>> reporter: an international team of scientists led by dr. feraman and others at ucsf has discovered some women of latin descent have a genetic variant that protects them from breast cancer. >> the lower the risk from any br group in americas before colonization. >> reporter: those women were 40% less likely to have breast cancer. women with two children doubled the protection to 80%. the study took more than seven years and included women from latin american countries, though the bulk came from here in california. the latinas counter cancer helped with consultation and identification of study volunteers. the ceo thinks the results could be a game changer. >> i think really cutting edge

and a lot of reason for that is because they are looking at a community of color, a group of women underresearched, who really probably could bring with them some of the answers to the breast cancer puzzle. >> reporter: the findings could one day lead to new treatment options or medications that have relevance for all women. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. there was a massive raid in oakland this morning. investigators say leaders of the black muslim temple on 27th street obtained government contracts for security work using bogus credentials. sky 7 hd was over the building earlier today. police raided it around 6:00 this morning and arrested at least one person. half a dozen others are wanted on more than 40 felony charges. those charges range from tax evasion to insurance and real estate fraud. three teenagers are now in custody for the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old sonoma county boy. nathaniel torres was shot and killed outside a house party on

june 22nd. the sheriff's department says deputies located a suspect after getting information from the fbi and officials in mexico. all of those are from santa rosa. they are not being held in arizona and waiting for extradition to california. >> no excuses! premeditated murders! >> the family and friends of a san francisco teenager who was fatally stabbed to death in san francisco last month held a demonstration today calling on the district attorney to try the suspect as an adult. 14-year-old rashawn williams was killed september 2nd while standing outside a store in the mission district. his suspected killer, who happens to be a former classmate of his, appeared in court today. almost exactly one year since 13-year-old andy lopez was shot to death by a sonoma county sheriff's deputy, the county has approved plans to purchase two lots at the site where lopez was killed. that land will be turned into a park apparently as a memorial to

lopez. deputy eric gelhouse claimed he thought the pellet gun lopez carried was an actual assault rifle. oakland may have come up with a way to keep the raiders in town. abc 7 news reporter alan wong joins us with more. >> reporter: for the last two years, oakland has struggled to recruit a major investor for its 120 acre coliseum city but for the first time today, after a closed session meeting, council member larry reed said that he feels comfortable the raiders will have a new billion dollar stadium, the exclusive negotiating agreement extends the talks for 90 crucial days and names the renaissance companies as the major investor. its ceo said he believes it will get the raiders and the a's on board for a multi-use sports and retail facility along oakland's shoreline. >> we are not making kool-aid.

it's not just going to flower up and all of that happen. but we believe that we can open negotiations. we believe that we can identify the things that need to be done. we can identify a master developer. >> reporter: the master developer would actually build and construct this coliseum project. they are still looking for him now. council member or that company. council member larry reed said he has been working on this project for 18 years and he was one of the people who was pessimistic about this ever happening, but today, he said he finally believes it's going to happen. still a lot of work to be done but the city now feels that they have some real money behind the coliseum city project. i'm alan wong, abc 7 news. >> anything that keeps the raiders from moving to l.a., people will be encouraged by. california nurses groups are encouraged that they will be better protected from ebola after a meeting with the governor today. the nurses told governor jerry brown during a closed door session at the capitol that hospitals are not ready to treat

ebola patients and don't have the necessary gear or the training. governor brown told them the state is working to ensure their safety and the nurse groups thanked him for his leadership in this area. meanwhile, santa clara county supervisors and nurses there also tackling the difficult issue of ebola, specifically how prepared the county is to handle the disease if it should be detected locally. the protocols addressed today involve questioning patients about recent travel to west africa. if ebola is suspected, that person will be brought back into a specialized room while health care workers put on protective equipment. >> an impermeable hood and neck cover with a full face shield, powered air purifying respirator, an inner layer of fluid-resistant tyvek jump suit and boots with fluid resistant leg covers. >> right now there are no known cases of ebola in the state of california. the state department lists the

risk of ebola spreading as extremely low. in fact, many health experts actually are warning americans to focus on the flu instead, which kills thousands of people in the u.s. every year. the short-term san francisco board of supervisors has voted 7-4 in favor of an ordinance to regulate short-term rentals in the city. the legislation reinforces prohibition against converting residential housing into full-time hotels and allows primary residents to rent their apartments or homes on a limited basis to help supplement housing costs. home share supporters such as air b & b gathered at city hall to stress the importance of this legislation. >> reporter: this legislation includes many safeguards against those who give our activity a bad name. we do not need to build arbitrary walls around our neighborhoods and keep so-called strangers out. we need to be more inclusive, not more exclusive. >> the legislation does not allow short term rental

permission for secondary or vacation homes without permanent occupancy to protect residential housing stock. senator dianne feinstein opposes home sharing legalization, saying it will destroy the integrity of zoning laws throughout the city. mayor ed lee has ten days to consider it. much more to come on abc 7 news at 5:00. coming up, just how desperate is the cash-strapped golden gate bridge district. >> now you will tell me that i got to pay to walk across it, too? performing under pressure. the bigwig asking questions and listening carefully to the answers. plus the san francisco startup that's providing google-like buses to the tech scene down south. 7 on your side's michael finney on space heater safety.

