well, good tuesday morning to you all. thank you for being here, i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. we begin with violent storms spawning tornados. damaging hail and flooding rains. >> take a look at the radar we have here. the massive 800-mile long weather system, threatening the gulf coast and the midwest. this dramatic photo was captured in heartsell, alabama. that bolt of lightning seemingly to split open the heavens. it set the stage for a day of devastation. seven tornados raked across half a dozen states killing two people in arkansas and alabama. in burnwell, alabama, a 75-year-old woman was crushed by a tree that fell on top of her mobile home. >> i tried everything i could to get her out. but there was a tree on top of her. >> and near the city of ashtown, arkansas, a father was killed and his wife and children rushed

to the hospital after their home was levelled. residents there with picking through the debris of what was once their homes. the national weather service was on sight assessing the strength. >> i think it was an ef-2. the main determination was the mobile home right behind me that was pretty much demolished. >> and louisiana, now under a state of emergency, trees are uprooted, cars are crushed and power lines are dangling. and an intrepid photographer snapped this image in tennessee. north to belleville, illinois. crews out cleaning up after drenching rain and wind-downed trees wrecked the roof of a home in this development. >> very traumatic to walk up and see the back of your house pretty much demolish and the watching the rain continue to power down. it's just a sadness. >> all this weather heading east. millions of americans and several major cities from the gulf coast to the great lakes are right in its path. and, again, that system this morning, covering nearly a third of the country and on the move.

>> accuweather's jim dickey joins us now with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. the threat for severe weather continues today. shifting further eastward, down from the ohio valley on towards the florida panhandle. stretching to the coast. large hail, torrential rain and flash flooding. those are the main concerns here. here is hurricane gonzalo, headed towards puerto rico. and going bring tremendous rainfall. 4 to 8 inches. continuing to strengthen, not going to be an impact to the united states. t.j. and reena, back to you. breaking overnight. a powerful earthquake has shaken central america. the 7.4 underwater quake hit off of the pacific coast of el salvador. one man died when an electricity pole fell on him. in the city of san miguel in the eastern part of el salvador, there was more damage. tremors could be felt along the coast. and from guantanamo to costa rica.

new images of a young texas nurse infected with ebola. nina pham is in good spirits. that's according to her family priest. she's even talking with her mother via skype. but it's a mystery how she got the disease after caring for thomas eric duncan who died. with the latest developments, abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: this morning nina pham is in isolation and in stable condition at a dallas hospital after receiving a blood transfusion from ebola survivor dr. kent brantley. >> she's doing well and feeling well. >> reporter: the 26-year-old nurse, the first person in the u.s. to contract ebola was among 70 health care workers who treated thomas eric duncan who died last week. they don't know how she became infected and worry about more cases. >> if this one individual was infected and we don't know now, within the isolation unit, then it is possible that other individuals could have been infected as well. >> reporter: as a precaution, one of her close friends and her

dog bentley have also been placed in quarantine. and on the job, she wore protective gear, a gown, a face mask and shield, two layers of gloves and shoe covers. but all of this is less protection than the doctors and specialized biocontainment hospitals, chemical-resistant jump suits, taping gloves to sleeves and suits to boots. some authorities wonder if they should require them to be sent to the specialized containment hospitals. >> look at this map. montana, nebraska, georgia, maryland. they have been practicing for just this kind of event for years. >> reporter: regular hospitals are practicing too. reviewing procedures to deal with ebola patients and to protect health care professionals. an experimental vaccine is being tested in maryland. officials in canada say it's proven 100% effective on animals. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. today president obama attends a summit outside washington with defense ministers of 20 countries. the goal?

find new ways to combat isis as fighters close in on baghdad despite intense u.s.-led air strikes. martha raddatz has the latest. >> reporter: it's alarming how close these isis fighters are to baghdad. infiltrating the towns and cities and have sunni supporters who are dissatisfied with the iraqi government. and this is in spite of hundreds of u.s. air strikes. more than a thousand bombs dropped. the u.s. called in apache attack helicopters to protect the airport. the chairman of the joint chiefs telling me that iraqi security forces were being overrun by isis just about 12 miles from the airport. and if the apaches hadn't been called in, it was a straight shot to the arraignment. but the chairman is confident isis will not take baghdad itself. but it's clear that isis has a presence there with the number of suicide bombings increasing. martha raddatz, abc news, washington.

a new plea from the family of a british journalist being held hostage by isis. john cantlie's sister is urging the militant group to re-establish direct contact when her family. he was captured two years ago and has appeared in several propaganda videos. his sister said the channel of communication they had has been lost. >> it's not true that there has been no attempt to engage with i.s. it is simply not accurate. this is frustrating for all parties, including those trying to assist us. >> the family says efforts to reopen dialogue have been ignored. two american journalists and two british aid workers have already been beheaded in the past couple of months. after much speculation, north korean leader kim jong-un has resurfaced. making a public appearance for the first time in five weeks. he was seen visiting a housing district in pyongyang.

. the number of deaths and injuries associated with the faulty gm ignition switches has risen again. attorney kenneth fineberg who was hired by gm to compensate victims say 25 people died and 25 seriously hurt. they neuknew about them, but di not issue a recall until this year. and stock markets in asia. a rise would follow a steep selloff. all three were down 1.5% yesterday. they dumped stocks because of lingering concerns about a global slowdown. asian markets grew.

and the seven high school football players facing charges for allegedly abusing younger teammates could be in court today. those seven have been suspended from sayreville high school. what's not known is if the coaches knew about it or suspected it. a dramatic rescue captured on camera off the coast of oregon. the coast guard plucked five hikers to safety after they were struck. three others who tried to make it to the shore were saved by bistand whoergs made a human chain to get them out. a battery bizarre incident. caught emerging from under a subway access hatch in the sidewalk and tossing a smoke bomb into an outdoor seating area. that's used for emergencies.
