good tuesday morning, i'm t.j. holmes. >> and i'm reena ninan. we begin with the breaking news, oscar pistorius will spend five years in jail for killing his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp. >> alexander marquardt was in the courtroom and joins us on the phone from pretoria. tell us the reaction like in the courtroom to hear that he's going to prison. five years was the sentence. >> reporter: well, good morning, it took just about on hour for the judge to read her decision, five years in prison. it was relatively quiet in terms of the reaction. pistoriusbowed his head, wiping away tears and others were weeping. people are filing out, including the two families, that of reeva steenkamp and oscar pistorius. i asked her parents if they thought justice had been served, yes, but they will never have closure. the only way to have closure is

to have reeva back. and his family, not outwardly crying, i asked if they had a reaction, neither his father or brother did. it's important to note after ten months he's eligible for a conversion of the sentence. could be, for example, given to house arrest. but for the time being, he has been taken into custody. he did not come out today. the sentence, as you mentioned, five years in prison. he can appeal. and that's one of the major questions right now. we don't have an answer just yet. we expect the family to speak in just about an hour. and throughout the reading of this sentence, it did appear that the judge was not going to go extremely leniently and give pistorius house arrest as the defense had requested. >> okay, 49 days this trial has been going on. alexander marquardt, thank you

so much. the other major story we're following. the new guidelines the cdc issued overnight to protect health care workers. this is on the ebola front lines. >> it was after two nurses came down with the virus after treating a patient who eventually died. marci gonzalez in dallas for us. >> reporter: after weeks of concerns and calls for change, the cdc announcing it's updating its protocols for health care workers treating ebola patients. the head of the cdc now calling in part for protective gear to leave every part of the skin covered. though admitting we may never know how nina pham and amber vinson contracted the virus while treating ebola victim thomas duncan. >> the bottom line is the guidelines didn't work for that hospital. dallas shows that taking care of ebola is hard. >> reporter: meanwhile, a major milestone for others who spent 21 long days watching for symptoms. duncan's fiance louise troh and family out of quarantine after being given the all-clear.

>> she is thrilled to be free. >> reporter: more than 40 others who had contact with duncan before he was hospitalized taken off the watch list. including several children. >> when i heard the news, i was scared. but when they gave us the paper that we were safe, then i was okay. >> reporter: 116 people are being monitored in dallas. many are health care workers. and nearly 200 other who is travelled to cleveland and back with amber vinson are being watched for symptoms. and many more monitored in ohio for this reason. now vinson's family manes the cdc gave her permission to travel, and they have hired an attorney to defend her reputation. sweden is widening the search for a distressed russian submarine in the waters nearstockle hom.

killing a woman in hotel. he led them to six more women in abandoned homes and could be before discoveries to comb. >> could go back 20 years. >> it could indicate that possible other victims could surface. >> he is a sex offender in texas and solicited them on a website similar to craig's list. and jodi arias is back in court, attorneys fighting for her life. she claimed she was acting in self-defense when she stabbed her boyfriend 30 times and shot him in the head. the first jury deadlocked on the death penalty or life in prison. and a man was mistakenly released from prison. rodriguez parnell is accused of shooting and killing a man last year and assaulting a prison employee after his arrest.

corrections officials have no idea what went wrong. and developing overnight, police in pennsylvania say there's another sighting of eric frein. a local law enforcement official reported seeing him near the swiftwater post office, and near where a woman saw a rifle-toting man believed to be frein friday night. schools are open with added security. a passing note this morning. fashion icon oscar de la renta has died. he received legendary status by dressing jaqueline kennedy. he was from the white house to every hollywood red carpet. one of his wedding gowns was worn by george clooney's new wife. he died from complications from cancer. he was 82 years old. celebrities have been sharing fond memories. and showers in the northeast and northwest.

well, a major air bag recall is being expanded this morning. nearly 5 million drivers are being warned to have their air bag replaced. most were built between 2000 and 2006. in the defective air bags, the deflator actually explodes like an ied, propelling deadly shrapnel. some drivers haven't gotten the recall notice yet. >> a lot of folks who own vehicles have not received the notificati notification. and that's a real issue. >> the air bags have been used in toyota, mazda, bmw as well as nissan. they come from one plant in mexico owned by a japanese company. a company behind the guardrails on many highways has been found liable of defrauding the federal government and ordered to pay $175 million. trinity industries failed to
