good saturday morning. i'm tiffany wilson. a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you. live doppler 7 hd, you really see the rain and snow showers in the sierra, nevada. nice and quiet with partly cloudy conditions and the rain, for the most part, has moved out. at the beach had in santa cruz a high today in the 70s. but right now it is 58 in oakland. slowly coming up. 60 in san jose with more clouds around and the view from our east bay hills camera volmer peak, very pretty with high clouds. not much of a marine layer at all. we will look for the temperatures today to remain just a little bit below average. in fact, low 70s san francisco with upper 60s at the coast.

look for mid-70s in oakland and inland you might see an 80-degree temperature but more likely upper 70s. we'll talk about a slow warm-up over the weekend and the high fire danger returns for the upcoming week. all of that in a few minutes. tiffany? lisa, thank you. new this morning, at least one home under construction by habitat for humanity has been damaged following a three-alarm fire in san francisco. the fire broke out around 11:00 last night near alemany bouleva boulevard. at one point flames were visible from highway 280. no word yet on the cause of this fire. and we turn now 0 to a terrible bus crash overnight involving a college softball team. at least four young women on the team were killed and a dozen others injured when their bus collided with a semitruck on a highway in oklahoma. abc's it t.j. holmes with more on how this happened. >> reporter: tragedy overnight.

four students killed after a school bus carrying the north central college team collided with a semitruck. >> murray county stand by. >> reporter: the fatal accident happened near the oklahoma/texas border as the team traveled back to campus after a game. authorities say there are more than a dozen injured. >> trying to get the bus up to try to get her out. >> reporter: the four fatalities are members of the softball team, three pronounced deed dead on the scene, another after being take tone a local hospital. as the campus begins to grieve, the school released this statement. we ask for your prayers at this time for our softball team. their bus has been involved in an accident in oebklahoma. >> that was t.j. holmes reporting. while the cause of the crash remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest the semitruck had crossed the median before slamming into the bus. two people are dead after a head-on collision between a van and bus in san mateo.

multiple charges including ougauto theft and violating his probation. they also recovered one of eight vehicles stolen from auto bonn motors early sunday morning. six other vehicles that were driven off the mercedes lot were recovered after they were found abandoned in oakland tuesday. santa cruz sheriff's deputies arrest add man accused of flashing women on a running trail near moran lagoon. they say 21-year-old eric stinson confessed to exposing and touching himself. this is surveillance video from earlier this month. he allegedly ran away after exposing himself when a female jogger tried to call police. he's being held on $10,000 bail.

happening today, barbara boxer will assess the damage following last month's earthquake. she will be joined by mayor pesh l and congressman mike tompson. they'll hold a press conference to discuss the latest recovery efforts. a 6.0 magnitude quake rattled the area hitting the area hard. a massive entertainment event in napa to support victims of last month's earthquake takes a break this weekend. a music, food, and wine event is being held today and tomorrow. tickets are $20 a person. tomorrow night a sold-out concert. proceeds will help those recovering from the quake. and here is a reminder for drive drivers. ten miles of highway 37 are closed this weekend between vallejo and sears point. expected to reopen by 5:00

japan's meteorological agency raised the alert level for mt. ontake to three on a scale of one to five. officials are warning climbers to stay away from the volcano. hundreds of bay area travelers got stranded when flights to and from chicago were canceled. at san francisco international airport, more than 50 flights were either canceled or delayed. the it faa stopped all planes in and out of o'hare and midway airport for five hours after a man set a fire in the basement of an air traffic control center outside chicago. a group traveling from mo it te modesto was supposed to stop for a cruise. they've already paid for parts of the trip they won't 0 get to enjoy. >> so we never visited rome. we went a few days early to see the sights, which we're not going to see. we'll see the coliseum anyway. but the vatican is closed on sunday, i understand, and that's the day we'll be there. >> he has a better attitude than i probably would have. the faa says it will probably be

30s, and it's raining around bear valley. snow at kirkwood and the temperature today, the high temperature will just be in the upper 40s with rain throughout the afternoon. in the northern and southern sierras. san jose underneath mostly cloudy skies, hovering around 60 degrees. 63 in san carlos as well as half moon bay with 58 in oakland and the cooler numbers are in the north bay. here is emeryville, nice and sunny here with low 50s from napa to santa rosa. 55 in petaluma and liver are more, good morning. 61 for you. and by the delta, a cool 57 degrees. look at this ominous shot and look at that snow in lake at that hoe. a gorgeous picture. hopefully this is a preview of what's to come for the winter. we can keep our fingers crossed. for the week ahead not going to happen. in fact, this will be melting with the ground so warm, in fact, by the afternoon it should be gone and then temperatures really climbing in the mountains as well throughout the week ahead. partly cloudy this morning.

