live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. a lot of berkeley workers are making more money today than they made yesterday. the city's new minimum wage increases kicks in on the first day of october. berkeley wage increase today is just the first in a series of approved hikes. amy hollyfield joins us from berkeley with the details and reaction. amy? >> yes, some of the business owners on college avenue, small shops, say they are not big box stores but they feel like they are being treated that way. some workers are feeling pretty

happy. luiz made $9.50 an hour working the overnight shift at 7-eleven and now he makes $10 because of the minimum wage increase. >> looking forward to it. more money in my pocket. the more i can pay child support and the more i can have left over. >> he is grateful the city council voted to help people like him but it is hard to stretch $10 an hour in the bay area. >> taxes are going up, everything is going up, and $10 isn't as much as it used to be, back in the day. >> small business owners say this is not a burden they can handle. >> i understand that people need to make a living wage and we do agree with that. we all need to make a living. but the small businesses are also struggling to make a living. >> her small shop cannot absorb the cost and she will have to some of it on to the customers.

12th spreading to three buildings before firefighters could put it out. firefighters say it took a while to get through the property because the person has so much stuff stacked inside. unfortunately, a cat did not survive. the cause is "under investigation." police are investigating a deadly shooting outside an oakland night club. at 1:15 a 27-year-old got into a fight with another person in the area of 11th and clay or at some point the second person pulled a gun and shot the victim in the stomach where he died. the suspect got away. police are reviewing the footage for more information. lawmakers in the bay area are celebrating the signing of a bill cracking down on the testing of rape kits. the governor signed the bill yesterday and police have 20 days to collect evidence in a rape case and send it to the laboratory. the laboratory has four months to process the rape kit and enter it into a national
