good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, october 19th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning to you. we are looking at live doppler 7hd where we are looking like we are cloud-free, but low clouds and fog begin to enter through the golden gate and they are at about 300 feet. we are looking at some visibility issue. in fact, anywhere down to a quarter to half-mile up in the north bay. 57 in san carlos, 61 san francisco, and three-mile visibility half moon bay. here's a look at the north bay where it is pretty dicey out there from napa to novato and santa rosa. be careful. we will go through much of the morning with some of the fog banked up along the coast. they do pull back.

it will be slightly cooler because you notice they aren't going to be far from the coast. we will talk about temperatures and rain coming in tomorrow when we return in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. residents of one union city neighborhood are on alert this morning after a mountain lion was spotted in their area. police had their guns drawn as they searched for the big cat yesterday afternoon after a group of women spot it had near a playground. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details from the union landing neighborhood. >> pretty long with a long tail and they knew it wasn't a cat, they knew it wasn't a golden retriever, they knew it was a mountain lion. >> reporter: gabrielle and his friends spotted the mountain lion around 1:30. it was there on a fence walk along old alameda creek. the women called police immediately. >> i just know they were out here with their rifles, and i thought they were look out here look for someone with a pellet

gun. >> they were look for a cat that was at least three feet tall. two cars full of officers scoured the neighborhood but they came up empty. >> there are people walking their dogs here and if they didn't find it, it went somewhere. >> that's what residents are worried about. >> this is the first mountain lion sighting on record west of the freeway. people are warning people with small animals to keep them inside. >> i'm going close off my dog guy door and when they go outside, i will watch them. >> this neighbor is taking things a step further. >> now it teams like i have to keep the garage down and be more aware now. >> he's also standing watch outside of his home, warning joggers, walkers and other neighbors that there's a mountain lion on the loose. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> and fresno are officials investigating the cause after fire at a duplex.

as residents waited for firefighters to arrive yesterday morning, a woman suddenly realized her father was trapped inside. >> my daddy is in there! my dad is in there! can you get him out for me! get my dad out! >> we've got to get him out of there! >> please! >> the fire began at 9:00 yesterday morning. the flames growing larger by the moment. as the woman begged for someone to save her dad, an explosion could be heard. but watch what happens. >> no, there's a man in there. [explosion sound.] >> we have to get the dad out there! >> run! >> oh, my god! >> everybody out? >> no, there's a man inside. >> is everybody out? >> oh, oh, thank god!

>> oh, thank god! >> is everybody out? >> that man, who was rescued, he is okay. he had to be treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters arrived shortly after that rescue. a man is under arrest accused of running over his ex-girlfriend and another woman in vallejo. police say 20-year-old man ran over the woman yesterday afternoon at low he will street and then took off. when officers returned and investigating, he led them on a chase where witnesses recognized him. both women were taken to the hospital where moderate injuries. the man is facing several charges, including attempted murder. new this morning, there's a man's picture released in connection with a robbery bring as a person of interest. authorities say he is described

as a black man with a medium to heavy build. he is seen in the video. you see there he's wearing a san francisco giants jersey and hat. anyone with information is asked to call mountain view police. turning now to the ebola crisis. a cruise ship carrying a healthcare worker who is being monitored for the disease has returned to texas. this is new video of the carnival magic dock in galveston early this morning. the passenger had blood samples that were from the ebola duncan, she had handled them. he died from the virus. so far she has no signs of the illness and remained self quarantined while on the ship. we have the latest from dallas. >> this is a critical weekend. >> a pivotal point for the people possibly exposed to ebola in dallas. after 21 days of being monitored, this weekend, the

nearly 50 people who had contact with thomas duncan before he was hospitalized showing no symptoms expected to be given the all-clear. >> we are going to be statistically less likely to see more cases. >> as a memorial service for duncan in north carolina, the nurses with the suspected virus while treating him continue in the hospital. meanwhile 75 others are being monitored, told to avoid public places and not to travel. but before that notice was issued, one of them, a supervisor who handled duncan's blood samples, went on a cruise ship. >> you have a ship stopped for someone who has virtually no risk of translating the disease. it is an overreaction. >> dozens of others also being monitored in ohio, concerned they could have been exposed when one of the nurses traveled from dallas to cleveland and

back in the days before she was diagnosed. >> risk across the border is considered very long. >> abc news, dallas. >> some people are taking matters into their own hands. surgical masks, protective gear have become popular items to buy. sergio quintana has the details. >> as sfo recent travelers say some passengers are clearly worried about the spread of ebola on flights. >> i sat amongst a group of ten ladies with face mask, on. >> these two just flew in from texas from australia. they both feel it is overblown. >> the chances of getting it are so slim. >> healthcare workers repeatedly said ebola and not an airborne pathagen and can only be