the sunny and mild over the weekend. still cooler than average but the warming trend, we have 80s and 90s and the outlook for the middle of the week is when october arrives. an area of low pressure, you can see the twists in the atmosphere, over central california and that is providing the instability, the showers, the snow, the possibility of thunderstorms in north lake and south lake and southern california has been dry so as the low moves out, all the activity shifts to eastern california, western nevada. high pressure sits offshore and it's so far away temperatures will be cooler than average. 60s and 70s. we should be in the low 80s for san at that row is a. about 80 in san jose and shy of that today in the south bay. 75 san jose. look for low 70s, santa cruz, lots of clouds now. mid-70s cupertino. low to mid-70s from palo al it to to redwood city. pacifica is fog fest. it will be a sunny afternoon. 71 downtown, right around average. 79 in santa rosa.

protesting the more than 2,000 palestinians killed by israel in gaza. a similar demonstration was held last month when a five-day blockade of an israeli-owned ship forced the boat to turn around with most cargo still onboard. this morning president obama says the world is looking to america and its commitment to freedom in the face of uncertainty. in this morning's weekly address, the president reiterates the message he delivered this week at the united nations. he says mek is leading the world against the most pressing challenges including defeating terrorist group known as the islamic state. >> america's leading the world in the fight to degrade and ultimately destroy the group known as isil. on monday our brave men and women in uniform begin air strikes against isil targets in syria and they weren't alone. i made it clear that america would act as part of a broad coalition, and we were joined in this action by friends and partners including arab nations. >> mr. obama also says america

is leading the fight to contain and combat the ebola epidemic in west africa. a race for a silicon valley congressional district that pits two democrats against each other is getting a lot of attention. longtime incouple dent mike honda is being challenged by ro khanna. honda easily won the primary. as laura anthony found, the challenger is now claiming there have been campaign ethics violations. it goes against the very fabric of our democracy. >> reporter: the challenger, the longtime san jose democrat mike honda, ro khanna is trying to capitalize on allegations that a honda staffer offered prospective campaign donors prime seats it at the state department function in early 2013. >> what we're saying is no one is allowed to trade on the public assets that belong to the taxpayers, the state department, for personal gain in a political

campaign. >> reporter: the allegations stem from e-mails honda's chief of staff alleged ly wrote from her personal gis mail account to the then campaign chairman. they referred to possible invitees to a state department roundtable and as potential campaign donors. in an e-mail to abc 7 news hohn da's current campaign chief wrote, the fact is this challenger has orchestrated a fake news event in a desperate attempt to get publicity to save his campaign from another failure at the polls. nonetheless, two elected city officials from hohn da's district have written a letter complaining to the office of congressional ethics. >> the details in my opinion indicate a pay to play arrangement coordinated by congressman honda's chief of staff. >> reporter: he trailed by 20 points. the two have a debate scheduled for october 6.

in fremont, laura anthony, abc 7 news. new details this morning in the investigation of san francisco 49ers defensive end ray mcdonald. prosecutors have canceled monday's tentative arraignment on domestic violence charges. it's the second time the santa clara district attorney's office has canceled mcdonald's arraignment hearing since he was arrest ed late last month after police reported advisable injuries to his fiancee. the d.a.'s office issued a tweet on its twitter page saying the investigation into mcdonald continues and there will be no new court date unless or until charges are filed. the owners of safari west, the african themed wildlife park, are in talks of selling. according to the press democrat, the owners may sell the 400-acre property to a conservation organization. the organization, which has not been named, will continue to run the preserve. a safari west spokesperson says talks are in serious but early

stages and no deal is in place. but if the sale goes through, operations at safari west are expected to continue uninterr t uninterrupted. a sad development in a story you've seen only on abc 7 news about a number of starving horses in a field in morgan hill. we have learned that one of those horses has died. abc 7 news reporter david louie broke this story on monday and has the latest. >> reporter: of the 11 horses mon da hardeman bought and rescued earlier this week one was not originally part of the deal. a 9 to 12-month-old colt. she insisted he be included because of his condition. he was emaciated, an estimated 75 pounds underweight and monica's instincts were right. there was much more that was wrong with him. the horse died it at the equine rescue center before the veterinarian could examine the 11 horses. a postmortem procedure showed the young horse had a heavy infestation of parasites. they compete with the horse for

food and eventually spread to the lungs. the condition can be serious for young horses. glenn froistad is the caring for the horses. >> they compete for nutrition that the horse would be getting if the worms weren't getting it, and the worst case scenario there are so many of them that you can get an impaction. >> reporter: other horseses are under weight but not in serious condition. monica hardeman believes, in her opinion, the death reflects the lack of care the horses were gettinging. >> i knew we had to get to the bottom of what was really going on and it's senseless. there's no reason for him to have died that way. >> reporter: three other horses are blind. >> horses sometimes fight and nobody fought. they all stood around me and i was kind of nervous. i have blind horses and everything around me. are they going to start fighting? no.

