embassy. >> everybody's on high alert. we have team coverage beginning with dan harris in ottawa. good morning, dan. >> reporter: george. good morning. right behind me here, the war memorial and the parliament building where these acts of violence played out within minutes. this morning, learning much more about the suspected shooter and the act of raw courage that stopped him in his tracks. [ gun shots ] a day of horror in the normally quiet capital city of ottawa. it all started before 10:00 a.m. when the suspect, a 32-year-old canadian named michael zehaf-bibeau, a petty criminal who had recently converted to sclaum, alleislam, alleged bye walked up to the national war memorial with a rifle, shooting and killing trooper nathan cirillo. who was guarding the site. the shooter, his face half covered with a scarf. raised his hands in triumph. by-standers trying to resuscitate him, but he later

died. minutes later, gunfire echoing through the halls of the parliament bidding right nearby. this video captures the chaos. lawmakers and reporters, scrambling for cover, barricading themselves inside of rooms. the prime minister, stephen harper whisked to safety. reporter cormic mcsweeney was on the phone with his editor when the chaos erupted. >> i don't know. there's a bunch -- a bunch of gunshots. a single guy came in with a shotgun. there were -- yes, yes, put me on air right now. >> reporter: the rampage only ending when a sergeant at arms, kevin vickers, shot and killed him. vickers' role was largely ceremonial. but even know he wore robe, he had access to a firearm and clearly knew how to use it. with lawmakers now saying vickers saved their lives, "gma" tracked down his brother. >> in the time of need, when the

nation called upon him, he was there, and de what he had to do and we're just very, very proud. >> reporter: but even after the gunman was stopped, police fearing other shooters on the loose swarmed in the city center. they used a robot to search the car the suspect was driving for explosives. you need to leave! people on lockdown told not to move, not to even go near their windows, for hours. and this morning, that lockdown which lasted well into the evening has now been lifted. in fact, you can see the traffic streaming by me here. also this morning police are now saying that zehaf-bibeau was the lone gunman. still a crime scene as police endeavor to answer two looming questions, what was his motive and did he act alone? >> those are the big ones. and now we have brian ross. good morning. >> good morning. canadian officials this morning are calling michael zehaf-bibeau a terrorist.

records obtained by abc news, he had minor criminal convictions for drugs and robbery. and told canadian news outlets they blocked his efforts to travel to syria to join isis. as stephen harper reminded canadians in a nationwide address, this terror attack is the second in three days, targeting canadian soldiers. >> fellow canadians, in the days to come, we will learn about the terrorist and any accomplices he may have had. but this week's events are a grim reminder that canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world. >> reporter: it was just monday that another young canada with ties to isis and had his passport revoked was shot dead in quebec, after he used his car to run down two canadian soldiers in uniform, killing one of them. >> what took place is clearly linked to terrorist ideology. >> reporter: authorities say so many canadians have gone to

syria to join isis, that they have even created their own recruitment video was iconic canadian screens. >> before islam, i was like any other regular canadian, i watched hockey. >> reporter: canadians have been seen burping their passports and carrying out brutal murders. and the internet has been filled with propaganda to kill canadians and allies of the united states, using whatever weapons are available. said one leader, kill him in any manner or way, however it may be. and in the latest case, the mother of the suspected shooter is reported to be a senior canadian immigration official. >> brian, we don't know anything more yet about ties between this shooter and isis, but this is precisely the kind of attack our haw enforcement officials have been worried about. >> there's a warning this week from the u.s. department of homeland security. that isis sim pa sympathizers may try to target law enforcement in this country and

around the world. >> thanks very much. and turn now to the white house fence jumper. it was the first incident since the head of the secret service lost her job after the high-profile break-in last month. this time, as you can see in this video, the intruder didn't stand a chance. agents and security dogs on him within seconds. and pierre thomas is in washington with the latest. good morgton with the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning. my sources tell me the suspect chose the wrong time to jump that fence. it was only hours after that terror attack in canada, and just weeks after that now infamous white house fence jumper. this time, the response came quick, fast, and in a hurry. 7:16 p.m., you can see the suspect in this fox news video just after he jumps the white house fence. within seconds, a secret service dog is sent to attack. but the suspect fights back, kicking the dog. look again. there's a man identified as dominick adesanya, 23, of maryland, confronting the dog. seconds later, another dog dives in and soon he's swarmed by the secret service. >> he didn't get ten feet past the fence.

it wasn't like last time when the guy went off in a sprint. >> reporter: this morning his father says he struggles with mental health issues and claims he was arrested at the white house before. >> hope they give him a mental evaluation and help him. give him the medicine he needs. >> reporter: 34 days ago, on the same north lawn, a completely different response. this man jumps the fence, no dogs, no one tackles him and he makes his way into the white house through an unlocked door, past the secret service officer, moving deep into the white house. a failure so complete it cost the secret service director her job. the agency vowed to do better. this morning, the suspect who was not armed is charged with assault and making threats. as for the dogs, hurricane and jordan, they sustained minor injuries and have been cleared for duty. a disturbing stat, there have been seven fence-jumpers this year at the white house. george?