distributed through bodily fluids. most their protective suits for this company online is sold out. they sell equipment for first responders. and there's been a run on personal protective equipment, including suits and gas masks. >> how many do you think you have sold in the last couple of weeks? >> i would say in the low hundreds. >> at about 17 bucks, this is turning out to be one of the most popular items here, especially in the last couple of weeks. the only problem is the face shield you would use along with the elastic hoodie is all sold out. some customers say they are uneasy about the way the ebola case necessary the u.s. have been handled. >> i think they have every right to want to protect themselves. i would be doing the same thing. >> this halloween season some people are buying a costume that in past years they usually only

ho ho ho green giant! >> the presidio will use a fish-killing chemical to try to invade several invasive species from the san francisco lake. they said they are trying to move the fish from mountain lake to make room for native species. they will use a plant based chemical to get rid of the invasive fish. they say all traces of the chemical will disappear after three years. the port of san francisco's dry dock number 1 is headed to china for scrap. it was sold to a dutch company for one dollar. but the port authority is saying $3 million to deliver it. the dock was used to repair

ships below the waterline. it was decommissioned some 15 years ago. it broke away from it's mooring back in 2002, ramming the island. >> what would you do if you bought a new, had it installed throughout your house and then it began to unravel. that's what happened to this couple and they turned to michael finney for help. >> sherwin and clara schultz of walnut creek loved their carpet when it was first installed. but now they aren't so happy. >> the little loops that were coming out. >> instead of everything being tight like a berber, there was some shaggy loops around that just wasn't supposed to be there. >> clara shows us how strands of woven yarn keep coming loose, stick being straight up from the carpet. she counted several from popped up here, the den and in the dining room them tried pushing the loop in and the more came

out. >> the carpet was beginning to look very bumpy. >> she said the rug began unraveling about six months after they bought it. >> it wasn't supposed to happen that way and i was extremely disappointed. >> so we contacted home depot. >> that's where they bought the carpet that handled the ten year warranty. home depot sent out an installer but no one fixed the problem. finally a home depot inspector came out. they said, yes, the carpeting did not look like, something should be done and they were going to try to do it. >> however, months later they were still watching their rug unravel. clair kept calling home depot. >> we couldn't get a response at all. >> then they contacted 7 on your side. we told home depot about the problem carpet and within hours a man was at their door. >> she came before 5:00 the same day and said, oh, this is not right. home depot has to make this right for you. >> and it did.

named, has had several discussions with a new stadium but none so far with the oakland a's. they have had trouble finding investors to reinvolving the site into a sports and entertainment hub. this tuesday the city council is set to discuss the deal with developers. this morning the giants are flying to kansas city to take on the royals in the world series. but first they got in one final workout yesterday at at&t park. this will be the giants third appears in five years. but the team knows what it takes a ring, but the royals will be tough competitors. k.c. has won all eight of their postseason games so far and is hoping to win its first world series title since 1985. tuesday night's game one will feature a strong pitching match-up, giants ace madison bumgarner will take the mound

against royals ace james shields. the giants have a surprise gift for the fan who caught the game-winning ball in last thursday's playoff ball. frank caught travis ishikawa 3-run homer ball after it landed in the right field stands. the oakland resident returned it to ishikawa learning he want it had back and as a thank you the giants gave burke four tickets to this world's friday game three at at&t park. yesterday he told the media he still want believe it happened. >> yeah. the guy has a humongous heart and i want to thank him personally. goat to thank him personally, but i guess thank him again. and i didn't even want anything in return but to hand it over. but he gave me a bat and took pictures. but how cool a souvenir that could have been for him so for him to do that, i'm blown away. >> that was nice of sportswriter

first live doppler 7hd. we are looking at some clouds along the coast. they are beginning to enter the north bay. 7:22 is the official sunrise setting at 6:27. just a little over 11 hours of lay light. vollmer peak camera, you notice that it looks pretty clear here. but we do have some fog. 54 degrees and fog around half moon bay. good morning, san jose, 57. it's 60. a perfect running weather for the marathon and from our sutro tower camera looks good. the fog is being held right over by the head lands, beginning to move over the golden gate bridge and we see more this morning as the atmosphere cools. 56 and clear in concord and livermore. and napa looking at some fog, also into novato. roof camera, the orange ferry building. it will be sunny today, but along the coast it will be cloudy. sea breeze is going to pick up and we will see a later burn-off of the low clouds and fog.

