we're pretty happy how this turned out. >> the search for a missing south bay woman was at a dead end today. that is until one officer thought to tap into her ipad and pinpoint the location of her phone. good afternoon. i'm dan ashley. larry beil is off. >> i'm ama daetz. officers used an iphone tracking app to find the 28-year-old campbell woman. >> she was at the bottom of a 500 foot ravine off mount hamilton road. despite the high tech help from apple, officers had a tough time tracking her down. >> abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at the hospital with her dramatic rescue. >> reporter: well, this is the regional medical center in san jose and this is where melissa vasquez is being treated. the 28-year-old was airlifted

here by coast guard helicopter this morning, missing since yesterday afternoon. her car went down a steep ravine on mount hamilton. she was ejected from her chevy cruise and yesterday afternoon the onstar program on her car detected a crash. monitors called campbell police, told them her car was in a location which turned out to be false, then another location, also false. it wasn't until early this morning when her parents called police, reported their daughter missing. an officer went to the home, found vasquez was carrying an iphone. that's what her parents told him. he went on to apple's find my iphone app but the iphone was locked. he then amazingly figured out her password. listen to this. >> he used some of the numbers that were available to him at the time and from my understanding, it sounds like he added a digit on to her physical address and luckily it popped up. >> reporter: bingo. the app was right.

the app had the right location. the rescue was made. vasquez was flown here where her condition appears to be improving. the chp tells me she is conscious and talking. meantime, onstar says it is investigating why the program failed. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you. it was a gray and drizzly day for parts of the bay area. >> it sure was. sky 7 hd ran into rain while flying over the peninsula earlier today. you can see the drops hitting the camera. but the real rain is still on the way. >> spencer christian is here with an accuweather update. >> the real rain is still on the way but it's looking rather threatening in the skies right now. here's a look at wind conditions, by the way. it's breezy over much of the bay area with gusts anywhere from about 15 to 35 miles per hour, the top gust at sfo right now. 24 miles per hour gusts at fairfield. over where we are on the embarcadero, winds in the last

half hour have diminished a bit. a look at live doppler 7 hd, you can see extensive cloud cover, not much falling from the clouds so far. over in berkeley, one hundredth of an inch of rain. the higher elevations, of course, little bit wetter, eight hundredths of an inch. up north is where the real rain is right now. that area of rainfall is moving in our direction. here's the forecast animation. starting 7:00 this evening, at which point we will see a few areas of widely scattered light showers but later in the evening, after about 11:00 p.m. or so, we will see steadier, more widespread rain moving into the north bay, perhaps even into the santa cruz mountains at that time, and overnight, we will get some more shower activity, producing wet spots for the early morning commute. bear in mind if you are a morning commuter, you may encounter some delays but by 9:00 tomorrow morning, we will see the showers tapering off, giving way to at least a partly sunny day. i'll have more on the rain that

for free. >> reporter: that's right. they showed up in rare form today in right field. three innings at a time. they peeked through the fence. who are the more dedicated fans, those inside or outside? >> equal dedication but we out here like to get -- feel we are more spiritd into the game. >> reporter: that's a fan speaking for a city. wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> we are of course monitoring the game. abc 7's mike shumann will bring us the highlights when it's over. american airlines said that jet that had to make an emergency landing in san francisco yesterday is being flown to tulsa, oklahoma for maintenance. >> video from a passenger on the flight from sfo to dallas shows the interior panels in the cabin detaching, exposing insulation. flight 2293 returned to sfo as a precaution. >> the airline blames a malfunctioning air duct and says passengers were never in any danger. the faa agrees. even so, passengers say it was really unnerving. >> we heard this -- these

popping noises and i thought something's moving around in the overhead. next thing i knew, the wall kind of next to me looked like it had separated from the wall. >> aviation experts say the interior walls have nothing to do with the structure of the plane. they are just there so you don't have to look at the bare metal airframe. the supreme court is allowing california to continue enforcing a law that bans the sale of foie gras. they rejected a challenge to the law from producers of the delicacy in new york and canada. the law bars farmers from force feeding birds with a tube. the law also bans the sale of foie gras in california. the i-team produced a series of reports on this issue before the law was passed. san francisco is saying good-bye to the bay guardian after 48 years. tomorrow's edition of the free weekly alternative newspaper will be the last. its publisher says the decision was made for financial reasons.