>> my goodness. seven already this year. and now the exploding air bags. the company that makes them, a criminal investigation. as the number of cars with defective bags keeps on rising. david kerley has the story. good morning. >> reporter: now this probe in what has become a very confusing recall. federal safety officials correcting the numbers twice, and a website that doesn't work. this morning the air bag recall is more urgent. with toyota telling nearly a quarter million of its customers that if it runs out of replacement bags, it will temporarily disable your passenger air bag until a new one is installed. if that happens, a warning to keep riders out of the passenger seat. and now another 3 million cars, moving the total up to nearly 8 million vehicles, that urgently need defective air bags replaced. those numbers keep changing, and the federal safety agency is telling consumers to use its website to see if their car is affected but that site isn't working. >> this is the same agency that didn't get the gm ignition

switch right. now they don't even know what the story is on the takada air bags enough to tell the public and protect the public. it's terrible. >> reporter: these air bags made by the japanese company, takata, were recalled last year, but the ten carmakers and government are now saying, the problem is worse than expected. it's the inflater, the cannister, exploding so fast it can send metal shards flying. safety advocates say four deaths are linked to bad air bags. angela barbosa said her recall notice came after the medal shards injured her in a accident near dallas. >> this is a time bomb in their faces. it's literally a grenade. >> reporter: we are at 8 million cars that urgently need new air bags. but safety advocates say that's part of the problem. a total of 20 million cars in this country should be recalled. lara? >> wow. so many could be affected. thank you. and now we want to turn to the nor'easter slamming new england right now.

the storm is picking up steam, and bringing with it, heavy rain, powerful winds and even some flooding. ginger zee is at the wall tracking it all. zinger, what's the latest? >> 14,000 people without power in massachusetts. look at the turbulent seas caught on camera there. and this is unfortunately what a lot of roadways look like. the trees on top of cars. some of the gives up to 54-mile-per-hour overnight. and it's not letting up any time soon. we have high wind advisories and warnings for parts of rhode island, connecticut and massachusetts. you can see the heavy rain moving through from worcester back to boston and southern new hampshire. here's what the gusts will do. this is the important part. this is where you get the trees and power lines down. put it at 8:00 a.m. still 55-mile-per-hour gust forecast. new york city, 29. and even through the day. not letting up that much. we'll still see gusts from 20 to even 50 miles per hour. and a whole lot of rain still coming for parts of new hampshire and massachusetts.

on november 5th. the league argued that the commissioner should not have to testify. and stopping the spread of ebola on monday. arriving from liberia, sierra leone and guinea will be monitored for 21 days and have to take their temperature twice each day. good news, amber vinson, her family says amber vinson is now ebola-free. a verdict this morning could finally close one of the darkest chapters of the iraq war. four former black water security guards have been convicted of shooting dozens of unarmed iraqis at a baghdad traffic circle in 2007, killing 14 of them. the contractors hired to protect u.s. diplomats claim self-defense. they could now face decades in prison but are vowing to appeal. a big scare at a virginia gas station. a mother gets out to pump gas, leaving the 2-year-old in the suv. then her daughter knocks the ford explorer into neutral.

>> good morning, strahan. this actor claiming on being ripped off, he wants $250 million. so what character in "the simpsons" is worth that? homer? marge? bart? krusty the clown? now. how about louie. who, you ask? yeah, a character who has actually shown up only a handful of times in the show's 25-year history. this is frankie carbone. the marble-mouthed mobster from "goodfellas." and this is louie. "the simpsons'" character accused of being a copy of carbone. >> you know how it is with us? >> reporter: at least that's according to frank, the actor who plays frankie. and if you think he's taking it lightly forget about it. he's now suing fox for $250 million claiming the simpson's literally drew the inspiration for louie from his carbone character. according to the lawsuit,

writers for "the simpsons" lived next to him when he was developing his character as frankie. and louie made his debut on the simpsons in 1991, just a year after "goodfellas." he's been in protecting it before. in july, he had beef with a california deli over its frankie carbone sandwich, which they used his picture to promote. they removed the photos and changed the name of the sandwich. as far as louie, he lives on. >> reporter: but the lawsuit makes it clear. but the lawsuit makes it clear, he believes "the simpsons'" wise guy hits too close to home. or should we say, homer. sivero and fox, they would not respond to our request for a response. also, keep in mind here, guys. $250 million, this character literally has shown up in 16 episodes out of the 550 plus

sparking a lot of conversation. what to do when you and your spouse disagree on how to discipline the children. >> it's a hot topic. causes a lot of disagreement. indeed, indeed. we begin with the high stakes testimony of the retrial of john goodman for dui manslaughter. goodman took the stand wednesday denying he was drunk and claiming it was brake failure that caused the crash. lindsey davis has the story. >> i meant to grab the gear shift. that's the last thing i remember. >> reporter: blaming his bentley. that's what multi millionaire john goodman while taking the stand in his defense wednesday. the owner of the international polo club, pleading not guilty, insisting that the brakes on his $200,000 car weren't working properly the night he slammed into 23-year-old scott wilson's hyundai, sending it into the canal where wilson drowned.

