well, good monday morning. we begin with the latest on the ebola patient fighting for his life in a dallas hospital. >> thomas eric duncan is so sick doctors are not giving him the experimental vaccine. we begin with tahman bradley. >> reporter: this morning, thomas eric duncan, the first person diagnosed with ebola in the u.s. remains in critical condition. his family says he's unconscious, on a ventilator, and on dialysis. duncan's girlfriend is frustrated with the care he's receiving. >> i don't think americans, they are doing enough to save him. >> reporter: his girlfriend and family are having their temperatures taken at least twice a day. while specially train eed hazma crews are decontaminated their

apartment. >> being here scares me. >> reporter: the cdc is monitoring nine high-risk patients. 40 others are being watched. a free-lance cameraman for nbc news is expected to arrive in nebraska for treatment. though ebola can on the spread through contact of bodily flo d fluids, u.s. officials are leaving nothing to chance. >> our top priority is the safety of americans. i remain quite confident we'll not have a widespread outbreak. >> reporter: overnight, the cdc confirm d dr. rick sacra does not have a recurrence of ebola. >> dr. richard besser has been in the ebola hot zone covering the story for us. he just returned to the u.s. this weekend.

he spoke to rebecca jarvis about whether the precautions being taken are enough. >> i had my temperature taken three times before i got on the plane in liberia. someone looked me in the eye to see if i looked sick. i had a detailed questionnaire. that makes me more comfortable that people that are sick are not getting on the plane. if i were if i didn't tell honestly like mr. duncan about exposures to ebola, that would be another slip in the system. that's why we have to knock it out in west africa so we're safer here. >> we'll have much more from dr. besser later on "good morning america." a second new jersey preschooler is being monitored for enterovirus. after a boy in a different class died of the respiratory illness. eli waller's death is the first linked to enterovirus 68. he went to bed with no apparent symptoms other than pink eye and never woke up.

his school district is now tracking all children who are sick. there have been confirmed and suspected cases in 46 states. in pennsylvania, search teams looking for accused cop killer eric frein are focusing on a small area after a possible sighting. police say they may have spotted him last night. this comes two days after searchers found a stash of food, clothing, ammunition at a camp site believed to be left by frein. he's been on the run for nearly a month now. suspected of killing one state trooper and wounding another. for the first time, the u.s. has deployed apache helicopters in its air strikes against isis. the stepped up attacks are creating new concerns for the parents of an american hostage abdul kassig, a convert to islam. a masked man has threatened to

execute him. his parents have issued their own video pleading for his release. >> we have asked our government to change its action. like our son, we have no more control over the u.s. government than you have over the breaking of dawn. >> we implore those who are holding you to show mercy and use their power to let you go. >> the kassigs also released a letter from their son in which he said he's scared to die, but he's comforted knowing that he tried to alleviate suffering. a powerful typhoon has claimed the life of at least one u.s. airman in japan. they were taking photos as they were swept away when the storm bore down on the coast of okinawa. the rough surf canceled hundreds of flights. and forced nearly a half million people into shelters. after a four-month time period, the hunt for flight 370 is being resumed. searchers are trying to solve the mysterious disappearance of the plane. crews will use sonar, video cameras, and jet fuel sensors to

scour the water for any trace of the boeing 777. in hong kong this morning, civil servants are back at work and students are back at school. after a widespread demonstration clogged up the city center this weeke weekend. protesters have begun leaving the streets. saying they have taken steps to talk with the government on meeting their demands. others are refusing to budge saying they'll keep up the pressure. it's the first monday in october. that means the supreme court begins its new term. among the case the justices have agreed to decide, whether a muslim prisoner in arkansas can grow a beard. and whether violent rants on social media is a threat. among the cases the court may decide to hear, whether gay marriage is protected by the constitution. and whether states have the right to restrikt abortions. two commercial passenger jets bumped into each other while taxiing at jfk airport last night. the delta jet just came in from north carolina. the royal jordanian plane

brought 159 passengers from iman. >> i think we just got hit. by the royal jordanian aircraft. >> do you need any assistance? >> no, we obviously felt the wing scrape, so, it just rattled the plane a little bit. >> can you inspect the aircraft, please? >> one of the delta passengers described it as a fender bender. a photo of the vehicle on twitter -- the vehicle, a fender bender. these are lanes here. showed a dent in the wing of the delta jet. both planes went to the gate under their own power. >> lucky. after growing into a category 4 hurricane in the pacific, simon weakened. to a tropical storm. >> forecasters say it will continue to lose strength. as it inches closer to the baja peninsula. it could bring dangerous surf to the west coast and trigger downpours in the southwest. time for the weather for much of the nation. another hot day in the west. scattered thunderstorms along the gulf coast.

they're higher after the good jobs news from washington and a rally on wall street. the u.s. added 248,000 jobs last month, better than expected. that could mean more people with paychecks spending more money. the dow added more than 200 points and opens this morning above 17,000. a mainstay of silicon valley may split into two companies. reports say hewlett-packard may separate the business services division from the personal computer division. hp is one of the largest technology companies in the world with $112 billion in revenue last year, it calls itself the original silicon valley startup. with only four carriers handling 80% of domestic flights now, you would think air fares would be going up. they've not. the airlines have announced four fare hikes this year, and three were fairly limited.