the san francisco media company says it spent the last two years trying to keep the progressive paper alive but they were just losing too much money. no word on how many jobs will be lost but the guardian's editor says he and his staff are in shock. well, it should be back to normal tomorrow at san francisco's courthouses but it was anything but today as a strike by workers disrupted court proceedings and other routines. >> abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler joins us live outside the superior courthouse. carolyn? >> reporter: san francisco has three courthouses in the superior court center, here at civic center, the hall of justice and the youth guidance center. court management filed a complaint today with the public employment relations board over what it calls an illegal strike. the picket lines went up at 6:30 this morning. more than half of the 438 employees of the superior court system were on strike today. it meant victor sandy could not

file papers to try to stop an upcoming eviction. are you frustrated? >> well, yeah. >> reporter: the workers say the court is violating state law by bargaining in bad faith for a new deal that will begin in 2015. >> they threaten us across the table by saying if we give anything to the workers, then we will lose jobs. >> reporter: at issue is nearly $16 million the union calls a reserve fund. they say it could pay for a wage hike. but the superior court says under state law, the money had to be spent by this past july. >> we spent it to guarantee health care for our retirees. we spent it to balance our budget for this year and a small piece of next year. we spent it to improve services to the public. >> reporter: the court ceo calls the strikers rogue employees and says they shut down nine of the

23 courtrooms at the hall of justice, and 14 of the 26 at the civic center. emergencies like domestic violence cases were priorities. for other filings and papers there were drop boxes. >> i don't know when it will get filed. it will have today's date but i don't know when it will get filed. >> reporter: san francisco court clerks are the highest paid in the state. making about $20,000 more than those in other parts of the bay area. the union says the comparison is unfair. >> san francisco is one of the, if not the most expensive place in the united states to be able to live but also to be able just to come to work. >> reporter: they plan to be back at work tomorrow. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00, the bay area county considering a big transportation ballot measure but it comes with a big price tag. also, the east bay kids reaping the fall harvest at the white house with first lady michelle obama. and new at 4:30, we update the condition of the texas nurse with ebola and what she thinks

rent-a-truck told investigators he fell asleep and crashed just after 3:00 this morning. a few moments later a woman in a honda ran into the truck. she is expected to be okay. the westbound lanes reopened shortly after 7:00 this morning but by then, traffic was backed up all the way to fairfield and it stayed that way for hours. election day is just three weeks away now, and a transportation tax that barely failed two years ago is back on the ballot in alameda county. opponents took credit for defeating it in 2012 and they pledge to do the same next month. abc 7 news reporter nick smith is live from berkeley with the latest on this. sounds like a battle cry. >> reporter: it is indeed. who wouldn't be for a measure that promises more than 150,000 jobs to fix transportation and extend b.a.r.t.? sounds like a no-brainer, right? well, think again. >> we are here to tell everybody to vote no on alameda county measure bb.

>> reporter: the measure would review a sales tax approved in '10. according to the commission, this is how they would break down the almost $8 billion the 30-year plan would generate. $3.7 billion would be used for public transit. $2.34 billion for street repair. $400 million would be earmarked for the b.a.r.t. extension to livermore. sure, all that sounds good, says frank lee, but he points out the devil is in the details. if passed, alameda county taxpayers would pay some of the highest sales tax in the state. >> 9.5%. for residents of haywood and union city, they would pay the highest, 10%. >> if i don't fight, the grandchildren, what do i say to them in three years? >> reporter: judy is a 43-year resident of livermore who believes her taxes have already paid for the long ago promised b.a.r.t. extension. she doesn't want to pay for it again and will fight measure bb tooth and nail.

