good morning, america. breaking news. for our viewers in the west. the american journalist infected with ebola on an urgent flight home to nebraska. a specially equipped plane rushing him to treatment at a nebraska hospital. the new plan by the cdc to keep airline passengers from getting into this country. new overnight. a massive storm slamming japan. 2 million people evacuated. american airmen at a military base missing. heavy wind and rain triggering mudslides. while another major storm takes aim at the american southwest. cheating death. harrowing split seconds. spec staters suddenly scrambled, running from a car out of control. how the driver and passenger walked away almost unscathed. if we run into trouble, there is no guarantee we're going to be able to get to you in time or even find you. >> and no guts, no glory. the man who tried to go 1,000

miles from miami to bermuda inside a bubble. he ignored the warnings of the coast guard. instead, asking for directions and had to be rescued. this morning he reveals why he did it. good morning, america. hope you had a good weekend. can you imagine that phone call? hey, guys, i'm in this bubble and i'm lost. >> are you kidding me? >> your tax dollars at work. >> a lot coming up this morning, including tim tebow is here for "motivate me monday." >> looking for to that. but we have a lot of news to get to this morning. beginning with ebola in america. that journalist back on u.s. soil this morning for emergency treatment as that man in dallas is in critical condition. cecilia vega is in dallas with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you. thomas eric duncan has been in isolation for more than a week now. his condition is worsening.
7:02 am
this, as that american journ journalist infected in liberia has now touched down in the u.s. for that medical treatment he so desperately needs. just moments ago, free-lance american cameraman shoka mukpo, landed in nebraska. the 33 weird patient was carefully loaded on the ambulance and given a police escort to the hospital. meanwhile fears over this deadly disease, p mounting. >> we were getting about 50 calls per day before the initial patient was diagnosed here. it's up to about 800. >> reporter: as the first patient ever diagnosed in the u.s., thomas eric duncan, fights for his life. his conditioning worsening to critical. doctors say he's now on a ventilator and dialysis after kidney failure. >> this is very serious. we're taking it as such. >> reporter: doctors focusing on duncan's girlfriend and eight other high-risk patients who had direct contact with him. about 40 others are being
7:03 am
monitored for symptoms as well, including a homeless man who rode in an ambulance after duncan. police finally tracking him down sunday afternoon. this, after a weekend scare at newark's international airport on a united flight from brussels. teams in hazmat suits meeting a sick passenger from liberia on the runway. the man later found not to have the virus. a new reality for travelers in the fight to stop the spread of ebola. abc news learning overnight, the cdc is considering expanding airport screenings of passengers traveling from the hardest hit countries to possibly include taking their temperatures at quarantine stations to find infected flyers. that lack of an ebola vaccine has duncan's girlfriend concerned and angry, too. she told abc news by phone from quarantine that she feels duncan is not getting the same treatment that other infected americans have received.
7:04 am
george? >> a lot of anger there. dr. rich besser is here. doctor, let's start out with more on what the cdc is considering now, some kind of expanded screening? >> they're thinking about sending public health advisers to the airports that have quarantine stations. and doing additional screening of people who come in, people who come from that region. the challenge is there are no direct flights from that region to the united states. i flew from liberia, to brussels, to zurich, to the u.s. so it basically says i came from zurich. identifying them is hard and it wouldn't have picked up mr. duncan, because he didn't get sick until four days after he got here. >> you just got back from a week in liberia as you were saying. talk about the precautions you took while you were there. >> there were incredible precautions. the first time i shook a hand in ten days was when i arrived back in newark. you don't touch anyone while you're there. i wore a special suit in the ward doing the stories on people there. and even on the street, you avoid touching people.
7:05 am
and after every shot, it's washing with bleach. hands, feet, boots. to make sure that you don't pick up anything. >> and you're completely asymptomatic. completely safe for you to be here. >> that's right. i'm checking my temperature twice a day. i'm following all of the cdc guidelines. i'm in the lowest risk group. if i developed a fever, i would go get checked then. but even then, until you are sharing body fluids, you're not going to spread it to anyone. there's a comfort factor there, as well. >> please stand by. we want you the weigh in on the next story as well. to the other big health concern. the enterovirus outbreak. it is now in at least 43 states. for the first time, the disease is blamed directly for causing the death of a child in new jersey. another preschooler from the 4-year-old's class is being tested. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: overnight, concerned parents desperate for answers from school and local officials. >> we need to know what we can do. >> reporter: this, as enterovirus d-68 is now being
7:06 am
blamed for the death of a new jersey preschool student, the first official fatality confirmed to be caused by the virus alone. >> i think it's just got everyone concerned, and i think we just need more information. >> reporter: officials say 4-year-old eli waller went to sleep the night of september 24th and never woke up. >> i think eli's case is the exception to the other cases around the country. he had no signs of illness that night. and his passing was sudden and shocking. >> reporter: eli, the youngest and only boy in a set of triplets. officials say his sisters appear to be okay. >> they're perfectly fine. they're perfectly healthy. >> reporter: and now more reason for concern. another preschooler at eli's school being tested for possible infection this morning. district officials say they're thoroughly cleaning all schools. they're advising people to remain home from school or work if they're sick. for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> thanks to lindsey for that.
7:07 am
doctor besser, back. so horrifying. no symptoms at all, and the little boy died. >> yeah. it's so scary when you hear a story like that and so sad for a child this age to be lost. the thing about the enterovirus infection, for most children, this is peers to be simply a cold. it appears like a common cold. there's probably hundreds of thousands of children who have had this. the kids at most risk are those with asthma respiratory problems because it can cause wheezing and breathing difficulty. if a child falls in that group, you want to make sure they get seen quickly. apart from hand washing, it's hard to prevent this. for most children, it's a mild disease. >> for most. only if your child has these underlying conditions should you be extra concerned. >> that's right. parents have to give themselves a break, as well. it's very hard to stop the transmission of cold viruses. each year, from enteroviruses, there are quite a few deaths. this one, there's been one death over the past two months. it's very sad, but it's not unexpected during this season.
7:08 am
