5:03 am
it took hours for the san francisco utility commission to shut off the water supply to that pipe. in the meantime, firefighters built a barrier to divert the gushing water into storm drains. many families tried it making their own water barriers, putting pieces of wood against garage doors and that seemed to help. the public utilities commission just downgraded the number of homes that were flooded. >> as we go around and start doing the assessment, that number may change because some homes are still -- like, people are still sleeping so we can't get access. from our count, looks to be six to seven. >> reporter: several cars also got caught up in the mess. now, this car you're looking at was sitting right over the water main break and a sink hole started forming around it. so several hours ago, a tow truck had to come in and haul it away. in the next hour or so, crews are expected to start digging up the pavement to repair the pipe. they expect that'll take between four and six hours. during that time, about three

coast, 83 to 89. don't forget, it's a spare the air day also. how about friday morning traffic? here's leyla. >> speaking of spare the air, might want to consider taking transit, car pooling, reduce some of the pollution today. here's a look at our san rafael drive as you come southbound 101 up to 580. traffic moving smoothly there. northbound very, very light. once you get to the golden gate bridge, it's moving along without any problems there. the construction we had earlier, they were picking up cones. that has ended. so we're looking at pretty clear conditions. as we take you over to highway 24 in the eastbound direction, we'll have lanes blocked off until 6:00 from oak hill road to pleasant hill road for some construction. >> thank you, leyla. breaking news, san francisco firefighters are busy right now helping homeowners pump out water from their houses after a water main break this morning caused serious flooding in one neighborhood. tiffany wilson is live in the bay view. getting better, tiffany. >> reporter: yeah, it is getting better, kristen.

that 12-inch water main break happened about midnight. you can see a lot of activity right here behind me. this is actually good news. these are crews who are cleaning up an earlier barrier that had been made to help divert the water that was gushing down the street. now you can see that water has slowed down. so they are cleaning it up. again, the crews were able to shut off the water supply to that pipe several hours ago. so the situation now is much more in control. about half a dozen homes were flooded and some families woke up to flooded garages. others woke up overnight to flooded basements. but with the firefighters able to create the barrier that's now being cleaned up, the flooding didn't impact as many homes as initially expected. at firts it was reported that several dozen homes had been flooded. now it's down to about six or seven. tyrone with the san francisco public utilities commission has been here all night long. what's the situation now and
5:33 am
what's happening next? >> right new we have two pumps trying to pump down the amount of water so we can get access to the pipe. we can't see the pipe yet because the area is still full of water. so we're working just to pump that water out. once we can get access to it, we'll start the repairs. we do know it was definitely an old pipe that broke. it was a 1953 cast iron pipe. those tend to be the ones that break due to old age. >> reporter: at this point, for families living in the area who don't have a water supply, what's the timeline you can give them for this pipe to be repaired and their water to be turned back on? >> at this point, i can't give an eta on when the repairs are going to be done. the fact they haven't reached the pipeline yet doesn't mean they know what the repairs are going to be. >> reporter: tyrone, thank you so much for being here. we'll check back in with him as the situation develops. if you have to travel through the bay view, plan on detouring around this area of keith and key this morning. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news.

5:35 am
sick, stay home. happening this morning, investigators will be back at the scene of a fire that burned three homes in oakland. started just after 7:30 last night near mills college. firefighters arrived and found a two-story home with flames coming from the top floor. it soon spread to two surrounding homes. one homeowner says he's just thankful his family got out safely. >> i think my son and my wife are, you know, devastated. i'm devastated, of course. but my family got out safe. i got them. so i don't have a house right now, but you can rebuild that, right? so we're okay. >> the fire brought down a power line, which landed on one of the fire trucks. the firefighter at the truck managed to get out of the way. took crews more than two hours to get the fire under control. berkeley police are investigating three reports of sexual assaults at uc berkeley. at least two say they were attacked at fromti tfraternitie. students are just now finding out about them. police have made no arrests. the names of the frat houses
5:36 am
involved are not being released. some students say they're disappointed with the way this is being handled. >> i would expect to have received a notification from the university, but i haven't received anything regarding any form of sexual assault. and we actually live on frat row. it's very concerning. >> berkeley police issued this statement. sexual assault investigations are complex and demand sensitive and professional investigation. on monday, governor brown signed the "yes means yes" sexual assault law. if anyone is under the influence, they're automatically assumed to not be able to give consent. new information in the domestic violence case against ray mcdonald. police have finished their investigation into allegations he hit his pregnant fiance at their home. the case has been turned over to prosecutors more than a month later. abc 7 news has learned one of the things that complicated this case is mcdonald apparently called a san jose police officer
5:37 am
around the time the initial 911 call was made. that officer went to the home. reliable sources inside the police department told abc 7 news reporter vic lee this officer also works as security at 49ers games. it's up to the d.a. now to decide whether or not to charge mcdonald or conduct its own investigation. 49ers say mcdonald will play while the league process continues. happening today in san francisco, bay area fishermen plan to protest a $7.5 billion water bond on the november ballot. they warn proposition one won't solve california's water problem and would destroy salmon and crab populations. it would authorize billions in borrowing to play for reservoirs, ground water cleanup, and habitat restoration. they argue building more dams to hold water we don't have is misplaced spending. it's 5:37. yes, yes, yes, the giants take the next step to advance in the playoffs today, sending jake peavy to the mound against the washington nationals in game one of the national league division
5:38 am
series. the giants acquired peavy mid season from the red sox. he struggled a bit at first but went 6-1 down the stretch and brings a maniacal level of intensity. peavy says he knows stephen strasburg, who will pitch for the nats today, very well. >> he's a great competitor. we all know how talented this guy is. he can really make it hard on you. i'll do all i can to give him some good at-bats. he's a good athlete as well. the only time i'll have to worry about him is when he gets in there and i'll have to make some good pitches. >> the giants have won eight straight playoff games going back to their world championship series in 2012. so the giants open the division series in washington, d.c., today at noon. we're so thankful we'll be off work by then and can watch. game two follows tomorrow in d.c. at 2:30 p.m. then the series comes to at&t park as hunter pence promised it would for game three on monday. starting time hasn't been announced yet, but we'll keep you posted.
