4:00 pm
good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry beil. >> i'm cheryl jennings. ama daetz is off today. let's start with a live look outside. this is a view from the east bay. you can see it is sunny but there are heavy clouds overhead. >> we have time lapse video from about an hour ago. we saw rain clouds move through from our emeryville tower cam. we even had some reports of lightning. spencer christian is here with a look at exactly what's happening out there. sunny skies behind you. >> that's true. in fact, most of the bay area is seeing exactly what you're seeing behind me right now, bright sunshine with scattered
4:01 pm
cumulus clouds. but we also have scattered showers and some thunderstorms. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. you can see a very active pattern here although the showers are widely scattered, we are going to a closer look at santa cruz. we just had a thunderstorm with lightning strikes there within the last 40 minutes or so, now moving eastward, that cell is, and southward. we also have reports from this storm of quarter inch hail. also up near fairfield right now, there's an area of thunderstorm activity and a cell moving through the fairfield area right now, having produced several lightning strikes and just about an hour ago, we had a couple lightning strikes in the northeastern edge of san pablo bay. so it's a very unstable air mass right now that has been made even more unstable by the heating of the afternoon sun. so this pattern will probably be with us until much later in the afternoon and evening. meanwhile, over in the sierra this weekend, central and southern sierra, above 9,000 feet, look for about two inches of snow. that would be generally in the
4:02 pm
region from yosemite to mammoth mountain. so quite a wild weather pattern going into the weekend. i will give you a closer look at what we can expect the next couple days in just a few minutes. >> spencer, thank you. two people died today after a bus and a van collided head on in san mateo. it happened 12:45 this afternoon. sky 7 hd shows you the front of the van smashed in, terrible accident. the driver and a passenger were killed. five bus passengers went to the hospital. their injuries are not considered life-threatening. all northbound lanes and two southbound lanes of south el camino royale are closed. planes are flying in and out of chicago after the faa stopped flights for more than five hours today. >> we are learning more about the man whose actions apparently started it all. police say a contract worker for the federal aviation administration set a fire in the basement of an air traffic control center in aurora, illinois. firefighters found him in the
4:03 pm
basement with burns and apparent self-inflicted knife cuts. >> he was lying on the ground. they attempted to get him out of the building. there was some degree of effort on their part to drag him out of the building, but he was conscious. >> the man was taken to the hospital. another employee was treated for smoke inhalation. the faa stopped all flights while they investigated. taking a live look at san francisco international airport where hundreds of travelers were stranded today because of the situation in chicago. more than 50 flights were either canceled or delayed at sfo. abc 7 news reporter matt keller talked to passengers who were scrambling to get to their weekend's destinations. >> reporter: a canceled flight represents more than just a status report on a big electronic board at sfo. for many, it's a missed opportunity. >> all the other flights are overbooked so chances are i may not get out but i'm going to sit here all day, to see if i can. i want to see my son play football tonight. >> reporter: disappointment and a sense of helplessness permeated through the minds of southwest passengers trying to
4:04 pm
get to chicago or milwaukee. chicago's midway airport is a major hub for the airline. all the morning's flights to and from midway were canceled. ticket agents had to deliver the bad news. >> crazy. >> crazy. >> but it's good. >> reporter: people being nice? >> extremely nice. >> reporter: the full impact of the fire at the air traffic control facility will not be felt until all the airports are back operating normally. if it's not a cancellation, it's a delay but until the wheels are up, that delay can always turn into a lost travel day, maybe even a missed wedding. >> we've got i think ten other family members flying out of here to milwaukee eventually, hopefully. >> reporter: for a wedding tomorrow, huh? >> yes. big wedding. all the family's coming together and most of them are in san francisco. >> reporter: the san jose duty manager told me the best advice for today is to check with your airline and make sure there are no changes to your flight. matt keller, abc 7 news. flight radar 24.com shows the effect in our skies this

4:06 pm
but it's always a nice thing to do. >> i was looking for an easy way out this morning. >> reporter: ferry service was shut down because the ferry captains went on strike. >> i got to get on my bike and ride to work. >> i'm surprised. i didn't know. i guess i have to go back and think about my options. >> reporter: taking the bus was an option. but a slower one than usual. it appears some bus drivers chose to support the ferry workers. >> we had 12 bus drivers call in sick starting yesterday afternoon. it was very last minute. that's a large number for us. it led us to cancel 13 bus trips today. >> reporter: bus riders tell us the commute was slower. >> i got to the bus stop, i expected the bus to be coming any minute because there were quite a few people waiting. then we kept waiting and waiting and waiting. then i read the paper and i saw the ferries were on strike. >> reporter: the ferry captains say they are sorry for the inconvenience and point out they did give the public notice. this is only a one-day strike and they are doing it on friday, the least traveled day of the week.
4:07 pm
>> it's the last place we want to be. we want to be at work. we want to be getting people across the bay to work. but we feel like we have run out of options. >> reporter: the bridge district says it's disappointed that workers decided to strike when negotiations are still continuing. both sides are due back at the bargaining table on monday. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. more commuting woes. traffic is moving at a crawl in some parts of san francisco, especially in soma, because oracle open world will begin this weekend. the first event isn't until sunday but the setup has already begun. howard street is closed while crews build an outdoor plaza to hold the event's 60,000 attendees. you also have a giants game tonight at 7:00 at at & t park, final home stand of the season. you can expect traffic to remain heavy well into this evening. san rafael firefighters knocked down a fire very quickly at an apartment building this afternoon. it happened just after noon.

4:09 pm
transferred here as part of a rescue operation. he was not part of the original effort to try -- part of the original group of horses that was going to be transferred but monica hardiman, the head of the equine rescue center, insisted that he be included. the horse had a heavy infestation of parasites and worms in its large intestine. the worms robbed the horse of nutrition. it spread to the lungs. that was the finding of the veterinarian who performed the post-mortem examination. the horse was also emaciated, weighing 75 pounds lower than it should. >> this particular worm competes in part for nutrition that the horse would be getting, that the worms were getting it. worst case scenario, there are so many of them that you can get an impaction. >> reporter: is what happened to justice justification in your mind how badly the horses were treated? >> yes. that's why i felt it was very important for us to get them out of there and get them here, because i knew there was
4:10 pm
something going on, and that we didn't know about. >> reporter: the other horses are said to be in better condition. they are responding well as monica feeds them. they will be under constant veterinary monitoring and care. three of the horses you see here are blind and have been separated from the others for safety. again, a feel for their new surroundings. the hope is to nurse them back to health slowly and hopefully they can be then adopted out in the very near future. monica definitely credits all the horse lovers and neighbors in the morgan hill area for bringing this situation to everyone's attention. the animal control people in santa clara county said the horses were not abused or they were not neglected, but now we have a case where one of them already has died of severe infestation of parasites. david louie, abc 7 news. they're making the best of a bad situation at a san francisco bar damaged by an out of control driver.
