fraternity for drugging and raping a woman. today there are reports of another alleged incident. in this case, a member is accusing a fellow fraternity brother of sexually assaulting him. there may also be other victims. uc police say all of these cases are now in the hands of berkeley pd but want to give the campus community basic reminders. >> people have to give their affirmative consent in sexual instance so if somebody is incapacitated, they can't give consent. >> reporter: students we talked to say uc berkeley isn't doing enough to prevent sexual assault. they say to start, there needs to be more education on the issue. >> i think you come to berkeley which is a prestigious school, a lot of people in high school went out partying. that wasn't our scene. so this is culture shock. >> reporter: the national office says it's investigating its berkeley chapter but as of now, no facts have surfaced that support the allegations. lillian kim, abc 7 news.

an emotional anniversary today for a lot of people around the bay area. 25 years ago today, the loma prieta quake hit. santa cruz was devastated. abc 7 news cameraman clyde powell was the first to take us inside the crack that opened up in the nearby mountains at ground zero. abc 7 news reporter david louie joins us with more. >> reporter: very near where i'm standing 25 years ago, the loma prieta earthquake created a very large and dramatic chasm. it has been filled in and largely forgotten but there is still visible damage in downtown santa cruz. they gathered for a moment of silence to remember those who died. only a few feet away, a hole in the ground remains after 25 years where a bookstore once stood. it collapsed, killing two employees of a coffee shop from the falling bricks. one of them was 21-year-old shawn mccormick, seen in a family photo with his then 18 month old daughter amber. shawn's sister terry said the shock overwhelmed her and her

mother. >> my mom collapsed. she lost it. we had to take her to the hospital. just the hours and days following that was just surreal. >> reporter: the toddler who grew up without a father says today's gathering has eased the sadness of the loma prieta anniversary, as people remember the victims. >> it's a community coming together talking about it. it's nice. it makes me happy. which is good for today. >> reporter: the owner of the bookstore was overwhelmed, too, not just from the thousands of books that flew off the shelves but also by the help he received from customers and other santa cruz residents. >> we had 400 people line up, put on hard hats, spend two days emptying out the store and saving it. we were in a tent for three years. >> reporter: the old store is but a memory but at a new location, a children's rocking horse salvaged from the rubble at the damaged site serves as a symbol of rebirth of downtown santa cruz. >> this was the spot. >> reporter: abc 7 news

photographer clyde powell revisited the spot where 25 years ago, he shot this dramatic video of a huge crack near the quake's epicenter in the santa cruz mountains. it left little doubt of the power of a 6.9 magnitude quake. powell found a clever way to document the width and depth of the crack in the earth's crust. >> i got a five-pound camera i attached to a light stand with gaffer tape and just kind of walked it down into the crack as far as i could extend it, almost as long, about eight feet. >> reporter: the crack is no longer visible today, filled in and covered with gravel. no longer a reminder of a deadly event. >> it was kind of really the ground zero of the earthquake at the time because it was such a dramatic visual effect of what happened after that quake. >> reporter: in the santa cruz mountains, david louie, abc 7 news. in lieu of actually being the speaker, i will bring up --

>> right now, a service is taking place to mark the exact moment at 5:04 when the loma prieta earthquake hit. let's take a listen. >> thank you. good afternoon, everyone. i will be speaking again after to acknowledge a lot of people, but give me great pleasure, i was just asked recently to ring the bell and it's in commemoration for the lives lost in 1989, and so i will be doing that at 5:04 to signify the 25th commemoration of what happened here 25 years ago. >> would you like to step down and get ready for that? this is for the lives and the property lost and how indeed lucky we are to live here with these folks that we featured this afternoon to guide us. >> again, that was a live look in at the ceremony where they will be doing a moment of silence for the exact moment the earthquake hit. folks gathered in the east bay as well, where most of the deaths from the earthquake occurred. today, dozens remembered the 42 people killed when the cypress structure collapsed.

among them, david byrnes, who rushed to help the people buried in the rubble. >> on your belly, pitch black, you've got sights and sounds of vehicles crushed and then the aftershock would hit, and you would take a deep breath and collect yourself and go okay, i'm still alive. >> those who were here 25 years ago said the situation would have been much worse without the heroism of people like david byrnes and many others. >> let's go back to that ceremony marking the exact moment when the loma prieta earthquake hit. earthquake hit. it's a moment of silence. >> thank you very much, everybody. >> after looking at the service live where san francisco mayor ed lee and other dignitaries gathered right now for that. all told, the quake claimed 53 lives, four of them in san francisco, including a baby in an apartment that collapsed in the marina district.

so many of us remember that terrible time. it's impossible for me to forget as well. i was the first local reporter on the air right after that quake with very few resources because our power was out, our phones were down, we didn't have smart phones or social media. but we did have abc network's al michaels, covering the world series at candlestick with the blimp overhead. tonight we will take a look back at the loma prieta quake on this 25th anniversary. our abc 7 special is called 15 seconds, 25 years later, the loma prieta earthquake. it airs tonight at 6:30. i hope you can join us. a california highway patrol officer faces allegations of child pornography. 49-year-old eric lund is on administrative leave. vacaville police arrested him and booked him into jail. investigators tracked him down as part of an investigation into the downloading and sharing of child porn. they found an external hard drive in his vehicle with multiple downloaded child porn videos. he is a 26 year veteran of the chp which is conducting its own investigation into the charges.