we didn't see many clouds yesterday morning at all. really did warm up quickly. it was 80 yesterday in oakland. today we are back into the 70s. chance of rain comes into play. and we will time that out hour by hour. so with the low clouds and fog at the coast and that front moving into the pacific northwest, the clouds are going to cozy up to the coast and that will allow for temperatures especially in parts of the north bay to be cooler today. so fast forward to 6:00 monday morning and the rain is not far off. about 9:00, a look at the north bay around marin, san francisco and slowly these scattered showers will push on through the east a few along the santa cruz mountain. it's noontime here and we will look for rainfall amounts anywhere from .2 and then we will see conditions clear up throughout the later part of the day. in the tropical pacific you can see how close hannah is to hawaii. with winds of 80 miles an hour, it will be lashing it with heavy

rain and high surf. but about 125 mile-an-hour away, 120 miles away from honolulu. so getting closer to hawaii. a minimal hurricane but still heavy rain n the south bay, just about the same with mid-and upper 70s. san jose more sunshine. partly to mostly sunny here from san mateo 71, 74 mountain view. clouds from half moon bay and cooler conditions. daly city 64, 72 south city. in the north bay you will notice the low 70s instead of upper 70s for santa rosa. 74 vallejo. coolest day in oakland at 73. it should be a nice afternoon. and inland mid-70s for the san ramon valley and 76 in pleasanton. so if you are headed over to oakland for the raiders, you will notice that temperatures will be very pleasant with plenty of sunshine and the lower 70s. accuweather seven-day forecast. tomorrow showers, then cooler for tuesday.

it's reducing visibility in the north bay. 55 napa. novato is look at dense cloud cover. 56 and clear in concord and livermore. you see the visibility anywhere from a quarter mile to a half-mile. half moon bay doing better and inland not a problem. so we will look for the low clouds and the fog to be with us throughout the morning hours. and as they pull back, it will take some time. in fact, the clouds will stay at the san mateo coast, keeping temperatures in the mid-60s there with more cloud cover for the half moon bay pumpkin festival. cooler day there. just about 70 in fran and low to mid-70s around the east bay. with little and upper 70s. everyone sees a cooler day tomorrow and maybe a few raindrops. we will talk in detail about that coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. there's troubling news in the case of a missing university of virginia student. people say they found human remains that could be those of 18-year-old hannah.

we have the latest. >> police and volunteers have scoured the countryside around share -- charlottesville for weeks looking for hannah. >> thousands of hours have been spent by hundreds of law enforcement, civilian volunteers in an effort to find hannah. >> graham disappeared on september 13th, last seen on this surveillance video, along with a man. now the potentially devastating news. 13 volunteers finding human remains on an abandoned property. >> the remains will be taken to the office of the chief medical examiner in richmond for examination, autopsy and official identification. >> graham's parents have been notified. now police are asking anybody who may have seen suspicious activity in that area to contact police. police already have a suspect in the case. 32-year-old jesse lee roy matthew junior has been charged

with abduction with intent. and he may face additional charges in a twine disappearance. several years ago in a field not far from where human remains were found saturday, police found a body of 20-year-old virginia tech student morgan harrington. police say matthew, junior is physically linked to the murder. michelle franson, abc news, new york. the fire department is getting ready for the next big disaster in san francisco. more than 250 volunteers from the neighborhood emergency response team, or nert, signed up for a drill yesterday atst fort mason. the fire department set up eight mock neighborhoods to practice search and rescue techniques, triage injured victims and other skills. >> i want to protect myself and my family and give something back to the community.

awareness for the debilitating disease. funds raised from the 1.5-mile walk will go toward care, services and research for the als association golden west chapter. opening ceremonies for today's event begin at 10:00. the walk gets underway at 11:00 at heavy farm park in wall creek. san francisco's ronald mcdonald house will soon be able to help even more families with critically ill children. it's extra attacker band to go a second location inside the new ucsf children's hospital. cheryl jennings and meteorologist mike niko took a tour of both the new house and the original. >> six months, 25 weeks is when he was born. i was in the hospital about a week. and they were trying to put off the labor and it worked for a while and then it didn't work. >> they had a major scare with

their new son julien when he was born three months before his due date. this is cell phone video of little julien. >> the doctor came back in and said he's a fine. he's a little guy, but he's fine. >> julien was in the neonatal intensive care unit. mom and dad living at the ronald mcdonald house on scott street in san francisco. they don't have to drive 90 miles back and forth from their home now. but he was at home when he found out his wife was going into early labor. >> so i rushed back down, thinking that i was going to miss the birth of my child, was she going to be okay, was i maybe going to lose my wife and child in the same swoop. sitting in traffic on the 101 thinking all these things. >> now they have a home away from home here at the house while julien is getting stronger. and they have a built-in support system. >> because he's three months early, we almost -- almost didn't know how to react to

loving him when you are so afraid of losing him every moment. so those first couple weeks were so hard. but then when we talked to other families and realized that's how everybody feels, it really helped us in terms of balancing. >> they are able to get their own laundry done here and don't have to worry about a decent meal. >> they cook meals for us so we don't have to worry about that. there are showers you are can take and they feel it more like at home. we get home every day and that's my day. >> and soon more parents like them will be able to benefit because a second ronald mcdonald house is almost complete. it's located on the first floor of the new ucsf children's hospital at mission bay. for families with children in immediate crisis. >> here we are in our kitchen and dining area. >> the executive director showed meteorologist mike niko around. >> the gourmet kitchen is just waiting for chefs volunteering to cook for the families.