>> for them to come back with another plan, we are very ske skeptic skeptical. we're not sure what they're thinking. >> i'm always concerned about my children as well as others. >> reporter: sylvia not only supports measure bb but helped to push measure b, which narrowly failed voter approval in 2012. she says yes on bb is about more than roads and highways. it's also about the future and serving communities and people in need. >> it's important that they understand that the future for themselves and their children will depend on the groundwork that we have done now. >> reporter: the battle for votes will go on another three weeks. a two-thirds vote is needed for a win. nick smith, abc 7 news. a group of influential politicians from san jose hope to sway the city's hotly contested mayor's race. this morning, the current mayor and former mayors ron james, susan hammer and tom mchenry reiterated their endorsement for

councilman sam lacardo. former city leaders had already endorsed him during the primary. he's in a dead heat with the county supervisor. a recent poll shows more than a third of voters still have not decided who to vote for. kids from willow grove elementary school in pittsburg joined first lady michelle obama in the white house kitchen garden today. the students were there for the annual fall harvest of squash, lettuce, sweet potatoes and tomatoes. they were invited along with kids from several other states who attend schools that have school garden programs and teach nutrition education. the first lady welcomed them before they got to work in the garden. >> just imagine that everything was just dirt just a few months ago. because the summer was so cool and wet and beautiful, everything is just bursting and it's just amazing over there. >> once the students finish harvesting the vegetables, the learned how to cook them and enjoyed a meal of pumpkin soup and chicken and visited with the first lady.

sounds like a great time. >> that's neat. let's turn our attention to the forecast around here. things have changed considerably. >> spencer christian is here with the accuweather update. >> we are liking the change, most of us. we are hoping for some rainfall, much needed rain, and we are getting a little bit. here's live doppler 7 hd. you can see we've got lots of cloud cover. haven't got much yet in the way of rainfall, a couple hundredths of an inch, but here's the main mass of moisture to the north-northwest around crescent city, moving in our direction. it will likely bring us steadier rainfall late tonight. at the moment, live view from looking north ward toward the golden gate. 66 in san francisco. 68 in oakland and san carlos. san jose, 70 degrees. 69 morgan hill. 60, half moon bay. 65 degrees currently in santa rosa. napa, 66. 64, petaluma. 70 in fairfield. 69 in concord. 72 at livermore. one more live view from the east bay hills camera showing clouds

and various levels of the atmosphere as we look westward. the forecast features are these. rain spreading southward tonight. there will be wet spots for the morning commute although we are not expecting drenching rains. but any rain at all producing wet spots could slow down the morning commute. more rain is possible to likely late in the weekend, into the weekend. satellite image shows the approaching cold front out ahead of it, large mass of clouds which we are seeing right now. the main frontal system will move through later tonight. behind that, we have an active storm track which means more potential rain makers are headed our way over the next several days. our projection for rainfall totals is not terribly impressive. by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, we expect to see no more than a quarter inch, having fallen in the north bay mountains, up to .10 in the lower elevations. parts of the south bay may receive no measurable rainfall at all from this system. what about the sierra? even there, it's not looking like much. south of lake tahoe we expect conditions to be dry.

north of lake tahoe, there will be areas of rain but snow levels will be up above 8,000 feet. we aren't likely to see significant snow. back in the bay area, lots of cloud cover, scattered showers, especially after midnight. overnight lows will be mainly in t the upper 50s to around 60. tomorrow, we expect showers to taper off relatively early in the day, by afternoon at least a partly sunny day with high temperatures ranging from mid 60s at the coast to near 70 around the bay to mid 70s in the mildest inland locations. and for game four of the nlcs tomorrow evening at at & t park, giants versus cardinals, game time 5:00 p.m., it will be 62 degrees, partly cloudy at the start of the game. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow morning, showers, partly cloudy, mainly dry thursday. then a chance of late rain on friday and morning showers on saturday. partly cloudy sunday. a chance of more rain monday. lingering showers on tuesday. so we do have an active, unsettled period of weather