we are learning more about the man accused of groping two girls in the east bay this week. christopher leroy german has been charged with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts against children under 14. he was arrested yesterday after police released this surveillance video from the target and walmart stores in san leandro where the incidents took place. abc 7 news has learned police are also investigating him for similar acts that took place in southern california. two people are expected to be okay after their car was broadsided by a hayward police officer. the accident happened just before 9:00 this morning on mission boulevard. hayward police say the officer was driving on mission with lights and siren when his patrol car slammed into an suv driven by an elderly man. the officer was responding to a bank robbery. the officer was not hurt. take a look at the traffic on the eastern span of the bay bridge. right now, from our emeryville camera, the morning commute turned into a crawl for motorists trying to get into san francisco. drivers had to slow down as they

crossed two steel plates. three westbound lanes of the bridge just before the fremont street exit. the gridlock stretched back to highway 24 near children's hospital in oakland. cal trans says it might take 60 working days to complete that remedial project. a life-long giants fan has a new souvenir after swapping a baseball for a bat. frank burke caught travis ishikawa's game-winning three run homer after it landed in the right field stands last night. the oakdale resident explained why he gladly swapped the ball for a bat autographed by travis. >> i follow the giants. they are like a workingman's team, a hard workingman's team and i'm a hard-working man. i was just the lucky guy that caught that bill. travis is the one that deserves all the credit for hitting that ball. i believe it belongs on his trophy case, not mine. >> sportswriter daniel brown with our media partner, the mercury news, shared this photo with us showing the two. it's hard to tell who was

google is setting unofficial records for political donations. the company has shelled out just over $1.4 million for this campaign cycle, triple what it spent in the last midterm election of 2010. analysts say it's a sign that silicon valley's increased efforts to shape policy on issues from taxes to visas.

the spending doesn't fall along partisan lines. the donations have been split 50/50 between democrats and republicans. the deadline to register to vote is monday. the election is november 4th. we have information about ballot measures, candidates and polling places where you live on our website, abc7news.com. president obama signed an executive order today calling for newer and secure technology for government-issued debit and credit cards. the president says the u.s. has to do more to stop security breaches for credit and debit card users. this includes cards that transmit federal benefits such as social security. today, the president also shared a story about his own recent credit card troubles. >> i went to a restaurant up in new york and my credit card was rejected. turned out i guess i don't use it enough. they thought there was fraud going on. >> little embarrassing. the president says fortunately the first lady had her credit card.

if you have been in downtown san francisco today, you may have noticed a big crowd of techies wandering around, some of them in strange costumes. jonathan bloom explains it's become an annual tradition that's fun but all about business. >> reporter: led by a woman wearing google glass and a couple guys in orange astronaut suits, it looks kind of like a pub crawl. it's exactly like a pub crawl. there's free popcorn and there are glasses. the safety kind, not the drinking kind. >> i did catch word that two will have kegs waiting for us. >> reporter: he is the founder of sf new tech, the monthly mixer like speed dating for startups. this year for the second time, he's taking that show on the road for the new tech crawl with help from the mayor's office. he's asked local tech companies to open their doors for fellow techies to come in and see what they're made of. >> we have a lot of startup founders, a lot of engineers, a

>> reporter: jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. the photo sharing app snapchat will start running ads starting this weekend. it says the ads will appear in the recent updates section of the app and users can choose to view them or not. snapchat says it's no secret why they started running ads. in a statement it says the answer's probably unsurprising. we need to make money. a top secret space plane landed at vandenberg air force base after spending nearly two years circling the earth. the so-called x-37b orbital text vehicle is an unmanned plane that looks like a mini shuttle. it spent 674 days in low earth orbit but exactly what it was doing is a mystery. air force officials only say it was conducting on-orbit experiments. this is the program's third mission with a fourth launch planned for next year. >> very exciting. meteorologist drew tuma in

step out, 72 in san francisco. 72 in san ramon. 71, san jose. half moon bay, 64 degrees. satellite and radar, here's the story we are tracking. first of all, a cold front is moving in from the west but it's doing so and weakening so the clouds aren't seeing as many showers in them as we had a couple hours ago and the showers really having a hard time moving inland. so the forecast animation will start off tonight at 7:00, mainly clouds in the north bay, a few showers. watch as the showers tend to stay north of san francisco, north of the bay. they really don't make it any further south than santa rosa. it all fizzles apart early tomorrow morning. the clouds depart and we will see mainly sunny skies across the region for our saturday. we will take you to hawaii. we are tracking a different story with hurricane ana, right now strengthening winds to 80 miles per hour. it is a category 1 storm moving to the west-northwest and the main island of hawaii will see soaking showers, very gusty winds by saturday morning.

earthquake. it all starts in half an hour. mastercard is giving the thumbs up to a new biometric credit card, a new twist on the contact payment card. instead of a personal identification card and signature, this card has a fingerprint sensor and works only when a customer's thumb is on the sensor. the biometric data is stored on the card but customers have to register their thumbprint first. an 80 foot inflatable tree has been set up in paris at the place vendome, a christmas tree. nobody likes it. they said it humiliates the city. the city says it was designed to spark interest ahead of an international art show. i'm sure it did that. three friends hung out with this camel in egypt before posing for this hilarious selfie. despite having a reputation for biting and spitting, seems this camel was eager to show a friendly side. before we go, we want to
