good evening. i'm katie marzullo. new at 11:00, police have cleared 16 squatters from a san francisco building. they weren't just seeking temporary shelter but looking to live there in the long term and it took nearly a month for the building's owner to realize they were there. abc 7 reporter lisa ammin glessian is live with more. >> reporter: the police rounded everyone up this afternoon after the property owner's agent noticed that back gate behind me wide open. it's now lokds. but as you can see, a lot of the squatters' stuff has been lined

up and pulled out of the building. many of the people who were living inside are now outside. they're watching their things and figuring out their next move. 16 squatters living illegally in this six-unit building were forced out by police today. >> i haven't seen anything this big only because most buildings of this size are not left vacant for this long. >> one officer called this a well-organized squatting operation. the three-story building had stood empty for six months while the new owner figured out what type of renovations to do, but word spread quickly and unattended, unguarded building was up for grabs. >> the idea as to fix the place up, put things in our name, and see how it went. you know, because this is what we understood to be the legal means of going about it. >> reporter: in other words, the squatters had a plan. to stay here long term. without permission to go inside we found drug paraphernalia, bikes, power tools, high-end

electronics. police think most of it is stolen. every unit had power and running water. and it's all been for free. the owner's agent did not want to talk on camera but thinks the squatters started moving in september 1st. still some who came in and out of here knew something was fishy. that's why this woman only stayed for a few days. >> i'd much rather be outside than inside illegally. >> reporter: police did allow most of the people to take out some of their belongings, and there was only one arrest for an unrelated warrant. the property owner is choosing not to file trespassing charges. in san francisco, lisa aminute gull ezian, abc 7 news. developing news tonight. san months police are on the lookout for a gunman after a deadly shooting. it 457d at 9:120 this evening on azucar avenue near roder road. police arrived to find one person shot once. that person died at the scene. right now detectives are talking

to witnesses and gathering evidence. this is the 29th homicide of the year in san jose. rescue crews saved a man who suffered a nkd emergency after a swim in the san francisco bay today. the 50-year-old man was taking part in the alcatraz swim with the centurions this morning when he came out of the water and collapsed at aquatic park. there were several events happening at the time of the rescue including a swim. some medical staff were already on scene. we have new details tonight on a fire that destroyed a home that was being built for habitat for humanity in san francisco. habitat for humanity canceled a workday for 100 volunteers at the site today. the non-profit says the fire may impact the building's schedule for the next few weeks. but it is still expecting to meet its goal of moving people into the habitat terrace by 2016. the fire started around 11:00 last night at a 28-unit building on sagmore street near alamane boulevard. two other homes were damaged. as firefighters make

significant progress battling a wildfire east of sacramento, a new concern emerges. the fire has burned more than 97,000 acres near pollock pines. that's an area larger than the city of san jose. the fire is now 84% contained. evacuation orders for two communities have been downgraded. 300 structures remain threatened. that's down from 12,000. even though the past two days of rain have helped firefighters, the u.s. forest service is now worried about ash and mud polluting the streams and rivers. >> if that water quality is compromised, just the cost of cleaning that water. potential threat of contaminants in that water is a big concern. >> to prevent ash from getting into the water crews will spread straw on the ground. the u.s. frost service expects it will take years maybe decades to restore the land. that cool wet weather really helping firefighters, but gone as quickly as it arrived.

tomorrow. in the social media landscape there's facebook, twitter, instagram, and now something called ello. over the last two weeks the upstart platform has been growing fast and it bills itself as the anti-facebook. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana live in the newsroom with more. sergio. >> reporter: well, katie, facebook has recently been in the headlines for issues surrounding identities on personal profiles. so some users have been looking for an alternative. enter ello. it's been around for a few months, but right now lots of people are hoping to get an invite to join. ian surer is one of the lucky ones who's been invited to join ello. he covers social media for cnet. >> people who find facebook to be too crowded, too complex, they don't like fb fbs for whatever reason, this is a place they can go. >> reporter: he gave us a short tour through the bare bones social media site. it looks like a little bit instagram and a touch of pinterest. >> a couple days ago i spoke with the ceo. he he said they were getting roughly 35,000 sign-ups per hour, which is pretty big, but