>> you believe that your bentley did not work, right? >> yes. >> reporter: goodman testified he was on his way to wendy's to buy a frosty, and the last thing he remembers is trying to apply the brakes. >> the first thing i remember is just seeing white -- white everywhere. and not -- >> stars? >> yes. and -- yes and, white and not knowing where i was. >> reporter: the prosecution claiming goodman was drunk at the time of the accident after working up nearly a $300 tab partying at the swanky players club. >> you ordered 18 drinks at the players club. >> yes. >> reporter: but goodman says he only had three of those drinks. the rest were for other people. he also claims he didn't get drunk until after the crash when he left the scene and stumbled on a friend's home, where he says he found alcohol. >> do you know what liquor you are drank? >> no. >> did you pour it into a glass or how did you drink the liquor? >> i drank it out of the bottle.

>> reporter: goodman's defense also calling a medical specialist saying he was disoriented not because of the amount he had to drink but because the crash likely cave him a concussion. >> that was like a concussion, a mild traumatic brain injury. >> we to want bring in dan abrams for more on this story. how do you think he did on the stand? is the jury con convinced? >> any time your defense is my bently famalfunctioned, that's tougher. that's tough. this is the second trial. he was convicted the first time. he testified the first time. he's got to convince the jury in a way he didn't the first time. he's added a couple things to the testimony. for example, saying he pumped the brake on the bentley. reached for the emergency brake. things he didn't mention in the first case. so that's changing here. i think they're hoping that the jury's going buy this story this time. but the heart of this case still comes down to the question of,

how did he get drunk? he says it was in this man cave after the incident occurs. prosecutors are saying no, no, you had 12 to 13 drinks before you got into your car. >> we're also seeing, he's admitted that he has a speech impediment. we have seen that on the stand. why is that such an important point? >> because the defense wants these jurors to believe that the first witness who saw him after the crash said he seemed like he was slurring his words, it wasn't slurring. but it was stammering, it was a speech impediment. and you're seeing that on the stand. one of the key things for the jurors, do they believe it? do they believe this is real or something that's manufactured to tailor his defense? >> boy, new revelations all the time. thanks. and now turn to the pittsburgh murder trial involving two prominent physicians. the husband accused of killing his wife by lacing her drink

with cyanide. and police say he researched ways to cover it up. paula faris has the story. >> reporter: it is a high-profile case rocking the medical community. a neuroscientist accused of killing his wife, allegedly poisoning her with cyanide. this morning, opening statements are about to begin in the trial of dr. robert verrante, the university of pittsburgh neuroscientist charged in the death of his wife, neurologist dr. autumn klein. seen here in a video produced bit discovery children. >> it's important to women with epilepsy. >> reporter: 65-year-old ferrante reportedly clav 41-year-old klein an energy drink laced with cyanide, saying it would help her get pregnant. that same day, how a regimen could help them conceive.

according to a report obtained by abc news, klein wrote, will it stimulate egg production too. ferrante allegedly responds with a smiley face. she collapsed and three days later died. he did not want an autopsy performed and instructed the klein's body be crematcremated. despite those instructions, an autopsy was indeed performed, revealing the cyanide poisoning. he used the university credit card to buy a bottle of cyanide just days before she collapsed. and just hours after an april 2013 interview with police following klein's death, ferrante allegedly searched on google, would ecmo or dialysis remove traceses of toxins, poisons. he suspected his wife was having an affair and arrested in july, 2013. and charged with one count of criminal homicide. to which he pled not guilty. >> paula faris, abc news, new york.

and we're back now at 7:41 with the urgent quest to make football safer. we all know the dangers. researchers have found that players on average experience almost 100 gs of force on an impact that lasts just 15 seconds. enough to get a concussion. and some players take thousands of hits a year. now, though, technology is trying to make the game safe. and jim avila got an exclusive look at some new helms. >> reporter: virginia tech university tracked 300,000 impacts on the football team. it's the epicenter for research into safer helmets. using a simple but critical test. lift the football helmet rimmed with sensors six feet into the air and drop it on to a rubber-coated and concrete steel block. virginia tech says it mimics what players can face on the field. then it assigns a 1 to 5 star