wet weather the past two days is really helping firefighters make significant progress in fighting the king fire east of sacramento. it burned more than 97,000 acres, bigger than the city of san jose. thankfully it's now 78% c contained. evacuation orders for two communities have been downgraded from mandatory to voluntary and only 300 structures remain threatened. that is down from 12,000. the king fire is one of the largest of the year and has cost more than $50 million to fight so far. they did just get some help from the rain. we got some help from the rain as well. >> yeah. and fire danger is going to

alcatraz is undergoing a big change. an exhibit opens today that many say is the most anticipated contemporary art show of the year. but it's also one of the most controversial. abc 7 news reporter elissa harg f ton has the story. >> reporter: arrested in 2011 for tax evasion, the passport was confiscated. he cannot leave the country but is making his voice heard around the world through activism and art. alcatraz known as one of the world's most notorious prisons is now doubling as a gallery for

seven of his pieces. the exhibit is called at large. >> this is an amazing place. what an incredible history this island has. it's a place of detainment. it's a place of protest. >> reporter: the curator cheryl hains traveled to bring pieces back. it brings up questions of human rights. the display with wind includes a giant rainbow paper dragon kite. >> the dragon and kite represent power and freedom. they're displayed here in a building used for prison labor. if one person who comes to this exhibition walks away with a better understanding of what freedom really means, this project will then be great success. >> reporter: another work is made entirely of legos. more than one million pieces, many detained for political reasons. the artist plays with sound. ♪ visitors can list en to music o

poetry by prisoners echoing from cell walls. only visitors who buy a ticket to alcatraz can see for no extra charge. on the island it runs saturday through april of next year. in san francisco elissa ha harrington, abc 7 news. taking a look at our weather today, you showed us sun on the golden gate and snow in the sierras. >> it's crazy. the snow level will be rising throughout the day but, yeah, they picked up 5-6 inches above 8,000 feet in reno, above reno there. also 4 to 5 inches above 7,000 feet in the sierra and, you know, over an inch in south lake. so that translates into 3 to 4 ins was of snow. the snow water equivalent. we're looking at more to come in the mountains. locally it is quiet here with that fog clearing or 0 the low cloudiness. in the mountains, you can see from bear valley a rain/snow mix

and over into nevada, yeah, a rainy day here with temperatures only in the 40s as that low pulls out. from our fau tour tower camera, look at all the sunshine here and mild temperatures. 60 downtown. 64 at the airport. no delays. san jose is at 60. good morning, morgan hill. 58 for you. half moon bay, 63 degrees. this is the snow i've been talking about in the mountains. just a gorgeous shot here just in the 30s from truckee to the airport. and temperatures will be very chilly today but wouldn't you know it by october, which is the middle of next week, temperatures will be back up into the 70s. so we're looking at warming temperatures in the mountains, in the bay area, much of california for the rest of september, early october, and that takes us into above average reading. 60 in concord. 63 in livermore and san jose this morning the clouds hanging on here but not for long. so overall partly cloudy. a sunny and mild weekend with numbers running anywhere from about five degrees below average, but we'll make up for

it. monday is the day of transition and then into tuesday you'll really feel the warmth. low pressure, the trough, you can see it in the mountains from eastern california, western nevada, and that will be the inclement weather with the showers and thunderstorms and some dicey driving conditions for sure. so be very careful if you're heading there or friends and family heading home. southern california a different story. it's windy but sunny and back home we have high pressure offshore. it will take several days for it to build in but once it does, the winds will shift to an offshore component. you know what that means for october. we are going to warm up quickly. 79 in fresno. 81 in sacramento. look at the numbers here. 48 in the northern sierra. 53 in yoet mice and the showers will extend as far south as the southern sierra. really wide ranging temperatures statewide. low 70s palo alto and santa cruz today.

all right. grab those tickets. the winning numbers from last night's $93 million mega millions true. 17-26-35-46-62. the mega number 9. but sadly nobody picked all six. so tuesday night's jackpot grows to $105 million. pets decked out in wild and crazy costumes will take to the streets for the 11th annual pet parade. for the first time the parade will include a fund-raising component. they are partnering with the hope program which provides medical and behavioral care for animals prior to adoption. every participant will receive a souvenir ribbon with special ribbons awarded in certain categories like best dressed pet. the parade gets under way at 10:00 on broadway avenue. lisa, who is heading out to the