sky z7 hd is live over breaking news in contra costa county, where an accused drunk driver hit a child on a skateboard. police just cleared the scene a few moments ago. we don't know the child's age but police say his injuries are serious. the highway patrol has arrested the driver of the camry for suspicion of dui. we are still getting information on this story and will bring you more information as we get it. you can always get the latest alerts on twitter. a texas girl's involvement in a charity run gets her suspended from school. carol stone says her daughter haley participated in a color run for charity over the weekend. runners wear white and get doused with colored dyes and some pink dye got into her hair. when she went to class yesterday, she was put on in-school suspension for violating her elementary school's code of conduct, which forbids unnatural hair color. >> we didn't plan for her hair to be colored like that and it

it went into extras. the giants saw home field advantage with the win in st. louis, hoping to add to the tally with the first of three games at at & t park today. series tied 1-1, tim hudson on the hill for the giants in his first career nlcs appearance. dealing with a cool, windy day and the wind becomes a factor. bottom first, two on, two strikes, hunter pence. no problem. he dumps it into right field. posey scores. 1-0, giants. the wind came into play two batters later. bases loaded, looked like a grand slam but the wind pushes the ball back into play and they settle for a bases clearing triple. 4-0 lead. the cards battle back. colton wong launches one to right. pence turned around. two-run triple. top seven now, 4-3. hudy makes a mistake. one is kruccrushed off the foul pole. we go to extras. two on for the giants, bottom of the tenth. blanco lays down the sac bunt.

game six and seven if needed -- they won't be needed -- will be back in st. louis this weekend. turning now to world news. alarming new numbers are out today concerning the deadly ebola virus including the death rate. it has now increased to seven out of ten patients. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is in dallas where the latest case was discovered. >> reporter: nurse nina pham saying she's doing well following her blood transfusion from dr. kent brantly. she released a statement praising the treatment she's getting at this dallas hospital from what she called the best team of doctors and nurses in the world. still today, health officials are trying to figure out how, despite wearing full protective gear, the 26-year-old contracted the virus while treating a patient who died of ebola here last week. >> a single infection in a health care worker is unacceptable. what we are doing at this point is looking at everything we can do to minimize that risk.

>> reporter: concerns growing about the potential spread of ebola. the world health organization now saying by december, there could be 10,000 new cases globally every week. here in the u.s., health officials trying to calm fears about the virus being transmitted, saying there is no risk of an outbreak in america, but there could still be more isolated cases and health care workers at this hospital. one nurse who asked not to be identified questioning if enough is being done to keep them safe. >> what are the things that we need to do to be more careful? do we need to invest in a more p protective equipment? >> reporter: the cdc has more than 20 experts here offering training to hospital staff. we learned today more than 70 health care workers who may have had some contact with the ebola patient who died here last week are now being monitored daily as a precaution. marcy gonzalez, abc news, dallas. a new poll shows americans are concerned about ebola and

forces continue to fight the militants. yesterday there were 21 air strikes against isis, the most since the start of the air campaign in syria last month. >> encouraged by the commitment of the countries involved to make sure that we are making steady progress. >> the obama administration says it is premature to judge the success or failure of the last few weeks of air strikes. the pentagon says the total cost for two months of air strikes inside iraq and syria is $424 million. the u.s. and russia may be at odds over ukraine but appear ready to join forces against isis. secretary of state john kerry and russia's foreign minister met in paris today. afterward, kerry said russia has agreed to begin intelligence sharing with the u.s. on the islamic state. he also says the two countries would work closer together on dealing with iran, north korea's nuclear program as well as other issues. former secretary of state hillary clinton spent the morning in san francisco as the

a woman says she and her husband were forced into hiding after she received death threats for developing video games. she is part of a movement trying to change the way women are viewed in the video game industry. many believe female characters are too often represented as sex objects and women only make up 22% of the gaming work force. she says she had to leave her massachusetts home when a twitter account using the handle death to breanna sent out her address with death threats. >> i'm not going to get bullied out of this industry by people this threatened by women who just want to make video games. it is ridiculous. >> twitter has suspended the account and police are trying to identify whoever is behind the messages. a mother is stirring up a firestorm for doing intense