the golden gate bridge district is facing a multi-million dollar deficit and now it's floating a plan to try to stay above water. that plan is to charge fees for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross the bridge. abc 7 news reporter vic lee joins us from the bridge with that story. >> reporter: this is what the bridge is facing. >> the district has a $33 million five-year deficit that they are trying to address. so in order to figure out how to increase revenue, how to cut costs, this is one of the many initiatives they are considering. >> reporter: the one initiative out of 45 initiatives, i might add, that's the most controversial is charging pedestrians and bicyclists a toll or fee to cross the bridge. the idea didn't sit well with almost all of the tourists and locals we spoke with.

>> we pay a lot to come here so to pay for this. >> we already raised the price to seven bucks for cars crossing. i got to pay that every day. now you're going to tell me i got to pay to walk across it, too? seems a bit ridiculous. >> reporter: it's not a new idea. for three decades up until 1970, there was a toll charge for walkers. >> it was a dime to put in the turnstile and cross the bridge. >> reporter: we did find some bridge pedestrians who said they were okay with paying. >> i'm okay with that. anything to keep the bridge up. >> i would be okay with it if it was a small enough fee like a dollar, 50 cents. >> reporter: about ten years ago, the bridge board brought it up again not only for pedestrians but bicyclists, too. but the bike lobby fought back and the board retreated. the bike coalition promises to wage war again. >> it's a contradiction to the golden gate bridge's own goals of reducing the number of people in cars, reduction of congestion on the bridge. >> reporter: the bridge board will discuss its financial plans friday. even if the board likes the

fees, they will need to study the feasibility before it comes back to the board again. that could take years. vic lee, abc 7 news. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg is headed back to school, sort of. he's joining the board of one of china's top business schools. facebook has been trying to get a foothold in the chinese market for years. some other business news. daimler is selling its stake in tesla. not sure why. shares in tesla fell in after hours trading. google and other tech firms are investing half a billion dollars into a firm called magic leap. the florida company is said to be working on virtual reality eyewear. bay area tech companies are known for offering their employees luxury bus rides to work and now that idea has spread to southern california. the search giant yp reached out to san francisco startup ride pal to shuttle workers. yp says the perk is necessary because the competition for

technologists in los angeles has become fierce. ride pal is using public park and rides as pickup and dropoff locations. now that the weather is getting a little colder you might be pulling out the space heaters. >> consumer reports is partnering exclusively with 7 on your side's michael finney to find out exactly how safe they may be. >> or unsafe depending on which ones you're talking about. space heaters account for one-third of all home heating fires each year. more than 80% of home heating fire deaths. consumer reports says if you have an older one, consider replacing it. the new ones are much, much safer. kevin reilly lost his restaurant when a fire started in the apartment above. he says firefighters determined the blaze was sparked by a space heater. >> it was all of maybe 45 seconds up there. that's all it took. that hallway filled up with smoke very very quickly. >> consumer reports checked a variety of space heaters to see how well they worked and if they have the latest safety features. all the heaters tested have a safety switch that turns them

off if they overheat or tip over. they all passed this safety check. testers measured how hot this terrycloth towel gets and see whether it burns or catches fire. none did. >> even so, we recommend placing space heaters at least three feet away from any flammable items like curtains, bedding or newspapers. >> always plug directly into the socket. don't use an extension cord. in another test, this dummy is loaded with sensors to help measure how fast the heaters can warm you up or spot heat say just your desk area. >> some heaters in the 15 minute test could only raise the dummy's temperature four degrees, while the best could raise them much higher. >> among large heaters, this honeywell is excellent at spot heating and passed all consumer reports safety tests. it costs $190. for far less, this compact holmes heater passed consumer reports safety tests and is a best buy. for $40, it can heat a room

quickly, though it's not quite as fast at spot heating. be aware that one space heater was recently recalled by the manufacturer. it's a whole room vortex heater from vornado, vh-110 model. this has been blamed in 29 instances of overheating and melting, including seven fires. the heaters were sold in stores and online from june 2013 through may 2014. for more information about the recall, go to abc7news.com. we will have all the information there. overall, very very good news. very safe. >> some of those heaters are scary. you turn them on, you get that funny smell initially. >> good to know. thank you. now let's get to game one of the world series. you can see on a map that we've got the kansas city royals are the most buzzed about team dominating 62% of the conversation compared to 38% for the giants. but you know what, baseball games aren't won by twitter. so there. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us live in kansas city.

