fire crackers. >> when he made a turn turning the gun towards the officers, several several officers fired upon the suspect. >> the chief says it appears to him to be a justified shooting,

witnesses agree. >> it was about five minutes after the cops got there be they shot him. they ordered him numerous times to throw down the weapon and show his hands. they did everything right. >> reporter: witnesses say it was intense. here is what the scene looks like right now. city streets are still blocked off. i just checked in with police and they do not know when they will be reopening them. no information at this time on the suspect. it is very congested down here. thank goodness it happened at 6:00 in the morning when it wasn't as crowded as it is during the working day. >> all right, the crash, the shooting scene, and the police investigation all brought traffic to a stop for several blocks around battery and sampson street. people were walking in on public transport were also caught in

the mess. >> it was all blocked off. you could tell something big was going on here. >> it is pretty bad right now. it has taken me about an hour and i have a little ways to go. >> investigators are gathering evidence. a police spokesman says they hope to clear the area by lunchtime. >> september rainfall that swept through the bay area. here is what it looks like this morning in the north bay. the wet weather is beautiful for water officials. there was hundreds of accidents in the morning commute. look at this long list of incidents. more than 65 listed on the california highway a troll incident log in the 7:00 hour. in oakland, a crash involving a tanker truck tied up traffic for mili miles.

and take a look at this, a leaky roof at a san francisco international airport. they had to put down tarps and buckets in terminal 3. there have been power outages all across the pay area all across the area this morning. pg&e says about 10,000 customers are without power. power has been restored to three schools that briefly lost it this morning. we have live coverage of the storm. we have rain that has caused a lot of problems. we start with mike nicco. >> notice no umbrella needed right now as the steady rain has moved on. let's look at where it is. you see discovery bay heading into the central valley down there the diablo range and south of gilroy now. we have lightning showing up off of the coast. that's the next batch of energy

that will bring us a chance of scattered showers. what to expect, steady rain is over, scattered showers possible today, tonight, and tomorrow. all of this rain is heading up to the sierra which will be a great benefit to the firefighters up there. let's talk about rain amounts, it's more than i thought. a quarter of an inch to half an inch in san francisco to 6/10 in redwood city. >> mike, thank you. the south bay also got quite a drenching. the storm made a mess of driving conditions and caused power outages. matt keller is live. >> reporter: the rain caused problems on the roads and on top of power poles. >> storms in september are often filled with drizzles and sprinkles, not this one. a consistent rain drenched mountain for hours this morning.

several fires were reported because of failing transformers. this is what a power pole is supposed to look like. this is what one looked like on fuller avenue after the transformer appeared to explode. >> the top of the pole was dropping hot ambers all over the place. >> my wife reached over to turn the alarm off and we heard a pop and all of the lights went out. >> firefighters told them to stay inside until the fire was out. one place you should never feel secure is on highway 17 on a wet day. a car heading northbound spun out at the bottom of the first treacherous curve, just north of the summit. drivers had to endure moderate to heavy rain. windshield wipers were tested near the san jose airport while chp responded to several accidents throw the area.

if you weren't driving, you better remember your umbrella. >> i just got an umbrella and i went outside to see if it was really raining or not. >> and it was, wasn't it? >> yeah. >> it won't do more for the reservoirs here in santa clara, they're at 36% of capacity right now. matt, thank you so much. we have breaking news right now out of alaska where there has been a 6.1 earthquake. it happened in the last 15 minutes. so far no word of damage or injuries and no tsunami warning. here is the quake, you can see it right here. this is the usgs website tells us about it. 6.2 they have it right there you see. they're still working on that. many people have been reporting on social media, a lot of people said they could feel the quake and hopefully not as destructive

as the one they had in the 1960s. >> in the meantime happens now a search for a missing sailor. we see the man's empty boat near a ka traz. the coast guard said the man was spotted about 6:00 a.m. on that boat. when they returned about two hours later the man was gone. at least two u.s. coast guard ships are searching for him. >> mountain view police are investigating the death of two people after a foul odor led to finding their bodies. after a report of a bad gas smell. firefighters put on their hazmat gear and went into the coroners office. four officers had to be treated for exposure to the smell. the cause is still under investigation. no gas leaks were found in the area. they say it appears to be a

chemical. three buildings were evacuated and everyone was let back in this morning. more breaking news just in, ferry captains on the golden gate bridge district are going on strike tomorrow. so there will be no ferry service from 4:30 in the morning until 9:00 tomorrow night. officials say the one day strike will affect nearly 9,000 passengers that ride that ferry every day. please follow us on twitter. tune into the abc morning news for the impact on the morning commute at 4:30. >> we'll keep you posted on your commute options. a big shake up at the white house. we learn that attorney general eric holder is stepping down. >> you want to check your pockets, someone in the bay area is holding a lotto ticket worth

balloons. the person that bought the ticket has not come forward yet. but they told store owners that it is one of their regular customers. that lucky ticket is the only one to match all six numbers for the $225 million prize. it is a family run business. the general manager says his parents got a call about the exciting news last night. >> we thought it was a joke, a prank, but then we started getting calls from reporters and everything else. we realized it was legitimate. >> reporter: the family hopes their luck will continue and the market will now be known as a lucky retailer where people line up to buy lottery tickets. he says they're not sure what they will do with the $1 million, but they will probably put it back into the store and make some improvements.

alcatraz, it's beautiful. as if the bay area could be any more picturesque. all of that sunshine is starting to break out nap will have a little bit of a detriment on our forecast as far as keeping the showers going. it won't be anything like we saw this morning, though. it will be more like this in the afternoon as sky-7 hd was showing all of the beautiful clouds as they started to break up over berkeley early this morning. look at how clean the air is as it comes in from alaska. thunderstorms are starting to develop, look at what way they're heading. so both areas possibly getting some more light to moderate rain, briefly heavy at times. that will move away from us. i got my eye on this area of low

pressure. that will rise the jet stream in and that will help trigger more scattered showers for us as we ahead toward the afternoon, evening, and overnight hours. we have a dry weekend with a slow warming trend on the way. let's look at what is going on today. temperatures are cooler behind the front but not exceptionally cooler. we'll have 60s along the coast. if you're going to the game tonight, a stray shower is possible, but nothing will rain out this game. four games left in the season and they're all with the padres. it will drop down to 62 by the end of the game. partly cloudy skies and fog developing in the overnight hours.

upper 50s to lower 60s notice where the best chance of scattered showers are in the overnight hours. the warmer water will create greater instability. here is the front, it moved through. the steady rain is over. on the backside of it we have a cold pocket of air. that means warm sunshine, warm moist ground, and you see the showers that will develop to the north. our best chance of a stray shower will be across the bay. overnight look how they line up along the coast, up over the ocean. tomorrow up in the north bay again, a better chance of a stray shower that will all fade away once the sunsets at 7:00 tomorrow. tomorrow and saturday the coolest days in the forecast. we'll see sunshine saturday into sunday and look at monday, tuesday, wednesday. upper 70s to middle 80s for the rest of us. i hope you enjoyed the rain, sorry about the timing and i'm
