good wednesday morning to you. we begin with the nation's top doctors scrambling over the first case of ebola diagnosed in america. >> a man traveling from west africa who arrived in texas 11 days ago has been put into strict isolation inside a hospital in dallas. abc's elizabeth hurd just filed this report from dallas. >> reporter: it was the news america had been dreading. >> an individual traveling from liberia has been diagnosed with ebola in the united states. >> reporter: the centers for disease control confirming the first case of ebola in the u.s. a patient who recently travelled from liberia to dallas is sick with the disease. the unidentified man is critically ill and has been in isolated at texas health presbyterian hospital in dallas since sunday. he began feeling sick four or five days after arriving in the u.s. >> the likelihood for this individual to have spread it on an airplane are basically zero.

he was asymptomatic. meaning he had no symptoms while he was traveling. >> reporter: the head of the cdc is optimistic they will control ebola from spreading. >> the bottom line here is that i have no doubt that we will control this importation, or this case of ebola, so that it does not spread widely in this country. >> reporter: health authorities have begun tracking down family and friends who may have had close contact with the patient and could be at risk of contracting the virus. >> follow them for 21 days, if any of them develop a fever, they'll go in isolation and get tested. >> reporter: this is the largest ebola outbreak ever, with more than 3,000 people across africa having died so far. president obama has sent in the u.s. military to help. in the meantime, american troops have broken ground for a field hospital and mobile ebola labs should be up and running in liberia this week.

elizabeth, abc news, dallas. >> thank you. so three paramedics and several e.r. workers are under observation for coming into contact with the patient. and a team from the cdc is at that hospital. our dallas station also spotted this. the ambulance used to take the ebola patient to the hospital on saturday is now quarantined and roped off with biohazard tape. later on "gma" we will have much more on this ebola patient and a full update from the head of the cdc. president obama is keeping tabs on isis has u.s. and its partners pound targets in iraq and syria. the president met with his national security council last night to get an update on the air strikes hours after the british military joined the fight. the royal air force carried outs it first attacks against the terror group, using tornado fighters jets against kurdish forces in northwest iraq. security here at home

meantime seriously thrown into question. the nation's most elite police force, the secret service, reeling this morning from another epic security failure. this time involving the president's own personal safety. abc's susan saulny with the latest. >> reporter: this morning, details of yet another breach of presidential security. a man with a criminal history and a gun was allowed inside an elevator with president obama during a recent visit to atlanta. >> don't let somebody get close to the president. >> reporter: that revelation coming one day after blistering bipartisan criticism of the secret service on capitol hill. lawmakers demanded answers how this knife-wielding intruder was able to make his way unimpeded through security into the executive mansion. >> this is disgraceful. this is absolutely disgraceful that this has happened. >> reporter: piercing five layers of security. jumping the fence without being stopped by patrol officers. no agents close enough to tackle him as he ran 70 yards to the white house. no attack dog released.

s.w.a.t. and sniper teams never engaging. and finally an unlocked front door. the intrusion did not end until gonzalez made his way to the east room and was tackled by an off-duty agent who just happened to be there. the director of the secret service took full responsibility. >> we are all outraged in the secret service of how this incident came to pass. >> reporter: but lawmakers found her answers unsatisfying, calling for an independent investigation. >> i believe you have done a disservice to the president of the united states. >> reporter: their ridicule was biting. >> have you heard of these guys? >> reporter: omar gonzalez is due in court later today to face charges of breaking into the white house. if convicted, he could face ten years in prison. t.j., reena. >> susan saulny in washington. thank you so much. four children in massachusetts have suffered paralysis after a respiratory illness. this after ten similar cases in colorado. the cdc is investigating whether the paralysis is related to enterovirus d-68.

but so far there are no definitive links. a student is in custody in kentucky this morning after a shooting at a louisville high school. one student was shot, but he is expected to survive. police called it an isolated accident but wouldn't say if the victim was targeted. the shooting profrmed -- prompted a school lockdown and evacuation as worried parents waited for word. and at a high school in north carolina, a student was shot and wounded by a fellow student just minutes before classes started. the student put down the gun after firing two shots, walked into the principal's office and waited for police. they say the shooting was something personal between the two students. there have now been 86 school shootings since the massacre in newtown, connecticut. the mayor of a los angeles suburb has been shot to death after a family disagreement. the sheriff's department said bell garden's mayor daniel crespo got into an argument with his wife and his 19-year-old son. he tried to intervene. crespo and his son started fighting. his wife got the gun and shot her husband several times.

he died at a hospital. she was released after being questioned by police. and overseas, maritime traffic almost stopped in one of the world's most strategic waterways over a rare collision of two giant super tankers. take a look at this. two container ships. one german, the other was from singapore, collided at the mouth of the suez canal in egypt. the german freighter suffered a 65-foot dent as three of its containers tumbled into the water. an investigation is underway. luckily, no injuries to report. look now at this nation's weather. severe storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, even tornados from colorado to the great lakes. isolated showers will fall over the louisiana gulf coast, south florida and parts of the northeast. >> temperatures in the 60s and 70s along the northern tier and the inner mountain west. 80s and 90s in the midwest and south. coming up, new numbers just out. the cars that attract the most speeding tickets. the list will surprise you. plus for the first time, an