after waiting for days, finally, it's game on. >> reporter: finally it is game on. just want to clarify something. we are in kansas city. turns out independence and kansas city, the border is about 100 yards away. we crossed over, didn't know it. the game is under way. this parking lot that was a moving sea of blue has now moved inside the stadium. slashes of orange, few and far between. >> i hope it's a good series. >> reporter: it must be a bit strange for giants fans to see rooters for an opposing team wearing blue and being nice about it. >> you guys are cool. you're all right. >> how do you know? >> i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. >> reporter: turns out giants and royals fans have at least one thing in common. both regard "don't stop believing" to be their anthems. ♪ don't stop believing hold on to that feeling ♪ ♪ street lights blah blah blah. don't know anything after that.

>> reporter: but wait. that is a san francisco song written by a bay area band. does the word thievery come to mind? >> got copyright on it? >> reporter: let's get our bearings around kauffman stadium. the last time they saw a series here that grass was artificial turf. kauffman is a sleek jetson style 1973 edifice that is easy on the eyes. it's a baseball park or is it a water park? and the k as they call it has the largest outfield in the major leagues. it's perfectly symmetrical, built for fast teams, small ball, 410 feet to dead center, 330 feet down the line. >> it's the biggest, i'm going with it. >> reporter: that's the groundskeeper, trevor. h he describes kauffman as being predictable. >> i kind of like it. you look at the other parks with nooks and crannies. from a groundskeeping standpoint i'm just like wow, that's got to be a challenge. >> reporter: though it's all a

it is actually looking great. mostly cloudy skies in kansas city, missouri at game time tomorrow. we are looking at temperatures around the low 60s, dropping down to the upper 50s when the giants take on the royals. i think we should say don't stop believing the giants are going to pull this one off as we take a look at live doppler 7 hd. a few clouds going through the bay area. there is a storm in the gulf of alaska that has been generating some large waves and so our coastline is still under a beach hazard statement. there is risk of rip currents for the west, northwest facing beaches through late tonight. keep that in mind. beautiful view from the east bay hills camera of high, thin clouds. temperatures at 63 in san francisco. 67 oakland. san jose, 63. our highs so far have ranged from the low 60s to the mid 70s. san jose got up to 70. it is sunny now. temperatures in the low 70s santa rosa, napa currently livermore, concord. pretty narrow range.

and looking towards ocean beach, you see a few clouds there. high clouds tomorrow, a chance of showers in the north bay on thursday. there is more rain coming friday night going into saturday morning. when you take a look at the specific satellite picture, you see this large fetch of moisture, but this long fetch of moisture is not all going to get here. just some high clouds for now, going into your wednesday, and then things change on thursday. rain line's to the north thursday morning and slowly comes down towards the north bay so thursday, there is a chance of some light rain there. take your umbrellas if you live or work if the north bay. the rain line shifts northward, but then by late friday night going into saturday morning, we do have a chance of some rain for the entire bay area and moves on out just in time for world series game four saturday. it is going to be dry. overnight temperatures really dropping. this is when you know the seasons have changed. you are really starting to feel it in the mornings with the long nights.

the country's top educator was in san francisco today to see how students are doing with the new common core standards. arne duncan visited a class where he saw some of the math classwork kids are being given. common core relies less on memorization and focuses on problem solving. the new standards caused a lot of controversy around the country from parents who say these teaching methods are just too difficult. the education secretary noted it also requires new teaching techniques from teachers. >> for me, the theme that was most important was to hear how much the teach ers were struggling with this and thinking about it and trying to get better every single day. that's exactly the kind of mindset and skills we are trying to instill in our children.

>> this is the first year common core math standards have been fully implemented in san francisco schools. fitness enthusiasts and couch potatoes needing motivation to get fit, get to san francisco's marina green fitness court at webster street saturday at 9:00 in the morning. abc 7 is one of several sponsoring the national fitness campaign fitness court challenge and fund-raiser for the city's rec and park departments. 16 trainers will compete to see who can complete the most repetitions at each station. the public will get to see how the free court is used to get fit themselves. >> the campaign is important because people need places they can go outdoors in public spaces to get healthy. national fitness campaign brings people and partners together to build healthy cities. >> there will be a free boot camp and teeshirts and friprize for the first 500 participants. go to abc7news.com for a link to register. a chicago man tells
