>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, october 25th. let's start a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. no fog to speak of. temperatures in the low 50s in the north bay. good radiational cooling again. from our sutro tower camera you see it is nice and clear with numbers ranging right now from mid-40s half moon bay, 58 in san jose with 62 downtown. so your forecasted to calls for another warm to hot day inland, but not much in the way of fog. it will be bumped up right against the marin coast. we will still see sunshine at our beaches and that will allow temperatures to climb into the upper 70s around point raise,

stinson beach. look for 80 san francisco. low to mid-80s oakland and still some 90s but not as hot and no heat advisories to pass along this morning. carolyn. >> thank you. although today will be a little cooler, as lisa just said, it will still be searching around the bay area. health officials are urging all of us to take it easy, maybe head for somewhere cooler. one of those places could be the beach. yesterday the sand was jammed with people trying to beat the heat. but inland cooler meant ice cream as abc7 news reporter tiff any wilson explains. >> nothing better than this. >> jim is visiting friends in the bay area. >> i thought it would be cold up here, you know, bay area, it's colder than south cal. >> not so. >> i think it's one of the hottest conditions i've seen it. >> clayton and his family suffered the same discomfort. >> it's really hot.

freeway, easily. >> tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> you can track the high temperatures anytime with the abc news weather app. you can get it free from apple's app store or on google play. developing fuse from downtown oakland where a fight and shooting early this morning have left three people shot, one fatally. oakland police tell abc7 news their officer saw a large group fighting it intersection of 14th and franklin street just after 1:30 this morning. the officers heard gunshots three people were shot. one died on the way to the hospital. the third showed up at a local emergency room. all three victims were adult males. police say the fight and shooting happened outside a nightclub in the area. no one has been arrested. police in san jose are looking for two thieves who left a man tied up for 16 hours. they broke into his home at midnight saturday and tied him up. they made off with several items

from the home. finally, around 4:15 yesterday afternoon, about 16 hours later, a friend checked on the man and found him bound up. the victim is this his 60s. he was taken to the hospital to be checked out. police say he has not been able to give them a good description of the thieves. police this hayward have arrested a man suspected of killing his mother. police were called to the home on laport avenue near mount eden high school just before 7:00 last night. they found the mother stabbed to death. two dogs were also found dead, although police have not said how they died. >> nearly 100 cars were hit by smash is grab burglars at a popular san francisco tourist spots and police eye signed a full-time inspector to the case. the top of the peak offers breathtaking views of the city. most park in the small lot adjacent to the overlook.

someone has broken into 97 cars there since june. one of the victims, tour guide naomi beck. >> probably 20 feet away looking at the view. all of a sudden we heard a crash. looked back and someone knocked in the window, stole my purse and drove off. >> they are hitting real fast. i mean, in some instances it's been like less than a minute. >> police are reminding the public to keep valuables out of sight while away from their cars >> a fast-moving virus has claimed the life of a child in new jersey and now a second student at the same school has become ill. here in california 14 children have been infected by enterovirus b-68 so far. in the bay area there are how five cases. we have the latest. >> eli waller, a four-year-old from hamilton, new jersey, the

virus' latest victim. he tested positive, confirming the cause of death. >> i'm sure you must all know i'm kind of upset that there is unbearable pain and grief that they are suffering. >> the cdc said at least four others infected with the virus here in the united states have died like eli all in september. but it's unclear if the virus is to blame. health officials first noticed a spike in less pirrer to illness in children this early august with symptoms so harsh it was sending children to emergency rooms in droves. enter enterovirus. it vick end 500 people n 143 states and washington d.c. and almost all of them are young. and adding to those worries, dozens of young patients suffering from muscle weakness

kashmir could be devastated because people are desperate and with the winter months coming the fear is the death toll will only rise, abc7 news. >> the ebola crisis will be one of the main topics later this morning on "this week." the director offering residents the centers for disease control, tom friedman, will discuss the latest development in contain the first case of ebola diagnosed on u.s. soil. it airs at 8:00 this morning here on abc7. san francisco might become the first in the nation to take another step for workers rights. first they gave employees the right to ask for family-friendly schedules. now it will consider requiring some companies to post employee work schedules two weeks in advance. >> it's not enough to have the minimum wage. we really see this as the next fight. >> workers rights advocates are praising the latest move by san francisco supervisors to try

to help people like francis cruz, a retail workers who finds out at the last minute what his schedule will be. >> i'm like being held hostage basically. >> his situation is not unique. 59% of american workers are paid hourly. often meaning they have no control over their schedules or their lives. >> people should know when they take a job what can i expect in terms of minimum hours, what should i know i can rely on. >> labor practices have changed with many companies using sophisticated software to plug in employees at the last minute. >> today supervisor david chu introduced legislation targeting chain stores. in places like starbucks or target or walgreens have at least 20 employees, there would be new requirements. >> first, when an employee is hired, an employer will be required to provide a good faith estimate of the minimum number of hours that employer would be

expected to work. secondly, formula retail employers would be required to post a schedule 14 days in advance. >> workers would receive extra pay if those mandates are violated. the chamber of commerce has concerns. >> because anytime you legislate on the way people operate their businesses, it's a problem trying to draft one piece of legislation that fits numerous different business models, both size, as well as type. >> and right now there are more than 1200 companies with 35,000 workers in san francisco. they could be affected. >> some lost the line, others ride it. the city of fullsom has completed the first part of the trail. it connects 40 miles of the urban trail system from old downtown to fulsom lake.