cross-fit workouts until days before her baby was born. these are pictures that got a lot of people talking. she was nine months pregnant and still doing a grueling cross-fit workout including strenuous lifting. she started doing cross-fit two years ago when she became pregnant with her second child and she saw no reason to quit. >> for women who are at this level of physical fitness before pregnancy, you know, they can listen to their bodies and safely continue to work out at that level throughout their entire pregnancy, under the supervision of their health provider. >> my doctor said being pregnant is not being sick. >> she suffered terrible morning sickness during her first pregnancy but says she felt wonderful during this one, and she continued her cross-fit routine until four days before she delivered. she delivered a healthy baby boy two weeks ago. a dream house built on the florida coast quickly became a nightmare when its owners learned it wasn't built on their land. a missouri couple says their contractor built the home on the

friday marks the 25th anniversary of the loma prieta earthquake, the 15 second wake-up call to the bay area. 63 people died and there was more than $7 billion in damage. all this week we look back at that dramatic moment in our history and how it changed our future. abc 7 news anchor cheryl jennings remembers the early hours after the quake. >> for the first time in 27 years, a world series game will be played in candlestick park. >> reporter: it was game three of the world series between the san francisco giants and oakland a's. the pregame show had just begun when suddenly something went wrong.

wrong. >> we're having an earthquake. >> reporter: the bay area shook for 15 seconds but it was hours before we realized the huge extent of the damage. power and phone service was cut for much of the bay area. radio and tv stations were knocked off the air. abc 7 was uniquely positioned to get the story to the bay area and the rest of the world. the abc national network was covering the world series so the blimp was here, broadcasting the first pictures of a huge fire in san francisco's marina district and we had an emergency generator so we were the first station back on the air. broadcasting from a makeshift set in a seriously damaged building. i was at the anchor desk. >> a major earthquake, an earthquake which was felt from oakland, sacramento as far south as los angeles.

that is the nimitz freeway. you can see, oh, my god, look at that. the freeway has just completely collapsed. >> reporter: crews assigned to the world series were instead sending images of disaster. >> i'm at the corner of jefferson. you can see this building is collapsed. they don't know if people are still in there. natural gas lines have ruptured and that has caused that fire. the war lines have ruptured. there is no water coming out of the fire hydrants. >> it's been a frightening scene here. you can see just below me is where this crack in the bay bridge occurred, a 50-foot section. you see down there below the two cars, two cars that were on the upper deck when the bridge collapsed. >> the building began to shake. terrified people. there was yelling and screaming almost instantaneously. the cars in the parking lot were rolling back and forth, literally bouncing on the ground. >> reporter: the downtown section of santa cruz was basically gone.

good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm cheryl jennings. some are calling this a game changer for women in the work force who want to be mothers. egg freezing is expensive. the procedure generally costs a minimum of $10,000 and often reaches twice that. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is in the newsroom with more. >> for those of you who have read the anne murray-slaughter article why women still can't have it all, you realize how difficult it is to be at the top of your game while being a wonderful mom at the same time. here, the two companies are saying you can do both, maybe not at the same time, which opens up a whole new dialogue. the tech industry is still dominated by men. most women would say they welcome any amount of help to climb the corporate ladder. how about up to $20,000 to freeze their eggs? >> i think it's empowering women because it gives them more of an option that they can take on their career now, then not be pressured to have children now.

>> reporter: facebook offers egg freezing and storage as part of the company's benefit package. apple will begin in january. apple told abc 7 news we want to empower women at apple to do the best work of their lives as they care for loved ones and raise their families. quite often, women put off having children because of their careers only to realize how hard it is to start a family later on. others give up their careers during the early child-bearing years. dr. carl herbert is with the pacific fertility center in san francisco. he says eggs become less viable over time. >> these eggs are changing over time so yes, the eggs that you have are more plentiful in your 20s and the percentage of good quality eggs is significantly higher. >> reporter: the harvesting of eggs has been around for decades. several hormone injections are needed to produce a fair amount of eggs. >> some women will produce ten eggs and some
