making news in america this morning. on edge, a joke about ebola leads to a full-blown hazmat response as major airports begin extra screening. and why during this health crisis does the u.s. not have a surgeon general. a second night of protests overnight. a community outraged by another shooting by police of a black teenager. no-show at a celebration overnight in north korea. but where was the nation's young lead center he hasn't been seen in weeks. concern growing this morning, is he sick? and the unwelcome visitor making himself comfortable at a police station. well, good morning. we begin this friday with the global fears about ebola.

the head of the cdc warning the virus could rival aids in the health crisis. >> someone is making a joke about ebola on board an airliner that triggered a massive response. we begin with abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: it was a joke, but nobody on board this plane was laughing. a hazmat team boarded this u.s. airways flight after a passenger sneezed and says he had ebola. another passenger heard and told a flight attendant, and alerted the captain. although the man was kidding, they followed strict cdc guidelines. >> you never to want see four guys in hazmat suits. >> reporter: there are new cases around the world. in spain, eight doctors and nurses are in isolation. this was afternoon treating an ebola patient. so far only one of the workers has tested positive. six u.s. military planes arrived in west africa on thursday to help with the outbreak. while back home, soldiers at

fort bragg are getting training ahead of their deployment. >> when i was in afghanistan, it was different. i was concerned about my health, but not really like this one. i'm concerned about my health. what kind of diseases can i get? >> reporter: u.s. hospitals and airports remain on high alert. starting saturday, john f. kennedy airport will have new screening measures for all passengers arriving from african nations raving anned by ebola. and next week at four other international hubs. and in dallas, good news for the sheriff's deputy rushed to the hospital by paramedics in hazmat gear, tests for ebola have come back clear. >> the public is safe. we all need to stay calm and carry on with our daily lives. >> reporter: a startling message from the head of the cdc. urging action to stop the spread of ebola before it becomes as big as the aids crisis. >> and the cdc is out front

handling the u.s. response. but the u.s. doesn't have a surgeon general, why not? >> we don't have someone because president obama's nominee was blocked by republicans in congress. they thought he was too outspoken. he supports an assault weapons ban. and the nra went after him for that. he's also a supporter of obamacare. you could say the top doctor was a casualty of politics. now i should mention we actually have an acting surgeon general, but he's kept a low profile during this ebola crisis. >> thanks so much. breaking overnight, a second night of protests in st. louis following the shooting death of a teenager by an off-duty police officer. in addition to chanting "hands up, don't shoot," some people started burning american flags. they are demanding justice. the justice department looking into the shooting is what they want. happened just miles from where michael brown was killed by a police officer. and the big announcement of

the nobel peace prize. it was awarded to malala yousafzai. she was shot in the head for wanting gills to go to school. she will share the award with an indian activist who's brought attention to the exploitation of children. we will have more on "good morning america" tomorrow. and the border town of kobani, chuck hagel says he's appealing to turkey for military help against the terrorist group. the u.s. wants to use a turkish base to launch attacks at isis in syria. world leaders keeping a close watch on north korea where its reclusive lead has remained out of the public eye for five weeks now. the mysterious absence of kim jong-un is fueling speculation, from his health to a possible coup. he was a no-show today as they celebrated their 69th anniversary. a government source reportedly

a 401k worth $90,000 at the beginning of the month lost $2,000. but there's a silver lining, welcome news for drivers. global oil prices tumbled below the $90 mark for the first time in two years. investors see supplies surpassing demand. the microsoft ceo is under fire and saying women shouldn't ask for a raise and trust the system to play them well. he has apologized, but it underscores challenges for women in the tech world. >> reporter: it plagues the tech industry. a comment by the microsoft ceo wasn't the answer women were looking for. >> it's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises. >> reporter: that was his answer to a question about whether women should ask their bosses for a raise.