90 degrees. today expecting some cooler temperatures, but really thanks to the strong -- not thanks to the strong push or the winds because it's not here. we will warm quickly, and once again temperatures will be well above normal. 7:08 is the sunrise. it sets at 6:47. it's 11 hours 47 minutes of day light. each and every day from here, right through until thursday, we will drop a few degrees. then the numbers are going to go back up. it will take some time to re-establish that typical on shore push. so right now we are looking at the clear conditions. sutro tower camera. it's very mild. san francisco in the low 06ths. 63 at the airport and 48 -- 58 in oakland but we have 48 half moon bay. so it is cool with the radiational cooling and numbers cooler around parts of the bay. but still we will manage to is he temperatures again into the 90s. from our exploratorium camera,

more 40s from napa to petaluma, and 50 in santa rosa. 24 hours ago we were warmer. we are six degrees cooler this morning at the airport, and at the coast 4 degrees is 3 degrees cooler in san jose. so with a little bit more of an on shore push, that should keep temperatures out of the 90s at the coast, but still at about 80 degrees downtown. so still warm to hot today. cooler at the coast. mid-70s should do it around half moon bay. cooler than that, ocean beach. but still mild and we will look for cooler temperatures right en through the middle of the week. but we still will remain very october-like through this next weekend. so as this high pressure begins to slowly slide to the east, we are going to get that light on shore push today. then eventually by the middle of the week we will have some of the low clouds and fog but tell get awfully close to the coast, but pull back. that means a sunny beach day

again today with 90 degrees in san jose. ed 4 in morgan hill. upper 80s in sunnyvale. so this is just a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. you were 95 in redwood city. today forecasting a high of 90. still the 70s here so a nice day from half moon bay to pacifica with the light winds. maybe a few patches of fog near the sunset. mid-70s daly city. san francisco 80 today. and out of the mid-90s. out of the triple digits for cloverdale, 78 stinson and 92 vallejo. oakland 96, but not 92 so it should feel a little better. inland, it's all about the heat, low 90s. pleasanton and walnut creek. we will look for a low numbers in santa clara and low 80s and upper 80s by this afternoon. go niners. the accuweather seven-day forecast then, temperatures still warm today and tomorrow a bit more of a sea breeze. keeping the numbers a little cooler at the coast and around the bay. notice that slow, slow gradual

l.a. suburb of kanoga park. one person was pronounced dead at the scene. the driver was taken to the hospital and will be evaluated to see if alcohol was a factor. police aren't sure how the accident happened or how many of the injured were inside that doughnut shop. princess anna and queen else saw of "frozen game" have landed on the small screen in the fairy tale book of pinocchio. the frozen stars are warping things up on the sunday night abc show "once upon a time." >> everything is new so it's super exciting. it's nerve-racking. >> this actress stepped into the book of storybook to play ana for a few season of "once upon a time." >> please, plea, i want to be

>> good morning. with a look from our tower camera, it's nice and clear. but we are still in the 60s in san francisco. the radiational cooling allowing us to drop into the 40s at the coast and also mid-40s in petaluma and novato and between 58 in san jose, 59 morgan hill. high pressure still firmly in control. a few patches of fog along the north coast today and a very light west wind. not enough to cool everyone down, just enough to shave a few degrees off the coastline today. 70s there. 80 in san francisco. mid- and upper-80s in the east bay and 90s return in the south bay for the game this afternoon. itit will be quite warm. we will talk about the gradual cooling trend as we get into the work week ahead and how long we have to wait to get back to normal. carolyn. >> thank you. a dramatic appeal from the parents of an american hostage by islamic extremists in sierra

some individuals who traveled in the ambulance. we couldn't be 100% certain that other people in that ambulance may not have been exposed. and, therefore, those individuals will also be monitored for the 21-day period. >> duncan arrived in dallas two weeks ago after flying from west africa. he went to an emergency room but was sent home. duncan returned to the hospital a week ago and has been in isolation ever since. and this, doctors in massachusetts saying they will know by tomorrow when a man successfully treated for ebola and released from the hospital has had a relapse. doctor richard sake raw, who contracted the virus while in the africa is back in the hospital. they have pink eye up ander respiratory infection. they believe his ebola has not returned. a mother in sweden has become a medical first.