it's nothing close to 1.3 billion that facebook is living in, right? >> reporter: the ceo, paul budman, says ello is designed to be stripped down and simple. it's a site with a rebellious attitude with a manifesto vowing not to sell users' personal data to third parties. some of the interest in ello is bei ing boosted by the recent dust-up between facebook and drag queens over identity. >> i've gotten tons of people asking me if i'd like an invite to ello. they just 150e78d to come out of nowhere. it's kind avenue amazing. >> reporter: sister roma with the sisters of perpetual indulgence has been leading the campaign against the facebook policy that forces users to list their real names in profiles. but she has not signed up for ello yet. >> i know facebook is a great ally of the lgbt community and they have a problem, they have a policy that is unfair and discriminatory and they need to address it and i need facebook to get that message out. ironically. >> reporter: she says ello may become a smaller alternative

and i can't think straight. >> reporter: across town the stage is being set for napa rocks, a sunday concert to raise money for quake victims, featuring the music of michael franti and spearhead. promoters say napa needs help. >> a lot of people don't realize just how many people are struggling, how many businesses are struggling. there are 16 businesses alone that are still closed down in napa. >> reporter: businesses and homeowners who are trying to rebuild and determined to make it happen. in napa cornel bernard, abc 7 news. a san jose woman who helped track down a serial arsonist is now in the running for a special honor. dee berigan is one of 11 finalists for the national good neighbor award. this january when an arsonist terrorized san jose by setting 13 homes on fire she helped set up a neighborhood watch. and that included gathering information and scheduling shifts. >> it just felt right to give a shout out on next door to say hey, this is the time to get to know your neighbor and form a bond. it was a key to our safety.

>> reporter: authorities say her effort may have lehelped stop me fires. a neighbor eventually got video of the suspect which led to an arrest. the winner will be named tomorrow, which is national good neighbor day. you need a drink dropped off at your doorstep? there's an app for that, and it is now available in san francisco. the app is called saucy, and it promises to deliver booze. even cups and ice. to you. in 20 to 30 minutes. okay, but what about underaged drinking? well, the founder and ceo says all drivers are trained in checking i.d.s and in fact they have to scan the i.d. to complete the transaction. he also believes that delivering alcohol will prevent certain cases of drunk driving. so the obvious application is having alcohol delivers to your party, right? but in l.a., where the service has been available for a few months now, people are getting creative. >> you know, we had a woman order a vodka cranberry to her hair salon while she was having her hair done and the driver checked her i.d., scanned, delivered it while she was

francisco. they planned to set up water and electricity in their names so it would have been more difficult to legally remove them. the owner decided not to press charges for trespassing. one person was arrested for an unrelated warrant. a man nearly died today at the alcatraz swim with the centurions. the 50-year-old came out of the water at aquatic park and collapsed. medical staff, though, was nearby and they responded quickly, which may have saved the man's life. he. the king fire burning in el dorado county is now 84% contained. cold and wet weather helped crews gain ground on the fire. it's now threatening just 300 structures instead of 12,000 that were in danger earlier this week. more flight delays and cancellations following a fire yesterday at a flight control center in illinois. chicago's two major airports scrubbed more than 700 flights today. sfo was not affected but oakland international and mineta san jose each did have a few flights delayed. mary maloney has an update.

>> this chaos mixed with outrage and that's not a good thing. >> reporter: frustrated travelers are facing another day of delayed and canceled flights as the result of a fire at an air traffic control center. according ought chica ining to department of aviation more than 600 flights had been kangsed saturday and customers are advised to expect delays throughout the day. on friday the blaze shut down operations at chicago's o'hare and midway airports. more than 2,000 flights were canceled between the two. those cancellations caused a ripple effect across the nation. >> i got an alert on my phone. it said the flight was canceled. >> i was going to try to find another flight but i'm just giving up. >> reporter: atlanta's hartsfield jackson international airport had 70 cancellations and new york's lagardia airport had to cancel 56 flights. >> there are no indications of terrorists. there's no reason to believe that anyone else is involved at this time. >> reporter: police say an employee, brian howard, intentionally set the fire. first responders found him in the control center's basement

attempting to take his own life. howard survived and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. he's been charged with one count of destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities. a court date has not yet been scheduled. if convicted howard faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. mary maloney, abc 7 news. a ferguson, missouri police officer was shot tonight. the officer was checking out a community center after dispatch received a call someone opened fire and shot her in the arm. officers have swarmed the area to search for the shooter. as you know, there's been tension between ferguson police and the community since an officer killed an unarmed teenager in early august. a suspected con man accused of bilking people in the central valley out of millions of dollars has turned up in a south african jail in connection with a bizarre international crime ring. stephanie stone from our sister station in fresno explains the charges against him. >> reporter: ask the people he's