there are 11 bedrooms. they have a tv and a compute we're they can keep in touch with their children's medical team are go online. >> they had no time to do anything about their child yet they had time on their hands. >> six bathrooms, a large laundry room and private lockers and the hospital has a helicopter landing pad. >> most people don't realize that a child whose rushed by helicopter to our city lands at sfo and then is put in an ambulance and brought to a hospital. we're talking about a world in which minutes make a difference. >> one of the greatest advantages of having the ronald mcdonald house here in the hospital is the fact that parents are just an elevator ride away from seeing their kids. >> being inside the hospital would be your dream house. in the middle of the night you can get on that elevator, go up and check on your child. >> and that will help ease the

in 17 years that the aims research center opened its doors to the public. a once in a million years event is happening above mars to the. a comet about as big as a mountain will pass close to the red planet around 11:30 this morning our time. come met called siding spring will come within 87,000 miles of mars. astronomers say that's so close mars will be engulfed in the come met's dust and gas. a near miss by the come met has never been reported by earth. n.a.s.a. has sent up explorers to witness the incoming come met on its first known visit to this part of the solar system. that's really fascinating. >> very cool. >> lisa argen here now with a look at the accuweather forecast. >> we've got a cooler day today. a couple reasons why. and the cold front is on the way. so we have the weak little systems come through. this one is looking a little stronger.

that means measurable precip. perhaps as far south as the south bay but certainly the north bay. you will need your umbrellas tomorrow. here's a look at doppler weather hd. the clouds are beginning to push into san francisco and marin county. so those changes right there, along with a southerly wind, will allow for a cooler afternoon. the east bay camera right now. dark, after in oakland. >> 57 san carlos and 55 half moon bay. clear on the inland east bay u you look closely and you can see the fog here from the sutro tower camera. temperatures in the 50s in napa where visibility is less than a quarter mile through novato. petaluma at 57. good morning fairfield, 58 and the cool from concord. golden gate bridge right now looking very, very soupy with the fog staying put here and i long the san mateo coast you will get the sunshine, a a little bit anyway, around stinson. but today a cloudy and cooler day at the coast.

so sunny skies return for the rest of us and a chance of rain arrives tomorrow. here's the water vapor imagery. you can see what's happening on the far left hand corner of your screen. it's a cold front and an area of low pressure. and by about 5:00 tomorrow morning that's where the front is going to be. it will be pushing rain into the bay area, bringing us a wet commute throughout parts of the northeast bay and san francisco. so right here by 8:00, 9:00, you will notice we have showers, and as they push on through to the east bay, it will be a little bit later in the day, perhaps noontime. still looking at some showers and maybe a few leftover showers around the santa cruz mountains and into the south bay throughout the afternoon. it's somewhat impressive. much more impressive is this hurricane that is still awfully close to hawaii here. it has missed the rest of the island chain but you can see very heavy rain and the high surf from honolulu, even though it's about 125 miles from honolulu, through kauai, and it

continues to turn westward, northwesterly. as it does that we will see the heavy rain throughout the average and evening tonight and then things should improve. with the storm in the traffic northwest we are looking at large swells generated tomorrow and tuesday along the coast. today 67 in monterey. 77 in yosemite, and we will see more upper 70s from san jose today through concord. it will be cooler in oakland at 73. cooler in the north bay. low 70s in san rafael. about 70 san francisco. accuweather seven-day forecast, cooler for everyone tomorrow with the clouds and hopefully you will get showers in your neighborhood. temperatures will continue to be cool on tuesday and the warmup wednesday, thursday, friday. at this point friday, saturday still looks above normal. but we will let you know. that could change. rainfall amounts, i don't know if i said anywhere from a quarter in inch the north bay to about a tenth in the south bay. not much but at least it's measurable. >> and good football weathered

returns to san francisco's mission district. the free event kicks off at 11:00 this morning. it goes dawn valencia street between 26th and the plaza. there will be free bike rentals, yoga, live music. it's the last sunday streets event of the year and will share the day with the fall festival which will have food, crafts, games and activities from the exploratorium. today's sunday streets runs until 4:00. up next, on the abc7 sunday morning news at 6:00, heroic moments caught on video as a man runs into a fire to save a life. >> they were out here with the rifles. i thought they were out here looking for somebody with a pellet gun. >> with guns drawn, authorities search for a mountain lion. the first time one has ever been spotted in the east bay neighborhood.
