called the confidence a challenge. we'll have a live update on the meeting on abc 7 news at 6:00. 1,000 houses are threatened and many others out of their homes because of wildfires burning in placer county. five separate fires broke out yesterday just east of auburn, destroying five homes. another 200 are now threatened, and residents in the community of applegate are under mandatory evacuation orders. the fire has burned 420 acres and is only 20% contained. it's not sure what caused the fires but the officials are not ruling out arson. coming up on "world news" with david muir, the clues linking these fires together. investigators have determined the dog rock fire burning right now in yosemite started accidently back on tuesday by a spark from a vehicle. it burned 245 acres in the for tuna area in yosemite and is 20% contained. craig hunt died fighting this fire, when his cal fire plane crashed into the side of a cliff on tuesday.

if you commute between marin county and san francisco by bus, you need to find another way to get to and from work next friday. bus mechanics and service workers will hold a one-day strike a week from tomorrow on october 17th. this comes two weeks after a similar strike on ferryboat captains. the ferries will be operating during the bus strike next week. hundreds have been working without a contract since july the 1st. they're fighting over pay raises and health insurance costs. police have arrested three men for the fatal shooting of a young father in san jose. 24-year-old richard watkins was killed outside his home while helping a relative park his car. investigators believe the father of two was an innocent bystander. a man who spent his spare time with his family, in the san jose saints pop warner teams. police have arrested luis gonzal gonzalez, alexander, and castro, all three in jail, and charged

with homicide tonight. former livermore golf instructor andrew nisbet has been sentenced to 27 years in state prison for child sex abuse. the 32-year-old sexually abused three boys he was teaching. and then tried to solicit someone to murder them. nisbet was arrested last december. in september, he pleaded guilty to seven felony counts in a plea bargain. he taught at the golf course in livermore. police are investigating after a noose was found hanging from a tree at berkeley high school. the vice principal said a security guard found the noose and took it down on october 1st. it's a symbol of african-american lynchings prior to the civil rights movement. the school is planning an assembly to talk about cultural sensitivity. this is video from stings

carried out by the police this week. nick smith has more. >> reporter: a homeowner has no recourse with an unlicensed guy. you're just stuck. hidden cameras expose what investigators with the contractor state license board say they were able to see in plain sight during a south napa sting operation. fake contractors targeting unsuspecting homeowners with bids for quake repairs. some quotes running into the thousands for work on masonry or drywall, well above the state limit of $500, done by an unlicensed contractor. >> in an earthquake, disaster situation, there are some really unscrupulous unlicensed guys who will come here, you write a check, and there's no guarantees they're coming back. >> reporter: jeff miller is one of the agents working on this undercover sting operation. he said within hours of the south napa quake, they started warning unlicensed contractors they could face felony charges if they illegally tried to take

advantage of earthquake victims. but that didn't stop these predators. one after the other, unlicensed contractors came looking for prey. >> everybody we called, we called from an illegal advertisement. >> reporter: this week in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, including the napa county d.a.'s office, they targeted fake contractors looking to profit off of earthquake related repairs. >> so we caught a total of eight people contracting. those people are going to be facing felony charges. >> reporter: across town, licensed contractor phil joy has been working to repair this napa home since the quake. the process is a long one, so much so, the red tag has faded to pink. officials with the cflb say the example of doing things the right way including registering with the state, insuring workers against injury and displaying license numbers. those busted in the sting, they're expected to show up in superior court where they can

tell their story to a judge. nick smith, abc 7 news. the devastating loma prieta earthquake happened 25 years ago next friday. hard to believe that much time has gone by. we'll take a look this saturday evening back. the premiere of the abc 7 special 15 seconds, 25 years later. the loma prieta earthquake. we hope you can join us for that. three teenagers are recovering from major injuries after a fiery high-speed crash. right outside napa. it happened at 10:00 last night on converse valley road. the highway patrol said an unlicensed 17-year-old was driving 70 miles an hour, when the car went off the road, crashed into a tree, and then caught fire. people nearby pulled out a 14-year-old boy, and a 15-year-old girl from the car. firefighters had to extricate the driver. he was air lifted to santa rosa memorial hospital. again, they have major injuries. traffic was a mess on highway 85 at sunny vail today. all lanes of the freeway were