she gave birth after undergoing a womb transplant. she received a uterus from the close family friend last year. her surgeon just announced she gave birth to a healthy paper in september. the baby is now home with the family and doing well. doctors say the experimental procedure could create new option for women who lost their uterus to cancer or were born without one. a biomedical expert at stanford points out, however, that there are still serious risks. >> you have to expos the donor to risk. you have to have other live person have her uterus removed, with i is a significant risk, of no benefit to her, and it's very unproven. there are risks to the recipient and there are unknown risks to any children that would be born. >> he believes other options such as surrogatescy are better, and he said it's unlikely scientists will research the procedure here in the u.s.. scientists at three bay area universities have earned the

nation's highest honor for achievement and leadership in advancing science and technology. president obama has announced the recipients. the national metal of science. award december include two scientists from berkeley, two from stanford and one from uc san francisco. milpitas based sand disk founder and another founder received the national metal of technology and invasion. because of demand for better-educated students the state's community colleges soon will be testing a pilot program for four-year bachelor degrees. students won't have to transfer to csu or uc, and they will get a break on tuition. but as abc7 news reporter david louie points out, only specific degree programs will be included. >> the targeted programs include dental hygiene and advanced healthcare such as respiratory

therapy. cupertino is hoping to expand their automotive management program. 112 community colleges will compete for only 15 pilot programs. those chosen will be in areas not duplicated acsu or uc. the benefits are two-fold. students will get a break on tuition a bachelors degree is expected to cost just over $10,000. that amount doesn't even pay for one year at uc and graduates can expect higher pay, especially compared to those with bachelor degrees in liberal arts. >> community college degree in the highly advanced field may provide you with a sale of $70,000 or $80,000. a mastners a liberal arts field may not get you more than $50,000 or $670,000 -- or $60,000. >> many employers require a four-year degree. >> if they were going into certain companies or dental

practices, they would need the bachelors degree. so this will be a great benefit. >> the six year long pilot program is scheduled to begin no later than january, 2017. as many as 70% of their associate degrees program will want to stay on for their bachelors. nicole is one of them. >> having a bachelors, one, a job interview versus an associates, they will pick someone with a bachelors. and also you can do education and makes you look better and show that you care about the career. >> just as schools are competitive, so will be the competition to get one of those 15 slots allotted to the state's community colleges. in los altos hills, abc7 news. >> still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, can we blame climate change for our nation's extreme weather, even the drought? what stanford researchers have discovered. and here's a live look from our east bay hills camera.

stanford have figured out is astonishing. proof that climate change is having an effect on our drought. as reporter wayne freedman explains, a set of number brought a stanford researcher to a remarkable conclusion. >> you are looking at the stanford ph.d. candidate who first discovered the ridiculously resilient ridge. of her of it? let daniel explain. >> one could call it the region of unusually -- but i think ridiculously this is easier to swallow. >> here's it is on computer screen. the high atmosphere pressure in the north pacific, the one that has persisted for two winters now. >> that's the rock in the stream. the big red blob is sitting usually where the jet stream and the form track would normally be. >> and it's the physical cause of california's drought. today daniel published an

academic paper that is the first to connect climate change with the formation of that bridge. ed study is based on an examination of climate models, both existing and hypothetical. in one model he looked at the earth's atmosphere as it exists today with carbon emissions. in another model no carbon emissions at all, a natural atmosphere. >> i don't think it's a permanent condition. but we've shown there's an increased risk that this sort of extreme pressure pattern will occur. >> what does this study by a 25-year-old mean to the rest ofnous a confirmation mostly. another peek into the mechanism behind california's water crisis,ing further proof this is no fluke, it has a cause. wayne freedman, abc7 news. >> well, that drought persists, as we know. >> yep, yep. he certainly knows what he's talking about, that smart person. and we are looking at temperatures today once again above average. low 60s right now.

typically cool this morning. our roof camera featuring a dark look. 7:08 is the sunrise. still warm to hot today for most but we will have cooling at the coast. low to mid-70s from ocean beach, half moon bay and pacifica. that's about as cool as it's going to get. the light on shore flow and we will have plenty of 80s in and around san francisco with 90s not too far off. the cooling trend gets through wednesday, and some neighborhoods will begin to warm back up thursday and everyone warms up friday and saturday. a dominant ridge of high pressure encompassing the eastern pacific. and with that it's not allowing for any of that up-welling, the cooler fog, the marine player. it will slowly ease to the east and as it does a little bit today, we will see temperatures come down a few degrees. take a look at the look ahead in oakland with a high today in the mid-80s. afternoon highs in the low 70s. but we will look for numbers to come down about 6 degrees tomorrow. then upper 70s to mid-70s

through wednesday and thursday about 70 and then friday and saturday we warm back up. but it shouldn't be that warm, as warm as we have been. so san francisco showing the same trend with numbers slowly coming down to about 69 on thursday. average high is 70. then coming back up by friday and saturday. 76 in tahoe. starting out near freezing. 82 in monterey with more heat in southern california. so temperatures today at hardly strictly bluegrass will be in the 70s with plenty of sun, light sea breeze, upper 70s by the afternoon. so looks like a fun day today with warm conditions. 90 in san jose, palo alto 92 and vallejo. the accuweather seven-day forecast you see the steady decline each and every day but it will take time. 4 degrees today, mainly coast and around the bay. then a little bit more cooling tomorrow and by the middle of the week it should feel pretty good and the game tomorrow