the fees are increasing though. worries about sears and kmart as we head into the holiday shopping season. vendors are uneasy about the financial strength of the company. which has lost about $6 billion in the past two years. it's becoming harder for suppliers to get insurance covering possible nonpayment by sears. there are about 2300 sears and kmart stores. and moviegoers showed up for "gone girl" this weekend. the missing person thriller stars ben affleck. it's based on a best-selling novel. it topped the box office estimates with $38 million. >> right behind, "annabelle" a low budget horror flick with $37 million, just a tick behind "gone girl," so that could change once the final numbers are in. the miramar air show featured planes twisting and turning in the sky and the blue angels flying in formation. and spectators found shade anywhere they could, including under the wings of parked planes. now for a look at morning road conditions, a slick ride from the gulf coast all the way into the tennessee and ohio valleys and great lakes. wet at times across south florida. slick roads later on from minnesota into the dakotas. and it should be great day for flying weather. that's weather-related for airport delays are only expected in memphis. pretty good. back to some news now. a proposal that a newly engaged couple won't ever forget. >> they were taking a romantic ride when their hot air balloon drifted off course and hovered above the waves near san diego. people on the beach watched. >> we all just thought that, you know, they were having fun, just getting the passengers closer to the water. >> at first, it looked like it was going to go back up. but then it just got closer and closer to the ground. >> she kind of just jumped out. >> they threw a line over the side of the balloon and surfers

helped pull it back to shore. at the international balloon fiesta in albuquerque, they were grounded by gusting wind for part of the weekend. ironically, this year's theme was spirit of the winds. pilots were allowed to inflate their balloons as long as they stayed on the ground. the festival runs through next weekend. searchers have covered extensive ground in the hunt for missing university of virginia student hannah graham. they scoured 70% of an area near the mall where she was last seen. they were aided over the weekend by a special plane outfitted with high-definition imagery equipment. the search continues this morning, as the suspect in her disappearance remains in jail. a wild scene from california over the weekend. surveillance camera video shows the force with which a jeep drove straight through a doughnut shop. we see this from multiple angles. one person inside the shop was killed. four others were injured.

a man inches away from being hit knows just how lucky he was. >> i suppose it could be heard from a long way away. when it comes crashing through the glass, the metal, there's no chairs left. it just smashed all the -- except in the corner. it just smashed all the chairs. >> he also said time just seemed to slow down immediately as the incident was taking place. it's unclear why the 42-year-old woman behind the wheel lost control of her jeep. she was treated at a hospital and not charged. in missouri, protesters demonstrating the police shooting death of 18-year-old michael brown in august interrupted a performance of the st. louis symphony. ♪ justice for michael, justice for us all ♪ >> some members of the symphony and the audience applauded the interruption. since brown's death in august, activists have been calling for the arrest of the white police officer who gunned down an

unarmed teen. now to a confrontation between a panhandler and a man who gives her money. he says he gives her money every time he sees her. he was outraged to see her driving a better car than his. >> you ask me for money in the middle of the street and you drive a 2013 car? listen, i work hard for my money. i don't appreciate this [ muted ]. and that's why people like you get taken advantage of people like me. >> the woman claims the car belongs to her son. the man wasn't buying it. he threatened to smash the windows if he ever saw the car again. the video was posted on facebook and was viewed more than 2 million times. michael phelps is putting his swimming comeback on hold. the olympic champion swimmer says he's entering rehab after his drunk driving arrest this week. he acknowledges this is not his quote first lapse in judgment. he says he needs to focus on becoming a better person. neither phelps or his agent say this is for alcohol abuse.

but a long-time friend says it probably is. we continue with sports now. we turn to baseball. game three in both of the national league division series take place today. the giants can wrap up against the nationals. >> the dodgers and cardinals are knotted at 1-1. as for yesterday's action, we start with some football. here's our guys at espn. welcome inside "sportscenter." i'm john buccigross. the new england patriots pounded the cincinnati bengals at home on sunday night. tom brady got a lot of questions during the week. is he finished? is he washed up? are the patriots done? they came out emphatically. look at this. you take it, you take it. and then, turnover. scoop and score. kyle arrington. patriots go on to win easily, 43-17 over the bengals. to baseball. playoff baseball. the royals are heading to the alcs. they beat the angels sunday night. they complete the three-game sweep.

[ screaming ] >> those spectators you see there that are right by the road just moments before the crash. right after the crash, they're actually fine. one of them was taken to the hospital in shock. the driver and a passenger sustained only minor injuries. thank god for that. i don't know how they managed to get away with their lives. >> the lady at the end there might be the one taken for shock. she seemed frozen there. she just stayed there. you'll see it in real time one more time. she just sit there is and it just barely misses her. this could have certainly turned out a whel lot worse. thank goodness no angries. remarkable video. we have seen singers mess up the star spangled banner but this one in canada takes the prize.

guards who were trying toñr sto them. alyssa harrington is live there with more on the story. >> reporter: walmart is closed but police are on scene. they are speaking with people here outside of the walmart as they continue the investigation. we know at least one person was hurt when around midnight, as the store was closing, witnesses say two men attempted to shoplift. they were at the counter when a loss prevention officer tried to stop them. one of the suspects started shooting in the store, a witness said. >> i was ]z the back, just shopping, being helped by a worker. we heard the gunshots and heard people screaming. started heading for the back and ended up in the back room. >> reporter: witnesses say the suspects and the security guard started wrestling. at least one person was hurt. it is unclear who that person was, if it was a suspect or