completely blocked around noon, after a motorcyclist slammed into the back of a minivan. the motorcyclist was taken to the hospital. the chp is investigating exactly why this happened. a fremont woman who police say supplied the alcohol in a driving under the influence crash last year was in court today. 40-year-old yusef was arrested yesterday. police say she supplied alcohol at a party at her house last october. one teenager leaving the party was killed when his best friend crashed his car near durham road. police say 70-year-old jason park was too drunk to drive, so his best friend took the wheel even though he was drunk, too. the friend was convicted of vehicular manslaughter. senator barbara boxer blasted the nfl over domestic violence. tonight, what she is finally hearing from the head of the league. plus -- >> think about the women in your life. the women that you love and care for, the women that have nurtured you. a new face for football policy. the man behind the powerful video on domestic violence.

an air show over san francisco today, the blue angels practiced the flights over the city just moments ago. the rehearsal is tomorrow for this weekend's air shows. from the sky to the water, the nation's newest amphibious assault ship. the "uss america" will be commissioned in san francisco. today hundreds of people lined up to get onboard the ship. but abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez was there first. >> reporter: cheryl, let me just

tell you it has been a great day. we got onboard an amazing ship and just saw the blue angels. but it's really a huge honor for san francisco to have a ship commissioned here. and it's rare that it happens during fleet week. the flight deck of the "uss america" was buzzing with military personnel and civilians who came to see the "uss america," the first ship of its class. the new ship is designed to maximize the navy's capability to fly just about anywhere. it will hold more than 30 aircraft, including the mv-22 osprey helicopter, and the f-35 b fighter. both capable of vertical lift and landings. >> it's a lot of fun. it's really fast. you're pulling a lot of gs. it's a pretty wild ride. >> reporter: it's also big enough to store equipment and transportable vehicles. unlike other wasp class amphibious assault ships, it doesn't have a well deck used to transport equipment and marines

not sanctioned by the league. kaepernick thumbed his nose at authorities, following sunday's victory, by wearing dre headphones around his neck. kaepernick has also done a commercial which he's shown rocking out to sounds of what seems to be screaming seahawks fans. the problem, the nfl signed an exclusive agreement with bose. when asked today whether beats would pick up the cost of the fine, kaepernick said, we'll let that be unanswered. senator barbara boxer has responded to a letter written last month, calling for a zero tolerance policy for domestic violence. roger goodell outlined five things the league is doing to address the issue, writing these steps are based on the clear civil principle, domestic violence, unacceptable under any circumstances. boxer issued a statement saying in part, i'm particularly pleased they will focus on

prevention, early intervention and mandatory training for players. that training began with team owners who were shown a powerful video to kick off the league's domestic violence and sexual assault education session this week. in the video, former baltimore colts lineman asked the men to think about the women they love, wives, mothers, grandmothers and daughters. >> now, just imagine that they're at a party. and there's some man there that starts to assault them. whether that is physically, sexually, verbally. they start to assault a woman that you love. now, think how that makes you feel. think about your feelings toward that perpetrator of that violence. then i would ask you, if you think about that, think about the role that you have to raise up a generation of men that are going to have the clarity, or have the moral courage to call out other men. >> powerful stuff. the anti-violence education sessions will be presented to all 32 nfl teams, as well as

owners, coaches and league employees by the end of this season. along those lines, a group fighting domestic violence in the east bay is asking all men and boys to join the conversation about what it means to be a man. i had the great privilege of being at the fund-raiser in concord today. the key note speaker was a mother of three, ceo, filmmaker and wife of lieutenant governor gavin newsom. >> we have a national conversation that redefines masculinity. our men are learning and socialized into this culture of violence. until we have enough men and women speaking out and connecting the dots between this learned behavior, and the balance you're seeing in the large society. we're not going to create the culture that we all want to raise our children in. >> also, a donation of $5,000 to check from a woman who survived domestic violence.

on wall street, the worst day of the year with the dow plunging 335 points. it closed at 16,659. the nasdaq dropped 90 points. both losses are about 2% of their value. a large part of the selling was in energy stocks. microsoft ceo is in hot water for telling women working to trust karma rather than asking for pay raises. she made the remarks before a primarily female audience at the annual grace hopper celebration of women in computing. >> it's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along.
